It includes four removable plates—one ridged grill plate, one smooth griddle plate and two waffle plates—plus a waffle batter cup and double-ended spatula. The optional MGGP01 flat-and-griddle set is an extra or replacement, not a requirement for those core uses.
What comes with the MGF01
The MGF01 package is more complete than the word “grill” might suggest. Smeg specifies four interchangeable aluminium plates with a non-stick ceramic coating: one grill plate, one smooth griddle plate and a matched pair of waffle plates. The product description identifies the coating as PFAS-free and says the plates are dishwasher-safe.

You also get a measuring cup for waffle batter and a double-ended spatula. The cup helps portion batter into the waffle cavities, while the spatula is intended for lifting food and scraping residue without reaching for a metal tool that could damage the cooking surface.

Because the plates are removable and interchangeable, the appliance does not need a separate insert for each preset. You select the surface that suits the food, install it in the upper and lower positions as required, and choose the relevant cooking mode or preset.

What each plate is for
Grill plate: ridges for searing and contact cooking
The ridged grill plate is the choice when you want direct contact from raised lines rather than a completely flat sear. It suits panini and burgers, and it can be used for meat or vegetables when grill marks and channels for rendered fat are useful. In contact mode, the upper and lower plates close around the food; in BBQ mode, the cooking surfaces can be opened out for a larger exposed area, subject to the MGF01 manual’s setup instructions.
Griddle plate: the everyday flat surface
The smooth griddle plate is better for foods that need continuous support. Eggs and pancakes can spread across a flat area instead of catching on ridges, and chopped or sliced vegetables have more direct contact. It is also the plate to choose when a recipe calls for an even, uninterrupted cooking surface rather than grill lines.
Waffle plates: always use the pair
Waffle cooking requires both waffle plates. The matching cavities in the upper and lower plates compress and shape the batter; a single waffle plate cannot produce the intended pattern on its own. Use the supplied cup to portion batter, then follow the appliance’s waffle preset or the instructions for your regional model.
How the plates relate to MGF01 cooking modes
Smeg documents three cooking modes—contact, oven and BBQ—and presets for panini, waffles and burgers. The mode controls how the lids and heating program are used, while the plate determines the food-facing surface. A burger preset does not turn a smooth plate into a ridged one, and a waffle preset still needs the two waffle inserts installed.

- Contact mode: close the plates around food for two-sided cooking. The grill plate is the natural match for panini and burgers.
- Oven mode: use the opened or height-adjusted configuration described in the manual when the food should be heated from above without being tightly compressed.
- BBQ mode: open the MultiGrill so both cooking surfaces are available. A flat-and-griddle combination can be useful when several foods need different surfaces at the same time.
Smeg also states that its Sear function heats a plate above 250°C for 30 seconds. Treat that as a manufacturer specification for the programmed function, not as a promise that every food, batch or kitchen will reach the same result. Preheating, food thickness, ambient temperature and the selected plate all affect cooking.
Do you need the optional MGGP01 set?
MGGP01 is described by Smeg as a “Flat and griddle plate set for the SMEG MultiGrill” and is explicitly marked “Compatible With MGF01.” It is therefore the relevant exact-model accessory for an MGF01 owner who wants another flat-and-griddle set. It is not an additional waffle kit and it does not replace the need for the supplied pair of waffle plates.
Buy MGGP01 when one of these situations applies
- Replacement: an original plate is damaged, warped or has a coating problem and you need a matching set.
- Spare capacity: you want a second set available while the first set is in the dishwasher or cooling.
- Frequent flat cooking: eggs, pancakes and vegetables are regular parts of your meals, so the smooth surface gets more use than the ridged one.
- Larger or mixed batches: when cooking for several people, a second set can reduce the time spent waiting for a surface to become available or be cleaned.
Skip MGGP01 when the included set already covers your cooking
If your routine is mainly panini, burgers and waffles, the MGF01’s supplied grill, griddle and waffle plates already provide those functions. Buying MGGP01 in that situation adds duplicate flat surfaces rather than a new cooking capability. The sensible decision is to compare the delivered price and local stock with how often you would actually need a spare or a second flat surface.

Compatibility: check the exact model and country
“MGF01” identifies the MultiGrill family, but electrical versions can differ by market. Smeg’s UK listing specifies 220–240 V and a UK/Singapore plug, while regional catalog information shows other plug and voltage configurations. Do not assume that an appliance purchased in one country can be connected safely in another, or that every regional listing has identical electrical specifications.

