To remove a demo entry, open your Library, right-click the demo, and choose Manage > Remove from account. Uninstalling a demo also removes it from the library, while Hide, collections, custom shelves, and dynamic collections let you keep an item without seeing it in the normal list.
Which Steam setting fixes which problem?
There is no single documented switch that makes every demo disappear from every Steam surface. The right setting depends on whether you are trying to stop an alert, delete a license entry, reclaim disk space, or make the Library easier to scan.

Valve introduced demo availability alerts because a demo can become available for a game on your wishlist or from a developer you follow. The announcement says Steam may send both an email and a mobile notification. The documented opt-out route specifically covers email preferences, so notification settings should be treated as two related but separate jobs: change the account email category for email, and review the Steam mobile app’s notification controls if mobile alerts continue.

Use the account notification page
- Sign in to the Steam account that receives the alerts.
- Open Account Details, then look for Notification Settings, Email Preferences, or similarly named notification controls.
- Find the category covering demo availability or announcements about demos.
- Turn that category off, then save if Steam presents a save button.
- Send a test message to yourself or wait for the next account email to confirm that the change is applied.
The account route may require you to sign in again. Steam changes its account navigation periodically, so if the wording is different, stay within Account Details and look for notification or email-preference settings rather than changing Library options. Turning off an email category does not remove demos from your Library and does not uninstall anything.

Email versus mobile notifications
Valve’s July 25, 2024 announcement describes a new alert behavior: when a demo becomes available for the first time for a wishlisted game or a game from a followed developer, Steam can send an email and a mobile notification. The same announcement says users can opt in or out of these emails by updating email preferences. It does not document one universal demo switch that simultaneously disables every delivery channel.
If email stops but your phone still alerts you, open the Steam mobile app’s notification settings and review its game, event, and announcement categories. The exact mobile labels depend on the app version and operating system. Do not assume that changing a desktop Library preference will affect push notifications; those controls serve different purposes.
Why an old message may still arrive
- An email can have been queued before you changed the preference.
- You may have changed preferences on a different Steam account or in a different browser session.
- The message may be a general event or wishlist notification rather than the demo-availability category.
- Mobile push notifications can remain enabled even after email is disabled.
Check the sender, subject, and account identity before changing additional settings. Broadly disabling every Steam email can hide useful security or purchase messages, so disable only the category that is producing unwanted demo alerts.

How to remove a demo completely from your Steam account
Remove the license entry from the Library
- Open the Steam desktop client and select Library.
- Locate the demo. Use the search box if it is mixed into a large collection.
- Right-click the demo’s entry.
- Choose Manage, then Remove from account.
- Confirm the removal if Steam asks for confirmation.
Valve documents this as the explicit way to remove a demo from an account. It is more permanent than hiding: the item is no longer retained as a visible demo license in your Library. If you later want to play that demo, you should expect to obtain it again from its store page when it is still available.
The command appears on the demo’s context menu, not on the main Steam settings page. If you do not see it, verify that you selected the demo entry rather than the full game, a shortcut, or a non-Steam item. Interface wording can change, but the relevant place remains the item’s Manage menu.
What removal does not do
Removing a demo from your account does not unsubscribe you from a developer, alter your wishlist, or change general Steam email settings. It also does not erase store discovery surfaces. Demos can still be listed in Steam’s public charts and category pages even when you have removed a particular demo from your personal Library.

How uninstalling differs from removing an account entry
Use uninstall when your immediate problem is disk space or leftover files. In the Library, open the demo’s context menu and choose the uninstall option Steam provides, then confirm. Valve states that when a demo is uninstalled, it is automatically removed from the game Library. That makes uninstall a practical cleanup route when the demo is installed locally and you no longer need it.

If the demo is not installed, there may be nothing to uninstall; in that case, use Manage > Remove from account for a license cleanup or Hide for reversible organization.
How to hide demos without deleting them
Hide a single item
Hiding is the least destructive option. In the Library, right-click the demo, open Manage, and choose the hide command (Steam may display it as Hide this game). The demo remains associated with your account, but it is omitted from the ordinary Library view. This is useful for a demo you may revisit during an event or for an item you want to retain without having it mixed into your main catalog.

Because hiding changes presentation rather than ownership or storage, it does not uninstall files and does not affect email or mobile alerts. To find a hidden item later, use Steam’s hidden-games view or the Library filters, then reverse the hide command from the same management menu.
Use a collection or custom shelf
Collections let you separate demos from full releases without deleting either. Create a collection such as Demos to try, then add the relevant entries. A custom shelf places that collection in a chosen position on the Library home page, so a small set of current demos can remain visible while the default all-games view stays focused on purchased releases.

Collections also allow different working groups, such as demos to play this weekend, completed demos, or demos requiring controller support.
Use dynamic collections carefully
Steam’s dynamic collections automatically organize games using store metadata, tags, and filters. They are useful for broad classifications such as genre, player mode, or operating-system support. However, the official documentation does not promise a universal filter that identifies every demo. A demo may lack a consistent tag, share tags with full games, or be categorized differently by its publisher.
For reliable demo separation, combine a dynamic collection with manual review or a normal collection. Treat the dynamic result as a convenience list, not proof that it contains every demo in your account.

Library cleanup and store discovery are separate systems. Valve says demos can appear in the same sections and lists as free games, including homepage charts such as New & Trending, New on Steam, and relevant tag or category pages. Removing or hiding a demo changes your personal Library view; it does not remove the demo from Steam’s public store catalog.

This explains a common apparent failure: a demo is gone from your Library but appears again in a store chart, search result, or recommendation. That is expected behavior, not evidence that the removal failed. If a store page offers the demo again, Steam is showing its public availability, not restoring the old Library entry automatically.
Choose the least disruptive cleanup method

Troubleshooting when a demo will not disappear
The removal command is missing
- Confirm that the item is a demo and not the full game, a soundtrack, or a shortcut.
- Open the context menu from the Library entry itself, then expand Manage.
- Restart the Steam client and check for client updates if the menu appears incomplete.
- Use the account’s Library search to locate a duplicate demo entry; publishers sometimes list separate entries for different builds or editions.
The demo is hidden but still visible
Check whether you are viewing a collection, a custom shelf, or a filtered list that intentionally includes hidden items. Hidden status affects the normal Library presentation, not every search, category, or store surface. Remove the item from any custom collection if you do not want it displayed there.
Alerts continue after opting out
- Reopen Account Details and verify that the preference change was saved on the correct account.
- Distinguish email from mobile push notifications; they can have separate controls.
- Allow time for messages already queued before the preference change to arrive.
- Check whether the message concerns a wishlist game, a followed developer, or a general Steam event category.
What Steam does not currently document as one switch
The reviewed official guidance does not describe a global setting named something like Hide all demos or Disable all demo notifications. Steam instead provides per-channel notification preferences, per-item account removal, uninstall behavior, and Library organization tools. A practical cleanup therefore uses the smallest combination that matches your goal: opt out of the email category, remove or uninstall unwanted entries, and hide or categorize anything you may want to keep.
