Use screening when you want callers to explain themselves before your phone rings; use silencing or blocking only when you can tolerate missing a legitimate new number.
The exact controls depend on your phone model, operating-system version, country, language, carrier and dialer app. Check the menus below and use the closest equivalent if a label is different or absent.

What each scam-call control actually does
Several features are often described loosely as “spam blocking,” but they intervene at different points:

- Spam warnings flag a number that the platform or carrier associates with spam or fraud.
- Screening answers an unknown caller with an automated prompt and gathers a reason before deciding whether to ring your phone.
- Silencing prevents the phone from ringing and routes the call to voicemail, while retaining a record in call history.
- Blocking rejects calls that meet a chosen spam or risk threshold.
A conservative setup enables identification and warnings everywhere, adds screening where it is available, and avoids blanket blocking if you regularly receive calls from new doctors, schools, delivery drivers, employers or service providers.

| Samsung Galaxy | Open Phone → More options → Settings → Caller ID and spam protection and accept the terms. | Caller ID and warnings identify suspected spam; calls otherwise follow your normal ringing settings. | Under Block spam and scam calls, choose Block all spam and scam calls or Only block high-risk scam calls, when available. |
Set up scam-call protection on an iPhone
1. Turn on caller identification
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Phone.
- Open Call Blocking & Identification.
- Enable the business or caller-identification options shown for your phone, such as identification supplied by Apple Business Connect, your carrier or a supported call-identification app.
What appears in this list depends on installed apps and carrier support, so two iPhones may not show the same choices. Apple’s current instructions are documented in Screen and block calls on iPhone.
2. Choose whether unknown callers should ring
- Go to Settings → Apps → Phone → Call Screening.
- Select one of the three modes:
- Never: leaves screening off; unknown calls behave normally.
- Ask Reason for Calling: an unknown caller is asked for more information before your iPhone rings. You can then decide whether to answer.
- Silence: calls from unsaved numbers are silenced, sent to voicemail and listed in Recents.
Siri uses the iPhone’s default language when it speaks to a screened caller. Choose Ask Reason for Calling if you want a chance to receive legitimate unfamiliar calls without an immediate interruption. Choose Silence if repeated nuisance calls are more disruptive than the possibility of checking voicemail for a genuine caller.
3. Check for carrier junk-call silencing
Some carriers expose Silence Junk Callers. When available, it sends calls that the carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud to voicemail. This is carrier-dependent and is not a universal iPhone capability. It is separate from Apple’s general screening choices, so do not assume that every iPhone can use it.

Set up scam-call protection on a Google Pixel
1. Enable caller ID and spam warnings
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Open Spam and Call Screen. Some software versions label this menu Call Screen.
- Turn on See caller ID & spam.
This can display a business identity or a warning when Google associates a number with spam. Google explains the setting and its behavior in Use caller ID & spam protection.
2. Review Call Screen protection levels
Supported Pixel phones provide automatic screening choices in the same area. Depending on the model, software, language and country, the phone may screen calls identified as spam, possibly faked numbers or first-time callers. A screened caller can be asked who they are and why they are calling. If Google determines that the call is spam, Call Screen may decline it; if it is not identified as spam, your phone can ring and display the caller’s response.
Google’s instructions distinguish newer and older devices. Pixel 7 and later can have automatic screening for spam, potentially faked numbers and first-time callers, while Pixel 6 and earlier have a different set of controls. Open the protection-level options actually shown on your phone rather than assuming that a setting listed for another Pixel generation is available to you. See Screen your calls before you answer them for the model-specific behavior.

3. Consider Pixel Scam Detection separately
Scam Detection is an additional feature, not a synonym for ordinary caller ID. Google’s eligibility guidance covers Pixel 6 and later in the United States, Pixel 9 and later in a number of other listed countries, and certain newer models with United States-only eligibility. Availability also depends on the SIM and other requirements. Verify your exact device and location in Protect yourself with spam & scam detection on your Pixel phone before relying on this feature.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →4. Know the limits
Google states: “Not all spam calls and robocalls can be detected.” Screening may also misunderstand or fail to transcribe a caller. Treat an automatic decline or warning as a risk signal, not proof that every other call is safe.
Set up scam-call protection on a Samsung Galaxy
1. Enable Caller ID and spam protection
- Open the Samsung Phone app.
- Tap More options (three dots), then Settings.
- Tap Caller ID and spam protection.
- Review and accept the terms, then turn the feature on.
Samsung calls this service Smart Call in its support material. The company cautions that it may not be available on all carriers or models; some call settings are model-dependent. Follow the path in Block spam calls with Smart Call on your Galaxy phone and check Adjust call settings on your Galaxy phone if your menu differs.

