Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor reliable alerts, change settings in this order: enable the specific open, close, or both-state event you need; allow the smart-home app to send notifications on your phone; then open and close the door while watching the sensor state in the app. If the state changes but no push arrives, troubleshoot app and phone permissions. If the state never changes, fix alignment, battery, pairing, or the hub/network path before changing notification preferences.
There is no universal menu or sensitivity value. Controls, radio protocols, hub requirements, and even the meaning of timing options depend on the exact sensor, app, and platform. The examples below show how to reason about those differences without treating one manufacturer’s instructions as a rule for every contact sensor.

Start with the event that should trigger an alert
Pairing a contact sensor does not necessarily turn on every phone alert. Open the sensor’s own settings and identify which condition you want reported:
- Open: notify when the magnet separates and the door opens.
- Close: notify when the contacts meet again.
- Both states: send an alert for opening and closing.
- Neither: useful for a sensor used only as an automation trigger, but it will not produce a phone notification.
Some apps also provide an open reminder, schedules, modes, or separate notification-delivery choices. Select the event that matches your use case instead of enabling every option. For example, an exterior door may need an immediate opening alert, while a cupboard sensor may need only an open reminder. The DOOR guide documents per-sensor open/close monitoring, an open reminder, and notification options; those controls are examples of what that product exposes, not a promise that every app has the same labels.

First diagnosis: did the app see the door change state?
Trigger a deliberate test before adjusting advanced settings. Keep the sensor’s status page visible, open the door fully, wait for the state to change, close it, and verify the return to the closed state. This separates two different failures that look identical in a notification banner: an event that never reaches the app and an event that reaches the app but is not pushed to the phone.
If the state changes but the phone is silent
The contact event and hub path are working well enough to update the app. Check the app’s in-app alert switch for that sensor, then check the phone’s notification permission for the relevant smart-home app. Operating-system labels vary, but the permission must allow notifications rather than merely allowing the app to run. Also check whether a mode, schedule, focus setting, or per-device mute is suppressing alerts. Do not move the magnet or change sensitivity until the app is receiving the state change; those changes address detection, not delivery.
If the state does not change
Investigate the physical installation, battery, pairing, and hub or network connection. An offline indicator, stale timestamp, or unchanged state means the app has not received a current contact event. DOOR’s instructions specifically recommend an open/close test and checking whether the hub is offline. A notification preference cannot repair a sensor that is not reporting.

Correct the sensor and magnet alignment
A contact sensor normally has a powered sensor body and a separate magnet. They must be close enough and aligned so the closed position is recognized, then separate cleanly when the door opens. Check the installation with the door in its real closed position—not held by hand—and look for a warped frame, a shifting adhesive pad, or a magnet that is mounted too far above or below the sensor.

Ring-specific spacing and placement
Ring’s Contact Sensor installation guidance says the sensor and magnet should be no more than 2.5 cm (1 inch) apart. That is a Ring instruction for its contact sensor, not a universal tolerance. Ring also recommends choosing the side of the door without hinges for placement. A different model may require a smaller gap, tolerate a different offset, or publish no numeric limit, so use the measurement in your own model’s guide rather than copying the Ring figure.
After remounting, repeat several open-and-close cycles. If only one direction is detected, the alignment is marginal or the magnet is not separating as expected. If the sensor reports open while the door is closed, check for a loose mount or excessive gap before changing software settings.
Use sensitivity and timing controls only when your model provides them
Some ecosystems expose a sensitivity range or a sleep-time control; many do not. These controls are model- and platform-specific, and a value that works on one door is not a reliability standard.

Aqara P2 example
Aqara documents adjustable sensitivity from 1–3 cm and an adjustable sleep-time setting for the P2 in Aqara Home. The 1–3 cm figure is the range offered by that product’s settings, not a measured alert-performance result. Change one value at a time, test repeated openings and closings, and keep the setting that matches the actual gap and event frequency of your door. Aqara also notes that app functions, including automation conditions, can vary by ecosystem when the sensor is used through Matter; a control visible in Aqara Home may not appear in another platform.
Do not raise sensitivity as a blanket fix
If the app never changes state, first correct alignment and connectivity. Sensitivity cannot compensate for a dead battery, an offline hub, or a magnet mounted outside the supported position. If the app changes state reliably but sends duplicate or unexpectedly delayed events, then a model-specific timing or sleep control may be relevant—provided the exact app documents it. The available product instructions do not establish one best sensitivity or sleep-time value for every installation.
Confirm the radio, hub, and network path
Smart contact sensors do not all communicate the same way. Before buying a replacement or blaming a notification setting, identify the sensor’s radio and the equipment that must relay its event.

