When a trusted site fails, repair the individual request or site instead of turning uBlock Origin off everywhere.
uBlock Origin works at several layers. Filter lists block network requests, cosmetic filters hide elements already rendered on a page, dynamic rules can change what is allowed for a site, and browser privacy controls govern cookies and storage. Treating those layers separately gives you more privacy with a much smaller chance of breaking logins, payments, video players, or other interactive features.

A conservative privacy baseline
Start with the extension’s defaults rather than trying to maximize a blocked-request counter. uBlock Origin’s own documentation warns that “the likelihood of page breakage increases with more filter lists added.” A large collection of overlapping lists can create duplicate rules, conflicting exceptions, and false positives without delivering a proportional privacy improvement.
| Setting or action | Recommended baseline | Privacy effect | Breakage risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in, maintained filter lists | Keep enabled | Blocks known advertising, tracking, malware, and nuisance requests covered by those lists | Generally lower than adding many unrelated lists |
| Automatic list updates | Keep enabled | Keeps rules current as domains and techniques change | Usually low; a newly corrected rule can occasionally affect a site |
| Additional custom lists | Add only for a concrete need | May cover a regional language, a specific nuisance, or a known threat | Rises as lists accumulate and overlap |
| Cosmetic filtering | Leave enabled for a clean page | Hides elements that network blocking cannot remove; it is not itself a privacy control | Usually visual rather than functional, although poorly written rules can hide useful controls |
| Advanced user mode | Leave off unless you understand dynamic filtering | Exposes finer request-level controls | High if rules are created without understanding their scope |
| Browser third-party-cookie control | Consider separately, with testing | Restricts a browser storage and cookie mechanism outside the uBlock Origin dashboard | Can break sign-in, embedded content, carts, and other site functions |
Labels and locations can move between Firefox-based and Chromium-based browsers and between extension releases. If a label in this article is not in your dashboard, use the current dashboard’s search or help text rather than assuming the feature was removed.

Keep filter lists useful and maintainable
Retain the maintained defaults
Open the uBlock Origin dashboard and review Filter lists. The lists selected by default are maintained for common blocking needs. They are the right starting point because they are curated to work together and receive ongoing rule changes.
Do not add several broad lists merely because each one reports more blocked requests. A blocked count measures matches, not a complete privacy score. Overlapping lists can increase false positives, make diagnosis harder, and require more memory or processing.
Add a list only for a defined problem
A custom list can make sense when you have a clear requirement—for example, a regional annoyance list for pages in a language that the defaults do not cover, or a narrowly focused list for a recurring nuisance. Add one list, use the affected sites for a while, and keep notes on any new failures. If a list causes trouble, contact its maintainers or remove that list before weakening uBlock Origin globally.
Leave automatic updates enabled
On the Filter lists page, keep the automatic-update option checked. The official documentation describes that option as enabled by default and recommended. uBlock Origin follows each list’s metadata and its own update cycle, so update timing is not identical for every list. A list can briefly display as out of date while waiting for its scheduled refresh; that status alone does not prove that blocking has stopped.

After changing lists, use the dashboard’s update control when you need an immediate refresh, then reload an affected tab. If a problem begins immediately after a list update, record which list changed, reproduce the failure in a private test window, and report the false positive to the list maintainer. Avoid disabling all lists as a first response.
Understand what cosmetic filtering does
Cosmetic filtering changes the page’s appearance by hiding elements that cannot be blocked at the network layer. It can remove empty ad slots, consent overlays, sponsored labels, and other unwanted page components. uBlock Origin’s documentation states that “cosmetic filtering has no value privacy-wise”; its purpose is to hide elements on a web page that cannot otherwise be blocked.
That distinction matters when troubleshooting. Turning cosmetic filtering off may reduce resource use in some situations, but it does not turn network blocking into a stronger privacy system. It can also expose ads or overlays that make a page harder to use. Keep it enabled when your goal includes a cleaner page, and test it only as a targeted diagnostic if a visible control appears to be missing.

When cosmetic rules hide something useful
- Reload the page with cosmetic filtering temporarily disabled from the uBlock Origin popup or dashboard control available in your release.
- If the missing control returns, re-enable cosmetic filtering and use the element picker or a narrow per-site cosmetic exception instead of disabling the feature everywhere.
- Test the page in a new tab and on a second visit. If the issue persists, report the rule and page to the list maintainer so the selector can be corrected.
Advanced mode and dynamic filtering
The dashboard’s I am an advanced user option exposes dynamic filtering and other advanced settings. uBlock Origin advises: “You should avoid playing with advanced features and settings unless you fully understand what you are doing.” You do not need advanced mode for the conservative baseline above.
Dynamic filtering lets you make decisions based on the source site, destination, request type, and whether a request is first-party or third-party. It is more precise than disabling the extension, but a rule can still have a wider scope than you intended. A rule applied to a broad domain can affect every page under that domain, while a rule for a specific request type may leave the rest of the site protected.

Use dynamic allow rules for narrow false positives
A dynamic allow rule can override a static-filter false positive for the request that is preventing a feature from working. In the popup’s dynamic-filtering matrix, create the smallest exception that matches the failing request, such as one destination or request type, and avoid changing a whole domain when a single resource is enough.
After creating the rule, reload the page and verify the exact feature—rather than merely checking that the page opened. If the feature still fails, inspect the logger for another blocked request. If the site works, leave unrelated request types protected.

