1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe most useful settings make bedtime predictable and remove avoidable interruptions: set a repeating bedtime and wake time, add a brief wind-down reminder if it helps, silence routine notifications with Sleep Focus or do-not-disturb, keep essential contacts as exceptions, and make the screen and audio stop drawing attention. These controls can shape a calmer environment, but the available product documentation does not show that any setting guarantees faster sleep or prevents later waking.
What sleep-app settings can—and cannot—do
Sleep apps are control panels for routines, alerts, screens, audio and tracking. They can reduce the number of decisions and disturbances around bedtime. They cannot guarantee that you will fall asleep quickly or stay asleep. The documentation reviewed for Apple Health, Sleep Focus, Sleep as Android and Sleep.com describes features and product behavior, not comparative clinical effectiveness.

Use the smallest set of controls that feels calming. A reminder that creates pressure, a bright display that invites checking, or an alarm that repeatedly interrupts the night can defeat the purpose of the app. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it genuinely helps your routine.

1. Make bedtime and wake-up time repeatable
Set a recurring schedule around real obligations
A regular schedule is the foundation because it turns sleep into a predictable event instead of a nightly negotiation. In Apple Health, open the Sleep section and configure recurring bedtimes and wake-up times. You can create more than one schedule when weekdays and weekends differ, and you can set a sleep goal. Choose times you can follow on ordinary days; an aspirational schedule that you regularly ignore is less useful than a realistic one.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
Check the schedule after travel, shift changes or daylight-saving changes. A schedule that is technically enabled but no longer matches your life can produce reminders at the wrong time and make the app feel disruptive.
Use wind-down as a cue, not a performance test
Apple documents a configurable wind-down period from 15 minutes to three hours. Start with a modest interval that leaves enough time to finish routine tasks and settle down. During wind-down, switch to low-effort activities, dim the display and silence routine alerts.
If the reminder makes you anxious about meeting a sleep target, shorten it or turn it off. The documentation does not identify a universally best wind-down length, and a longer period is not automatically better. The useful setting is the one that reliably prompts a quiet routine without adding stress.

2. Silence routine notifications while preserving urgent access
Schedule Sleep Focus or do-not-disturb
Notifications can wake you after you have fallen asleep or tempt you to check the phone during a brief awakening. Schedule Sleep Focus for the wind-down and sleep period, or use your sleep app’s equivalent do-not-disturb control. Apple’s Sleep Focus can filter calls and notifications; Sleep as Android documents automatic notification silencing during tracking.
Set the schedule to cover the whole period when interruptions are unwanted, not just the moment you intend to close your eyes. If you often go to bed early or late, use an automatic schedule only when it still matches your actual routine.

Review exceptions instead of blocking everyone
Silencing every contact may create a different kind of worry. In Sleep Focus, allow selected people or apps that must be able to reach you. Sleep as Android documents a priority mode for emergency contacts. Keep the exception list short and review it periodically; every additional exception is another possible interruption.
Test the arrangement during the day. Ask an allowed contact to call, and send a test notification from an app that should be blocked. Confirm that the behavior matches your safety needs before relying on it overnight.
3. Make the screen less interesting at night
Dim or switch off the display
A lit screen can become an invitation to read messages, open a browser or inspect a sleep score. Sleep as Android documents screen-dimming options during tracking. Use the dimmest setting that still lets you operate the phone safely, or choose a screen-off behavior when the app supports it.
Keep the phone on its bedside surface rather than in your hand. If you wake, avoid opening the app to inspect graphs or scores. The reviewed documentation describes display controls but does not establish a clinical effect from dimming, nor does it show that checking a score improves sleep.
Separate the alarm from nighttime checking
Configure the alarm before you lie down, then leave the phone alone. If you need to know the time, use the least interactive option available, such as a brief glance at a dim clock, rather than unlocking the phone and entering an app. Disable lock-screen previews for nonessential notifications so an unexpected message does not become a reading session.

4. Use sleep audio only when it is genuinely soothing
Choose a gentle sound and an endpoint
Sleep as Android offers lullabies that can include melodies, audiobooks or white noise. If a familiar, quiet sound helps you settle, select one track and set a fade or timer where available. Its documentation says lullaby playback can fade when the app detects sleep.

A sound that is too loud, changes abruptly or contains words you want to follow can keep your attention active. If audio feels distracting, disable it; there is no evidence in the reviewed material that any particular sound works for everyone or prevents later waking.
Prevent audio from becoming a new interruption
Check what happens when the track ends, when the app loses permission to run, and when another app plays sound. Use a fade rather than an abrupt stop when the option exists. Before bedtime, verify that the phone is not connected to a speaker that may announce messages or battery warnings.
5. Configure tracking without creating a checking habit
Apple Watch and Apple Health requirements
Apple says Apple Watch can estimate time in sleep stages and when you might have woken. Tracking must be enabled, and the watch must be worn overnight. Apple’s support guidance says to charge the watch to at least 30% before bed. Charge it early enough that you are not handling a bright screen at bedtime.
In Apple Health’s Sleep settings, configure the alarm’s sound, volume, vibration and snooze behavior. Choose an alarm you can reliably hear or feel, and avoid repeated snoozes if they fragment your morning. Treat stage and awakening estimates as approximations, not as a reason to wake yourself to inspect the phone.

