Which TV Resolution Should You Buy? A Clear Guide to 480p, 720p, 1080p, 4K and 8K

For most people buying a TV today, 4K UHD (3840 × 2160 pixels) is the practical default. The five common resolution labels—from legacy 480p through 8K—describe how many pixels a display has, but they do not tell you by themselves how sharp a picture will look. Screen size, seating distance and the resolution of the content all matter.

What are the five main TV resolutions?

A TV’s native resolution is the number of pixels across its display multiplied by the number of pixels down. The totals below are arithmetic products of each format’s dimensions.

Format Pixel dimensions Total pixels Where you’re likely to encounter it
480p (standard definition) 720 × 480 345,600 Legacy DVDs, standard-definition channels and older game systems. RTINGS
720p (HD) 1280 × 720 921,600 HD content and a very rare TV format in RTINGS’ 2026 market assessment. RTINGS
1080p (Full HD or FHD) 1920 × 1080 2,073,600 Common media resolution, though 1080p TVs are rare in RTINGS’ 2026 assessment. RTINGS
4K UHD (2160p) 3840 × 2160 8,294,400 The common current TV format. LG describes it as having four times as many pixels as Full HD. LG · RTINGS
8K UHD (4320p) 7680 × 4320 33,177,600 Four times the pixels of 4K and sixteen times those of 1080p, but uncommon as a TV format and with limited native content. LG · RTINGS

RTINGS’ market labels are qualitative assessments in its 2026 guide, not a region-by-region inventory or sales census. Availability can differ by market.

What does resolution tell you—and what doesn’t it?

Resolution tells you the pixel dimensions of the TV’s panel. More pixels can represent finer detail, but pixel count alone is not a complete measure of picture quality. It does not establish which of two TVs has better brightness, contrast, color or motion, and it cannot tell you how much native high-resolution content you watch.

More pixels do not make every source higher resolution

A TV scales an incoming picture to fit its panel. A 4K screen can display a lower-resolution channel, show or game, but scaling it does not turn the source into native 4K. Material produced at the panel’s resolution can preserve detail that a lower-resolution source does not contain. RTINGS explains TV resolution and scaling.

4K and 8K are pixel-count comparisons, not guarantees of visible improvement

4K has four times the pixels of 1080p; 8K has four times the pixels of 4K. Whether you can see more detail depends in part on screen size and viewing distance. A larger screen or closer seat makes fine detail easier to distinguish, but there is no single distance threshold that applies to every viewer and setup.

Is 4K worth it for most TV buyers?

For a typical living room, 4K is the sensible starting point: it is very common in the current market and offers four times the pixel count of Full HD. The practical question is whether the screen size, your seating distance and the content you watch make that extra detail useful—not just whether the box says “4K.”

1080p may still suit someone seeking a small, low-cost TV, but RTINGS characterizes 1080p sets as rare in its 2026 market overview. That is a general market assessment, not a guarantee about what is in stock locally.

Should you buy an 8K TV?

Consider 8K only if you have a very large screen, sit close enough to make its extra detail relevant, and have compatible content to watch. Native 8K content remains limited, and LG recommends 4K as the more practical choice for most homes. The pixel-count advantage over 4K is substantial on paper, but the difference can be difficult to see in typical viewing conditions.

How should screen size and viewing distance affect your choice?

Start with where the TV will go and how far away you will sit. A larger screen and a closer viewing position make small details more noticeable; from farther away, the difference between resolutions may be harder to discern. RTINGS’ 65-inch example illustrates how viewing distance changes the perceived difference between 1080p and 4K, but its chart is a guide rather than a universal cutoff. Sony also notes that recommended viewing distance depends on both screen size and resolution.

What to compare when choosing between two TVs

Do not use the resolution label as a stand-in for overall image quality. Compare the actual TVs against your room and viewing habits.
