Recommended Free Tools
On a new phone or computer, first install every available operating-system security update, create a strong unlock credential, and make the device lock itself when unattended. Next, protect the account used on the device with two-factor authentication, reduce what appears on the lock screen, enable available theft-finding controls, and verify that important data is backed up.
Menu names and feature availability differ by operating-system version, device model, and manufacturer. Use the checklist below as a priority order, then follow the platform notes for the controls your device actually offers.

These settings address the most likely ways a new device can be compromised: unpatched software, an easy-to-guess local credential, an unattended unlocked screen, a stolen account password, information visible without unlocking, and data that exists only on the device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Install operating-system updates. Check the device’s system-update area and apply every available security update before you begin normal use.
- Create a strong unlock credential. Set a PIN, password, or passcode that is difficult to guess. Add a supported biometric only as a convenience layer backed by that credential.
- Enable automatic locking. Require the credential after the screen turns off or the device wakes from sleep.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for the main account. This is the account used for services such as Apple Account, Google, or a work identity.
- Limit lock-screen exposure. Decide whether notification text and quick controls should be available before unlocking.
- Enable finding and theft protections. Turn on the device-finding service and any supported remote-lock or theft-detection options.
- Confirm backups. Make sure irreplaceable files and settings can be restored if the device is lost, stolen, damaged, or replaced.
Complete the first three before signing into email, banking, social networks, or a workplace account. The remaining steps protect those accounts and your data if the hardware is taken.

Install security updates before adding your data
Open the operating system’s update screen during setup, connect to a trusted network and power source if required, and install all offered updates. Restart when prompted and check once more afterward; an update can reveal a second pending update. Android’s Security & privacy overview shows a System updates status and an entry point to install updates. Android 13 and later commonly combine security and privacy controls on one page, while Android 12 and earlier may present separate pages; manufacturer software can change both the location and wording (Google’s Android security and privacy settings guide).
On Windows, macOS, iPhone, and iPad, use the current system-update area supplied by the manufacturer. The exact desktop steps vary by release, so do not assume that a menu path from an older version still applies. If the device reports that it is current, record the installed version and security-update date so you can recognize an unusually long gap later.
Choose an unlock credential that you can protect
A screen lock is the boundary protecting local files, saved sessions, and settings when somebody has the device in hand. Biometrics make frequent unlocking easier, but they do not replace the underlying PIN, password, or passcode: the credential is still required at specific times and after a restart. Choose a credential you can remember without writing it on or beside the device.

| Platform or option | What the official guidance says | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Android PIN | Google recommends a six-digit PIN or longer. | Faster to enter than a long password, but avoid dates, repeated digits, and patterns visible to someone watching. |
| Android password | Google describes a strong password as the most secure standard screen-lock option. | More resistant to guessing when unique and long, but slower to enter frequently. |
| iPhone or iPad passcode | Apple uses a six-digit passcode by default and also offers custom numeric and alphanumeric choices. | A custom alphanumeric passcode increases complexity; a longer numeric code can be easier to use repeatedly. |
| Windows sign-in | Microsoft recommends a good password or Windows Hello. | Windows Hello can improve convenience while retaining a password or PIN fallback. |
| Mac login | Microsoft’s cross-platform guidance calls for a strong Mac unlock password; Apple supports biometrics on compatible Macs. | Keep the password private even when Touch ID is enabled. |
On Android, the screen-lock credential can also encrypt manual and automatic backups, according to Google. That gives the lock a second role: it protects data stored away from the handset as well as data on it (Google’s Android screen-lock instructions). Google warns that enabling automatic confirmation of an unlock can reduce security, so leave that convenience feature off if your priority is stronger verification.
When a biometric option is appropriate
Use Face ID, Touch ID, Optic ID, Windows Hello, or an Android biometric when your device supports it and you understand when the system will ask for the fallback credential. A biometric is convenient for routine access, but anyone who learns your underlying passcode can generally bypass that convenience. Never share the fallback credential with friends, family, or coworkers.

