Which TV Audio Settings to Change for Dolby Atmos and HDMI eARC

For a compatible TV, soundbar or AV receiver, and source, connect the HDMI cable to the ports marked ARC or eARC, set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto, choose Auto or Pass-Through for Digital Output Audio Format, and enable the TV’s Dolby Atmos compatibility option if it has one. Turn on HDMI-CEC when the devices do not establish a link. These settings only pass an Atmos signal that the source, TV, cable, and audio system actually support; they cannot create Atmos from ordinary audio.

Start with this connection and settings checklist

  1. Run HDMI from the TV socket labeled ARC or eARC to the matching ARC/eARC socket on the soundbar or receiver. Many televisions have only one audio-return port.
  2. Open the TV’s sound or expert sound menu and set HDMI eARC Mode to Auto when both endpoints support eARC.
  3. Set Digital Output Audio Format to Auto or Pass-Through, using the option your audio device documents as supported.
  4. Enable Dolby Atmos compatibility if the television exposes that switch and the connected audio device accepts Atmos.
  5. Enable HDMI-CEC if the TV and audio device do not detect each other or cannot be controlled together. Samsung names this feature Anynet+.
  6. Play a title or channel that explicitly supplies Dolby Atmos and check the soundbar or receiver’s input information.

Menu names differ by manufacturer, model and software version. The sequence above is a reliable starting point, not a universal guarantee for every codec. Confirm the exact behavior in the television and audio-device manuals.

What each TV audio setting actually does

HDMI eARC Mode

eARC is the enhanced audio-return link between a TV and an external audio system. On a compatible pair, Auto allows the television to establish that enhanced link and negotiate supported formats. If either endpoint has only ARC, selecting eARC cannot add eARC capability; the connection falls back to what both devices support.

Samsung’s eARC instructions explain the purpose and setup in its support guide: What is eARC and how to set on Samsung Smart TV?.

Digital Output Audio Format

This control determines how the TV sends audio to the HDMI-return device. Auto selects a format the television considers compatible. Pass-Through sends the encoded signal without the TV processing or converting it; some sets show this option only after an external device is connected. The available choices and their behavior are model-specific.

If Auto or Pass-Through produces silence, incompatible-channel errors or unstable audio, test the choices individually. PCM is a useful compatibility diagnostic because it asks the TV to send decoded PCM audio, but it may not preserve an Atmos bitstream. Do not assume PCM is an Atmos setting.

Samsung documents these labels and their intended use in How to set the TV Audio format.

Dolby Atmos compatibility

Some televisions include a Dolby Atmos compatibility switch. On supported Samsung models, it allows the TV to receive Dolby Digital Plus streams that contain Atmos from an external source. Other brands may omit the switch, rename it or handle the capability automatically. Enabling it does not convert stereo, standard Dolby Digital or another non-Atmos soundtrack into Atmos.

Samsung’s model-dependent procedure appears in How to use Dolby Atmos with your Samsung Soundbar. Samsung’s guide says to set HDMI e-ARC Mode to Auto, set Digital Output Audio Format to Auto or Pass-Through, and activate Dolby Atmos compatibility; treat that as guidance for supported Samsung combinations rather than a rule for every TV.

HDMI-CEC

HDMI-CEC carries device-control and connection information over HDMI. A TV may need it enabled before it will complete the ARC/eARC handshake or allow volume control from one remote. Samsung calls CEC Anynet+; another manufacturer may use a different name. CEC is not an audio codec and does not improve sound quality, but disabling it can make an otherwise correct ARC/eARC installation appear dead.

Audio delay

Audio delay changes timing between picture and sound. Use it only when voices are visibly ahead of or behind the image. It neither enables eARC nor adds Atmos metadata, so changing it will not repair a missing Atmos signal.

ARC versus eARC: what your system can carry

ARC and eARC are not interchangeable in capability. eARC offers a higher-capacity return path and, according to Samsung’s eARC documentation, supports high-bitrate formats such as Dolby TrueHD and Atmos when the television, source and audio device all support them. Atmos can also be carried as Dolby Digital Plus in supported ARC configurations, so the statement that every Atmos signal requires eARC is too broad.

Check ARC eARC What to verify
Port requirement HDMI port marked ARC on both devices HDMI port marked eARC on both devices Use the labeled ports; a regular HDMI input will not provide audio return.
Return-link capacity Lower than eARC; codec support is limited by the TV and audio device Enhanced capacity for supported high-bitrate formats Read both manuals rather than inferring support from the port label alone.
Atmos delivery Possible with Dolby Digital Plus Atmos when every component supports that path Can carry supported Dolby Digital Plus Atmos and higher-bitrate Atmos formats Check the source’s output mode and the receiver or soundbar’s accepted codecs.
TV output choices May expose Auto, Pass-Through, PCM or a smaller set of options May expose additional pass-through behavior, but menus remain model-specific Test the formats documented for your exact model.

LG’s manual shows why a universal recipe is unsafe: its digital-output table states that PCM input is output as PCM, while Auto or Pass Through can output Dolby Digital Plus and Atmos, with other results changing according to ARC/eARC state and model. See the LG product manual section on configuring digital sound output for an example of this model-specific behavior.

