Sony’s current US catalog includes five BRAVIA Theater soundbars with different channel layouts, speaker counts, and subwoofer bundles. The right fit depends on whether you want a single bar or a package with a wireless subwoofer, what you plan to spend, and whether your TV supports the features you want. Sony’s descriptions are specifications, not independent sound-quality test results, so this is a practical shortlist rather than a tested ranking.
How the five Sony soundbars differ
Sony describes all five models as compatible with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. That format compatibility does not, by itself, establish how immersive a particular setup will sound. The BRAVIA Theater Bar 9, Bar 8, and Bar 7 are described by speaker count; Bar 6 and Bar 5 are described by channel layout and include a wireless subwoofer.

Choose Bar 9 if you want the highest-listed speaker count in this group
Sony lists 13 speakers in the BRAVIA Theater Bar 9 and compatible expansion options. It is the premium single-bar choice in this shortlist, but the speaker count is not proof that it will sound better in every room or with every TV. Compare the bar’s current price with a complete setup that includes any separate bass or rear-speaker accessories you intend to add.

Choose Bar 8 for a lower catalog tier than Bar 9
The BRAVIA Theater Bar 8 is listed with 11 speakers and Dolby Atmos/DTS:X compatibility. Sony places it below Bar 9 in listed price, and identifies compatible add-ons. It may be a sensible middle option if you want a single-bar configuration and do not need to buy at the top of this shortlist’s price range.
Consider Bar 7 as another single-bar configuration
Sony lists nine speakers for the BRAVIA Theater Bar 7, along with Dolby Atmos/DTS:X compatibility and compatible subwoofer and rear-speaker options. It gives buyers another way to compare a bar-first purchase with a later expansion path. Check the current cost of the bar and the exact accessories together rather than assuming an upgrade will be inexpensive.

Compare the box contents and the space needed for both components with a single-bar model; the bundle changes what you receive up front, but the catalog specification does not establish how it will perform in your room.

The BRAVIA Theater Bar 5 is listed as a 3.1-channel soundbar with a wireless subwoofer and Dolby Atmos/DTS:X compatibility. Its configuration is distinct from Bar 6’s 3.1.2-channel layout. Compare their current prices and package contents before deciding whether the additional channel designation on Bar 6 matters for your setup.

How to compare total cost and upgrade options
For Bar 9, Bar 8, and Bar 7, distinguish the bar’s price from the cost of a system with separate bass or rear speakers. Bar 6 and Bar 5 are listed with wireless subwoofers, so make sure you are comparing complete packages rather than a bundled system against a bar-only price.
Sony lists optional wireless subwoofers including BRAVIA Theater Sub 7, Sub 8, Sub 9, SA-SW3, and SA-SW5, and wireless rear speakers including BRAVIA Theater Rear 8, Rear 9, SA-RS3S, and SA-RS5. These are not universal accessories: verify that the exact accessory model and regional version work with the specific soundbar before buying. Sony’s catalog identifies compatible product families.

Check your TV before choosing a bar
Do not assume that every BRAVIA feature works with every BRAVIA Theater bar. Sony’s compatibility guidance lists supported TV and audio-product combinations, and notes that some older TV years have narrower support. Check both exact model numbers and the feature you intend to use in Sony’s BRAVIA TV and audio-product compatibility information before purchase. The soundbar’s advertised audio-format compatibility is only one part of a working setup; your TV’s connections and supported features matter too.

What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
Speaker counts and channel labels help distinguish configurations, but they are not direct measurements of sound quality. The catalog information does not establish a universal winner, measured performance in a particular room, or which model is best for a given TV size. A separate Sony product illustrates the level of detail available on support pages: the HT-S2000 is specified with five amplifier channels, 250 W total output, a built-in subwoofer, HDMI eARC/ARC, optical input, and Bluetooth 5.2.
