Start by checking which apps and features are using battery on your Galaxy, then adjust screen and background activity where the data points. For privacy, review camera, microphone, and location permissions app by app. Menu names and available options vary by model and software version, so use the closest equivalent on your phone.
1. Find what is using your battery
Battery drain depends on settings, environment, and usage. Bright screens, long screen-on time, demanding apps, high-resolution streaming, enabled services, and weak or fluctuating mobile signal can all contribute. A new phone may also use more power for a few days while setup and optimization finish. - Open Settings and look for Battery, Battery and device care, or Device care.
- Open the battery graph or usage details and check which apps and features account for the most use.
- Choose a targeted change based on what you find instead of restricting every app. Samsung says paths and labels can vary by device, software, and app version.
A high-use app is not automatically a problem: navigation, video, games, and other demanding tasks can use substantial power while you are actively using them. Look for unexpected or persistent activity, then decide whether its background behavior or your usage of it should change.
2. Make simple screen adjustments
The display can consume more power when it is bright or stays on longer than necessary. Try a comfortable lower brightness and a shorter screen timeout. Adaptive Brightness can adjust screen visibility to ambient light; a dark-tone wallpaper or theme may also help on displays where it is useful. The benefit depends on the phone and how you use it, so there is no universal runtime gain to expect.

3. Restrict background apps selectively
Samsung’s Background usage limits distinguish between sleeping and deep sleeping apps. The stronger restriction is not appropriate for every app.
- Sleeping apps may run intermittently; notifications or updates can be delayed.
- Deep sleeping apps do not run in the background and work only when you open them.
In Settings, look under Battery for Background usage limits, then add only infrequently used apps whose background activity you can do without. Keep messaging, work, security, or other apps out of deeper restrictions if they need to sync or notify you promptly. Where available, Never auto sleeping apps can exempt apps that need to stay current, but those exceptions can use more battery in the background.

Samsung describes app management as taking usage patterns, including inactivity and background battery consumption, into account. Its developer documentation also discusses Android 14 foreground-service policy changes beginning with One UI 6, so older descriptions of app behavior should not be assumed to apply identically to every current device or app. See Samsung Application Management.

4. Use Power saving with its tradeoffs in mind
Power saving can extend runtime by restricting background apps’ access to Wi-Fi and mobile data, disabling features such as Always On Display, and allowing adjustments to CPU speed and brightness. Samsung also says location services may be limited. Check the options shown on your phone before enabling it: background sync, alerts, or location-dependent features may not behave as usual. 5. Review camera, microphone, and location access
Use Permission manager to see which apps can access sensitive functions. Depending on your software, find it under Settings > Privacy or Settings > Security and privacy. Review Camera, Microphone, and Location permissions app by app.
- Choose Allow only while using the app or Ask every time where offered, rather than allowing continuous access by default.
- Match access to the app’s purpose: a navigation, ride-share, or location-sharing app may need location in ways a simple utility does not.
- Consider approximate rather than precise location when an app does not need your exact position. Availability and wording depend on the device and software.

6. Identify camera or microphone use
A green dot appears on Galaxy devices when an app is using the camera or microphone. If you see it, open the notification panel and tap the indicator to identify the app. If the access is unexpected, close the app and review its permission in Permission manager. The indicator helps you investigate current sensor use; it is not a complete privacy audit.
7. Check optional security and data-sharing controls
The Security and privacy menu may also include Auto Blocker, app security checks, security updates, diagnostic-data choices, and personalization or ad controls. These are security and data-sharing options, not guaranteed battery optimizations. Review them according to your needs rather than turning off every service by default. When a setting causes a problem
- If notifications or updates arrive late after restricting an app, remove it from Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps, or use an available exception.
- If Power saving disrupts background data or location-dependent features, review its options and disable it when those features matter.
- If an app stops working after a permission change, restore only the access its feature needs, using a limited option such as while-in-use access when suitable.
