Which Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra settings should you change first?

Menu names and available options depend on the One UI and Android version installed, as well as your region and carrier. Samsung’s launch specification sheet describes the Galaxy S25 Ultra with Android 15 and One UI 7.0, while a Samsung regional support listing shows an Android 16 user manual modified September 18, 2025. Check your build before following any menu-by-menu instruction.

1. Check your software version before changing anything

The first setting to review is the software build itself. Samsung’s launch documentation covers Android 15 with One UI 7.0, but later support material includes an Android 16 manual. A setting shown in one manual can move, gain a new name, or be unavailable on another carrier build.

  1. Open Settings and use its search field for software information, Android version, or One UI version.
  2. Write down the Android version, One UI version, and security patch level.
  3. When an instruction below does not match your screen, search Settings for the feature name rather than assuming your phone is missing it.

This check prevents you from applying a launch-build recommendation to a later interface. It also gives you a useful reference if a carrier update changes a menu.

2. Decide what you want visible on the locked phone

Always On Display (AOD) is the most personal first-setup choice. Samsung describes it as a way to show the time, date, notifications, missed calls, and other information while the screen is off. On Galaxy S25 devices running One UI 7.0, Samsung says Now brief widget information can appear on the AOD lock screen.

  • Advanced quad‑camera system: 200 MP wide main sensor, plus a 50 MP ultrawide, a 50 MP periscope telephoto (5× optical zoom), and a 10 MP telephoto (3× optical zoom) — giving flexibility from ultra‑wide through detailed telephoto shots, and strong performance in varied lighting.

Keep AOD on for glanceable information

Choose this approach if you regularly check the phone on a desk or nightstand without unlocking it. Samsung’s currently documented route is Settings > Lock screen and AOD > Always On Display. Depending on your build, you may see controls for when AOD appears, clock or widget presentation, notification details, and brightness behavior. If the labels differ, search Settings for Always On Display.

  • Show only the information you can interpret at a glance.
  • Review whether Now brief content belongs on a locked screen in your privacy model.
  • Use the least distracting clock and notification treatment that still serves your routine.

Turn AOD off for a quieter lock screen

Disable AOD if you prefer a dark, distraction-free display or do not want notifications and widgets visible when the phone is unattended. Samsung presents turning AOD off as an available way to save battery power, but it does not assign a measured saving. Treat the change as a preference and observe your own standby behavior rather than expecting a guaranteed runtime increase.

Separate AOD from lock-screen notification privacy

AOD and lock-screen notification details answer different questions. You can keep a clock visible while limiting message previews, or allow richer previews for convenience. Search Settings for lock screen notifications and choose whether sensitive content should be hidden until authentication. Check the result with the phone locked; notification behavior can differ between app categories and software versions.

3. Set the display for comfort before chasing battery changes

Samsung lists the S25 Ultra’s panel as a 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with QHD+ resolution, 120Hz adaptive refresh, and a stated brightness figure of 2600 nits. Those are hardware specifications, not proof that one display configuration is best for every owner.

Decision Choose the more convenience-focused option when… Choose the more restrained option when…
Refresh behavior You value fluid scrolling and animation. You prefer to minimize motion or want to evaluate power use conservatively.
Resolution You inspect fine text, diagrams, or high-detail photos at close range. You cannot see a practical difference in daily use and favor a simpler power experiment.
Brightness You often use the phone outdoors or in bright rooms. You mainly use it indoors and find a bright panel tiring.
Color and comfort You want vivid media playback and strong contrast. You read for long periods and prefer a warmer, less intense presentation.

Make one display change at a time

Open Settings and search for motion smoothness, screen resolution, brightness, eye comfort, or dark mode. Samsung may group or rename these controls in your One UI version. Change one item, use the phone for a normal day, and then decide whether the result is actually better. This avoids attributing a comfort or battery difference to the wrong control.

Use adaptive brightness as a starting point

Adaptive brightness is a reasonable baseline if you move between indoor and outdoor lighting. If the screen repeatedly feels too bright or too dim, adjust it manually for several days before changing other display controls. Your preferred brightness depends on lighting, eyesight, content, and how long you keep the screen on; the 2600-nit specification does not mean the panel should run at that level continuously.

4. Treat battery settings as experiments, not promises

The S25 Ultra has a Samsung-listed typical battery capacity of 5,000mAh. Samsung also warns that actual battery life varies with network environment, usage patterns, and other factors. A setting that helps one person may make little difference for another, particularly with weak cellular coverage, navigation, gaming, camera recording, or high screen brightness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Establish a baseline

  1. Charge the phone normally and note your screen-on time, overnight percentage change, and the apps you use most.
  2. Search Settings for battery and inspect the battery-use breakdown after a representative day.
  3. Identify whether the problem is screen time, background activity, poor reception, location use, or a particular app.

Only then decide which available controls to test. Keep a short note of the date and change so you can reverse a setting that harms notifications or performance.