Make the device lock itself
Automatic locking limits the time an unattended device remains open. Set a short interval that fits your work: shorter for a laptop used in public, somewhat longer when frequent interruptions make constant re-entry impractical. Microsoft cites 10 or 15 minutes as typical Windows idle intervals, not as a universal requirement. Also enable the setting that requires sign-in when the computer wakes from sleep or the screen turns off (Microsoft’s device-security guidance).
After changing the interval, test it: leave the device untouched until the screen locks, then confirm that the PIN, password, passcode, or biometric is required. A setting that merely turns the display off without requiring sign-in does not provide the same protection.
Protect the account behind the device with two-factor authentication
A device can be perfectly locked while its cloud account remains vulnerable to a reused or stolen password. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on the account that synchronizes the device, stores backups, or can remotely locate it. The second factor means a new sign-in may require a verification code in addition to the password.
Apple Account path
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings; on a Mac, open System Settings. Select your account name, then Sign-In & Security, and follow the two-factor authentication enrollment prompts. Apple says a verification code may be required when signing in on a new device or on the web. Its support instructions are at Apple’s two-factor authentication guide.
Other accounts
Use the security page for the Google, Microsoft, work, or school account associated with the device and enable its available second factor. Prefer a method you can reliably access when the phone is unavailable, and store recovery information somewhere secure. The exact labels and methods depend on the account provider and organization.

Reduce what a stranger can see or do from the lock screen
Lock-screen privacy is a convenience decision. Showing full notification text lets you triage messages without unlocking, but it can reveal one-time codes, health information, work conversations, or personal previews to anyone within sight. Hiding content while retaining a generic alert is safer in public places. Review whether the lock screen should expose notification history, quick settings, voice assistants, payment cards, replies, or USB accessories.
Android controls
Android’s security and theft pages include controls for hiding notification content and setting a SIM lock. A SIM PIN helps prevent someone from moving your phone number to another device simply by taking the SIM, but it can also lock the SIM after repeated incorrect attempts; keep the carrier’s recovery process available. Feature names and locations differ by manufacturer and Android release (Google’s Android theft-protection guidance).
iPhone and iPad controls
Apple lists lock-screen features that can remain available, including Notification Center, Control Center, Siri, replying to messages, Wallet, and USB accessories. In the passcode settings, turn off any capability whose privacy cost is greater than its convenience for your situation. Someone who finds a locked phone should not be able to read sensitive notifications or use controls you do not need (Apple’s passcode guidance).
Enable finding, remote lock, and theft protections
Turn on the platform’s device-finding service while you still have the device. Verify that it reports the device as protected and that location and connectivity requirements are satisfied. A finding service is useful only if it was enabled before the loss.
Android Remote Lock prerequisites
Google’s Remote Lock feature is not universal. Where supported, Google lists these prerequisites:

