AirPlay 2 works on selected televisions from LG, Samsung, Sony, VIZIO and Roku, but compatibility is model-, year-, region- and firmware-specific. The television brand alone is not enough. Find the exact model number, verify it against the manufacturer’s current compatibility list, update its software, and then look for AirPlay in the TV’s settings.
This guide lists the documented model families, explains the menu paths and iPhone test, and shows what to do when a television is not an AirPlay destination. AirPlay 2 can stream video, photos and audio or mirror an Apple device; it does not automatically mean the television supports Apple HomeKit.

AirPlay 2 compatibility at a glance
Apple’s “Works with Apple AirPlay” badge identifies compatible televisions and accessories. Apple names LG, Samsung, Sony and VIZIO as participating television manufacturers, while Roku documents AirPlay 2 support for specific Roku TV families and players. Because manufacturers sell different models in different countries and sometimes add support through firmware, always confirm the exact model rather than assuming every television in a series is compatible.
| Platform | Documented coverage | Software or qualification | HomeKit status |
|---|---|---|---|
| LG | OLED, QNED, UHD and NANO families from model years 2020–2024, with year-specific series exceptions | webOS 5.0 through webOS 24, depending on model year | Verify separately; AirPlay availability alone is not proof of HomeKit support |
| Samsung | Selected QLED, Neo QLED, OLED, CU, BU, AU and Lifestyle families from 2020–2023 | Use the model’s current firmware and Samsung’s compatibility article | Samsung AirPlay-compatible televisions cannot be added to Apple’s Home app |
| Sony | All Google TV models plus named Android TV families | Some W8K and X74K/X75K models require a software update; older families gain support through updates | Sony states that supported Google TV models include AirPlay 2 and HomeKit |
| Roku | Roku TV families and specified Roku streaming devices | Roku OS 9.4 or newer | Check the individual Roku device and current OS |
| VIZIO | Apple’s directory includes M-Series generations from 2016–2023 | Region, exact model and firmware can change eligibility | Check the exact listing; do not infer HomeKit from AirPlay |
“Compatible” means the television can receive AirPlay 2 from a supported Apple device on the same network. It does not promise that every video application will permit AirPlay, or that all AirPlay features are identical across operating systems.

LG televisions that support AirPlay 2
LG’s support table, updated September 3, 2026, organizes compatibility by webOS generation and model year. The table below reproduces the documented family coverage; a regional suffix or an unlisted model can still require individual confirmation.

|---|---|---|
| 2024 | webOS 24 | All OLED and QNED models; UHD UT and NANO series |
| 2023 | webOS 23 | All OLED and QNED models; UHD UR and NANO series |

LG’s menu check
On a compatible LG television, open the Home Dashboard and look for AirPlay. The wording can appear as AirPlay or Apple AirPlay. If the option is missing, record the model number and webOS version, install any offered software update, and recheck the LG support table for your region. The presence of an Apple TV app is not sufficient evidence of AirPlay support.

Samsung’s menu check and the HomeKit limitation
Open Settings > General > Apple AirPlay Settings. AirPlay settings may include an on/off control, a code requirement and a list of previously connected devices. If that menu does not exist, verify the exact model and firmware rather than relying on the television’s app store.
AirPlay and HomeKit are separate capabilities on Samsung. Apple explicitly documents that Samsung AirPlay-compatible smart televisions cannot be added to the Apple Home app; see Apple’s Home accessory guidance. A Samsung television can therefore receive AirPlay while remaining unavailable for HomeKit scenes or controls.
Sony televisions: Google TV and Android TV coverage
Google TV models
Sony says that all of its Google TV models support Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. Sony also identifies the W8K and X74K/X75K families as requiring a software update before AirPlay 2 is available. Update the television first, then check its network and AirPlay settings.

Supported Android TV families
Sony’s Android TV list includes these families: A9/A9S; Z8H/ZH8; A8/A8H; XH95/X95H in specified sizes; XH90/X90H/X91H/XH92; KM-X9000H; XH85/X85H/XH91; XH81; and XH80/X80H/X81xH. Sony lists additional families that gain support through software updates: Z9G/ZG9, A9G/AG9, XG95/X95G, XG85/X85G in specified sizes, Z9F/ZF9 and A9F/AF9.
“Specified sizes” matters: Sony’s list does not make every screen size in those series automatically eligible. Match the full model code and screen size to Sony’s page. Regional naming can also differ, so use the code printed on the television rather than a retailer’s shortened product name.

Roku states that a compatible device must run Roku OS 9.4 or higher to use AirPlay and HomeKit. On a Roku television or player, open the system update screen and install the newest available Roku OS before testing. A device with an older operating-system build can fail the AirPlay test even when its model number is listed as compatible.
VIZIO models and Apple’s accessory directory
Apple identifies VIZIO as an AirPlay television manufacturer, and Apple’s accessory directory lists VIZIO M-Series generations from 2016 through 2023 among AirPlay-enabled televisions and video accessories. That range is a directory entry, not a guarantee for every regional variant or firmware release. Use the exact VIZIO model page and the current Apple directory entry for a final check.

