Yes—an Ubuntu player can often join friends on Windows, but “the game launches” is only the first test. A native Linux build, a Windows game running through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer, working online services, anti-cheat support, and the exact store or platform used by every player all have to line up. Steam’s same-store PC releases are usually the simplest starting point; console and Microsoft Store versions can follow different multiplayer networks.
This guide gives you a practical shortlist, explains the native-Linux and Proton routes, and shows how to check a game before anyone buys it. Compatibility changes with patches, Proton versions, anti-cheat updates and storefront policies, so treat each title below as a candidate to verify on its current Steam page and publisher documentation.

What has to work for Ubuntu and Windows players to meet?
There are three separate questions:
- Can Ubuntu launch the game? Steam may offer a native Linux build, or it may run the Windows build through Proton.
- Does multiplayer work on Ubuntu? A game can start while voice chat, matchmaking, dedicated servers or anti-cheat fail.
- Can this particular Windows player join? Cross-play may be limited by store, edition, console network or account service.
Do not collapse those checks into one compatibility label. Steam Support’s Linux list covers games downloadable by the Steam for Linux client, while Steam Play can potentially make additional Windows-only games work on Linux. Those are different categories, and the store’s Linux list is not a complete list of every Proton-compatible game.

A native build is compiled for Linux and runs without Proton. It is normally the least complicated route: there is no Windows translation layer to configure, and the game’s Linux executable is the version being distributed for Ubuntu. Native does not automatically mean cross-platform multiplayer, however. The developer can still separate PC and console networks, require a particular store, or change support in a patch.

Windows games through Proton
Ubuntu documentation defines Proton as “software developed by Valve that allows Windows games to run on Linux, and is used by the Steam Play client.” You enable Steam Play in Steam and choose a Proton tool when needed. Proton’s behavior can vary by game, update and hardware, so a successful launch is not proof that online play or anti-cheat will work.
Same-store PC play is a filter, not a promise
If both people own the Steam release, begin by checking that version. A Windows copy from the Microsoft Store, an Xbox console edition or another PC storefront may use a separate network even when the title has the same name. The game’s current store page and publisher support matrix are the authority for that exact combination.
Ubuntu-friendly candidates to investigate first
The following titles appear in the documented comparison as native Linux entries unless a qualification is shown. The list is a starting point, not a guarantee for every Ubuntu installation or every friend’s platform. “Windows joining rule” means the question you must confirm before buying.

How to choose a game for your group
For a same-room party
Start with a title that explicitly supports local or shared-screen play. A Linux desktop can host the game while other players use controllers, keyboards or Steam’s remote feature, depending on the title. A controller is an optional accessory, not a requirement for ordinary online multiplayer. Before buying, check the game’s local-player limit and input support; a four-player label may refer to online players rather than four people on one screen.
For two people who want a structured campaign
Portal 2 is the clearest two-player-oriented candidate in this shortlist, while Left 4 Dead 2 and similar team titles are better suited to groups that want repeatable missions. Confirm that the cooperative mode—not just the single-player campaign—is available on the Linux/Windows combination you plan to use.

For a persistent shared world
Valheim, Project Zomboid, Core Keeper and Don’t Starve Together are candidates for groups that expect to return to the same world. In this category, server version, mods, save ownership and update timing can matter more than whether the executable is native. Agree on an unmodded baseline for the first test session so a compatibility problem is easier to isolate.
For a large PC group
Stardew Valley’s documented PC range is 1–8 players, making it the only title in the supplied evidence with a specific group-size figure. Do not infer that the same range applies to consoles, and do not assume that a Windows copy from a different store can join the Linux PC version.
Check compatibility before anyone pays
- Write down every player’s platform and store. Record Ubuntu plus Steam, Windows plus Steam, Microsoft Store, Xbox console or another storefront. “Windows” alone is not precise enough.
- Find the Linux route. Look for a native Linux build in the current Steam listing. If none is offered, check whether Steam Play/Proton is the intended route.
- Read the multiplayer section. Confirm online co-op, the mode you want, account requirements and the supported player range.
- Check the cross-play matrix. Search the publisher’s current support page for the exact pair of stores and platforms. A same-store PC session is a useful first filter, not a universal guarantee.
- Check anti-cheat and network services. A game may launch under Proton while its anti-cheat, matchmaking or voice service refuses Linux clients.
- Match versions and editions. Everyone should install the same release, update level and, for a first test, the same mod configuration.
- Run a short trial before buying extras. Create a new session, invite one Windows friend and test joining, voice, saving and reconnecting. Do this before purchasing downloadable content or building a long-term world.
Enable Steam Play and Proton on Ubuntu
Native Linux games do not need Proton. For a Windows game without a native build, Ubuntu’s documented Steam Play path is:

