Roku, VIZIO, LG, Amazon Fire TV televisions and some Sony BRAVIA models provide documented controls for limiting automatic viewing-data collection. Independent testing also identifies controls on Samsung, TCL and Hisense sets. The names differ—ACR, Viewing Data, Viewing Information Services, Interactive Service and Enhanced Viewing Service—and disabling one option does not stop every form of data processing. Use the model-specific labels and paths below, then check your television’s current support page before changing settings.

What “viewing-data collection” means on a smart TV

Most televisions discussed here use automatic content recognition (ACR) or a related service. The software analyzes what appears on screen and can associate programs, advertisements or other content with time, device and account information. Depending on the implementation, recognition can include the built-in tuner, antenna channels, streaming apps and devices connected through HDMI.

Roku’s disclosure explains the scope plainly: “When you enable Smart TV Experience during device set up, or when you select ‘Use info from TV inputs’ from the Settings menu, Roku will, through ACR technology, collect information about what you watch and when you watch.” VIZIO similarly describes Viewing Data as information about programming, ads, games, HDMI-connected devices and third-party apps.

ACR is only one category of telemetry. App-use statistics, diagnostics, voice recordings or transcripts, advertising identifiers, account information and data required to deliver a service can have separate controls. Therefore, “turn off ACR” means limiting that recognition feature, not making the television invisible to its manufacturer or every app provider.

How to limit collection on each supported platform

Roku TV: disable Smart TV Experience

  1. Open Settings from the Roku home screen.
  2. Choose Privacy, then Smart TV Experience.
  3. Turn off the Smart TV Experience option. During setup, the equivalent choice may be presented as Use info from TV inputs; decline that option if you do not want ACR across antenna and connected inputs.

Roku’s description covers what is watched, when it is watched and content arriving through TV inputs. This setting does not promise to stop app providers from collecting their own usage data, nor does it disable every Roku service function.

VIZIO: turn off Viewing Data, not just an advertising option

  1. Press the menu button and open All Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & Legal and select Viewing Data. On some older sets, look under Admin & Privacy instead.
  3. Switch Viewing Data off and confirm the choice if prompted.

VIZIO separates Viewing Data from Activity Data. Turning off the former limits the ACR-based category; it does not turn off Activity Data or other processing. VIZIO states that performance and online services continue to work and that historical Viewing Data logs are deleted from its database after the setting is disabled.

LG webOS: withdraw optional agreements

LG treats ACR, voice recognition and interest-based advertising as optional features governed by agreements. Open the TV’s privacy, user-agreement or terms screen and look for controls that let you review, manage or withdraw those agreements. The exact menu names vary by webOS version, model and country, so search the settings menu for ACR, voice recognition, interest-based advertising or agreements.

  • More streaming, less searching: With personalized picks right on your Home Screen, quick access to the sports and entertainment you watch most, and fast and easy search in one place—the days of endless scrolling are over.

In markets covered by LG’s statement, declining optional agreements does not remove core smart functions: streaming applications, live television, HDMI devices and software updates remain available. A different model or region may present a different set of choices, so read the on-screen description before accepting or withdrawing an agreement.

Amazon Fire TV televisions: review four privacy switches

  1. Open Settings, then Preferences and Privacy Settings.
  2. Review Device Usage Data. Turning it off stops processing used for customized marketing and product improvement, according to Amazon’s FAQ, but some processing needed for functions and services continues.
  3. Review Collect App Usage Data and disable it if you do not want that separate app-usage category.
  4. Review Interest-based Ads and change it if you do not want advertising personalization based on the associated data.
  5. If the television receives antenna channels, review Over-the-air Viewing Data. This choice specifically concerns viewing through the TV’s over-the-air tuner.

Fire TV’s design is intentionally granular. Turning off Device Usage Data does not automatically turn off app-usage, interest-based advertising or over-the-air viewing choices.

Sony BRAVIA: find Interactive TV Settings or Samba Interactive TV

  1. Open the TV’s System Preferences.
  2. Search for Interactive TV Settings or Samba Interactive TV. Sony uses both labels across TV types and models.
  3. Disable the interactive-TV or Samba option and confirm any consent withdrawal screen.

Sony describes Samba Interactive TV as collecting information for service operation, recommendations and personalized advertising. If neither label appears, check the support page for the exact BRAVIA model and software version; a missing option can reflect model, region or firmware differences rather than a failed change.

