Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor the Google Gemini API, change three controls first: image_size for detail and image-output cost, aspect_ratio for the destination canvas, and generation_config.thinking_level for prompt handling and latency. Start at 1K, use the ratio your layout needs, and leave thinking at medium unless a simple draft can use minimal or a constraint-heavy composition justifies high. These controls are API settings; Gemini Apps exposes a different, plan-based workflow.
The three settings that matter most
Nano Banana 2.1’s documented API controls separate three decisions that are often confused:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
image_size: selects 1K, 2K, or 4K output. It is the clearest per-image output-cost lever.aspect_ratio: selects the canvas shape, so the generated image fits a post, slide, banner, story, or square placement without an avoidable crop.generation_config.thinking_level: selects minimal, medium, or high reasoning. Google describes it as a quality-versus-latency control; medium is the default.
Google’s Nano Banana 2.1 model reference lists the stable model and its October 6, 2026 update. The image-generation guide shows these fields in the image response and generation configuration. The documentation does not provide a universal number of seconds saved or a guaranteed quality score for any setting, so the recommendations below are workflow guidance rather than benchmark results.

The named parameters in this article belong to the developer API. In an API request, you explicitly send output size and aspect ratio and set the thinking level in generation configuration. Gemini Apps is a chat interface with its own model and plan controls; it does not present a panel where you type API parameter names.

Google’s Gemini Apps help page says downloads are 2K with a Google AI plan and 1K without one. The available model, plan, region, and interface can change, so confirm the options shown in your account. Google’s Nano Banana overview describes the consumer image workflow, while the API documentation covers programmable controls and usage billing.
Choose image size from the final deliverable
The API supports three output tiers, with 1K as the documented default. Size changes the available detail and crop headroom, but a larger file is not automatically a better choice for a small on-screen placement.
| Requested output | Standard image-output charge | Batch image-output charge | Best starting use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1K | $0.0336 per image | $0.0168 per image | Drafts, routine web graphics, quick iterations |
| 2K | $0.0504 per image | $0.0252 per image | Final web assets, moderate crops, larger displays |
| 4K | $0.113 per image | $0.0567 per image | Print preparation, substantial crop headroom, very large displays |
These are the image-output components in Google’s 2026 pricing table, checked October 13, 2026; they are not necessarily the total request price. Input tokens, text output, thinking tokens for applicable thinking models, and optional grounding can be billed separately. Verify the current pricing table before forecasting spend because prices and included allowances can change.
A practical size workflow
- Draft at 1K. Check subject placement, proportions, lighting, and lettering before paying for a larger render.
- Move to 2K when the destination needs it. Use it for a final image that will be displayed larger or cropped moderately.
- Use 4K selectively. Choose it when the downstream layout, print preparation, or crop requires extra pixels. Do not assume 4K will add visible value to a small thumbnail.
Generate the composition at the target ratio before increasing size. A high-resolution image with the wrong canvas can still lose important content in a later crop.
Set thinking level according to prompt complexity
Nano Banana 2.1 documents three values: minimal, medium (the default), and high. Google says the control balances quality and latency, and its pricing documentation notes that thinking tokens are billed for thinking models.

| Thinking level | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Minimal | Simple prompts, rapid concept loops, or large batches where response time matters | Less reasoning budget for layered instructions; no fixed quality or speed guarantee is published |
| Medium | Ordinary generation and editing with several requirements | Default balance of instruction handling and latency |
| High | Multiple constraints, complex layouts, or edits where prompt adherence matters more than turnaround | May increase latency and billed thinking tokens; Google does not publish a universal time increase |
Use minimal for a rough thumbnail or a straightforward subject description. Keep medium for most production prompts. Try high when the prompt combines exact text, several subjects, a specified style, and strict spatial relationships. Treat these as starting choices, not guarantees that high will always improve an image or that minimal will always be faster by a fixed amount.
Match the aspect ratio to the placement
Send aspect_ratio in the image response configuration. The API supports square, portrait, landscape, and panoramic formats. If there is no input image determining a size, the documented default is square.
Choose the canvas before writing the prompt
- Square: square feeds, avatars, product tiles, and icon-like compositions.
- Portrait: stories, phone screens, posters, and tall social placements.
- Landscape: presentation slides, article headers, and video thumbnails.
- Panoramic: very wide banners where the layout genuinely needs a long horizontal or vertical canvas.
The model reference specifically notes that tiling artifacts were fixed for 1:4, 4:1, 1:8, and 8:1 panoramic ratios at 2K and 4K. That is a statement about those documented configurations, not a promise that every subject will be distributed perfectly across a wide frame. Tell the prompt where the subject should sit and reserve negative space for copy.
What an API configuration looks like
The relevant fields can be represented together conceptually as follows. Use the request structure shown in Google’s current SDK or REST example for your programming language; the values below are the settings to change.
{"response_format": {"image_size": "2K", "aspect_ratio": "16:9"}, "generation_config": {"thinking_level": "medium"}}
Change one variable at a time while diagnosing a result. If composition is wrong, change the ratio or prompt before jumping to 4K. If the request is slow and uncomplicated, lower thinking to minimal. If the image is correctly composed but lacks usable detail at its final display size, raise image size.

