Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For an older television with an HDMI input, the Roku Streaming Stick 4K is the clearest current choice. It connects directly to HDMI, sends video at the resolution the television supports, and includes a voice remote with TV power, volume, and mute controls on most TVs. A 4K player will stream to an older HD set, but it cannot make that set display 4K.
First inspect the back or side of the television. HDMI is the deciding compatibility check. If the set has only the yellow, red, and white composite sockets, current Roku guidance does not establish a guaranteed direct connection or a supported converter setup, so the buying decision is different.

The short answer: choose by the TV’s input first
Roku Support says its streaming players can be connected to any television with an HDMI connection. That makes the input panel more important than the television’s age, brand, or whether its screen is labeled HD. A set from many years ago can still be a suitable Roku display if it has an available HDMI input and a way to reach your network.
- HDMI television: Start with the Roku Streaming Stick 4K (model 3820R2), the current product candidate that best fits this use case.
- HDMI television that is only 720p or 1080p: The stick will output the television’s supported HD resolution. Paying for a 4K feature does not upgrade the panel.
- Composite-only television: Do not assume a current Roku will plug into the yellow, red, and white sockets. Roku’s current support information is HDMI-based, and a converter path is not established as guaranteed.
- No reliable home internet: Fix the network situation before buying. Roku setup requires Wi-Fi or a compatible Ethernet adapter as well as a video connection.
This approach avoids the most common mistake: comparing 4K labels and remote features before checking whether the television can accept the player at all.

How to check an older TV before you compare Roku models
1. Look for an HDMI input
Turn the television around or inspect its side panel. Look for a small, flat connector labeled HDMI IN, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, or a similar input label. The connector may be beside other sockets and may face downward on a wall-mounted set. You need an input, not an HDMI output intended to send sound or video elsewhere.
A Roku Streaming Stick is designed to plug directly into that HDMI port. If the port is already occupied, you can move the existing cable when using Roku or use an HDMI switch, but the basic compatibility decision remains the same: the television must accept HDMI video.
2. Identify composite-only connections
Older sets may have three round sockets colored yellow, white, and red. Yellow carries composite video; white and red carry left and right analog audio. Those sockets are not HDMI. If they are the only video inputs, the current Roku recommendation for HDMI televisions does not automatically apply.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRoku’s legacy product-comparison document shows composite A/V on older equipment, but that document does not establish that a current composite-output Roku is sold or supported. Treat an HDMI-to-composite converter as an unverified troubleshooting route, not as a guaranteed purchase plan.
3. Note the screen’s supported resolution
Check the television’s manual, information screen, or label for terms such as 720p, 1080p, HD, or 4K. This does not determine whether Roku works; HDMI does. It determines what you will actually see. Roku states that 4K and HDR playback require a compatible television, and the Streaming Stick 4K otherwise matches the TV’s supported resolution, such as HD.
Current Roku choices for an older television
The models below are separated by connection, generation, and what Roku has actually established about them. Availability matters: a technically suitable older model is not necessarily a sensible purchase if Roku no longer sells it.

Why the Streaming Stick 4K is the leading pick
It matches the compatibility requirement
The strongest documented reason to choose the Streaming Stick 4K is simple: it is an HDMI device for an HDMI television. Roku identifies model 3820R2 and says the player sends output according to the TV’s supported resolution. That makes it suitable for an older set without pretending the set has modern panel capabilities.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Its 4K label is not a requirement
“4K” describes what the player and a compatible display can handle; it is not a requirement that your old television be 4K. On an HD set, the television remains the limiting component and the image is delivered at that set’s supported HD resolution. You should therefore buy it for HDMI compatibility, current product status, and the control features—not because the old panel will suddenly gain four times as many pixels.
The remote can reduce input switching
The included voice remote has buttons for TV power, volume, and mute. Roku qualifies that these controls work with most televisions, not every model. If controlling those functions from one remote is important, check that expectation before purchase and keep the original TV remote available for a set the Roku remote does not control fully.
When the Express 4K+ still comes up in searches
The Express 4K+ is relevant because it was a documented HDMI-compatible player, not because it is the best new purchase. Roku’s Express 4K+ support page says, “Yes, it will work with any TV that has an HDMI® port.” The same support material covers Wi-Fi or a compatible Ethernet adapter and setup power requirements.
Roku’s current product information says the Express 4K+ is no longer available for purchase and identifies the Streaming Stick Plus (4K) as the updated comparable choice for 2025. That makes the Express 4K+ a previous-generation reference point. If you already own one, HDMI compatibility remains useful; if you are shopping now, do not mistake old listings or leftover stock for Roku’s current top recommendation.

