Which Total War: Warhammer III Faction Should You Play After the Tomb Kings?

If you want a gentler next campaign without leaving the Tomb Kings, try Settra: Total War Academy identifies him as the easiest Tomb King start. If you are ready for a new faction, there is no evidence-backed universal best choice. Start with what you want to keep—an undead theme, the appeal of constructs, or distinctive campaign systems—and what you want to change. Then check that the faction and any required content are available in your game library.

Start with what you want from the next campaign

There is no official, current comparison establishing which faction is the best follow-up to the Tomb Kings. The available official guidance can support a cautious recommendation within the Tomb Kings, but it does not provide enough current faction-by-faction detail to rank Grand Cathay, Kislev, or the Chaos factions by difficulty, battle style, or similarity.

That means the useful question is not “Which faction is objectively best?” but “Which part of my Tomb Kings campaign do I want to carry forward, and which part do I want to leave behind?” You can make that choice without relying on unverified difficulty rankings or assuming that a similar theme means similar mechanics.

  • Want another Tomb Kings campaign? Settra is the safest place to start according to Total War Academy’s guidance. That is an official guide’s recommendation, not a newly tested ranking for the current live build.
  • Want a different theme? WARHAMMER III’s official portal introduces Grand Cathay, Kislev, and the Chaos factions. Treat those as options to investigate, not as a ranked list of best matches.
  • Want a specific playstyle match? First identify what you mean by that: battlefield tactics, campaign systems, faction theme, or starting challenge. The official pages reviewed do not establish a current mechanical comparison against the Tomb Kings.
  • Not sure you own the faction? Check the official ownership guide and your game client before choosing or buying content.

Choose the kind of transition you want

Stay with the Tomb Kings for a lower-friction change

If you enjoyed the Tomb Kings but want a different start within the same race, Settra is the most defensible recommendation in the available official guidance. Total War Academy calls him the easiest King to start with and cites growth and public-order effects. The page refers to older campaign context, so use that advice as a starting point rather than a guarantee about present-day balance.

  • From the icy peaks of Naggaroth to the arid reaches of the Southlands, each race struggles for dominion. As their conquests grow, the land turns crimson, and rivers run red with the blood of the slain!
  • Blood for The Blood God brings a number of gory, mature-rated effects to Total War: WARHAMMER II

The Academy describes Khatep and Arkhan as hard starts. Its explanation points to Khatep’s distant starting position and Arkhan’s difficult surrounding enemies. Those descriptions may help you understand why the guide characterizes them as challenging, but they should not be treated as a current difficulty ranking: the page’s campaign context is older, and it does not establish how every start performs in the current build.

It also describes Khalida’s campaign as focused on protecting her homeland from vampire corruption, and mentions an ammunition bonus for her archer legions in that source’s game context. The broad campaign framing may help you decide whether that premise appeals to you; do not assume the specific bonus is unchanged today.

Rank #2

Move to another race for a sharper thematic change

SEGA’s portal presents Grand Cathay, Kislev, and the Chaos factions as WARHAMMER III options. A different faction can offer the fresh theme you want, but the material available here does not establish that any one of them is the closest mechanical successor to the Tomb Kings. It would be misleading to declare one the best choice for construct armies, undead identity, campaign systems, or tactical style without current faction-specific evidence.

Instead, decide how much familiarity you want. If the Tomb Kings’ identity mattered most, look first at the official faction descriptions and choose a new theme that genuinely interests you. If you mostly enjoyed the way their campaign worked, do not assume another faction will reproduce those systems: verify its current campaign mechanics before committing. If you mainly want a change, choose on theme and curiosity rather than on an unsupported promise of similar battles or difficulty.

Use this decision guide before you start

  1. Name the part of the Tomb Kings campaign you liked most. Choose one primary reason: undead identity, constructs, campaign systems, or the tactical experience. If several mattered, rank them. This prevents a theme match from being mistaken for a mechanical match.
  2. Decide whether you want familiarity or a reset. For a lower-friction step that stays within the same race, consider Settra using the Academy’s qualified recommendation. For a new race and theme, consider the official WARHAMMER III options, but do not treat the portal as a guide to comparative difficulty or playstyle.
  3. Check what you can actually access. WARHAMMER III grants access to Immortal Empires and the launch races and Lords listed in SEGA’s guide. Other races and Lords may require an earlier game or DLC. The purchased content must be on the same game client as the game you are playing.
  4. Confirm the details for your platform and library. Use the current official ownership guide to check the specific race or Lord, the required game or DLC, and whether you already own it on the correct client. Do not buy content based only on a faction name in a list.
  5. Check current campaign information. Older guides may describe an earlier campaign context, while later patches can change faction systems. Use current official notes for details that matter to your choice, especially if you are selecting a faction because of a particular mechanic or difficulty claim.
  6. Pick based on what is verified, not on a supposed universal ranking. If no current official comparison answers your question, make the uncertainty part of the decision: choose the theme you are most interested in, or stay with the better-documented Settra option.

Faction choice and ownership are separate decisions

WARHAMMER III is described by SEGA as featuring seven races and hundreds of units, alongside real-time battles and a strategy sandbox. Those are broad publisher descriptions, not measurements of balance or campaign similarity. The game’s official guide also distinguishes content included with WARHAMMER III from races and Lords that may depend on earlier games or DLC.

Before purchasing anything, check the relevant entry in the official guide against your own library. Ownership requirements can depend on the content and game client; having a title or add-on elsewhere does not necessarily satisfy the same-client requirement stated in the guide. Store availability and edition details can change, so verify the current listing for your platform rather than relying on an old recommendation.

This matters especially if a faction appeals to you because of one particular Lord. Access to a race and access to a specific Lord are not necessarily the same question. Confirm the exact unlock requirement for the content you want, and check whether an earlier game or a separate DLC is involved. If the guide does not clearly answer your case, do not infer that the content is included: check the current official listing before paying.

Why older Tomb Kings advice needs a date check

Creative Assembly’s Patch 6.3 update changed several Tomb Kings campaign elements, including confederation, canopic jars, skills, the technology tree, Books of Nagash, and related effects. The studio described the patch as an update, not a full rework. Its Senior Live QA Technician, Liam Newman, said the changes came from ongoing player feedback and were “not full reworks.” That distinction matters: Patch 6.3 brought adjustments, but it should not be described as rebuilding the faction from the ground up.

Because the Academy’s start advice reflects older campaign context, read it alongside newer patch information rather than assuming every listed mechanic is current. Patch notes can also be superseded. If a specific feature is the reason you plan to replay a Lord, check the latest official update information for the version you are playing.

How to treat new content announcements

Warhammer Community’s announcement, published on 13 August 2026, said the Lords of the End Times DLC was due to come out on 24 September 2026. It announced four named Lords, new units, scenarios, gameplay updates, and revised victory conditions. That announcement is evidence of what was announced and the stated release date; it is not, by itself, confirmation of current availability or a guide to which faction Tomb Kings players should choose next.

If that content affects your decision, check its current status and ownership requirements through official sources for your platform. Do not treat the announcement as a comparative review or assume that new content changes the answer to the faction-choice question.

So, what should you play next after Tomb Kings?

Choose Settra if you want to remain with the Tomb Kings and prefer the safest recommendation supported by the official guide, while remembering that its difficulty advice reflects older campaign context. Choose a different race if what you want most is a new theme, but make the choice based on your own priorities and current faction information—not an unsupported claim that one is the best mechanical match.

Before you launch or buy anything, confirm that the race and Lord you want are available to your account on the same game client. That simple check prevents a promising next campaign from turning into an avoidable ownership surprise.
