Samsung Wallet works on many Galaxy phones, including the Galaxy S26, S25, S24, S23, S22, S21 and S20 families, selected older S-series models, Note8 through Note20 devices, several Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold generations, and selected A-series phones. Samsung’s current U.S. FAQ gives Android 9 or later as the general Wallet requirement.
Wallet availability is not the same as guaranteed tap-to-pay support. Contactless payments also require NFC, a supported country and regional handset variant, compatible carrier firmware, and a payment card whose issuer allows it to be added to Samsung Wallet. Confirm the exact model and market before relying on a family-level compatibility list.

Samsung Galaxy phones that support Samsung Wallet
The most current broad list is Samsung’s U.S. Wallet FAQ. It identifies the following Galaxy families as compatible, while warning that availability can differ by country, carrier, model variant and firmware. Use the table as a starting point rather than a worldwide guarantee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Galaxy family | Models or generations named by Samsung | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S | S26, S25, S24, S23, S22, S21 and S20 families | Exact regional model, carrier firmware and NFC support |
| Older Galaxy S | Selected S10, S9 and S8 models | Not every storage, carrier or regional variant is necessarily included |
| Galaxy Note | Note8 through Note20 devices | Check the specific Note model and market |
| Galaxy Z Flip | Multiple Z Flip generations | Confirm the generation and local-market listing |
| Galaxy Z Fold | Multiple Z Fold generations | Imported versions may have different service availability |
| Galaxy A | Selected A-series models | The supported subset varies; check Samsung’s model-level list |
Samsung’s FAQ is the better reference for the general Wallet requirement and the current U.S. device list: Samsung Wallet frequently asked questions. A phone appearing in one of these families does not prove that every payment feature is enabled on every regional version.

What the Samsung Developer list adds
Samsung’s developer documentation lists S20 and later S models, several Note generations, Z Flip and Z Fold families, and selected A phones. It also says supported models can vary slightly by market. That page documents Samsung Pay service availability rather than replacing the current Wallet FAQ, so its Android wording should be read separately: Samsung Developer country and device availability.
Wallet support is different from tap-to-pay support
Samsung Wallet is the app and service that stores eligible payment cards and other credentials. A compatible phone can still fail to make a contactless purchase if it lacks NFC, if the service is unavailable in the country, or if the card issuer does not support that card in the relevant market.

The four checks required for contactless payment
- Compatible Galaxy model: The exact model number, not just “Galaxy S” or “Galaxy A,” must be on Samsung’s local supported-device list.
- NFC hardware: Samsung Gulf states that contactless payments require an NFC-enabled phone. Wallet installation alone does not add NFC to a handset.
- Market and software availability: Samsung identifies country, region, carrier and firmware as factors that can change which Wallet functions are offered.
- Supported payment card: Your bank or card issuer must permit that card to be enrolled and used through Samsung Wallet in your market.
Samsung’s Gulf support explanation covers the NFC requirement and select-device limitation: Can I use Samsung Wallet on my Galaxy phone?
Android versions and regional differences
The U.S. Wallet FAQ states Android 9 or later as the general device requirement. Samsung’s separate developer page uses “Android R” in its Samsung Pay service guidance and notes that the supported device list may vary by market. These are different pages describing related services, so do not treat the Android R statement as a replacement for the Wallet FAQ’s Android 9 threshold.

An eligible Android version is necessary, but it is not sufficient. Samsung can enable or withhold Wallet features by country, carrier configuration, firmware release and exact model. Two phones with similar hardware names can therefore have different Wallet results when one is an imported regional variant.