- Find the complete model number. On the television, open the Settings menu and look under About, Support, System Information or a similarly named information page. You can also read the label on the rear of the set. Record every letter, number and regional suffix.
- Identify the operating system and software version. Note webOS, Google TV, Android TV or Roku OS and the installed version. The operating system can determine whether AirPlay is built in and whether an update is required.
- Check the manufacturer’s official compatibility list. Search the exact model code, not only the brand or series name. Compare the year, screen size where Sony specifies one, country or region and firmware notes.
- Install pending firmware. Sony identifies models that need updates, and Roku requires Roku OS 9.4 or newer. LG and Samsung can also expose AirPlay controls only after the television is on a supported software release. Restart the set after updating if the manufacturer requests it.
- Locate the television’s AirPlay control. LG uses the Home Dashboard; Samsung uses Settings > General > Apple AirPlay Settings. Other systems may label the control AirPlay, Apple AirPlay, or AirPlay and HomeKit. Enable AirPlay and review any code or access setting.
- Put both devices on one Wi-Fi network. Connect the iPhone or iPad and the television to the same network, with both devices powered on and nearby. Guest networks or separate wireless bands can place them on different local networks even when the network names look similar.
- Start the AirPlay test from the iPhone or iPad. Open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and select the television. For supported video, photo or audio apps, use the app’s AirPlay button instead. An onscreen passcode may appear on the television; enter it on the Apple device.
- Confirm both directions of use you need. A successful screen-mirroring test proves that the receiver is reachable, but an individual app can still restrict AirPlay. Test the specific video or audio app you plan to use.
If the television does not appear in Screen Mirroring
- Recheck the model code. Similar names can hide different years, sizes or regional variants. Compare the complete code with the manufacturer’s list.
- Update before changing settings. A listed model on an old webOS, Google TV, Android TV or Roku OS build may not advertise AirPlay until its software is current.
- Verify the network. Apple recommends that both devices be on the same Wi-Fi network, updated, switched on and nearby. A television connected by Ethernet can still work, but it must be on the same local network as the iPhone or iPad.
- Check AirPlay access settings. Make sure AirPlay is enabled and that a restriction such as “Ask for code” is not being mistaken for a failure. Enter the code shown on the television when prompted.
- Restart both devices. Power-cycle the television and restart the iPhone or iPad, then repeat the Screen Mirroring test. Apple specifically recommends restarting when a compatible device is not appearing.
- Separate receiver failure from app restrictions. If Screen Mirroring finds the television but one app does not show an AirPlay button, that app may not support AirPlay. Try a photo or another supported media source to test the receiver itself.
- Use an external receiver when built-in support is absent. An Apple TV 4K is an Apple-supported AirPlay destination. Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K model 3820 is another documented receiver when it runs compatible Roku OS.
What AirPlay 2 provides—and what it does not
Functions you can expect
- Stream compatible video from an iPhone or iPad to the television.
- Show photos on the large screen.
- Send audio to the television or a compatible receiver.
- Mirror the iPhone or iPad display for apps and content that permit mirroring.
Limits to account for
- AirPlay is not the same as HomeKit. Sony says supported Google TV models include both, while Apple documents Samsung AirPlay televisions as unable to join the Home app.
- App support varies. A television can be a valid AirPlay receiver even when a particular streaming app blocks AirPlay or omits the AirPlay control.
- Compatibility is not permanent across every configuration. Model year, regional variant and firmware can change the result, so retain the exact model code when troubleshooting or buying a replacement.
- AirPlay does not define picture or sound quality. Compare the television’s resolution, HDR formats, speakers or audio outputs separately from its AirPlay feature.
How to choose between a compatible TV and an external receiver
If you are replacing a television, compare more than the AirPlay badge. A built-in receiver avoids another box, HDMI input and power socket, while an external receiver can add AirPlay to a television that otherwise meets your picture and audio requirements.
| Decision factor | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Exact coverage | Is the full model code, screen size and regional version listed, or only a broad series? |
| Software requirement | Which webOS, Google TV, Android TV or Roku OS version is required, and can the set still receive updates? |
| HomeKit need | Do you need Apple Home app control, or only video, photos, audio and screen mirroring? |
| Picture and audio | Does the television meet your resolution, HDR and sound requirements independently of AirPlay? |
| Receiver alternative | Would an Apple TV 4K or a documented Roku receiver cost less and avoid replacing a functioning display? |
| App behavior | Will the particular apps you use allow AirPlay, or will you need their native television apps? |
For an existing set, an external receiver is usually the least disruptive solution when the panel and other features are satisfactory. For a new purchase, verify the exact regional model and update policy before relying on a manufacturer’s broad “AirPlay compatible” description.
