For an Oura ring, the clearest battery-saving setting is Activity Heart Rate: turn it off at Settings > Activity if you can do without heart-rate data for detected activities. Keep the ring properly fitted, its sensors toward your palm, and its software up to date. Use Airplane Mode when you do not need Bluetooth. These are Oura-specific controls, not universal settings for every smart ring.
Which setting saves battery without turning off activity detection?
In the Oura app, open the menu and go to Settings > Activity, then switch off Activity Heart Rate. Automatic Activity Detection (AAD) will still show detected activity in the app, but without heart-rate information, according to Oura’s Automatic Activity Detection guidance.

This is a trade-off, not a free accuracy improvement: you give up workout heart-rate detail to reduce the time the ring spends on that feature. Oura associates Activity Heart Rate with detected activities lasting at least 10 minutes; the ring needs at least 5% battery for this detection. Leave the feature on if heart-rate information for those activities matters more to you than extending charge intervals.

How much battery life can settings change?
Oura’s typical full-charge estimates differ by generation, and actual runtime varies with use, feature configuration, ring size, and battery age. The figures below are manufacturer estimates, not a guarantee for an individual ring.

These estimates and conditions come from Oura’s Ring 4 battery-life guidance. The Ring 4 testing conditions explain that model’s estimate; they should not be assumed to describe the Ring 5 estimate. Battery capacity also declines as a ring ages.
Choose optional measurements according to what you use
Blood Oxygen Sensing is an overnight measurement, so weigh its value to you against the potential runtime reduction. For activity tracking, disabling Activity Heart Rate keeps AAD activity information but removes its heart-rate detail. There is no universal setting combination that guarantees a particular tracking accuracy: use the features your goals require rather than switching off measurements on the assumption that fewer sensors make other readings more accurate.

What improves tracking quality without sacrificing useful data?
Check fit and sensor position
Oura says the sensors should sit against the palm side of the finger for best fit and accurate readings. Use the sizing kit made for your ring’s exact generation, because sizing differs between generations. Oura recommends trying a sizing ring for at least 24 hours, including while sleeping, before choosing a size. Its General FAQs identify the index, middle, or ring finger as recommended options for signal quality. No finger or position guarantees a specific accuracy improvement.

Keep firmware and app current
Firmware updates can include battery or tracking improvements. Oura’s device firmware history lists battery-life improvements for Ring 4 firmware version 2.9.2, released December 10, 2025, and workout-tracking improvements in Gen 3 releases. Updates roll out gradually, so the version available to you may differ during a rollout. Check the Oura app and follow its update instructions rather than assuming a particular version is already available.

Airplane Mode temporarily stops Bluetooth communication between the ring and phone. It can reduce battery use when you do not need app connectivity, while the ring can continue collecting data offline, according to Oura’s General FAQs. The trade-off is that battery notifications will not appear while Airplane Mode is enabled. Turn it off when you need the phone connection or want those notifications.

How do you avoid losing a night of insights?
Charge during a low-activity moment and enable low-battery notifications. Oura warns that a ring with too little battery may not provide a Sleep or Readiness Score, sleep stages, or breakdowns for HRV, respiratory rate, or resting heart rate that night. If the ring is low, charge it before bedtime rather than relying on it to capture the night’s data. Oura’s battery tips cover charging and battery care.

- Oura recommends keeping battery charge between 25% and 80% as a range associated with lower battery deterioration. This is manufacturer guidance for Oura, not a universal rule for every wearable battery.
- Avoid prolonged exposure below −20°C (−4°F) or above 60°C (140°F).
- Do not leave the ring on its charger for more than a week.
What should you change on another brand of smart ring?
The specific menu paths and feature trade-offs above are documented for Oura. Other brands may use different names, controls, or battery-management behavior; check the maker’s instructions before disabling a measurement or assuming offline tracking continues. The broadly useful habits are to choose a secure, comfortable fit, keep software current, and use connectivity or measurements in line with the data you actually want.
