After a major ColorOS upgrade, verify the settings that affect privacy, notifications, battery use, security and everyday controls instead of assuming the update reset (or preserved) anything. First note your exact ColorOS version and OPPO handset model; feature names and rollout timing can differ by model, region, carrier and software version.
Work through the checks below, testing each change on your own phone. If a path does not match, use the Settings search field and then consult support material for your model and region.

Start by recording the phone and software version
Open Settings and look for About device (the label can vary) to record the model name, ColorOS version and Android version. Keep those details if you need to ask for help. OPPO’s ColorOS 15 rollout information is explicitly approximate: availability and timing depend on the device, country or region and carrier. A menu shown for one model or an earlier release is not a universal map for every OPPO phone.

Let the update finish its post-install work before judging battery life or performance. Keep the phone on power and Wi-Fi for a while, allow apps to update, and restart once if the interface appears incomplete. Do not treat a temporary indexing or app-update period as proof that a setting was lost.

Check app permissions and privacy controls
Permissions are the first safety check because an update can change an app, introduce a new permission prompt or present the same control under a different label. Review only the apps that matter to you, rather than granting every request again.
Use the ColorOS 14 app-by-app path
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then App Management.
- Select an app and tap Permissions.
- Inspect access to the camera, microphone, location, and photos or videos. Where offered, choose the least access that still supports the app, including Ask every time for a listed permission.
That route is documented in OPPO’s ColorOS 14 guidance and may be named differently on another version or model. If you cannot find it, search Settings for “permissions,” the app name, or “camera access.”
Check the system-wide privacy switches
Some ColorOS releases provide quick microphone and camera toggles or a Privacy Dashboard. ColorOS 12 documentation uses those names, while ColorOS 14 guidance emphasizes the per-app route above. Treat both as version-specific examples, not controls that must appear together. Turn a system-wide camera or microphone switch off only when you intend to block every app, then test a trusted call or camera app after changing it.

Review photos and videos separately
Photo access may be full, selected-item, or denied, depending on the app and software version. Open an app that uploads media and test selecting one new image. If the picker shows only selected items, that may be the privacy behavior you want; do not broaden access merely because an older instruction expects a full library.

Verify notifications and background activity
Test messages, calendar reminders and other time-sensitive apps rather than relying on a notification preview. In ColorOS 14, OPPO places notification management under Settings > Apps > App management; the exact route can differ.
Check each important app
- Confirm the app’s notifications are allowed.
- Check alert style, sound or vibration, badges and whether alerts appear on the lock screen.
- Review any privacy option that hides notification content while the phone is locked.
- Send yourself a test message or reminder while the screen is off, then unlock the phone and verify the result.
If an alert arrives only after opening the app, inspect its battery and background permissions before reinstalling it. A power-saving restriction can stop background sync even when notifications appear enabled. Change one control at a time and repeat the screen-off test.
Review battery, charging and per-app limits
Open Settings > Battery and record which controls are present. Common options include Power saving mode and Smart charging, but OPPO does not state that every model has the same choices or that all users should enable or disable them.

- Open the battery-use or app-battery screen and identify unusually high drain.
- For an app that must sync, navigate to its battery-management control and check whether background activity is restricted.
- Change the restriction only if you understand the effect, then test syncing and notifications.
- Use Power saving mode deliberately when you need longer runtime; verify which functions it limits on your model.
Do not broadly remove background activity or force every app into the same mode. Messaging, navigation, health and authenticator apps often need different treatment. Smart charging can reduce time spent at a high charge level, but its schedule and availability are model-specific; confirm that it suits your charging routine.

Confirm lock-screen and theft-protection behavior
Lock the phone and test the behavior you rely on: fingerprint or face unlock, the PIN fallback, lock-screen notifications, quick settings and emergency information. Check whether sensitive notification text is visible to someone who picks up the locked device.
Consider the theft detection lock when available
OPPO’s ColorOS 15 material describes a theft detection lock in these terms: “The theft detection lock feature ensures that the screen will lock if this setting detects that someone has taken your device and run away.” The same page cautions that results vary by situation, the feature cannot guarantee 100% effectiveness, and you must enable it. If the option appears in your security settings, read its description, enable it intentionally, and retain a strong PIN or password as the fallback.
Re-test connectivity instead of assuming radio settings survived
Walk through the connections you use every day. Turn Wi-Fi off and on, reconnect to your normal network, place a call, send an SMS if your plan uses it, and test mobile data. Pair a frequently used Bluetooth accessory and verify that Android Auto or another vehicle connection still starts if relevant. Check whether a preferred SIM for calls, messages or data changed on a dual-SIM phone.

