If your Mac offers battery video-streaming optimization, it can also play HDR video in SDR to use less energy. Apple does not publish a Safari-specific percentage or number of minutes saved for these settings, so treat them as practical controls to try rather than guaranteed gains.
Use the narrowest setting that solves your problem: block autoplay on noisy or video-heavy sites, remove only extensions you no longer use, and reserve Low Power Mode for times when runtime matters more than peak performance.

Which Safari settings affect battery use?
Safari itself does not expose a “save 20% battery” switch. Energy use depends on what a page is doing: playing video, running scripts, displaying high-dynamic-range (HDR) content, or processing an extension’s work. The controls below target those activities at different levels.
| Control | Where it applies | What it changes | What Apple establishes | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Auto-Play | One website or the default for other websites | Stops media from starting automatically | Prevents unwanted playback; no quantified battery saving is published | Some sites may no longer start clips automatically |
| Safari extensions | Each installed extension | Turns off add-on code and features you do not need | Safari can warn when an extension slows browsing | You lose that extension’s functions |
| Low Power Mode | macOS, including Safari | Reduces overall energy use | Apple says it increases battery life by reducing energy use | Performance or background activity may be reduced |
| Battery video-streaming optimization | Supported Mac and supported playback situations | Plays HDR video in SDR while on battery | SDR requires less energy than HDR | Lower dynamic range; availability varies by Mac |
| Prevent cross-site tracking | Safari privacy behavior | Limits third-party tracking | Documented as a privacy feature, not a battery control | Some websites can behave differently |
Apple’s documentation does not provide a measured Safari battery result for the first two rows, nor a universal runtime increase for any particular Mac model. Your result will vary with display brightness, network conditions, page complexity, video resolution, and battery health.

Stop videos from autoplaying
Autoplay is the clearest Safari setting for preventing work you did not request. A page that starts a video can keep the decoder, audio path, graphics hardware, network connection, and screen active. Blocking autoplay avoids that activity when you are not intending to watch.
Set a rule for one website
- Open the website in Safari.
- Choose Safari > Settings > Websites.
- Select Auto-Play in the left-hand list.
- Find the site in the list and choose the behavior you want.
This site-specific rule is useful for a news page, social feed, or forum that launches clips you routinely skip while leaving autoplay unchanged elsewhere.
Set the default for other websites
- Choose Safari > Settings > Websites, then select Auto-Play.
- At the bottom of the site list, open When visiting other websites.
- Choose Never Auto-Play if you want Safari to wait for an explicit click before starting video.
Apple also provides Stop Media with Sound. That option blocks videos containing audio while allowing silent video to play. It is less strict than Never Auto-Play and can suit sites where muted previews are useful but unexpected sound is not.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Choice | Scope | Best when | What can still play |
|---|---|---|---|
| Never Auto-Play | One site or the “other websites” default | You want the strongest prevention of unsolicited playback | Video you start yourself |
| Stop Media with Sound | One site or the default | You want to suppress noisy clips but permit silent previews | Media without sound may autoplay |
These settings prevent unwanted playback; Apple does not attach a battery percentage or time estimate to either choice. If a site’s video is important, use the site-specific rule instead of weakening the global default.
If a site still plays media
- Check that you changed the rule for the correct website and that the site appears in the Auto-Play list.
- Remember that Stop Media with Sound is not the same as Never Auto-Play; silent clips can still start under the former.
- Reload the page after changing the rule. A video already loaded may need to be stopped or the tab reopened.
- For a site that changes behavior by subdomain, create the rule while visiting the exact address that misbehaves.
Review and disable unnecessary Safari extensions
Extensions add features such as content filtering, password handling, translation, or page modification. They can also perform work while pages load or change. Apple says Safari can warn you when an extension slows browsing and recommends checking installed extensions. A warning is a reason to investigate, not proof that the extension is causing battery drain.

Turn off extensions you do not use
- Choose Safari > Settings > Extensions.
- Review the installed list and identify extensions you no longer need, rarely use, or do not recognize.
- Turn off the checkbox or switch for an extension to disable it.
- Close and reopen affected tabs, then use Safari normally to see whether the unwanted behavior changes.
Disable one extension at a time when diagnosing a problem. That preserves a clear before-and-after comparison and avoids losing several useful features at once. If an extension is obsolete or unfamiliar, remove it using the option shown in the Extensions pane rather than leaving it enabled “just in case.”
Use Safari’s warning as a diagnostic clue
When Safari reports that an extension slows browsing, note which extension is named, turn it off, and check whether page loads or scrolling improve. Do not generalize the result to every extension: an add-on that is idle on your pages may have little effect, while another may do substantial work on script-heavy sites. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends turning extensions off when Safari does not work as expected, making this a useful fault-isolation step as well as a possible energy investigation.

