Canonical lists 26.04 LTS as an April 2026 long-term-support release with standard security maintenance through May 2031. Choose Ubuntu 24.04 LTS instead when your existing production stack is certified only for 24.04 or when a low-risk migration matters more than the newer release’s longer runway.

This is a lifecycle and compatibility decision, not a claim that one Ubuntu release is inherently faster. No authoritative, apples-to-apples WordPress benchmark establishes a performance advantage for Ubuntu 26.04 over 24.04.

The short answer: 26.04 for new servers, 24.04 for proven compatibility
For a fresh WordPress VPS or dedicated server, start by evaluating Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. It gives a new deployment the longest standard-support window and avoids starting a long-lived site on an older base. Canonical’s 2026 release material designates it as an LTS release; the standard security-maintenance horizon is listed through May 2031. Ubuntu Pro can extend coverage to ten years through Expanded Security Maintenance.
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS remains the safer choice for an established workflow when any critical component has only been validated on 24.04. That includes a hosting image, control panel, PHP build, database package, deployment script, backup agent, monitoring integration or WordPress plugin with a documented operating-system requirement. Standard maintenance for 24.04 ends on 31 May 2029, with optional Ubuntu Pro or Legacy coverage available for organizations that need to stay longer.

Do not select between the releases based on an assumed speed difference. Page-cache settings, PHP version, database configuration, storage latency, object caching, traffic patterns and plugin behavior normally have a larger effect than the Ubuntu point release. Benchmark your own workload if performance is the deciding factor.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS vs 24.04 LTS
| Decision factor | Ubuntu 26.04 LTS | Ubuntu 24.04 LTS |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | New WordPress deployments whose complete stack supports the 2026 LTS | Existing production systems or conservative migrations validated on 24.04 |
| Standard security runway | Through May 2031 according to Canonical’s 2026 lifecycle information | Through 31 May 2029 |
| Extended coverage | Ubuntu Pro can extend maintenance to ten years with Expanded Security Maintenance | Ubuntu Pro or Legacy coverage can extend maintenance beyond the standard period |
| Compatibility confidence | Requires confirmation from every hosting and software vendor you depend on | Often higher for tools that were released and certified against the 24.04 base |
| Migration effort | None for a new installation; an in-place move from 24.04 requires testing and a rollback plan | Lowest when the current server already runs 24.04 |
| Documented WordPress speed advantage | Not established by an authoritative comparative benchmark | Not established by an authoritative comparative benchmark |
Canonical’s release notes say, “Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is designated as a long-term support release” and state that it “will be supported until April 2031.” Canonical’s lifecycle information gives a standard-maintenance endpoint in May 2031. The month difference reflects how release and maintenance dates are presented; check the current Canonical lifecycle entry when scheduling a date-sensitive upgrade.

Why support lifetime matters for a WordPress server
An operating system is the foundation for security updates to the kernel, system libraries, OpenSSL, web-server packages and other components around WordPress. Running beyond standard maintenance does not immediately stop a site, but it increases the work required to obtain fixes and prove that every exposed service remains secure.
Planning around the support deadline
- Record the standard-maintenance date in your infrastructure calendar, not just in a personal note.
- Plan a replacement or release upgrade several months before the deadline so you have time for staging tests, DNS changes and rollback.
- Use Ubuntu Pro only as a deliberate lifecycle choice. Confirm current eligibility, coverage terms and pricing before budgeting for it.
- Keep WordPress, PHP, the database and the web server within their own supported lifecycles; an in-support Ubuntu host cannot compensate for an end-of-life application component.
Compatibility is the deciding test
Ubuntu 26.04 is the recommendation only after the complete WordPress stack passes a compatibility check. A WordPress site is not just the operating system: it is a web server, PHP runtime, database engine, extensions, scheduled jobs, TLS configuration, backup path, monitoring and a collection of plugins and themes.
Check the hosting image and control panel
Ask the provider whether Ubuntu 26.04 is an available image rather than assuming that an image labeled “Ubuntu” is current. If you use a control panel, verify that its installer and update channels explicitly support 26.04. A panel may boot on a newer release while still lacking tested package repositories, kernel modules or automated upgrade paths.