Set up Dolby Atmos through a TV step by step

1. Confirm the signal path before changing menus

List the source, television and audio endpoint. A streaming app built into the TV, a game console, a Blu-ray player and a set-top box can expose different output controls. Confirm that the program or disc actually has an Atmos track, that the source can output it, and that the soundbar or receiver advertises Atmos support. If any one of those conditions fails, TV settings cannot supply Atmos.

2. Connect the correct HDMI sockets

Plug one end of the cable into the TV’s ARC/eARC-labeled HDMI port and the other into the soundbar or receiver’s ARC/eARC port. Do not use an ordinary HDMI input on the audio device. If the TV has several HDMI sockets, only the labeled return port carries TV audio back to the external system.

3. Turn on eARC where both endpoints support it

In the TV, open the sound expert or advanced settings and choose HDMI eARC Mode > Auto. Leave eARC disabled or use ARC behavior when the connected audio device does not support eARC; forcing an enhanced mode cannot upgrade older hardware.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

4. Choose an encoded-audio output mode

Set Digital Output Audio Format to Auto first. If the receiver’s manual specifically calls for an untouched signal, select Pass-Through. If the link is silent or reports an unsupported format, switch temporarily to PCM to determine whether the problem is codec compatibility. Restore Auto or Pass-Through only after confirming which formats the endpoint accepts.

5. Enable Atmos compatibility and HDMI-CEC

Activate the TV’s Dolby Atmos compatibility option when present. Enable HDMI-CEC (Anynet+ on Samsung) if the devices fail to discover one another or volume control does not work. The exact menu path can differ even within one brand; use the model manual when a setting is missing.

6. Verify the result with known Atmos content

Start playback from a source that identifies an Atmos soundtrack. Check the receiver or soundbar display, information panel or input-status screen for the incoming format. Hearing sound from the speakers proves only that an audio link exists; it does not prove that Atmos metadata is arriving.

Troubleshoot in this order

  1. Inspect both port labels. Reseat the cable at the TV’s sole ARC/eARC socket, if applicable, and at the matching socket on the soundbar or receiver.
  2. Check capability at every stage. Verify TV, audio endpoint and source support the desired Atmos form and that the source is not configured for stereo or PCM-only output.
  3. Re-establish the handshake. Set eARC to Auto on compatible equipment and enable HDMI-CEC. Power off both devices, reconnect the cable, then power the TV and audio device back on.
  4. Test output formats one at a time. Try Auto, then Pass-Through, then PCM. Note whether each change produces sound and what format the audio device reports. PCM can identify a compatibility problem but should not be treated as proof of Atmos.
  5. Check the cable’s eARC suitability. Replace a damaged or incompatible cable with one specified for eARC. Samsung identifies HEAC or HEC compatibility in its eARC guidance. The available information does not establish any need for a premium-priced cable.
  6. Consult the exact manuals. If eARC still will not establish, look for the TV’s supported output table and the receiver or soundbar’s accepted input codecs. An LG table, for example, changes results according to ARC/eARC status, input type and output mode.
  7. Recheck the content. If only some titles show Atmos, the difference may be the soundtrack supplied by the service or device, not a TV fault. No setting can add Atmos to a source that does not carry it.

When should you replace equipment?

Buying a new soundbar, receiver or cable is not a general prerequisite. First compare the existing setup against these requirements:

Component Minimum question Why it matters
Television Does it have an ARC/eARC HDMI port and an output mode that passes the source format? The TV controls the return path for audio from built-in apps and devices routed through it.
Soundbar or receiver Does it accept Atmos and the specific codec, such as Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD? An eARC connection cannot make an audio endpoint decode an unsupported format.
Source Does the app, disc or external player provide Atmos, and is its output configured accordingly? Atmos metadata must exist before the TV can pass it onward.
HDMI cable Is the cable functional and suitable for the required ARC/eARC link? A faulty or unsuitable cable can prevent the handshake or limit the connection.
Control settings Is HDMI-CEC enabled on the TV and audio device? CEC may be required for discovery and control even though it does not carry the Atmos codec itself.

If the television has only ARC and your source needs a higher-bitrate Atmos path that ARC cannot carry, routing the source directly to an eARC-capable receiver may be an alternative, provided that receiver has the required HDMI inputs. That arrangement depends on the hardware’s documented signal routing; do not assume every receiver sends video and audio in the same way.

Common setup mistakes to avoid

  • Using the wrong HDMI port: plugging into a standard HDMI input instead of the labeled ARC/eARC port prevents audio return.
  • Assuming eARC is required for every Atmos track: Dolby Digital Plus Atmos may work over ARC in a supported combination, while high-bitrate formats generally need the enhanced path.
  • Leaving Pass-Through unavailable and treating that as an error: some TVs expose it only after an external ARC/eARC device is connected.
  • Choosing PCM as the permanent fix without checking the format: PCM can restore compatibility but may remove the encoded Atmos bitstream.
  • Changing audio delay to solve missing Atmos: delay corrects synchronization, not codec negotiation.
  • Blaming the TV for non-Atmos content: the program, service or source player must supply Atmos in the first place.
  • Assuming brand menus are universal: labels, supported codecs and ARC/eARC behavior vary by model and software version.

How to document a working configuration

Once Atmos works, record the TV model, the exact HDMI port used, the eARC setting, the digital-output mode, the HDMI-CEC name used by the brand, and the source device’s audio-output setting. Save a known Atmos title or test scene that reliably reports the format. This makes it easier to restore the setup after a factory reset, firmware update or cable change without guessing which variable caused a failure.