- Identify the complete model. Open the phone’s device information screen and record the model number, not only the marketing name. Keep the country where the phone was purchased and the mobile carrier’s firmware in mind.
- Open Samsung’s local Wallet support page. Start with the U.S. FAQ if the phone and card are U.S.-based. Otherwise, use Samsung’s support site for the country where the Wallet account and card will be used.
- Match the model number and generation. A family-level match such as “Galaxy S24” is useful, but the local list is the authority for carrier and regional variants. Do not infer that an unlisted A-series model is supported because another A-series phone is.
- Check the Android release and updates. The U.S. FAQ’s general threshold is Android 9 or newer. Install available Samsung software updates, because firmware is one of the factors Samsung says can affect availability.
- Confirm NFC. Search the phone’s Settings for “NFC” or “contactless payments.” If no NFC control exists, the handset cannot perform NFC tap-to-pay, even if the Wallet app can be installed.
- Ask the card issuer about Samsung Wallet. Confirm that the particular card type, country and account are supported. Issuer approval can differ between debit, credit, prepaid and business cards.
Adding a card and making a first contactless payment
Once the phone, market and card pass the checks above, enroll the card in Samsung Wallet and complete the verification requested by the issuer. Verification may involve the bank’s app, a text message or a call, depending on the issuer. A successful enrollment is the practical confirmation that the issuer supports that card for the account’s market.
- Open Samsung Wallet and choose the option to add a payment card.
- Capture or enter the card details and accept the requested terms.
- Complete the identity or fraud-prevention verification supplied by the issuer.
- Set or confirm the phone’s screen-lock and Wallet security requirements.
- At a payment terminal displaying the contactless symbol, authenticate as Wallet requests and hold the phone near the NFC reader until the terminal confirms the transaction.
The terminal, merchant and card network must also accept contactless transactions. A Wallet card can be valid while a particular terminal, merchant policy or card restriction prevents the purchase.

Why a supported Galaxy phone may still fail
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Wallet is missing or cannot be activated | Country, carrier firmware, model variant or Android version is not eligible | Compare the full model number with the local Samsung list and confirm Android 9 or later for the general U.S. Wallet requirement |
| The app opens, but tap to pay does nothing | NFC is disabled or unavailable | Search Settings for NFC/contactless controls; a handset without NFC cannot make contactless payments |
| A card cannot be added | The issuer or card product is unsupported in that market | Contact the card issuer and ask specifically about Samsung Wallet enrollment |
| One regional phone works while an imported phone does not | Regional software or service availability differs | Check Samsung’s local support page instead of relying on the phone’s family name |
| A previously working feature disappears after a change | Firmware, carrier configuration or account-region conditions changed | Install current updates, recheck the local availability page and contact Samsung or the issuer |
Samsung explicitly cautions that model, country, region, carrier and firmware can change availability. A list published for the United States should not be presented as a universal list for every imported or unlocked phone.
Using Samsung Wallet while traveling
Samsung’s U.S. travel guidance says a digital card in Wallet should work abroad wherever the physical card would be accepted, subject to the card issuer’s terms. That describes use of a U.S.-registered card; it does not promise that Wallet enrollment, every feature or every imported handset is supported in the destination country.
Samsung also says that registering a card while outside the United States may require contacting the issuer. If you are setting up Wallet during a trip, complete enrollment before departure when possible and keep a physical card available as a backup. Read the issuer’s foreign-transaction, offline-use and verification rules before relying on the phone alone. See Samsung’s guidance for using Samsung Pay outside the United States.

Compatibility by itself is rarely a reason to replace a working phone. If your current Galaxy is listed locally, runs the required software, has NFC and accepts your card, upgrading will not automatically make payments more reliable. A newer model may be relevant when the existing handset lacks NFC, cannot reach the required Android version, has unsupported regional firmware or no longer receives updates.
| Your situation | Most sensible action |
|---|---|
| Recent S, Note, Z or listed A phone with NFC | Check the exact model, update software and enroll the card; no upgrade is implied |
| Older S8/S9/S10 or Note device | Verify the specific variant because Samsung lists only selected models |
| Phone bought in another country | Use the destination market’s Samsung support page and confirm carrier firmware and card availability |
| No NFC setting or control | Contactless payment is not possible on that handset; Wallet features that do not require NFC may still differ by market |
| Card issuer rejects enrollment | Resolve support with the issuer; changing phones will not make an unsupported card eligible |
Bottom line for Galaxy owners
Samsung Wallet covers a wide range of Galaxy generations, with the current U.S. list reaching the Galaxy S26 family and selected older S, Note, Z and A models. Tap-to-pay requires more than the right family name: the exact regional handset must be eligible, NFC must be present, the software and country must support the service, and the issuer must approve the card. Verify those four conditions on Samsung’s local support page and with the issuer before depending on contactless payment.
