Change the cleaning mode first. The Roomba Max 775 Combo can vacuum only, mop only, vacuum and mop simultaneously, or vacuum first and mop afterward. Choose the mode that matches the room and mess, then verify the saved map and room names before starting any wet-cleaning run. For a floor with loose crumbs followed by a wet pass, vacuum-first-then-mop is a sensible editorial choice—not a special manufacturer requirement.
1. Choose the cleaning mode before changing anything else
The Max 775 Combo has four modes. They are not minor variations of one program: each changes whether the robot collects dry debris, dispenses water, or performs both jobs in sequence. Picking the right mode has a larger effect on the result than experimenting with secondary preferences.

| Mode | Best fit | What the robot does | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vacuum only | Carpet, rugs, hard floors with dry dirt, crumbs, hair or dust | Collects dry debris without a mopping pass | It will not wet-clean the floor |
| Mop only | Hard floors that are already reasonably free of loose debris | Performs a wet mopping pass without a preceding vacuum cycle | Do not use it as a substitute for removing heavy dry debris first |
| Vacuum and mop | Routine maintenance on rooms needing both jobs at once | Vacuuming and mopping happen during the same run | iRobot says the robot automatically avoids carpets in this mode |
| Vacuum first then mop | Rooms where dry debris should be removed before wet cleaning | Completes a vacuum pass and follows it with a mopping pass | Check the map and room labels before starting; do not assume behavior that iRobot has not explicitly documented for every surface |
iRobot’s product FAQ describes the choices this way: “Your robot has 4 cleaning modes: vacuum only, mop only, both at the same time, or vacuum first then mop.”

When vacuum only is the right first choice
Select vacuum only when the priority is dry pickup. It is the straightforward option for carpeted rooms, entryways full of grit, pet hair, crumbs around a dining table, or any area where adding moisture would be counterproductive. It is also a useful first run after a spill has dried but before you decide whether the hard floor needs a separate mop cycle.

When mop only makes sense
Mop only is suited to a hard floor that has little loose material left on it. If you select it in a room containing crumbs, litter or tracked-in grit, the robot is being asked to wet-clean before those particles are collected. Remove conspicuous debris manually or run vacuum only first when that is the actual need.
When simultaneous vacuuming and mopping is efficient
Vacuum-and-mop is the maintenance setting for a room that needs both kinds of cleaning during one visit. It avoids the extra scheduling decision of two separate runs. iRobot specifically states that the robot automatically avoids carpets in vacuum-and-mop mode, so this is the safer combined option when a mapped area includes hard flooring alongside carpet.
Why vacuum-first-then-mop is often the practical compromise
For a kitchen or dining area with dry crumbs followed by footprints or light grime, vacuum first then mop keeps the wet pass from dragging loose particles across the floor. That recommendation is editorial guidance based on the sequence itself, not a claim that iRobot requires this mode or that it outperforms the others in laboratory testing. The available product information does not provide comparative test results between modes.

2. Check the map and room names before a wet run
Before choosing mop only, vacuum-and-mop, or the sequential option, open the Roomba Home App and inspect the saved map. Confirm that the rooms you intend to clean are present, named correctly and shaped as you expect. A wrong room label or an incomplete map can send a wet-capable run into an area you meant to exclude, regardless of which mode you selected.

The Max 775 Combo uses ClearView Pro LiDAR and PrecisionVision AI to scan the home. iRobot’s product information says it can create up to five maps and automatically name rooms in the Roomba Home App. Multiple maps are useful in a multi-level home, but they also make it important to verify that the active map represents the floor where the robot is sitting.
What carpet avoidance does—and does not—mean
iRobot’s FAQ says: “And it automatically avoids carpets in vac + mop or mop cleaning modes, no need to stress over extra mess.” That is a manufacturer statement about those named modes. It should not be expanded into a blanket guarantee for every possible map, floor transition or software condition. For the vacuum-first-then-mop choice, inspect the map and room boundaries before pressing start rather than relying on an assumption about how the sequential run will treat every carpeted section.
If room names look wrong
Do not invent a tap sequence from another Roomba model. The product information confirms map creation and room auto-naming, but it does not document exact, tap-by-tap paths for changing every preference. Use the controls currently shown in your version of the Roomba Home App, and verify the result on the map before launching a wet cycle.
3. Use the map as a boundary check, not as a replacement for preparation
A map tells the robot how the home is divided; it does not remove objects that can interfere with cleaning. Before a first mop run, look for cables, toys, clothing, pet bowls and other loose items that could obstruct the route or become wet. Keep the robot’s starting area accessible so it can leave and return to the dock.

Because up to five maps may be stored, check the active floor when moving the robot between levels. A map created on one floor cannot describe the boundaries on another. If the app shows a pause, an incomplete run or an unexpected room selection, resolve that state in the app before changing cleaning modes repeatedly.
4. Understand what the AutoWash Dock changes for you
The AutoWash Dock is part of the cleaning system rather than a mode-selection preference. According to iRobot’s product page, it empties the robot’s debris, washes and dries the roller mop, and refills the robot with clean water mixed with StayClean Mopping Concentrate. Those functions are intended to reduce hands-on work between wet runs.
Prepare the water system
Check that the dock’s water tanks are seated correctly and contain what the app or dock indicates is needed before starting a mop cycle. The published information mentions StayClean Mopping Concentrate but does not establish exact compatible replacement stock-keeping units. Do not substitute an accessory solely because its container looks similar; verify compatibility for this model through current iRobot documentation.