- Open Steam and go to Steam > Settings > Compatibility.
- Enable Steam Play for supported titles if you want Valve’s recommended compatibility choices.
- If you are testing a title outside that supported set, enable Steam Play for all other titles. Ubuntu notes that unsupported titles vary in functionality, so this setting is permission to test—not a compatibility guarantee.
- For a specific game, open its library entry, choose Properties > Compatibility, enable the per-game override and select the Proton tool you want to test.
- Launch the game once, then test the multiplayer mode with a Windows friend. Keep the Proton selection recorded so you can return to it if a later change breaks the session.
If a native Linux build exists, prefer it as the first test. If the game only works through Proton, consult current game-specific compatibility reports and the publisher’s support information. Proton versions and game patches can change results without any change to your Ubuntu installation.

Steam Remote Play Together lets one person run a supported local co-op game and invite a friend remotely. Steam says the invited friend does not need to own or launch the game. This is not the same as independent online multiplayer: the host is running the session, and the feature appears only on titles that support it.
Open the individual Steam store page and look for the Remote Play Together feature before relying on it. Then check how many local players the game accepts and whether each participant needs a controller. Remote Play can be a practical solution when a title has local co-op but no conventional cross-platform online mode; it cannot override a game’s own player limit or anti-cheat policy.

Why a Windows friend may still be unable to join
Different storefront networks
The Deep Rock Galactic policy is a concrete warning: Steam users cannot cross-play with the Xbox/Microsoft Store version. The game name is identical, but the network groups are not. Apply the same caution to every title instead of assuming that “PC” means one shared pool.
Console restrictions
Stardew Valley’s documented multiplayer covers PC Linux, Mac and Windows, while its broader cross-platform support is restricted. Treat the PC exception as specific evidence for those PC versions, not as permission to add consoles to the same farm.
Anti-cheat or service incompatibility
Anti-cheat may block a Proton client even when the menu loads. Matchmaking, voice chat and account authentication can fail separately. When that happens, check the publisher’s Linux or Proton statement and the current service status before changing random settings.

A Windows friend on a different patch, an alternate edition or a modded server may be invisible to the Ubuntu player. Update all clients, remove mods for the first test and confirm that the host is using the same session type described by the store page.
Troubleshoot in the order that saves the most time
The game will not launch
- Confirm whether you are using the native Linux build or Proton; do not apply Proton overrides to a native title unnecessarily.
- If it is a Proton title, try the game’s current recommended Proton option, then test another available Proton tool through Properties > Compatibility.
- Check current game-specific compatibility reports and publisher notes. A previously working title may change after a game or anti-cheat update.
The game launches, but multiplayer fails
- Test an offline or single-player mode to separate general launch problems from network problems.
- Confirm that the Linux player is not blocked by anti-cheat and that both clients are fully updated.
- Verify the friend’s store and edition. For example, the documented Deep Rock Galactic Steam/Microsoft Store split cannot be fixed by changing Proton.
The friend cannot see the invitation
- Check that both players are using the same game network and account service.
- Confirm that the chosen mode supports the number of players you are inviting.
- If using Remote Play Together, verify that the title advertises the feature and that the host is running the local co-op session.
A patch broke yesterday’s setup
Record the game version and Proton tool that worked, then check current compatibility reports and the publisher’s update notes. Avoid presenting an old workaround as permanent: Proton, anti-cheat and network services are moving parts.
A quick decision framework
- Both players use Steam on PC: begin with a native Linux entry from the shortlist, then verify online multiplayer and the current Windows/Linux rule.
- One player uses the Microsoft Store or Xbox: treat cross-play as unconfirmed until the publisher explicitly lists that store or console combination.
- You need local co-op at a distance: look for Remote Play Together and check the local-player and controller requirements.
- You need a long-running modded server: choose only after testing matching versions, server software and mods on Ubuntu and Windows.
- You need competitive online play: investigate anti-cheat support before purchase; launch compatibility is not sufficient evidence.
What to verify on the day you buy
- The current Steam store page still lists Linux support or the intended Proton path.
- The multiplayer mode you want is available on PC and supports your group size.
- Every Windows player is on the compatible store and edition.
- Cross-play wording names the exact platforms, rather than saying only “PC.”
- Anti-cheat, voice, matchmaking and dedicated-server requirements include Linux or Proton where applicable.
- Remote Play Together is shown if you plan to use host-based local co-op.
- Your Ubuntu system and every friend’s client can update to the same game version.
Ubuntu and Windows players can share many PC sessions, especially when everyone uses the same Steam release and the game has a native Linux build. Proton expands the pool, but it also adds a compatibility layer that must be tested. The safest recommendation is therefore specific: name the game, name the store, identify native Linux or Proton, and verify multiplayer and cross-play separately before the group commits.