Before buying an appliance or accessory, check the complete model code on the rating label, carton or documentation and match it to the seller’s compatibility statement. For MGGP01, the relevant published compatibility wording is specifically for MGF01. If a listing names a different MultiGrill code, ask the seller or Smeg to confirm rather than relying on photographs or the general product name.
- Confirm the country in which the appliance will be used.
- Match the voltage and plug configuration to the local supply.
- Check whether the accessory listing says it is compatible with MGF01, not merely with an unspecified MultiGrill.
- Keep the receipt and packaging until the model match and fit have been verified.
Choosing a plate for common foods
Panini and filled sandwiches
Start with the ridged grill plate and contact mode. The ridges provide the characteristic pressed-grill surface, while the closing action heats both sides. Avoid overfilling: excessive filling can prevent proper contact and force ingredients toward the hinge.
Burgers and other seared foods
The grill plate is the default choice for burgers and similarly shaped portions. Use the appliance’s burger preset if it matches your recipe and thickness, then verify doneness with a food thermometer where food-safety guidance requires it. The Sear function’s brief high-temperature phase is a programmed step, not a substitute for checking the center of thick food.
Eggs, pancakes and vegetables
Use the smooth griddle plate. Its uninterrupted surface makes it easier to spread batter, keep an egg intact and turn vegetables with the supplied spatula. In BBQ mode, the open layout can let you cook more than one item at once, but keep raw and ready-to-eat foods separated and clean the plates between incompatible ingredients.

Waffles
Install both waffle plates, measure batter with the supplied cup and select the waffle preset. Do not substitute one waffle plate with a grill or griddle plate: the cavity pattern depends on the matched pair.
Swapping plates safely
- Stop the cooking program and open the MultiGrill according to the manual.
- Allow the plates to cool enough to handle safely. Do not pull a hot plate out by its edge.
- Release the plate using the appliance’s plate-release mechanism; never force a locked insert.
- Check that the replacement plate is the correct shape and that its locating points are free of food debris.
- Seat the plate evenly until it locks, then repeat for the second side when the recipe requires a pair.
- Close the appliance gently and select the mode or preset for the food.

Smeg describes the plates as removable and dishwasher-safe. Let them cool before removal, then follow the manual’s instructions for your model and dishwasher. Dishwasher-safe does not mean that abrasive detergent, a sharp utensil or a damaged rack is harmless to a non-stick ceramic coating.

- Use the supplied double-ended spatula to lift residue instead of metal knives or forks.
- Remove stuck food after the plate has cooled; forcing a hot plate under running water can cause thermal stress.
- Inspect the coating after washing. If a plate is cracked, badly warped or shedding coating, stop using it and seek a replacement.
- Dry plates fully before storage so moisture does not remain around the mounting points.
- Store the waffle pair together and keep flat plates separated with a soft layer if they are stacked.
Common buying and usage mistakes
Buying MGGP01 expecting extra cooking modes
MGGP01 changes the available flat cooking surfaces; it does not add a new heating system or a new preset. Purchase it for capacity, replacement or frequent flat-food cooking, not as an upgrade to the appliance’s control software.

Assuming a plate is universal across Smeg grills
Physical similarity is not proof of compatibility. The published accessory match is MGF01, so compare the exact model code before ordering.
Using only one waffle plate
The waffle pattern is formed by two matching plates. Install the pair and check that both are seated before preheating.
Ignoring regional electrical details
A plug adapter does not change voltage. Verify the regional specification and use the appliance only with a supply suitable for that version.

Statements about plate materials, dishwasher safety and the Sear temperature are Smeg’s published specifications. They describe the product design and programmed function; they are not independent durability, speed or energy tests.
A practical purchase checklist
- Write down the complete MGF01 model code and country of purchase.
- Confirm that the box contains one grill plate, one smooth griddle plate and two waffle plates.
- Decide whether your actual gap is replacement, spare capacity or more flat-food area.
- If you need that gap, verify that the accessory listing names MGGP01 and says it is compatible with MGF01.
- Compare delivered price, shipping, return terms and stock in your market; those details vary by seller and date.
- Keep the manual accessible for plate release, cooking positions, cleaning and electrical warnings.
Bottom line for most MGF01 owners
Buy the MGF01 first and use the supplied plates. The grill plate covers pressed sandwiches and seared foods, the smooth griddle handles flat ingredients, and the two waffle plates support the waffle preset. Add MGGP01 only when you need a replacement, a dedicated spare or more flat cooking capacity.