If disabling an extension fixes a Safari feature you rely on, re-enable it and look for an update from its developer. You can also leave it disabled except when you need its function. If Safari remains slow after extensions are off, the cause may be the website, network, an outdated macOS release, or another system process; disabling extensions is not a guaranteed battery cure.
Enable Low Power Mode in macOS
Low Power Mode is the system-level control with the clearest Apple-supported battery claim. Apple says it reduces energy use to increase battery life. Because it applies to macOS rather than Safari alone, it can affect other apps and background activity while Safari is open.
- Open the Apple menu.
- Choose System Settings.
- Select Battery.
- Consider enabling Low Power Mode using the option shown for your Mac.
The exact choices and scheduling options depend on the Mac model, macOS version, and whether the Mac is running on battery or connected to power. If you need maximum performance for a demanding task, compare the result with Low Power Mode off; if staying unplugged is the priority, leave it enabled for that period.

Use Battery settings to inspect patterns
Battery settings include usage history that can show energy use over the last 24 hours or the last 10 days, depending on the view available on your Mac. Use that history to identify periods of heavy use and correlate them with video playback, many open tabs, or a long browsing session. It does not identify a particular Safari setting as the cause, but it gives you a record to consult after changing one setting at a time.

Optimize video streaming on battery when available
Apple describes an energy-saving video option for compatible Macs: while on battery, HDR video can be played in standard dynamic range (SDR), which requires less energy. This is not a Safari-only control and is not available in the same form on every Mac.
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery and look for the video-streaming optimization option presented for your hardware. If it is available and you value runtime more than HDR highlights and contrast, enable it for battery use. If you edit HDR footage, evaluate color-critical material, or want the full HDR appearance, leave the optimization off and accept the higher energy demand.
Whether the option appears can depend on the Mac, display, macOS version, and playback conditions. Do not assume that every HDR video in every browser will be converted, and do not treat SDR playback as a measured Safari saving; Apple’s statement is that SDR requires less energy.
Keep privacy settings separate from battery claims
Safari’s Prevent cross-site tracking feature limits third-party tracking. Apple documents it as a privacy control that restricts how trackers follow you between sites. The cited Apple guidance does not say that enabling it saves battery, so it should not be presented as a battery-life setting.

Enable the privacy control if limiting cross-site tracking is your goal, and be prepared for some websites to behave differently depending on their design and privacy requirements. If a sign-in flow, embedded checkout, or other site feature stops working, use Safari’s per-site privacy or website controls as appropriate rather than disabling every battery-related setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical order for trying the settings
Change the least disruptive control first and keep a note of what you changed. This makes it easier to decide whether a setting helped without attributing a battery change to the wrong cause.
- Block autoplay where it is wasteful. Start with a troublesome site; use Never Auto-Play globally only if unsolicited video is common across your browsing.
- Disable unneeded extensions. Leave essential tools enabled, but investigate any extension Safari says is slowing browsing.
- Enable Low Power Mode when unplugged. Use the Battery pane when runtime matters more than peak performance.
- Consider battery video optimization. If your Mac offers it, choose SDR playback on battery when reduced HDR quality is acceptable.
- Review usage history. Check the 24-hour or 10-day view available on your Mac and look for changes in your actual browsing pattern.
Do not expect a dramatic change from a single setting if your largest load is screen brightness, a video call, a large download, or another app. Safari controls can prevent avoidable work, but they cannot eliminate energy required for tasks you intentionally perform.
Common mistakes and fixes
Expecting a guaranteed percentage
Apple’s support pages do not publish a Safari-specific battery percentage, runtime gain, or laboratory result for autoplay or extension changes. Any number presented as universal would overstate the evidence. Judge the effect on your own Mac using consistent habits and Battery usage history.
Disabling every extension at once
This can hide which extension mattered and remove functions you need. Disable one, reload the relevant tabs, and restore it if there is no benefit.
Best Value
Using the wrong autoplay level
Stop Media with Sound still permits silent video. Choose Never Auto-Play when no automatic video is acceptable, and apply it only to selected sites if a global block is inconvenient.
Assuming Low Power Mode is Safari-only
Low Power Mode is a macOS Battery setting. It can influence system behavior beyond Safari, so check whether a performance-sensitive task is affected before leaving it on permanently.
Treating privacy protection as an energy guarantee
Prevent cross-site tracking addresses tracking, not documented battery savings. Keep the setting decision tied to privacy and site compatibility.
What to expect after changing Safari settings
The most defensible expectation is fewer unwanted activities: fewer videos beginning without a click, fewer extension operations, and lower system energy use when Low Power Mode is active. The size of any battery improvement depends on how often those activities would otherwise occur. A Mac that never encounters autoplay video may show little change, while a media-heavy browsing routine can avoid more unnecessary playback.
Because Apple does not quantify Safari-specific savings in the cited documentation, there is no supported “best setting” that guarantees a fixed number of extra hours. Apply the controls that match your browsing habits, retain the features you need, and use macOS Battery history to decide whether a change is worthwhile on your particular MacBook.