Understand phone-based tracking constraints
Tracking features may impose conditions that matter more than the displayed score. A phone might need to remain on a particular surface, stay connected to power or keep the tracking session active. If those requirements make your routine awkward, tracking is optional; the schedule, notification and display controls can work without collecting a score.
Sleep as Android: screen and automatic silencing
Sleep as Android documents automatic notification silencing during tracking, priority access for emergency contacts and display-dimming choices. Start tracking only when you are ready for bed, and confirm that the app’s tracking mode is active before putting the phone down. If the app offers a sleep-detection fade for audio, check that it is enabled rather than allowing sound to continue indefinitely.
Sleep.com sonar behavior
Sleep.com documents a vendor-specific sonar mode. Start a tracking session when ready for bed and stop it on waking. Sonar pauses if the phone is moved from its bedside surface or if another app plays sounds; it resumes after the phone returns to a level surface and no other app is playing sound. This is not a general rule for sleep apps. Keep the phone in the documented position and avoid playing other audio if continuous tracking matters.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the smallest useful combination
| Setting area | What to look for | Trade-off or requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Interruption control | Sleep Focus or do-not-disturb that silences routine calls and notifications while allowing chosen people or apps | Too many exceptions can recreate interruptions; emergency access must remain workable |
| Bedtime support | Recurring bedtimes, wake-up times, sleep goal and an optional wind-down cue | A schedule must match real obligations; the best wind-down length is not established |
| Audio control | Fade or timer, with a sound you find calming | Audio may distract some people; documentation does not prove a universal benefit |
| Screen control | Dimming or screen-off behavior during tracking | Controls reduce opportunities to check, but a clinical effect is not established |
| Tracking burden | Requirements you can follow, such as a charged wearable or a phone kept on a surface | More data can mean more setup and more temptation to inspect results |
Start with schedule, notification silence and display control. Add audio or tracking only if each one makes bedtime easier rather than more complicated.
Practical setup recipes
If you want a quiet, low-maintenance night
- Set a recurring bedtime and wake-up time that fits your normal week.
- Add a short wind-down reminder, or leave it off if reminders feel pressuring.
- Schedule Sleep Focus or do-not-disturb across wind-down and sleep.
- Allow only the people or apps that genuinely need to reach you.
- Dim or turn off the display, set the morning alarm and stop interacting with the phone.
If you wake and immediately check the phone
- Enable the strongest available screen-dimming or screen-off option during tracking.
- Hide nonessential lock-screen previews.
- Keep sleep scores and graphs closed; review them only during the day, if at all.
- Use a fade or timer for audio so it does not continue as a reason to listen.
If someone must be able to reach you
- Turn on Sleep Focus or do-not-disturb rather than leaving all notifications active.
- Add the specific people or apps that need priority access.
- Test an allowed call and a blocked notification before bedtime.
- Keep the exception list stable so you know what will happen overnight.
Troubleshooting common failures
The reminder arrives at the wrong time
Check for multiple schedules, a changed time zone or a wake-up time that was edited for only one day. Remove obsolete schedules and confirm the active days. If the reminder itself is stressful, shorten the wind-down period or disable the alert while keeping the recurring sleep schedule.
Best Value
Notifications still wake you
Look for contacts or apps listed as allowed, repeated-call rules and alarms that are intentionally permitted. Confirm that Sleep Focus or tracking actually starts; a schedule that was turned off for one night will not silence anything. Test the configuration while awake.
Audio keeps playing or wakes you
Verify the fade or timer, reduce volume and check whether another device is receiving the audio. If sleep detection does not trigger the fade reliably, use a fixed timer or disable audio rather than tolerating interruptions.
Tracking stops or looks incomplete
For wearable tracking, check that the watch was worn overnight and had at least 30% charge before bed. For phone-based modes, keep the phone on the required surface, avoid moving it and prevent other apps from playing sounds. In Sleep.com’s sonar mode, movement or other app audio specifically pauses tracking until the documented conditions return.

Turn off score notifications and stop opening graphs during the night. Tracking is optional, and an estimate of stages or awakenings is not a command to change your bedtime in the moment. Keep only the controls that make the routine calmer.
When app settings are not enough
Persistent difficulty falling asleep, repeated awakenings or distress about sleep deserves attention beyond app configuration. App documentation cannot determine the cause or provide an individualized treatment plan. If the problem continues, discuss it with a qualified healthcare professional; take notes during the day rather than repeatedly checking the phone overnight.
No setting in the reviewed documentation is established to prevent later waking. The practical goal is narrower: create a predictable schedule, remove avoidable interruptions and make the phone quiet and uninteresting until morning.
