Re-enable an effect only for a specific source or listening goal: DSEE Ultimate is aimed at compressed or CD-quality material, while the phase and vinyl controls add coloration rather than resolution.
The neutral starting profile
Sony does not publish a universal “best” preset or a controlled measurement proving that one combination sounds best for every headphone. The settings below are therefore a practical reference profile for native high-resolution files, not a Sony-certified calibration.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Control | Starting state | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Source | On | Uses the least-processing path for the source. Turn it off only when you deliberately want another effect or the equalizer. |
| 10-band equalizer | Flat | Preserves the recording balance until you know your headphones or ear coupling need a small correction. |
| DSEE Ultimate | Off for native hi-res | Its stated job is real-time upscaling of compressed digital music, with emphasis on CD-quality material. |
| DC Phase Linearizer | Off | Adds a selectable analog-style character; it does not raise the file’s resolution. |
| Vinyl Processor | Off | Adds modeled low-frequency resonance, tone-arm resistance and surface noise, which is intentionally colored. |
| Dynamic Normalizer | Off | Keeps the original contrast between quiet and loud passages when listening to an album in sequence. |
| DSD Remastering Engine | Optional; compare by ear | The WM1ZM2 supports DSD processing, but Sony does not establish that remastering is objectively preferable for native DSD. |
Direct Source is the key first choice. With it enabled, the Walkman is intended to pass the source with minimal tonal processing. If you want equalization or one of the flavor effects, disable Direct Source and then make one change at a time so you can identify what you hear.
What each sound control actually does
Direct Source
Direct Source is the least-processed option for a high-resolution reference listen. It is useful when you want to judge the mastering, the headphone response and the recording rather than a Walkman effect. It is not a higher-resolution file mode: the file’s sample rate and bit depth stay what they are.

Use Direct Source as your baseline, then switch it off only for an intentional adjustment. If another control appears unavailable while Direct Source is enabled, that behavior is consistent with a processing-bypass design; choose whether the bypass or the effect matters more for the track you are playing.
10-band equalizer
Start with every band at 0 dB. A flat curve gives you a known reference and avoids mistaking a bass or treble boost for extra detail. After that, make small changes for a repeatable problem—such as a headphone that sounds too bright or too lean—and save the result as a preference rather than calling it a high-resolution requirement.
There is no Sony-published curve that is best for all headphones. Ear shape, seal, pad condition and the recording itself can change the result, so judge the equalizer with familiar tracks at matched loudness.

DSEE Ultimate
Sony describes DSEE Ultimate as using Edge AI to “upscale compressed digital music files in real time.” Sony specifically highlights CD-quality lossless audio at 16-bit/44.1 or 48 kHz. That makes it an enhancement option for compressed streams, files with lossy encoding, and CD-quality releases when you prefer its presentation.
A FLAC extension alone does not determine whether DSEE Ultimate is useful. A FLAC encoded from a 16-bit/44.1 kHz CD master is CD quality; a 24-bit/96 kHz FLAC is already high-resolution. For the latter, leave DSEE Ultimate off initially and compare only if you prefer the processed result. For native DSD, DSEE Ultimate is not a required step: DSEE is described as an upscaler for compressed digital music, not as a resolution upgrade for an already high-resolution master.
DC Phase Linearizer
Sony says this control “works to effectively replicate a wide variety of sonic signatures” and provides six phase-character settings. Those choices are voicing options: select one only when you like the analog-like character it produces. They do not add samples, bits or information to the file, so keep the control off when your goal is a neutral comparison of high-resolution masters.

Vinyl Processor
Vinyl Processor is designed to give digital tracks a vinyl-style mood. Sony identifies three modeled elements: low-frequency resonance, tone-arm resistance and surface noise. That combination is deliberately colored and can be enjoyable with older recordings or background listening, but it is normally the wrong choice for checking whether a hi-res transfer is clean and faithful. Turn it off for critical listening and enable it only as an aesthetic effect.

Dynamic Normalizer
Dynamic Normalizer reduces perceived loudness jumps between tracks. It can help on a mixed playlist whose songs were mastered at very different levels. The trade-off is that the original level contrast is no longer presented as consistently, so leave it off when preserving an album’s intended dynamics is more important than uniform volume.
DSD Remastering Engine
The WM1ZM2 supports DSD processing, but Sony does not publish a controlled comparison showing that DSD remastering is objectively superior for a native DSD file. Treat it as an optional processing path: listen with it off, enable it, match volume as closely as possible and keep the setting that you prefer. Do not describe the choice as increasing the file’s DSD rate.

Choose settings by the source, not by the file extension
| Source you are playing | Recommended first listen | When to experiment |
|---|---|---|
| Native DSD master | Direct Source on; EQ flat; DSEE Ultimate, DC Phase Linearizer, Vinyl Processor and Dynamic Normalizer off. | Compare the DSD Remastering Engine by ear if you want to explore its processing. |
| 24-bit/88.2, 96, 176.4 or 192 kHz PCM | Direct Source on and all coloration effects off. | Use a small EQ change for a headphone preference, not to “unlock” the sample rate. |
| 16-bit/44.1 or 48 kHz lossless (including CD-quality FLAC) | Start neutral, then try DSEE Ultimate if you like its upscaled presentation. | Keep the version that sounds better at matched loudness; there is no universal Sony recommendation. |
| Lossy or heavily compressed music | Try DSEE Ultimate; keep Direct Source off if the player requires that for processing. | Disable it when artifacts or an artificial edge become distracting. |
| Mixed-loudness playlist | Leave Dynamic Normalizer off for a first listen. | Enable it when track-to-track level changes are more annoying than the loss of original contrast. |
In other words, “high-resolution” is a property of the actual master and playback path, not simply the presence of FLAC, WAV or another lossless container. The same FLAC setting can be appropriate for DSEE Ultimate or not depending on whether the file is CD quality or a higher-resolution PCM master.
Connection choices that affect available processing
Wired analog output
Sony recommends a wired connection when the goal is the best sound quality. The WM1ZM2 provides a 4.4 mm balanced output; Sony says the balanced connection separates the left and right signals while minimizing transmission loss and sound deterioration. Use a compatible balanced cable and headphones, and do not connect a single-ended plug to a balanced-only cable or adapter unless its manufacturer explicitly supports that wiring.
Bluetooth
The WM1AM2 and WM1ZM2 support high-resolution playback over Bluetooth when the receiving device supports Sony’s LDAC codec. Both the Walkman and the receiver must negotiate LDAC; otherwise the link uses another available Bluetooth codec. Wireless playback is convenient, but Sony’s own guidance favors wired output for better sound quality.

