Review app permissions, the “Get your location from this phone” option, linked services and the Privacy Notice. These controls are separate, so changing one layer does not reliably change the other. Menu names can differ by phone model, software version and region.
Know which SmartThings control you are changing
SmartThings privacy and alert behavior is split across three places. The SmartThings app controls its own permissions, location use, linked accounts, device notification choices and in-app messages. Your phone’s operating system controls whether SmartThings may display notifications at all. Individual devices and third-party services can have additional settings that are not covered by the SmartThings app settings page.

| SmartThings Messages and activity | In-app activity categories shown for a selected location | SmartThings → Messages, then a location and More options | This is separate from traditional phone-panel notifications. |
| Device or linked-service settings | Device-specific events and data handling by connected services | The device’s own settings or the linked service’s account controls | Samsung’s general SmartThings settings instructions do not cover every device or third-party app. |
Review SmartThings privacy settings first
Audit app permissions
Open SmartThings → Menu → Settings → Permissions and examine every permission currently granted. Keep access that a feature you actively use needs, and revoke access that has no clear purpose for your household.
Do not assume that every permission can be disabled without consequences. A permission may be required for a selected automation or device feature; removing it can make that feature stop working or reduce what SmartThings can display. Change one permission at a time, then test the automation or device function that matters to you.

Samsung describes app permissions as the access SmartThings uses for its features. The exact categories and wording can differ between Galaxy phones, Android releases and regions, so use the labels shown on your device rather than following an older screenshot.
Decide whether SmartThings should use this phone’s location
In SmartThings → Menu → Settings, review Get your location from this phone. Samsung says this option uses the phone’s location to determine the location used by automations and to show other members whether you are at home.
Leave it enabled when location-dependent automations or household presence information are useful. Disable it when you do not want SmartThings using the phone’s location for those purposes. Before switching it off, identify automations that depend on arrival, departure or presence; they may no longer behave as expected.

Remove linked services you no longer use
Open SmartThings → Menu → Settings → Linked services. Review the connected accounts and disconnect services that the household has abandoned, replaced or no longer recognizes.
Removing a link prevents SmartThings from maintaining that connection through the account, but it does not explain what the other service may already retain. Samsung’s general settings guide does not enumerate every third-party data flow. Read the linked service’s current privacy information and account controls if you need to understand its retention, sharing or deletion practices.
After unlinking a service, check your routines and scenes. An automation that relied on the service may fail, show an error or silently lose an action until you edit or remove it.

When reviewing it, pay attention to the services and features you actually use, the account information associated with SmartThings and any choices offered in your region. Record questions or settings you need to revisit before enabling a new integration.
Do not use “Leave SmartThings” as a routine privacy switch
Leave SmartThings is an account departure action, not a temporary notification toggle. Samsung’s US support guide states that it erases all SmartThings data and the SmartThings service from your Samsung account.
Before selecting it, identify routines, device memberships, locations and linked services that you may need later. Review the current Privacy Notice and any on-screen warning. The support material cited here does not specify retention timing, how every linked service is handled or whether recovery is possible, so treat the action as potentially irreversible and save any information you are legally or operationally required to keep.

A targeted selection is usually safer than a blanket switch-off. Enable alerts for events that require action—such as a door, leak sensor or appliance state you monitor—and leave low-value status updates disabled. If several family members share a location, decide whether every member needs the same alerts or whether only one person should receive them.
After changing the list, trigger a harmless test event when possible. Confirm which device generated the alert, whether it appeared in the app and whether the phone displayed it. Some devices expose additional event choices in their own settings; those are separate from the general SmartThings device list.
Check the phone’s SmartThings notification permission
Android and Galaxy menu paths vary, but the control is generally under Phone Settings → Notifications → App notifications (or See all) → SmartThings. Make sure notifications are allowed if you expect phone-panel alerts.
Review categories, sound, vibration, pop-up or banner behavior, lock-screen visibility and any notification grouping options exposed by your phone. You can allow urgent categories while silencing routine ones, depending on the categories your software version provides.
Samsung distinguishes traditional notifications in the phone’s Notification panel from activity notifications and messages inside SmartThings. Therefore, enabling a device notification in SmartThings does not guarantee a banner if the operating system blocks the app, and allowing the app at the operating-system level does not automatically subscribe you to every device event.
Manage in-app activity messages by location and category
For messages that remain inside SmartThings, open SmartThings → Messages. Select a location if the app asks you to, then open More options and hide or unhide the message categories you want to see.
Best Value
The message view covers activity from the past couple of days, according to Samsung’s guidance. Use it to reduce clutter without disabling every phone alert. For example, you might hide routine usage categories in the message feed while retaining a phone notification for a device event that needs immediate attention.

Fix a SmartThings alert that never arrives
Work through the layers in order. Changing several settings at once makes it difficult to identify the cause.
- Check the phone’s data connection. Confirm that Wi-Fi or mobile data works in another app. A notification cannot be delivered reliably while the phone is offline.
- Check the device connection. Verify that the SmartThings device can reach its Wi-Fi access point or other required hub connection. A device shown offline cannot report a new event normally.
- Check the device selection in SmartThings. Return to SmartThings settings and confirm that the device is included in notification preferences and that the event type you need is enabled.
- Check the operating-system permission. In the phone’s notification settings, confirm that SmartThings is allowed and that the relevant category is not silenced or blocked on the lock screen.
- Check Messages. Open SmartThings → Messages, select the correct location and inspect hidden categories under More options. An event may be present in the app even when no banner was shown.
- Retest after each change. Use a low-risk event, such as opening a monitored door when nobody is relying on the alert, and note whether it appears in the app and on the phone.
Samsung Hong Kong support specifically states that notifications are not provided for devices connected by Bluetooth. That statement is regional guidance for Hong Kong products, not a universal rule for every SmartThings device or market. If your product uses Bluetooth, check the local Samsung support page and the device manual before treating the connection type as the explanation.
Account for version and regional differences
Samsung’s Australian notification guidance warns that settings can vary by phone and software version. The same function may appear under a slightly different label, move to another menu or expose fewer notification categories after an update.
- Use the labels displayed in your installed SmartThings app and phone settings.
- Check the support page for your country when a regional instruction conflicts with what you see.
- Consult the device manual for device-specific events, hubs and connection requirements.
- Do not infer that a setting exists on every phone simply because it appears in a Galaxy screenshot.
If a menu is missing, update SmartThings and the phone only through the normal app or system update channel, then recheck the setting. An update can also reset notification categories or introduce a new permission prompt, so verify critical alerts after major software changes.

Final privacy and notification check
- Permissions match the features your household actually uses.
- Location use is an intentional choice, with presence visibility and location-based automations understood.
- Linked services are recognizable and still needed.
- You have read the current Privacy Notice rather than relying on an outdated summary.
- Critical devices are selected in SmartThings notification preferences.
- SmartThings is allowed to notify the phone, with suitable category, sound and lock-screen behavior.
- SmartThings Messages shows the activity categories and location you intend to keep.
- Any disconnected service has been removed from routines that depended on it.
- You have not selected Leave SmartThings unless you intend to erase the service’s data from the Samsung account.