5. Know what normal navigation looks like
iRobot’s Max 700 Series support information says the robot cleans in neat rows and returns to recharge when needed. That behavior can make a run look slower or more deliberate than random-looking coverage, especially in a large room. Let the robot complete its navigation cycle before concluding that the selected mode failed.
The same support material says the robot may end cleaning after 90 minutes of inactivity while it is off the dock. If it appears to have stopped, check the Roomba Home App to determine whether it is finished, paused or waiting for another condition. Do not immediately start a second run without checking the status, because that can create duplicate work or an unexpected wet pass.
Rows, recharging and unfinished rooms
- Neat rows: A systematic path is expected operation, not evidence that the robot is stuck.
- Recharge: Returning to the dock during a larger job is part of the stated behavior; consult the app for the run’s status.
- Inactivity: A robot that has been off the dock without activity for 90 minutes may end cleaning, according to the Max 700 Series support page.
6. Change only the setting that answers your actual cleaning problem
There is no evidence that every owner should alter a long list of preferences. Start with the mode, then adjust your plan only when the room presents a specific issue. This keeps the first run interpretable: if the floor is dry but still dirty, you know whether the problem came from the selected mode, the map or the physical condition of the room.

Use vacuum only when loose material is the main problem. If you still want a wet pass, schedule or start the sequential vacuum-first-then-mop mode after confirming the map.

For light daily maintenance
Vacuum-and-mop can cover a mapped hard-floor area in one visit. Its stated automatic carpet avoidance is useful when the same mapped cleaning area contains carpets and hard flooring.
For a floor that is already clear
Mop only avoids spending a separate vacuum cycle on a room that does not need dry pickup. It remains a wet-cleaning mode, so use it only where the floor surface and map are ready for moisture.
7. Troubleshoot by symptom instead of changing modes at random
The robot mopped an area you did not expect
- Pause or stop the run using the controls available in the Roomba Home App.
- Check which saved map is active and whether the room name matches the physical floor.
- Review the room selection and boundaries before starting another wet-capable mode.
- Remember that iRobot’s explicit carpet-avoidance statement covers mop and simultaneous vacuum-and-mop modes; do not assume an undocumented boundary rule for another sequence.
The robot appears to have stopped
- Open the app and identify whether the run is finished, paused, charging or waiting.
- Check whether it has been inactive away from the dock for the 90-minute period described in Max 700 Series support information.
- Clear any visible obstruction around the robot and its route, then resume only after the status is understood.
The floor still has dry debris after mopping
Check whether Mop only was selected. That mode does not provide the preceding dry-pickup step that vacuum-first-then-mop is intended to provide. For the next run, remove heavy debris manually or choose a mode that includes vacuuming.
The wet-cleaning result is inconsistent
Verify that the dock’s tanks are installed and supplied as required, that the active map is correct, and that the roller and charging area are not obstructed. Do not infer a hardware failure solely from one incomplete run; first check the app’s status and the selected mode.
8. Keep the robot maintained; these are care tasks, not cleaning preferences
iRobot’s product guidance separates basic care from mode selection. Regular upkeep helps the robot perform the job you selected, but none of these tasks replaces choosing the correct mode.
- Robot bin: Wipe it as part of routine care.
- Dock water tanks: Rinse them as advised by the product guidance.
- Charging contacts: Clean them so the robot can dock and recharge reliably.
- Brushes: Clean them to remove accumulated hair and debris.
- Filter: Change it every 3–6 months, following the product guidance and your household’s actual dirt load.
These intervals are care guidance, not a performance guarantee. A home with heavy shedding, construction dust or frequent wet runs may require more frequent inspection even when the published replacement window has not elapsed.
9. A sensible first-run sequence
- Identify the room’s dominant need. Decide whether it needs dry pickup, wet cleaning, both together or dry pickup before wet cleaning.
- Select one of the four modes. Use vacuum only, mop only, vacuum-and-mop, or vacuum first then mop according to that need.
- Inspect the active map. Confirm the floor, room names and boundaries in the Roomba Home App.
- Check wet-cleaning readiness. Make sure the dock and water system are prepared before a mop-capable run.
- Clear obvious obstacles. Remove loose objects and keep the path to the dock open.
- Start the run and monitor status. Expect neat rows and possible recharging; use the app if the robot appears paused.
- Perform routine care afterward. Attend to the bin, tanks, contacts, brushes and filter on the published schedule.
The key is restraint: change the mode that solves the immediate cleaning problem, verify the map before introducing water, and use the app to interpret normal navigation behavior. The product information does not support a universal list of additional settings that every Max 775 Combo owner must change.