|---|---|---|---|
| Aqara P2 | Matter over Thread. A Matter-enabled app needs both Matter-controller and Thread-border-router functions. | Aqara Home exposes 1–3 cm sensitivity and sleep-time controls; feature availability can vary by ecosystem. | No universal best sensitivity or reliability rate is stated. |
| Aqara standard Door and Window Sensor | Zigbee; the product page says an Aqara hub is required. | Placement guidance gives up to 400 inches (approximately 33 meters) to the Aqara hub. | The distance is manufacturer guidance, not a guaranteed real-world range; sensitivity controls are not stated for this model. |
| Ring Contact Sensor (2nd Generation) | Use the Ring Alarm installation instructions and its associated hub path for the exact setup. | Sensor-to-magnet spacing of no more than 2.5 cm (1 inch); hinge-side placement guidance; entry and exit delays for main doors are described in the installation guide. | The cited guide does not establish a cross-brand range or a universal delay setting. |
| DOOR sensors | Sensors report through a hub; the guide advises checking whether that hub is offline. | Open/close monitoring choices, an open reminder, notification options, chronological event history, and low-battery indication are documented. | Radio protocol and numeric spacing limits are not stated in the cited guide. |
For the Aqara P2, Aqara lists these tested two-in-one examples that combine Matter-controller and Thread-border-router functions: Apple TV 4K (2nd or 3rd generation, with 128 GB specified for the 3rd-generation model), HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, SmartThings Hub v3, Aeotec Hub v3, SmartThings Station, Echo (4th generation), Nest Hub (2nd generation), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wi-Fi Pro, and Home Assistant Yellow. Compatibility can change with firmware and platform updates, so verify the current support list for the exact sensor before purchase or setup.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check phone and app notification delivery
Once the app state changes correctly, inspect delivery in two places. First, open the sensor’s page and confirm its open, close, or both-state alert is enabled. Second, open the phone’s notification settings and confirm that the smart-home app is permitted to send alerts. If the app offers separate sound, banner, lock-screen, or critical-alert choices, select the level appropriate to the door’s purpose.
Test with the phone unlocked and the app in the background, then test again with the app closed. This reveals whether the failure is limited to a particular delivery mode. If event history records the opening while no push appears, the sensor and hub have done their jobs; continue with app, phone, and mode settings rather than remounting hardware.

Use history, battery, and offline indicators as evidence
Diagnostic information is more useful than repeatedly opening the door without observing the app. Where available, review the chronological event history for the exact time of your test. A recorded open followed by a close confirms that the sensor communicated, even if a push was suppressed. A low-battery warning points to a power problem that can cause missed or delayed reports. An offline status points to the hub, network, pairing, or battery path.
Replace or recharge the battery according to the model’s instructions, then perform a fresh open/close test. If the sensor remains offline, confirm that the hub is powered and connected, that the device is still paired, and that the sensor is within the manufacturer’s placement guidance. For the Aqara Zigbee model, the published 400-inch (approximately 33-meter) figure is guidance to the Aqara hub under the manufacturer’s placement instructions, not a guarantee through every wall or building layout.
Ring’s delay guidance is about alarm behavior, not every sensor
Ring’s official Ring Alarm (2nd Generation) Installation Guide states: "Main Doors have entry and exit delays to help prevent false alarms." This describes Ring Alarm placement and configuration for main doors. It should not be read as evidence that all contact sensors offer adjustable entry and exit delays, or that adding a delay will improve ordinary phone-notification reliability. If your exact model exposes a delay, verify whether it affects alarm arming, push timing, repeat-event suppression, or another function before changing it.
A practical decision path for a sensor that is not alerting
- Identify the intended event. Decide whether the required alert is open, close, both, or an open reminder, and enable that event in the sensor’s settings.
- Watch the app during a physical test. Open and close the door while checking for a state transition.
- Branch on the result. If the state changes, troubleshoot app and phone notification permissions. If it does not, inspect alignment, battery, pairing, and hub connectivity.
- Verify the installation. Confirm that the magnet and sensor align when closed and separate when open. Apply a numeric gap only when the maker specifies one, such as Ring’s 2.5 cm maximum.
- Verify the infrastructure. Match the product to its required hub or network path: Aqara P2 needs Matter-controller and Thread-border-router functions, while the standard Aqara Zigbee sensor requires an Aqara hub.
- Change advanced controls sparingly. Use sensitivity or sleep-time settings only when the exact model and app document them; Aqara P2’s 1–3 cm range is one product-specific example.
- Retest and inspect evidence. Confirm a new history entry, normal online status, and battery condition after each change.
What to verify before choosing a replacement sensor
Compare candidates on four practical axes rather than assuming that all contact sensors behave alike:
- Radio and hub: determine whether the device uses Zigbee with a brand hub or Matter over Thread with a controller and border router.
- Available controls: check for open/close notifications, sensitivity, sleep time, modes, and reminders in the app you actually plan to use.
- Physical fit: measure the door geometry, account for hinges and uneven frames, and confirm the maker’s alignment and spacing instructions.
- Diagnostics: prefer an app that exposes event history, battery status, online state, and a direct way to test the sensor.
Documentation for Aqara, Ring, and DOOR describes their respective products; it is not comparative testing and does not prove that one system is more reliable than another. The exact menu names, firmware features, and hub requirements for an unspecified sensor remain model- and platform-dependent.