What to do if the television has no HDMI
Understand the evidence limit
For a composite-only television, the safe answer is not “buy any HDMI-to-composite cable.” A cable cannot be treated as a proven solution merely because the plugs look physically adaptable. The current Roku support guidance reviewed for this topic establishes HDMI connections, while the older comparison document only records composite A/V on legacy equipment.

Use a converter only as an unverified experiment
An HDMI-to-composite converter may appear to offer a path, but compatibility with a current Roku is not guaranteed by the cited Roku guidance. The converter would become an additional device to power, connect, and troubleshoot, and the exact model would determine whether the setup works. Do not buy a current Roku on the assumption that any inexpensive adapter will solve an analog-only television.
Make the decision before ordering
- Confirm that the television truly has no HDMI input, including a side or downward-facing port.
- Record the exact model of the television and the available yellow, white, and red sockets.
- Ask the seller or manufacturer of any proposed converter to confirm support for the specific Roku output and television format; do not infer support from a generic product title.
- If no verified converter path is available, treat the television as incompatible with the current HDMI-based Roku choices rather than purchasing first and troubleshooting later.
Step-by-step setup on an older HDMI television
Step 1: Prepare the television and network
Place the Roku where its HDMI connection and power lead can reach without bending the connectors. Have the home Wi-Fi password ready. Roku setup guidance also allows a compatible Ethernet adapter on supported players, so a wired network can be considered when Wi-Fi is not practical. Network access is required in addition to the HDMI picture connection.
Step 2: Connect the player to HDMI
Insert the Streaming Stick 4K directly into an open HDMI input. Note the input number printed beside the socket. If you are setting up an Express-style player instead, connect its HDMI cable between the player and the television’s HDMI input.

Step 3: Provide power correctly
Connect the player using the power arrangement supplied with it and follow the device’s setup instructions. Roku’s Express 4K setup guidance recommends using the wall adapter for best performance rather than relying on an uncertain USB power source. This recommendation is specifically documented for Express 4K; do not assume that every Roku model has identical power requirements.
Step 4: Select the matching TV input
Turn on the television and use the TV remote’s Input, Source, or similar button to select the HDMI number used in Step 2. A blank screen on the wrong input does not indicate that the Roku is incompatible.
Step 5: Complete the on-screen network setup
Choose Wi-Fi and enter the network credentials, or use a compatible Ethernet adapter where the player supports one. Keep the player within reliable network reach during setup. If the network is not available, the HDMI connection alone will not provide streaming service.

Step 6: Test the remote controls
After setup, test power, volume, and mute from the Roku voice remote. Roku says these TV controls work with most televisions, so a set that does not respond to one or more buttons may simply be outside that compatibility range. Retain the original remote for functions the Roku remote cannot operate.
What resolution should you expect?
Resolution follows the television, not the age of the Roku player. An older 720p or 1080p television will show HD output even when the player is labeled 4K. Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K product information describes output that matches the TV’s supported resolution when 4K/HDR conditions are not met.
- HD television: Expect the set’s supported HD format. A 4K stick does not convert the panel into a 4K display.
- 4K television with compatible HDR capability: The player can use 4K/HDR playback when the display and content meet the requirements.
- Unclear television specification: Use the TV manual or its information menu. Do not select a Roku solely on the assumption that an older screen supports 4K.
The practical benefit of the 4K model for an HD owner is compatibility with the HDMI setup and current product line, not a promise of higher resolution on the old screen.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Network and power requirements that are easy to miss
Internet connection
The television’s HDMI port carries the picture from the Roku, but it does not supply internet access. Setup requires Wi-Fi or a compatible Ethernet adapter, depending on the player. Check that the intended installation location can reach the home network and that you know the correct password before beginning.
Power source
A player that loses power can appear to have a video or network fault. Follow the supplied power instructions. For Express 4K, Roku’s support guidance recommends the wall adapter for best performance. If an Express unit behaves inconsistently while powered from another source, move it to the recommended wall adapter before replacing other equipment.
Remote expectations
The Streaming Stick 4K remote includes TV power, volume, and mute controls, but Roku’s qualification is “most TVs.” That wording matters for older or unusual sets: streaming control may work even if one TV-control button does not. The Roku player itself can still be usable while you keep the original remote for the missing function.

