Treat HDR, windowed-game optimization, Dynamic Refresh Rate and dGPU-only modes as optional, model-dependent features rather than universal “best” switches.
1. Complete Windows and manufacturer updates first
A new laptop may have updates waiting even if Windows finished its initial setup. Install them before judging performance or changing advanced graphics options. Windows updates can include display, chipset and power-management components; the laptop maker’s channel is the safer place to obtain firmware and model-specific drivers.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Use the two supported update paths
- Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install everything offered, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Open the manufacturer’s support or system utility and apply its recommended driver, firmware and system updates. ASUS, for example, directs users to Windows Update and MyASUS for system and driver updates in its gaming guidance: ASUS Support’s Windows gaming optimization guide.
Do not substitute a generic “driver updater” for the maker’s instructions. Firmware packages and graphics-switching drivers are tied to a particular model, display wiring and cooling design. Keep the AC adapter connected during firmware work, close running applications, and do not interrupt a restart.

2. Identify the laptop’s control utility and performance modes
Gaming laptops commonly expose fan, power-limit and graphics controls through a vendor utility or keyboard shortcut. The labels are not standardized, so first locate the application listed in your model’s manual or support page. A mode that is safe and useful on one family may not exist—or may behave differently—on another.
What the profiles usually change
- Quiet or Silent: lower power and fan behavior for less noise, generally at the expense of sustained game performance.
- Balanced or Windows: an everyday compromise between speed, acoustics and energy use.
- Performance or Turbo: higher CPU/GPU power limits and more aggressive cooling for plugged-in gaming; expect more fan noise and heat.
- Manual: user-defined fan or power controls where the model supports them. Change these only when the manufacturer documents the controls.
ASUS describes Windows, Silent, Performance, Turbo and Manual modes, with differences in CPU/GPU performance, cooling, noise reduction and energy saving. Its recommendation to use Turbo for gaming is specific to compatible ASUS systems, not a universal rule: ASUS Support.
Lenovo’s Legion documentation uses Quiet, Balance and Performance. It says Performance has the highest power limits and is intended for games, particularly demanding action games, on the documented Legion family: Lenovo Legion user guide. Your model may offer fewer modes, different names or a different shortcut.
Choose the profile by situation
| Use case | Starting profile | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Plugged-in, demanding game | Manufacturer Performance/Turbo, if supported | Fan noise, surface temperature and the laptop’s own thermal warnings |
| Plugged-in, light game or office work | Balanced/Windows | Whether frame rates remain stable without unnecessary noise |
| Unplugged browsing or documents | Quiet/Balanced or the maker’s battery profile | Battery runtime and whether the display or graphics mode changes automatically |
3. Plug in before selecting gaming power settings
Use the included AC adapter when you want the laptop’s full gaming performance. Battery operation often imposes lower power limits, and some systems change graphics behavior when unplugged.
Set Windows power mode for each power state
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, choose Best performance while plugged in for a demanding game.
- When running on battery, use Balanced or Best power efficiency unless you specifically need maximum speed.
Microsoft defines Best performance as maximizing performance, Balanced as trading performance for energy use, and Best power efficiency as prioritizing runtime: Microsoft’s power-mode guide. The Windows choice and the manufacturer utility can both influence behavior, so use the vendor profile as the primary control when the two offer overlapping options.

Leaving the highest-power setting enabled all day is rarely worthwhile. It can increase fan noise and energy consumption during tasks that do not need it. A practical setup is a performance profile for AC gaming and a quieter, balanced profile for ordinary work.
4. Verify the panel refresh rate
Do not assume a laptop is using the refresh rate printed on its specifications sheet. Windows exposes only rates supported by the installed panel and current graphics path.
Check the rate Windows is actually using
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Select the laptop’s built-in display if more than one screen is listed.
- Under the refresh-rate control, choose a rate that Windows lists for that panel.
Higher refresh rates can make motion and input feel smoother when the game produces enough frames. Lower rates can reduce display power use. Microsoft explains both the supported-rate limitation and the battery trade-off here: Microsoft’s refresh-rate guide.
Use Dynamic Refresh Rate carefully
Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) can vary the rate to balance smoothness and battery life, but it is hardware-dependent. Microsoft warns that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games. If a game appears capped or less smooth after enabling DRR, turn it off temporarily, retest, and keep the setting that works for that display and game.
5. Assign each demanding game to the right GPU
Many gaming laptops contain an integrated GPU for efficiency and a discrete GPU for heavier graphics work. ASUS states that, when a device has discrete graphics, the dGPU provides better graphics performance than the integrated GPU; that statement applies only to laptops equipped with both types.