Prioritize low-friction changes

  • Use a comfortable automatic or manually limited brightness rather than leaving the panel unnecessarily bright.
  • Review apps with unusually high background use and restrict them only if delayed updates are acceptable.
  • Use a power-saving mode for specific situations, such as travel or a long day away from a charger, instead of assuming it is ideal all the time.
  • Check mobile-network behavior in places where reception is poor; a network problem cannot always be fixed by a display toggle.

Search terms and available battery controls vary by build. Follow the descriptions shown on your device and avoid claims that a particular toggle will add a fixed number of hours.

5. Configure the camera around the way you actually shoot

The Ultra’s camera hardware gives you more choices than most phones, so the useful first change is deciding which choices should be easy to reach. Samsung’s launch specifications list a 200MP wide camera, 50MP ultra-wide camera, 10MP and 50MP telephoto cameras, and a 12MP autofocus selfie camera. Video capture is listed up to 4K at 120 frames per second and 8K at 30 frames per second.

Capability What to decide during setup
200MP wide camera Whether you want a high-resolution capture mode available for subjects where cropping detail matters, or a simpler everyday default.
50MP ultra-wide camera Whether wide scenes, interiors, and group shots are a frequent part of your camera use.
10MP and 50MP telephoto cameras Which zoom levels you use most, and whether you prefer quick access to a consistent focal length.
4K up to 120fps Whether you need high-frame-rate motion capture and are willing to manage larger files and editing requirements.
8K at 30fps Whether very high-resolution recording is useful for your workflow, given storage and playback needs.

Confirm labels on your own build

The available evidence establishes the hardware capabilities but does not establish current setting-by-setting camera paths. Open the Camera app and its settings, or search Settings for camera settings, then verify the labels on your phone before changing defaults. Camera menus can be reorganized by One UI updates and regional software.

Make the first camera test practical

  1. Photograph the same static subject in the everyday photo mode and in any higher-resolution mode you are considering.
  2. Record a short clip at your intended resolution and frame rate.
  3. Check file size, focus behavior, playback compatibility, and whether the mode is convenient enough to use repeatedly.

This is a preference test, not a claim that one mode is universally superior. Keep the mode that matches your storage, editing, and sharing habits.

6. Make the S Pen earn its place in your routine

Samsung lists S Pen functionality as exclusive to the Galaxy S25 Ultra among the S25 models shown in its launch sheet. The first setup question is not which feature is technically available; it is which actions you will use often enough to justify keeping them prominent.

Review S Pen controls with Settings search

Search Settings for S Pen and read each option’s current description. Depending on your software version, you may find controls for insertion or removal behavior, shortcuts, writing features, or button actions. The exact labels and paths are not established consistently across the available Samsung material, so use the controls displayed on your build rather than following a fixed path from an older guide.

Choose a small set of deliberate actions

  • Enable a shortcut only if you can remember when it is useful.
  • Turn off actions that trigger accidentally while the pen is stored or removed.
  • Test handwriting, selection, and button behavior with the screen locked and unlocked if those options are offered.
  • Check that any lock-screen note or shortcut behavior matches your privacy expectations.

After setup, remove and reinsert the pen once, then test the actions you kept. A setting that looks convenient in a menu is not useful if it interrupts normal handling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Review privacy and security without assuming launch defaults

Privacy and security belong in a first-setup checklist, but Samsung’s cited material does not establish S25 Ultra-specific defaults or a single current path for every security control. Regional manuals and carrier software can differ.

Use the phone’s own search as the authority

Search Settings for security and privacy, permissions, lock screen notifications, biometrics, and find device. Read the explanation attached to each control and confirm the result after saving it. If a label in your phone does not match a guide, follow the current regional Samsung manual or the on-device description instead of forcing the older path.

Questions worth answering before daily use

  • Can someone holding the locked phone read message previews or other sensitive alerts?
  • Which apps have access to the camera, microphone, location, contacts, and photos?
  • Do your chosen screen-lock and biometric methods work reliably without making emergency access difficult?
  • Could a lost phone be located, locked, or erased through the account and recovery tools you have enabled?

These are decision points, not claims about a particular default. Record any change that affects notifications or app behavior so you can undo it quickly.

8. A sensible first-day order

  1. Verify the build: record Android, One UI, and security-patch information.
  2. Set the lock screen: decide whether AOD and Now brief information belong on a locked display.
  3. Set display comfort: adjust brightness, motion, resolution, and eye-comfort controls one at a time.
  4. Measure before optimizing battery: inspect real usage and test only the controls related to the drain you observe.
  5. Choose camera defaults: match resolution and frame rate to your storage and sharing habits.
  6. Configure the S Pen: keep only shortcuts and actions you can explain and reproduce.
  7. Finish the privacy pass: inspect lock-screen previews, permissions, authentication, and lost-device options using your current software labels.

The result should be a phone that reflects your priorities rather than a copied list of “best” toggles. Samsung’s specifications describe what the S25 Ultra can do; your software version, environment, and habits determine which settings are worth keeping.