Check PHP and extensions
WordPress.org requires a server that supports PHP and MySQL, and it recommends Apache or Nginx as the most robust and featureful server choices. Confirm that your intended PHP branch is available for 26.04 and that all required extensions are packaged for that branch. Typical extension requirements depend on the theme and plugins and can include image processing, internationalization, multibyte strings, XML, cURL, ZIP and a database driver.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not treat “PHP is installed” as sufficient. Export the extension list from the current server, compare it with the target image, and test a staging copy with production-like configuration. Keep PHP updated within a supported branch; WordPress.org warns that end-of-life PHP or database software may expose a site to security vulnerabilities.
Check the database engine
WordPress.org describes MySQL support as a requirement, while many current deployments use a compatible MySQL-derived engine. Verify the exact engine and major version supported by your host, control panel and plugins. Test collation, character-set behavior, scheduled events, replication or clustering features, and restore procedures rather than checking only whether WordPress completes its installer.
Check plugins, themes and operational agents
Search the vendor documentation for operating-system or distribution restrictions on every security, cache, backup, object-storage, monitoring and deployment component. Pay special attention to proprietary agents that install kernel modules, system services or command-line binaries. A plugin that works inside WordPress may still depend on a server-side binary that has not been rebuilt for 26.04.
Is Ubuntu 26.04 stable enough for WordPress?
Yes, when the release is used as an LTS base and the surrounding stack is supported. “Stable enough” does not mean that every third-party tool is ready on release day. It means the operating system receives long-term maintenance and your specific software combination has passed installation, upgrade, backup and recovery tests.

Signals that 26.04 is ready for your site
- Your provider offers a maintained 26.04 image with a documented security-update process.
- Your control panel or automation platform lists 26.04 as a supported distribution.
- Your selected PHP branch, database engine, Apache or Nginx build and required extensions install without unsupported repositories.
- Staging tests pass for logins, publishing, media uploads, cron jobs, REST API calls, scheduled tasks, email delivery and payment or membership workflows.
- You can restore both the database and uploaded files to a clean 26.04 instance.
When “stable” still means waiting
Stay on 24.04 temporarily if a mission-critical component has an explicit 24.04-only certification, if your provider has no supported 26.04 image, or if your migration window is too short to test rollback. Waiting for vendor certification is a risk-control decision, not evidence that 26.04 is unsuitable.
Server requirements: what the published numbers do—and do not—mean
Canonical publishes comfortable-use figures for Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop of a 2 GHz dual-core processor, 6 GB of RAM and 25 GB of storage. Those figures describe the desktop experience, not a universal WordPress Server minimum. Canonical does not provide one hardware number that fits every WordPress workload.
Size the server from workload
- Small brochure site: prioritize reliable storage, automatic backups and enough memory for the operating system, PHP workers and the database.
- Busy publishing site: account for concurrent PHP workers, image processing, search indexing, cron activity and cache warm-up.
- Commerce or membership site: allow headroom for uncached requests, checkout sessions, background jobs and database growth.
- Multiple sites: calculate memory and CPU for the combined PHP pools, databases, scheduled tasks and monitoring overhead rather than multiplying a single-site guess.
Measure CPU saturation, memory pressure, disk latency, PHP queue time and database slow queries under representative traffic. Changing Ubuntu releases without measuring those bottlenecks will not produce a defensible performance conclusion.
Recommended stack for either LTS release
Use the same application architecture on both releases so that the operating-system decision remains isolated. WordPress.org recommends Apache or Nginx and requires PHP plus MySQL-compatible database support.
Apache
Apache is a practical choice when you rely on per-directory configuration, common hosting-panel workflows or rewrite rules managed with .htaccess. Confirm that the panel or automation system provides a supported Apache package on the selected Ubuntu release.