Check display, lock-screen and home-screen preferences
Open the display and personalization areas and inspect only the choices that affect your routine: brightness or auto-brightness, refresh-rate mode, dark or light theme, screen timeout, accidental-touch protection, always-on display, wallpaper and icon layout. Lock and unlock the phone to confirm the timeout and always-on behavior.
Verify that navigation mode, gesture sensitivity and home-screen layout still work as expected. If a major update introduces a new panel or widget, remove it only after confirming it is not needed for a security or accessibility shortcut. OPPO’s documentation does not establish that any of these preferences reset on every upgrade, so test rather than rebuild the entire home screen pre-emptively.

Play a ringtone, media clip and alarm preview. Check media, ring, notification and alarm volumes independently, along with vibration intensity, Do Not Disturb schedules and audio routing to Bluetooth devices. A phone can appear silent because a schedule or connected accessory is active even when volume sliders look normal.
In accessibility settings, test magnification, TalkBack or another screen reader, colour correction, font and display size, hearing-device support and interaction controls if you use them. Confirm that the accessibility shortcut remains reachable from the method you selected. These options are highly personal; the right post-update action is verification, not disabling them.
Confirm default apps and app links
Open a web link, an email attachment, a map address and a video file to see which apps handle them. If the system asks for a default, choose the app you intend to use and check whether an “open supported links” setting changed. Repeat with the dialer, messaging app and digital assistant if those defaults matter to you.
Also inspect work-profile, parental-control or cloned-app settings where applicable. A major update may change an app’s compatibility without changing the system default, so update the affected app before replacing it or clearing its data.
Look at storage and performance with realistic expectations
Check Settings for storage usage and compare the categories with your own records. OPPO product material for ColorOS 14 reports up to 21 GB of ROM Vitalization on a 256 GB test model, measured by OPPO Labs in 2023/2024 material. OPPO warns that the result varies by model and conditions. It is not a guaranteed amount of free space on your phone and should not be used as a reason to delete files or reset the device.
After apps finish updating, open the apps you use most and watch for crashes, missing files or unusual heat. Clear only temporary caches when an app’s own troubleshooting guidance calls for it; avoid deleting app data unless you have a backup and understand that it can sign you out or remove offline content.
When a menu or option is missing
- Confirm the ColorOS and handset model you recorded at the start.
- Use the Settings search box with the feature name, such as “smart charging,” “notification,” “camera access” or “default apps.”
- Check whether the phone is carrier-branded or using a regional software build.
- Read the support instructions for that exact model and region; do not apply a ColorOS 12 or ColorOS 14 path as if it were universal.
- If a setting is present but behaves incorrectly, note the app, software version, steps to reproduce and whether the problem occurs on Wi-Fi, mobile data or both before contacting support.
OPPO’s product pages describe feature availability as dependent on model, region, carrier and software version. A missing menu can therefore be an availability difference rather than a failed update.
A practical final-pass checklist
- Version, model and Android details are recorded.
- Camera, microphone, location and photo/video permissions match your choices.
- Important notifications appear with the lock-screen privacy you expect.
- Battery use, Power saving mode, Smart charging and app background limits are intentional.
- Unlocking, lock-screen controls and any theft-protection option have been tested.
- Wi-Fi, mobile data, calls, SMS, Bluetooth and SIM preferences work.
- Display, home screen, sound, Do Not Disturb and accessibility behave normally.
- Default apps and supported links open in the applications you choose.
- Storage and performance observations account for post-update app activity rather than assuming a permanent fault.
This approach catches the settings that can affect privacy and daily use while avoiding a blanket reset or unsafe recommendation to loosen security and battery controls. Verify the options your phone actually exposes, test the behaviors that matter to you, and use model-specific documentation whenever the labels differ.