Use reference images deliberately
Nano Banana 2.1 supports up to 14 reference images. Google describes support for character consistency with up to four characters and high-fidelity representation of up to ten objects. These are documented capability limits, not a guarantee of exact preservation in every generation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Assign every reference a job
- Use a character reference for identity, clothing, or facial features.
- Use an object reference for product shape, markings, or materials.
- Use a pose or scene reference when the composition must follow a particular arrangement.
- Use a style reference only when the visual treatment, rather than the object itself, is what you need to carry over.
Explain each image’s role in the prompt instead of uploading a collection with no priorities. Too many competing references can make it harder to tell the model which details are essential. If a sequence requires several edits, keep the same identity and object references available and describe what must remain unchanged in each turn.
Handle text and grounding as separate workflow choices
Text-heavy graphics
Specify the exact copy, language, hierarchy, alignment, and location. Google highlights improved text rendering but does not guarantee typo-free lettering. For a sign, label, chart, or poster, inspect every character at the intended display size. Google’s guidance says it can work better to generate the text first and then request an image containing that text; this is useful when wording is more important than visual improvisation.
All generated images include SynthID watermarking. Account for that provenance signal in a publishing workflow rather than assuming the file is an unmarked original.
Web and Image Search grounding
Nano Banana 2.1 can use Web Search and Image Search grounding to supply current information as visual context. Grounding is not free context: the pricing page says a request may produce one or more Google Search queries and that grounding is charged separately after applicable included requests. Check the billing details before enabling it for a high-volume pipeline.

Google also says web-search grounding does not currently support using real-world images of people from web search. If a prompt requires a specific person, provide an appropriate reference image and follow your organization’s consent and rights procedures instead of assuming search grounding will supply it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan cost with Standard or Batch execution
Standard responses suit interactive iteration, where you need to inspect an image and revise the prompt immediately. Batch can be appropriate for non-interactive volume jobs: Google lists lower image-output charges and says Batch offers higher rate limits with turnaround of up to 24 hours.
- Choose Standard when a person is watching the result, testing prompts, or fixing a composition in several turns.
- Choose Batch when requests can wait and the lower listed image-output component matters more than immediate feedback.
- Budget input, text, thinking, and grounding charges in addition to the image-output number in the table.
- Log the requested size, ratio, thinking level, and token usage so a cost increase has an identifiable cause.
A repeatable quality, speed, and cost procedure
- Define the placement. Write down the final pixel dimensions or the required shape. Select the matching aspect ratio first.
- Make a 1K draft. Use medium thinking unless the prompt is genuinely simple and speed-sensitive.
- Inspect structure. Check faces, hands, object geometry, perspective, negative space, and any lettering before changing resolution.
- Reduce or increase thinking deliberately. Use minimal for uncomplicated iterations; use high only when the prompt has interacting constraints or needs careful adherence.
- Correct the prompt and references. State subject positions, what must remain unchanged, and the role of each reference image.
- Render the final size. Move to 2K or 4K only when display, crop, or print requirements justify the additional image-output charge.
- Choose execution mode. Keep interactive revisions on Standard; queue accepted, repeatable jobs in Batch if up-to-24-hour turnaround is acceptable.
- Review the final file. Read all text, verify the crop at publication size, and record the settings and usage for future estimates.
Troubleshoot by symptom instead of raising every setting
The image is sharp enough but framed incorrectly
Change aspect_ratio and describe the subject’s position and the empty area needed for text. Raising 4K will not repair a composition that was generated on the wrong canvas.
The prompt contains many requirements and some are ignored
Keep the ratio and size appropriate, then try medium or high thinking. Rewrite the prompt with an ordered list of must-have constraints and identify which reference controls identity, object form, or style.
Recommended Free Tools
Generation is too slow for ideation
Use 1K and minimal thinking for simple drafts. Reserve high thinking and larger output for the selected final rather than every exploratory attempt.
Best Value
The final crop lacks detail
Keep the same ratio if the composition is correct and render at 2K or 4K. If the crop itself cuts off the subject, regenerate with more negative space instead of relying on resolution.
Lettering contains errors
Put the exact text, capitalization, language, and placement in the prompt; consider the text-first workflow; then proofread the rendered image. Higher resolution does not guarantee correct spelling.
The bill is higher than the image table suggests
The table covers image-output components only. Review input and text tokens, billed thinking tokens, grounding queries, request mode, and the number of retries. A 4K retry after several 1K drafts can materially change the total.

Google describes Nano Banana 2.1 as a high-efficiency workhorse and says the update maintains Flash-level speed and cost efficiency while improving visual quality, prompt adherence, multi-turn character consistency, and text rendering. Those are Google’s product descriptions, not independent side-by-side measurements.
Google positions Nano Banana 2 Lite as its fastest and cheapest option, but says it is not optimized for multiple reference inputs or sequential editing. It positions Nano Banana Pro as a premium option for complex visual tasks. Select among them based on the workflow you actually need, and do not treat those labels as a substitute for a controlled test of your own prompts.
The February 26, 2026 announcement about the earlier Nano Banana 2 generation is historical context; the current stable model reference is the authoritative place to check Nano Banana 2.1’s version and capabilities.
Quick Recap
A compact decision table
| Your constraint | Start with | Change when |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest practical draft cost | 1K, minimal thinking, Standard | Move to medium when prompt adherence is insufficient |
| Normal production image | 1K or 2K, medium thinking, matching ratio | Use 2K when display size or crop requires it |
| Complex composition | Matching ratio, medium or high thinking | Use high only if interacting constraints justify added latency and thinking cost |
| Large crop or print-oriented output | 2K or 4K, matching ratio | Use 4K when the downstream pixels are actually needed |
| Large non-interactive queue | Batch with the smallest acceptable size | Use Standard if waiting up to 24 hours is unacceptable |
