The right Sony soundbar with a subwoofer depends first on what “with a subwoofer” means to you: a separate wireless unit included in the system, a bass driver built into the bar, or an optional add-on compatible with a particular model. Sony’s specifications document all three arrangements. They do not establish that one of these models sounds best in every room, so the picks below are based on configuration and listed features—not comparative listening tests.
The examples and links here are from Sony’s US pages; model names and availability can vary by region. Check the listing for your market before buying.

Which Sony soundbar and subwoofer setup should you choose?
| Setup | Example | What Sony lists | May suit you if… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soundbar with a separate wireless subwoofer | HT-S400 | 2.1 channels, 330 W total output, wireless subwoofer, HDMI ARC, optical input and Bluetooth 5.0. These are Sony specifications, not independent performance measurements. Sony HT-S400 specifications | You want a documented complete system with a separate subwoofer and straightforward connection options. |
| Soundbar with height channels and a separate wireless subwoofer | BRAVIA Theatre Bar 6 | Sony’s US catalog lists a 3.1.2-channel system with a wireless subwoofer and Dolby Atmos/DTS:X compatibility. The cited catalog listing does not state additional connection or dimension details. Sony soundbar catalog | You are comparing systems by their documented channel layout and listed audio-format support. |
| Soundbar with a subwoofer built in | HT-A7000 | 7.1.2 channels and a built-in subwoofer. Sony’s cited specification page does not state an included separate subwoofer. Sony HT-A7000 specifications | You are considering an integrated bass-driver arrangement rather than a system that comes with a separate subwoofer box. |
Channel count describes a system layout; it does not, by itself, prove that a soundbar will sound better in your room. Likewise, the HT-S400’s 330 W figure is Sony’s stated total output, not a directly comparable measure of listening quality.
What “with a subwoofer” means in practice
Separate wireless subwoofer included
A system such as the HT-S400 pairs the soundbar with a separate wireless subwoofer. “Wireless” refers to the subwoofer connection; the unit still needs a suitable place in the room and power. Check the product listing for exactly what is included in the version sold in your region.

- SOUND STRAIGHT FROM CINEMA: Experience authentic cinema surround sound in your living room. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X create an immersive multi-dimensional soundscape that brings movies to life with the creator’s intent.
- CENTER SPEAKER FOR CLEAR DIALOGUE: Catch every word in the scene with a dedicated center channel speaker that ensures voices remain clear across all content.
- WIRELESS SUBWOOFER INCLUDED: A powerful wireless subwoofer with a large 160mm speaker unit delivers a deeper, richer bass sound.
- SOUND FROM ABOVE: Experience sound positioned in vertical space with Sony's Vertical Surround Engine, no in-ceiling or up-firing speakers needed.
- SOUNDS FROM SIDES: Hear a wide surround field using only front speakers with digital S-Force Pro.
Subwoofer built into the soundbar
The HT-A7000’s specification lists a built-in subwoofer. That is a different physical arrangement from a bar packaged with a separate bass unit; do not assume that “subwoofer” means an extra box is included.
Optional subwoofer added later
Sony sells optional wireless subwoofers for specified soundbar models. Compatibility is model-specific, not universal across Sony products. Consult Sony’s optional-speaker compatibility guidance for the exact bar and accessory before purchase.

When an optional Sony subwoofer is compatible
Sony’s support guidance lists the BRAVIA Theatre Bar 7 (HT-A7100), Bar 8 (HT-A8000) and Bar 9 (HT-A9000) with the BRAVIA Theatre Sub 7 (SA-SW7), Sub 8 (SA-SW8), Sub 9 (SA-SW9), SA-SW3 and SA-SW5. The same guidance says models may not be sold in every region and advises updating devices to current firmware. App requirements may apply to newer BRAVIA Connect-compatible devices.

Check these details before choosing
- TV connection: If you want the HT-S400, Sony lists HDMI ARC and optical input, as well as Bluetooth 5.0. Confirm that your TV has a connection you can use and check the soundbar’s setup instructions for the connection you choose.
- Audio formats: The BRAVIA Theatre Bar 6 catalog listing names Dolby Atmos and DTS:X compatibility. Match listed format support to the content and setup you actually use; a format listing alone does not establish how it will sound in your room.
- Placement: A separate subwoofer needs its own floor or shelf space and access to power. Measure the intended spot and check the exact model’s dimensions in its regional product documentation; the sources cited here do not provide dimensions for all three examples.
- Optional upgrades: If you may add a subwoofer later, confirm the exact soundbar model in Sony’s compatibility guidance before buying either component.
- Region and availability: The cited product pages are US sources. Confirm local naming, included components and current availability on Sony’s page for your market.
How to make the choice
- Choose a separate wireless subwoofer system if you want a distinct subwoofer unit included from the outset; the HT-S400 is the example here with specific connection details documented by Sony.
- Choose based on channel layout and listed format support if those features matter to your setup; Sony’s catalog lists the BRAVIA Theatre Bar 6 as 3.1.2-channel with a wireless subwoofer and Dolby Atmos/DTS:X compatibility.
- Consider the HT-A7000 if a built-in subwoofer configuration is more appropriate than a separate included box, and verify any optional accessory against Sony’s compatibility guidance.
- Before ordering, confirm the local product listing, the components included, connection compatibility with your TV and the available space for the bar and any separate subwoofer.