2. Select a blocking threshold
If your phone offers Block spam and scam calls, enable it and choose the level that matches your tolerance for missed calls:
- Block all spam and scam calls: blocks calls Samsung identifies as spam or scams, regardless of the assigned risk level.
- Only block high-risk scam calls: blocks the calls Samsung considers most dangerous while allowing lower-risk spam calls through.
The high-risk choice is the better starting point if you are waiting for legitimate calls from numbers that are not in your contacts. The all-calls choice is more disruptive to scammers but can also remove more unfamiliar calls before you see them.
3. Handle a number that gets through
From an incoming call or your recent-call list, you can block a specific number or report it. Use this for repeat callers that the automated service did not classify, while remembering that scammers often rotate numbers.
Best Value
Choose the right level of aggressiveness
Conservative: you cannot miss unfamiliar callers
- Turn on caller ID and spam warnings.
- Use iPhone Ask Reason for Calling or Pixel Call Screen where supported.
- On Samsung, select Only block high-risk scam calls if that option is present.
- Check voicemail and Recents for calls that were silenced or screened.
This profile suits people expecting calls from a new medical office, school, employer, delivery service or contractor.
Balanced: reduce interruptions without hiding every new number
- Keep identification and warnings enabled.
- Screen unknown calls before they ring when the platform supports it.
- Use Samsung’s high-risk-only blocking rather than blocking every identified spam call.
- Use iPhone Silence only if voicemail is a reliable way for your important contacts to reach you.
Aggressive: nuisance calls are the priority
- On iPhone, choose Silence and enable carrier Silence Junk Callers if offered.
- On Pixel, select the strongest automatic Call Screen protection available for your model.
- On Samsung, choose Block all spam and scam calls when available.
Before using this profile, add important organizations and personal contacts to your address book and tell expected callers to leave a voicemail. No setting can recover a legitimate call that was blocked without a message.
Privacy and data handling
Google caller ID and spam protection
Google says the phone may send information about calls to Google for business identification or spam assessment. Numbers in your contacts are not sent for this purpose; the feature concerns numbers from callers or recipients outside your contacts. The explanation appears in Use caller ID & spam protection.
Google Call Screen
Call Screen audio and transcripts are stored on the phone. Google says you can review the screening material and optionally share screening-phase audio, transcript and related details with Google to improve Call Screen and spam detection. That described sharing occurs before you join the call. See Keep your calls private for the controls and storage explanation.
Apple and Samsung availability
Apple’s identification sources can include Apple Business Connect, a carrier or supported apps. Carrier support also determines whether junk-call silencing appears. Samsung’s Smart Call availability varies by carrier and model. These dependencies mean that an absent menu is often a compatibility limitation rather than a setting you have overlooked.
Troubleshoot when a setting is missing or ineffective
The menu is not there
- Confirm that you are using the phone maker’s Phone app, not a third-party dialer.
- Install the latest system and Phone-app updates offered for your device.
- Check the country, language, SIM and carrier requirements, especially for Pixel screening and Scam Detection.
- On Samsung, look for Caller ID and spam protection rather than assuming the service is present on every Galaxy model.
Important calls are being silenced or blocked
- Switch iPhone from Silence to Ask Reason for Calling or Never.
- Lower Pixel’s automatic screening level, or turn off automatic screening while retaining caller ID and spam warnings.
- Change Samsung from Block all spam and scam calls to Only block high-risk scam calls.
- Ask the caller to leave voicemail and add recurring legitimate numbers to Contacts.
Scam calls still arrive
Keep expectations realistic. Detection databases and models can miss new numbers, spoofed caller IDs and changing scam campaigns. Report the number using your phone’s available report control, block it, and avoid returning suspicious calls or sharing account codes. The built-in settings reduce exposure; they are not a guarantee that every scam will be detected.
Quick Recap
A quick setup checklist
- Enable caller ID and spam warnings on your platform.
- Choose screening, normal ringing or silent voicemail for unknown numbers.
- Select a blocking threshold that matches the legitimate unfamiliar calls you receive.
- Verify that the feature is supported by your model, operating system, country, language and carrier.
- Review privacy settings, especially Google’s number lookups and optional Call Screen sharing.
- Test the behavior with a trusted person calling from a number that is not saved, then check voicemail and Recents.