- The phone has an internet connection.
The same page describes other theft protections, including Failed Authentication Lock, and notes that availability depends on Android version and device model. If a feature is absent, do not assume it failed silently; check the manufacturer’s support documentation for that model and use the protections that are actually offered.
What to test
From another trusted device, sign in to the relevant finding service and confirm that the new device appears. Review whether you can locate it, make it ring, or lock it remotely. Do not wait until a theft to discover that the service is disabled, the account is wrong, or the phone has no connection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Back up data before the first mishap
Back up important files to a secure location outside the device. Microsoft recommends an external or cloud destination that you can access if the original hardware is lost or destroyed (Microsoft’s device-security guidance). Include photographs, documents, contacts, authentication-recovery information, and any application data that would be difficult to recreate.
Check the backup status rather than assuming that a switch means a usable copy exists. Confirm the last successful backup date, available storage, and whether the account has permission to restore it. On Android, Google says a PIN, pattern, or password can encrypt manual and automatic backups with the screen lock. That improves confidentiality, but forgetting the credential can make recovery harder, so keep your recovery arrangements current.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A simple restore check
- Open the device’s backup settings and identify the account receiving the backup.
- Check the timestamp of the most recent completed backup.
- Review which categories are included and whether any large folders are excluded.
- Sign in to the account’s web or secondary-device view, where available, and confirm that the data is visible.
- Keep at least one recovery method that does not depend solely on the device you are backing up.
Platform-specific review after the basics
Android phones
Open Settings, then look for Security or Security & privacy. The overview can surface app warnings, account-security alerts, update status, device-finder status, and privacy permissions. Open each alert instead of dismissing it blindly. From the same area, review Screen lock, notification visibility, SIM lock, and theft-protection options. The exact path changes across manufacturers and Android versions; Android 13 and later often combine security and privacy, while older releases may separate them (Android security and privacy settings).
Best Value
iPhone and iPad
Set the passcode first, then review the lock-screen access list in the passcode settings. Disable previews or controls that expose more than you want a passerby to see. In Settings > [your account name] > Sign-In & Security, enroll the Apple Account in two-factor authentication. Enable Face ID or Touch ID where supported, but keep the passcode private and memorable. The available lock-screen switches differ by device and operating-system release.
Windows computers
Use a strong Windows password or Windows Hello, require sign-in after sleep, and set automatic screen locking. Microsoft advises against letting other people use a work device for entertainment or school: “If at all possible don’t allow friends or family members to use your work device for entertainment or school.” Keep personal and work accounts separate, and back up important files to a secure location outside the computer.
Mac computers
Set a strong login password, enable a supported biometric for convenience, and require that password after sleep or screen saver activation. Apple menu names have changed between macOS releases; if an older instruction refers to System Preferences, look for the equivalent control in current System Settings. Finish by confirming two-factor authentication for the Apple Account and verifying that backups have completed.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Using a short or reused PIN: replace it with a six-digit-or-longer PIN on Android or a longer custom passcode/password where practical.
- Relying on biometrics alone: learn the fallback credential and keep it private.
- Locking the screen without requiring sign-in: change the wake or sleep security setting and test it.
- Leaving notification previews exposed: hide sensitive content while keeping generic alerts if you still need them.
- Assuming every theft feature exists: check the Android version and device model; use the supported alternatives.
- Skipping the backup verification: inspect the last successful backup and confirm that the account can restore it.
- Letting others use a work computer: keep the work device for its intended user and use a separate personal device for shared entertainment or schoolwork.
When a setting is missing
Do not substitute a random third-party app for a missing system control. First check the device model, operating-system version, manufacturer help, and whether the feature requires an active account, SIM, verified number, internet connection, or compatible hardware. If a menu moved after an update, search the system settings for the feature name rather than following a screenshot from an older release. The goal is to confirm what your specific device supports, not to force every phone or computer into the same configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a six-digit PIN secure enough for a new phone?
Google recommends a six-digit PIN or longer for Android. Choose a longer or alphanumeric credential if you can use it consistently, and avoid dates, repeated digits, and visible patterns. On iPhone and iPad, Apple provides a six-digit default plus custom numeric and alphanumeric choices.
Should I hide every lock-screen notification?
Not necessarily. Hide message content and one-time codes if privacy is the priority, while retaining generic alerts if you need to notice calls or reminders. Also review whether Control Center, Siri, Wallet, replies, or USB accessories should work while locked.
Why can’t I find Android Remote Lock?
Google says Remote Lock depends on support for the Android version and device model. It also requires a screen lock, active SIM, verified phone number, Find Hub, and an internet connection. Check those prerequisites and the manufacturer’s documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat should I do if my computer’s update or lock-screen menu has a different name?
Menu labels change across operating-system releases and manufacturers. Open the current system-update or sign-in settings, search within Settings for the relevant feature, and use the device maker’s instructions for that exact model and version.