Set a per-game Windows preference
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Find the game in the app list. If it is absent, use Browse to select the game’s executable file.
- Select the game, choose Options, select High performance, and save.
- Restart the game so it creates a new graphics session with the chosen preference.
Windows’ per-app preference can take precedence over a graphics-vendor control-panel preference for some applications, so check Windows first when a game launches on the wrong adapter. ASUS documents this interaction and per-game assignment in its support guide: ASUS Support.
Understand Hybrid, dGPU and iGPU-only modes
A vendor utility may offer a system-wide graphics mode in addition to Windows’ per-game choice. Lenovo describes Hybrid mode as dynamically switching graphics to balance performance and power, while dGPU mode routes graphics-related tasks to the discrete GPU. On the documented Legion model, changing to dGPU mode requires a restart. Lenovo also presents Hybrid-iGPU Only for casual browsing and word processing: Lenovo Legion user guide.
Use Hybrid for a convenient everyday setup, dGPU mode when a particular game or external-display arrangement benefits from it, and iGPU-only mode only when battery life is more important than gaming speed. The exact names, restart requirements and display features vary by model; follow that laptop’s manual rather than forcing a mode through unsupported software.
6. Decide whether to enable windowed-game optimization
Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft says it targets DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-window mode. It can reduce frame latency and enable modern features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays.
Enable and test it per system
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Enable Optimizations for windowed games if the switch is available.
- Restart the game before evaluating the result.
This is not a guaranteed improvement for every title. Exclusive full-screen games, APIs outside the documented DirectX 10/11 scope and displays without the required features will not receive the same benefits. If a title develops stutter or a capture workflow behaves differently, disable the option for that game or system and compare.

Microsoft’s feature details and compatibility conditions are listed at Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Treat HDR as a display-and-game choice, not a performance preset
HDR can improve highlights, contrast and color when the laptop panel and the game both implement it well. It can also look flat, overly dark or inaccurate on a display with limited HDR capability. Open Settings > System > Display > HDR to see whether Windows recognizes HDR support, then enable it only when the result in the game is preferable.
Windows may disable HDR on battery because HDR use can reduce runtime. That behavior makes HDR a poor default for an unplugged battery profile. Microsoft’s HDR documentation covers supported displays, Windows controls and the battery implication: Microsoft’s HDR settings guide.
8. Build a separate battery profile
A gaming laptop should not use one configuration for every task. For browsing, video, documents and travel, lower the refresh rate when practical, select Balanced or Best power efficiency in Windows, and use Hybrid or integrated-graphics operation if the manufacturer supports it. These changes reduce the work the display and discrete GPU must do without altering the machine’s hardware.

Common setup mistakes and their fixes
The game is slower than expected while plugged in
Confirm that the included adapter is connected, Windows is not in Best power efficiency, and the maker utility is not in Quiet/Silent mode. Then inspect the game’s Graphics preference and restart the title after selecting High performance.
The game is stuck at an unexpectedly low frame rate
Check Advanced display for the active refresh rate and test with DRR disabled. Verify that the game is not assigned to the integrated GPU and that a vendor dGPU or Hybrid mode has not changed after a restart.
Fans are loud during ordinary work
Return to Balanced or Quiet/Windows mode for non-gaming tasks. A high-power profile is designed for sustained load, not for web browsing or documents.

A graphics-mode change does nothing immediately
Some systems apply the change only after a restart. Lenovo documents this requirement for dGPU mode on the referenced Legion model; other laptops can use different procedures. Save work and follow the on-screen restart instruction instead of repeatedly toggling the switch.
A sensible first-day configuration
After updates, use the maker’s documented gaming profile while connected to AC power, set Windows to Best performance for that plugged-in state, select the panel refresh rate you actually want, and assign each demanding game to High performance when a discrete GPU is present. Keep a separate Balanced/efficiency and Hybrid or iGPU-oriented setup for battery use. Enable windowed-game optimization or HDR only after confirming that the game, Windows version and display support the feature and that the visual result is worth its trade-offs.