Back up before experimenting
Use the dashboard’s backup function before changing advanced rules, custom filters, or multiple lists. Store the exported backup somewhere you can retrieve it. If a rule set becomes confusing, restore the backup instead of trying to remember every manual change. This is especially important when moving between browser profiles or reinstalling the extension.
Repair a broken website without disabling protection
Use this escalation path. It starts with the smallest change and becomes broader only when necessary.

- Identify the exact failure. Note whether the problem is a blank page, missing images, a login loop, a video that will not start, a payment widget that never loads, or a control hidden from view. Different symptoms often come from different request types.
- Check the popup overview. Open uBlock Origin’s popup on the affected page and review the request counts and any per-site controls available in your version. Do not assume that the largest count identifies the cause; look for a request associated with the failed feature.
- Use the logger when you need evidence. The logger records requests and the filter or rule that acted on them. Filter the view by the affected tab, destination, or request type, then inspect blocked entries around the time the feature failed.
- Create a narrow allow exception. If a static filter is clearly responsible, add a dynamic allow rule for the specific request, destination, or type. Keep the exception scoped to the site that needs it.
- Reload and test the feature. A page reload applies the change. Confirm the login, player, checkout, or other function that originally failed, and check a different page on the same site to make sure the exception did not become broader than intended.
- Remove failed experiments. If the exception changes nothing, delete it and continue investigating rather than accumulating unused rules. Multiple guesses make future diagnosis harder.
- Escalate only when necessary. If the site cannot work with a narrow request-level exception, use a trusted-site directive temporarily, test the feature, and then decide whether the site is important enough to remain trusted.
Trusted sites are a broad bypass
A trusted-site directive disables uBlock Origin filtering for the matched page or site. It is therefore substantially broader than a dynamic allow rule: network filtering and cosmetic filtering are both bypassed for that scope. Use it only for a site you trust and only after a narrow repair has failed.
When you add a site to the trusted list, reload and verify the function. Keep the entry as narrow as the dashboard permits, and remove it if you no longer need it. A trusted-site setting is not a permanent diagnosis; it is an explicit decision to give up uBlock Origin protection on that scope.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThird-party cookies are a separate browser decision
Third-party-cookie blocking is not a uBlock Origin dashboard setting. uBlock Origin’s privacy notes explain that the extension cannot prevent cookies from being sent in cookie headers and point to the browser’s own third-party-cookie control as an additional measure.
Open your browser’s privacy or cookie settings to find that control; the label and location differ by browser and release. Enabling it can limit cross-site tracking, but it can also affect local storage and break embedded sign-in widgets, federated login, comments, media players, shopping carts, or other functions that rely on cross-site state. Treat it as an independent experiment: change it, test the sites you depend on, and be prepared to create browser-level exceptions or revert the change.
Best Value
Do not describe third-party-cookie blocking as universal protection. It addresses one browser storage mechanism, while uBlock Origin’s filters address network requests and page elements. The two controls can complement each other, but neither replaces the other.
A practical maintenance routine
Monthly review
- Confirm automatic filter-list updates remain enabled.
- Review custom lists and remove any added for a problem you no longer have.
- Check the personal rules and trusted-sites sections for old exceptions.
- Export a backup before major browser or extension changes.
When a browser or extension updates
Recheck the dashboard labels and the browser’s cookie controls. Supported Chromium- and Firefox-based environments can expose different controls, and browser changes can restrict extension capabilities. Test your essential sites—email, identity provider, banking, work tools, streaming, and checkout—before adding new rules to compensate for a change you have not yet identified.
Common mistakes and the safer alternative
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Safer alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Installing every popular filter list | More overlap increases false positives and maintenance work | Keep maintained defaults and add one list for a documented need |
| Turning off all filtering when one feature fails | It removes protection for every request on the page | Use the logger and allow only the request or type that is failing |
| Disabling cosmetic filtering as a privacy upgrade | Cosmetic filtering hides elements; it is not the privacy layer | Leave it enabled unless troubleshooting a visual issue |
| Enabling advanced mode and changing rules by trial and error | Rules can apply more broadly than expected | Back up first and change one narrowly scoped rule at a time |
| Assuming an old list status means blocking is broken | Update schedules depend on list metadata and uBlock Origin’s cycle | Check the update controls and investigate only a persistent failure |
| Blocking ubiquitous third-party domains globally | Useful embedded features may depend on them | Apply a per-site or per-request exception after identifying the dependency |
How to choose the right scope
Use the narrowest control that solves the problem:
- Global list change: appropriate only when the same unwanted behavior appears across many sites and the list is maintained for that purpose.
- Per-site cosmetic exception: appropriate when one site’s visible control is hidden.
- Per-request dynamic allow: appropriate when one blocked resource causes a specific feature to fail.
- Trusted-site directive: appropriate only when the whole site needs broad compatibility and you accept that uBlock Origin will not filter it.
- Browser cookie setting: appropriate when your goal concerns third-party cookies or local storage, with separate compatibility testing.
This layered approach preserves filtering everywhere else while making the smallest concession required by the site you are using.
