Put the mic about 6–12 inches from your mouth, record or monitor a short sample, then change only the setting that addresses a problem you can hear. The available controls differ between the original MV6 and MV6 Gen 2, so check which model you have before following model-specific advice.
How do I change MV6 mic settings?
- Connect the MV6 to your computer by USB-C and choose it as the audio input in your operating system or recording, calling, or streaming app. Shure says the Gen 2’s USB setup does not require an external audio interface.
- Open Shure MOTIV Mix, select the MV6 under Sources, and open its settings using the gear icon.
- Check the model name and the controls shown. The original MV6 and MV6 Gen 2 do not have identical feature sets; available app options can also depend on app and firmware revisions.
- Position the mic about 6–12 inches from your mouth. Shure’s MOTIV Mix guide recommends this distance to help avoid room reflections and reverberation. Speak at your normal level, then try a louder phrase while monitoring.
- Begin with the speech processing enabled. Change one setting at a time, record or monitor another sample, and keep the change only if it improves the sound for your setup.
For original-model control descriptions, see Shure’s MV6 User Guide and MOTIV Mix User Guide. Gen 2 features and compatibility notes are on Shure’s MV6 Gen 2 product page.

Should I use Auto Level on the MV6?
For ordinary conversation, Auto Level is a sensible starting point. Shure describes it as automatically adjusting gain in response to speaking distance and volume, and lists it as the original MV6’s default. That can be convenient when your voice varies between quiet speech and emphatic phrases.
Choose Manual mode if you want direct control or need a steadier level for a consistent recording setup. Speak at your usual distance and loudness while setting the slider, then check the meters or a recording for clipping. There is no single gain number established as right for every voice, distance, and room.

- PERSONALIZE YOUR SOUND: Adjustable Auto Level Mode lets you set your own gain response, so you stay balanced whether you're speaking softly or celebrating on stream, while 5-band EQ lets you shape your tone in games.
Gen 2 has additional Auto Level options for gain targets and response times. Those controls are specific to Gen 2; do not expect them in the original MV6’s control set.
How should I set denoising, plosive control, and tone?
Real-time Denoiser: use it for steady background noise
Turn on Real-time Denoiser when persistent sounds such as a computer fan, HVAC, or traffic are audible in your mic signal. Shure describes it as reducing constant environmental noise. Compare a short recording or monitored sample with processing on and off: use enough denoising to address the unwanted sound without assuming one setting suits every room. The original MV6 guide documents a toggle; Shure describes adjustable denoising on Gen 2.

Digital Popper Stopper: keep it on for speech
Shure says Digital Popper Stopper detects and reduces plosive bursts such as “p” and “b.” It is a useful speech setting, but it does not make extreme close-miking necessary. Keep a sensible mouth-to-mic distance and listen for plosives in a test recording.
Tone and high-pass filter: adjust only for a clear reason
The original MV6 offers Dark, Natural, and Bright tone choices. Start with Natural, then compare the alternatives by listening; the names describe tonal options, not a quality ranking. Its high-pass filter offers 75 Hz and 150 Hz settings to reduce low-frequency rumble. A cautious approach is to leave it off unless rumble is a problem, then try 75 Hz first. Try 150 Hz only if it reduces the noise without making your voice sound too thin. These are practical starting suggestions, not Shure-prescribed voice recipes.

Gen 2 also lists a 5-band EQ. That feature is not part of the original MV6 control set, and there is no universal set of EQ changes established for every speaker.
What do Monitor Mix and mute change?
Monitor Mix adjusts the balance between your microphone and computer playback in headphones connected to the MV6’s 3.5 mm output. Use it to make local monitoring comfortable; it does not change the microphone’s captured gain or recording level. You can mute the microphone in the app or use its tap-to-mute control.

Which settings should I use for podcasts, calls, and gaming?
Podcast recording
Select the MV6 as the recording app’s input, place it about 6–12 inches from the speaker, and make a short test with the speech processing enabled. Switch to Manual gain only if you need more direct level control, and check the result for clipping. For a two-person setup, Shure says MOTIV Mix can manage up to five audio channels; each speaker still needs sensible mic placement.
Calls and video meetings
Choose the MV6 as the input in both the system settings and the calling app if the app has its own device selector. Keep the speech-oriented processing as a starting point, and enable denoising if steady room noise is being transmitted. Headphones and Monitor Mix can help you hear your own mic, but that balance does not alter what the app records or sends.