Samsung, TCL and Hisense: use the tested labels as search terms

Independent testing identified Viewing Information Services on Samsung, Interactive Service on TCL and Enhanced Viewing Service on Hisense VIDAA. Open Settings and use the built-in search, if available, for the exact phrase. Otherwise inspect privacy, terms, agreements, advertising or smart-service sections.

Those labels are useful starting points, not a promise that every current model exposes the same control. The available evidence does not establish a universal official path for all models, firmware releases or countries. Record the model number and software version before changing anything, then compare the wording with the model’s support documentation.

How to turn off ACR on a TV without disabling useful features

Use this sequence when the menu is unfamiliar:

  1. Identify the platform. Find the model number in About, System Information or on the rear label. Note the operating-system name and software version.
  2. Search the exact vocabulary. Try ACR, viewing data, viewing information, interactive service, enhanced viewing, smart TV experience, Samba, agreements and interest-based ads.
  3. Read the scope statement. Confirm whether the option covers antenna, apps, HDMI inputs or only one source.
  4. Change the viewing-data control first. Avoid assuming an advertising-ID or diagnostics switch controls ACR.
  5. Review adjacent categories separately. Decide whether to change app-usage, voice, diagnostics, account personalization or advertising settings.
  6. Restart only if the TV requests it. A restart can apply a firmware setting, but it is not proof that collection has stopped.
  7. Recheck after an update. Firmware updates can rename, relocate or re-enable consent screens, especially after a reset.

What can continue after you opt out?

There are three common reasons an owner may still see network activity after disabling a viewing-data option.

Separate categories use separate switches

VIZIO’s Activity Data and Amazon’s app-usage, interest-based advertising and device-usage categories illustrate the distinction. A television may continue sending data needed to authenticate an account, deliver an app, provide customer support, detect errors or operate a requested service.

Apps have their own policies

A streaming app running on the TV can collect viewing history under its own account and privacy settings. The TV’s ACR switch generally cannot erase that app-side record.

Model and region rules differ

Consent screens, legal requirements and feature bundles vary by geography, operating system and firmware. LG explicitly qualifies its core-feature promise to supported markets, and Sony says its Samba path depends on TV type and model.

Does disabling the setting actually reduce traffic?

A 2024 peer-reviewed study audited ACR network traffic on Samsung and LG televisions. On the devices studied, ACR operated in multiple viewing modes, including use of an external display, and opting out stopped network traffic to the ACR servers under the study conditions. The researchers also observed differences between UK and US behavior. Those results apply to the tested devices and observed traffic; they do not establish that every model or every telemetry category stops.

Independent testing by RTINGS reported that identified ACR-related traffic stopped or changed dramatically after consent was withdrawn or the relevant option was disabled on a Samsung S95F, Sony Bravia 8 II and LG G5. RTINGS also found differences in how clearly setup presented the choice and whether opting out affected smart features. Treat these as model-specific observations, not a guarantee for another television.

No reliable, directly comparable statistic shows how many viewing events each brand collects or how many owners opt out. The available evidence is experimental and qualitative rather than a cross-brand prevalence survey.

Troubleshooting when a privacy option is missing

  • Search alternate wording: “viewing information,” “interactive TV,” “smart experience,” “enhanced viewing,” “content recognition” and “agreements” may refer to the same general function.
  • Check the input and account: Some choices appear only after the TV is connected to the internet, during initial setup or when an antenna is configured.
  • Check for a software update: Menu locations can move after a webOS, Roku, Fire TV, VIDAA or manufacturer firmware update.
  • Use the exact model support page: A menu shown for one screen size, country or year may not exist on another.
  • Look for a reset consequence: Factory-resetting the TV can present consent screens again and may restore default selections.
  • Do not infer from missing traffic alone: A network monitor may miss encrypted, delayed or app-specific requests. Conversely, traffic from updates or app services does not prove that ACR is still enabled.

Practical decision checklist

  • If you want to limit recognition of antenna and HDMI content, start with Roku Smart TV Experience or VIZIO Viewing Data where those controls are available.
  • If you use an LG TV, review optional agreements rather than looking only for a switch labeled ACR.
  • If you own a Fire TV television, review all four privacy categories because they are independent.
  • If you have a Sony BRAVIA, search both Interactive TV Settings and Samba Interactive TV.
  • If you have Samsung, TCL or Hisense, search for the tested label but verify it against your model’s documentation.
  • After opting out, review app-level privacy settings and account personalization separately.

The Bottom Line

Multiple major smart-TV platforms let you limit ACR or related viewing-data collection, but no single switch stops every form of tracking. Disable the model’s specific viewing-data control, then review app usage, diagnostics, advertising, voice and account settings separately.