Nginx
Nginx is a strong choice for a reverse-proxy or high-concurrency design. Plan PHP-FPM pools, request limits, static-file caching and the correct WordPress front-controller rule. Test REST API routes, XML sitemaps, feeds and multilingual paths because an incorrect rewrite can look like a plugin failure.
PHP and database updates
Install supported PHP and database versions from maintained repositories supplied by your provider or distribution strategy. Avoid pinning an end-of-life version merely because an old plugin requests it; replace or update the plugin, or isolate the legacy site while you plan remediation.
How to choose: a practical decision tree
- Is this a new server? If yes, continue with 26.04 as the default. If no, document the current 24.04 stack before considering a move.
- Does every critical dependency list 26.04 support? Check the host, panel, PHP, database, web server, backup, monitoring, deployment tooling, themes and plugins. If any answer is unknown, pause and obtain written confirmation or test in staging.
- Can you restore and roll back? Do not migrate production until a database restore, file restore, DNS change and reversal to the old server have been rehearsed.
- Is a conservative schedule more important than support runway? If the site is stable on 24.04 and the migration carries material business risk, remain on 24.04 and schedule an upgrade before 31 May 2029.
- Will the site outlive the standard support window? Decide early whether you will upgrade to a later Ubuntu release or purchase eligible Ubuntu Pro or Legacy coverage.
Deploying a new WordPress server on Ubuntu 26.04
- Confirm the image: select a provider-maintained Ubuntu 26.04 LTS image and record its image date, kernel channel and update policy.
- Harden access: create a non-root administrator, use SSH keys, disable password authentication where appropriate, restrict management ports and enable a host firewall that permits only required services.
- Patch before installing applications: apply all available Ubuntu security updates, reboot if the kernel requires it, and verify that unattended-security-update behavior matches your change policy.
- Install the web stack: deploy Apache or Nginx, a supported PHP branch with the extensions your site needs, and a supported MySQL-compatible database. Keep package sources documented.
- Configure isolation: run each site with an appropriate PHP-FPM pool or equivalent account separation, least-privilege database credentials and file permissions that prevent the web process from writing to code directories.
- Deploy WordPress: copy core files, import the database, set the site URL and salts, configure the web-server rewrite rules, and verify HTTPS before opening the site publicly.
- Recreate operations: configure system cron or the chosen scheduler, outbound mail, object storage, backups, log rotation, monitoring and alerting.
- Test before DNS: use a temporary hostname or hosts-file override to exercise publishing, media, search, forms, REST API endpoints, scheduled jobs, user roles and administrative updates.
- Cut over: lower DNS TTL in advance, take a final database and file backup, put the old site in maintenance or read-only mode if necessary, synchronize changes, switch DNS and monitor errors and latency.
Moving an existing WordPress site from 24.04 to 26.04
A fresh parallel server is usually safer than an in-place operating-system upgrade for a production WordPress site. It gives you a known rollback target and lets you compare the complete stack before changing DNS.
Pre-migration inventory
- Ubuntu release, kernel, enabled repositories and package holds
- PHP version, extensions, FPM pool settings and upload limits
- Database engine, version, users, character set, collation and size
- Web-server virtual hosts, rewrite rules, TLS certificates and redirects
- WordPress core, active plugins, themes, must-use plugins and custom code
- Cron entries, queue workers, mail relay, backup destinations and monitoring checks
- DNS records, CDN or reverse-proxy settings and firewall rules
Migration sequence
- Build a patched 26.04 staging server with the same domain structure and supported application versions.
- Restore a recent production backup and run database checks before changing any URLs.
- Exercise every business-critical workflow with debug logging enabled but hidden from visitors.
- Resolve PHP notices, missing extensions, permission errors, cron failures and rewrite problems while the old server remains live.
- Repeat the restore from a newly generated backup so the recovery process is proven, not merely demonstrated once.
- Schedule the cutover during a low-write period, freeze content briefly if needed, synchronize the final database and uploads, then switch DNS.
- Keep the 24.04 server intact until logs, orders, forms, email and scheduled jobs have been verified on 26.04 and your rollback window has expired.
Common failure modes and fixes
The control panel will not install
Use the panel’s supported distribution list rather than forcing an installer intended for 24.04. If 26.04 is not listed, deploy 24.04 or run the panel on its supported image and revisit the migration after certification.
A plugin reports a missing PHP extension
Compare the required extension with the PHP branch actually serving the site. Installing an extension for a different PHP version does not fix the active FPM pool. Restart the relevant service and verify with a protected diagnostic page or command-line PHP output, then remove temporary diagnostics.
Best Value
Permalinks return 404 errors
Check the Apache rewrite module and directory overrides, or the Nginx front-controller rule. Confirm that the server block points to the correct document root and that the WordPress index file is reachable. Re-save permalinks only after the server rule is correct.
Scheduled posts or backups do not run
Check whether the old host used system cron, WordPress traffic-based scheduling or a queue worker. Recreate the exact schedule on 26.04, verify the service account’s permissions and inspect logs for path, environment and timezone differences.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe site is slower after migration
Do not attribute the change to Ubuntu alone. Compare PHP-FPM worker counts, opcode caching, database indexes, storage latency, DNS or proxy behavior, compression and cache hit rates under the same workload. Capture before-and-after measurements and revert if the migration introduces an unresolved regression.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Apply Ubuntu security updates and reboot when required by kernel or library changes.
- Run a supported PHP and database version; remove end-of-life components.
- Update WordPress core, plugins and themes from trusted sources and remove abandoned code.
- Use HTTPS, least-privilege accounts, strong administrator authentication and restricted SSH access.
- Store encrypted, off-server backups and test complete restores on a schedule.
- Monitor authentication failures, web-server errors, PHP fatal errors, disk usage, database health and certificate expiry.
- Document the release-upgrade path before the standard-maintenance deadline.
What WordPress support means in 2026
WordPress does not follow Ubuntu’s fixed LTS model. WordPress.org officially supports the latest major WordPress release, so your operating-system choice does not create a long WordPress support guarantee. Keep WordPress core and its dependencies current and treat compatibility testing as an ongoing process rather than a one-time installation task.
Final recommendation
Choose Ubuntu 26.04 LTS for a new WordPress server in 2026 after verifying the entire hosting and plugin stack. Its longer standard-security runway makes it the sensible starting point for a deployment you expect to operate for years. Choose Ubuntu 24.04 LTS when your production tooling is certified only on 24.04 or when migration risk outweighs the extra runway; document an upgrade plan before its 31 May 2029 standard-maintenance end date. In both cases, keep PHP, the database, WordPress and the web server supported, and base any performance decision on measurements from your own workload.