USB-C headphones and the greyed-out controls
Sony warns that some sound-quality settings may be disabled when audio is sent to headphones with a USB Type-C connector. On the WM1ZM2, the affected list includes the equalizer, DSEE Ultimate, DC Phase Linearizer, Dynamic Normalizer, Vinyl Processor and DSD Remastering. This is why the controls can appear greyed out even when the same file and player work normally through the analog jack.
USB-C headphones contain their own digital audio hardware, so the Walkman’s internal processing chain is not necessarily in control of the signal. If you need those Walkman effects, stop playback, disconnect the USB-C headset and connect headphones to the Walkman’s analog output instead. Reopen the sound-settings panel; if the controls return, the connection path—not the file—is the cause. If they remain unavailable, restart the player and confirm that no other digital-output accessory is still connected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step-by-step setup for a high-resolution listening session
- Verify the file. Check the track’s actual sample rate, bit depth and whether it is PCM or DSD. Do not infer quality from the FLAC or WAV extension alone.
- Choose the output. For the least restricted processing, use the Walkman’s analog headphone jack; use the 4.4 mm balanced output only with a correctly wired balanced cable. If using Bluetooth, confirm that the receiver supports LDAC.
- Open the Walkman sound-effects panel. Select the page that lists Direct Source, the 10-band equalizer, DSEE Ultimate, DC Phase Linearizer, Dynamic Normalizer and Vinyl Processor. Firmware wording can vary, but these are the controls Sony lists for the WM1ZM2.
- Set the baseline. Turn Direct Source on, put all equalizer bands at 0 dB, and turn the other effects off. Play a familiar, well-recorded track for several minutes.
- Change one variable. If the source is compressed or CD quality, toggle DSEE Ultimate and compare. For a tonal preference, disable Direct Source, make a small EQ adjustment or select one DC Phase character; do not change several controls at once.
- Match loudness before judging. A louder setting often sounds more detailed. Reduce the output level of the louder option as closely as you can before deciding whether an effect is actually preferable.
- Save a source-specific habit. Keep the neutral profile for native hi-res albums, a DSEE profile for lower-resolution or compressed material, and Dynamic Normalizer only for playlists where level jumps are the problem.
Supported formats and headroom for a hi-res library
Sony’s 2026 WM1ZM2 specifications list playback support up to PCM 384 kHz/32-bit and DSD 11.2 MHz. The listed formats include FLAC, WAV, Apple Lossless, AIFF and MQA. A file above those limits cannot gain detail by enabling an effect; it must be converted or played on hardware that supports its native format.
| Specification | What Sony lists for WM1ZM2 | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum PCM | 384 kHz/32-bit | Files within this ceiling can be decoded without down-converting for an unsupported rate. |
| Maximum DSD | 11.2 MHz | Native DSD playback is supported up to this rate; DSD Remastering remains an optional processing choice. |
| Internal storage | 256 GB rated capacity; approximately 215 GB available in Sony’s specification | System software uses part of the rated capacity, so size a library from the available figure. |
| Expansion | microSD slot | Use a suitably sized, compatible card when a high-resolution library exceeds internal space. |
These figures describe the player’s capability, not a promise that every Bluetooth receiver, USB-C headset or music application will preserve the same path. Check the output connection and the receiving device whenever a setting disappears or a format is converted.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Leaving every enhancement enabled. Multiple changes make it impossible to know what altered the sound. Return to Direct Source, flat EQ and effects off, then add one control.
- Using DSEE Ultimate on every FLAC automatically. Identify whether the FLAC is CD quality or genuinely high-resolution first. DSEE’s documented purpose is compressed and CD-quality enhancement, not mandatory processing for native hi-res.
- Calling phase or vinyl effects “more resolution.” DC Phase Linearizer and Vinyl Processor change character; neither creates information absent from the recording.
- Judging Dynamic Normalizer on an album. If the album’s quiet-to-loud shape matters, keep it off. Reserve it for playlists where consistent loudness is the priority.
- Trying to adjust greyed-out controls while connected by USB-C. Switch to the analog headphone output, because Sony lists USB-C output as a condition that can disable these effects.
- Assuming Bluetooth is automatically high resolution. LDAC support is required on the receiving device. A wired connection remains Sony’s better-quality recommendation.
A simple decision rule
Use three questions before changing anything: How much processing do I want? Direct Source minimizes it. Do I want a tonal character? DC Phase Linearizer and Vinyl Processor provide character, while EQ provides a user-set curve. What is the source and connection? DSEE Ultimate is source-dependent, Dynamic Normalizer is playlist-dependent, and USB-C can remove the controls entirely. Answering those questions keeps the setting choice tied to an audible purpose instead of the file label.