Troubleshooting by symptom
“No signal” or a blank screen
- Confirm that the television is on the HDMI input number used by the Roku.
- Reseat the stick or HDMI cable so it is fully inserted.
- Check that the player has power using the supplied arrangement.
- Try another HDMI input on the television if one is available.
These checks distinguish a wrong source or power issue from a genuine compatibility problem.
The picture appears, but it is not 4K
That is expected on an HD television. The player follows the resolution the display supports. The 4K label on the Roku does not override the panel’s capabilities.
Setup cannot find the network
- Recheck the Wi-Fi name and password.
- Move the player or network equipment to improve the connection path.
- Consider a compatible Ethernet adapter if the specific player supports one and a wired connection is preferable.
Do not treat an HDMI picture as proof that internet setup is complete; video connection and network connection are separate requirements.
The Roku remote does not change TV volume or power
Roku documents those controls as working with most TVs, not all TVs. Test the original television remote to confirm that the set itself responds, then continue using it for unsupported controls. This limitation does not necessarily prevent streaming from the Roku.
An Express 4K unit is unstable
Use the wall adapter recommended in Roku’s Express 4K setup guidance and verify the HDMI connection. If the unit is being purchased secondhand, remember that Roku identifies Express 4K+ as no longer available for purchase, so seller claims about current availability should not be confused with Roku’s current product status.
Which model fits each older-TV situation?
| Your television and priorities | Most sensible direction | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI input, ordinary HD screen, want a current player | Roku Streaming Stick 4K | Documented HDMI compatibility and output that follows the TV’s supported resolution. |
| HDMI input, already own an Express 4K+ | Keep using it if it works | Roku Support confirms HDMI-TV compatibility, but Roku says the model is no longer available for purchase. |
| HDMI input, comparing the newer Plus line | Review the 2025 Streaming Stick Plus (4K) as an alternative | Roku identifies it as the updated comparable choice to Express 4K+, while the Streaming Stick 4K has the clearest documented fit in this guide. |
| Composite-only input | Pause before buying | No current, supported analog-output Roku path is established here; any converter would need independent verification. |
| HDMI input but no usable Wi-Fi | Plan network access first | Roku setup requires Wi-Fi or a compatible Ethernet adapter in addition to HDMI. |
Buying checklist
Use this checklist at the point of purchase rather than relying on the television’s age or the word “4K” in a listing.
- There is a free HDMI input on the television.
- The television’s supported resolution is known, so expectations are realistic.
- Wi-Fi is available, or a compatible Ethernet adapter is planned.
- The outlet and supplied power arrangement can be reached safely.
- TV power and volume control from the Roku remote are desirable, with the understanding that Roku says they work with most TVs.
- The exact model is identified. A listing for Express 4K+ should be treated as a previous-generation item because Roku says it is no longer available for purchase.
- A composite-only set is not being treated as automatically compatible through an unverified converter.
Bottom line for an older TV
Check the input panel before comparing anything else. If the television has HDMI, the Roku Streaming Stick 4K is the strongest current pick: it connects directly, works with an older HD display by matching that display’s resolution, and offers TV power, volume, and mute controls on most televisions. Confirm network access and power before setup.
If the set has only composite inputs, current Roku guidance does not provide a guaranteed direct solution. Legacy composite information should not be mistaken for a currently supported product. In that situation, proceed only with a converter path that has been independently verified for the exact television and Roku, or recognize that the current HDMI-based models are not a straightforward fit.
