Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart with the safest sequence: install available updates, select a built-in operating mode, turn on Real-Time Monitor, and then change one game or battery setting at a time. Use Performance as the default balance, Silent when unplugged battery life and lower fan noise matter most, and Turbo when frame rate is the priority—especially while connected to wall power.
These are starting points, not universal “best settings.” The right profile depends on the game, frame-rate target, image-quality tolerance, fan noise, and whether the ROG Xbox Ally X is plugged in.

The first settings to change
Do the following before changing individual graphics options. This order gives you a current software base, a predictable power profile, and measurements that show whether a change actually helped.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Install updates. Press the Command Center button, open Armoury Crate SE, select Settings, then Update Center. Check every item listed. Also allow Windows and the Xbox app to install their own updates; either may update automatically or display a prompt. Graphics-driver updates can include optimizations for newer games.
- Choose an operating mode. Open Command Center and select Operating Mode. Begin with Performance unless you have a clear reason to favor battery life or maximum power.
- Enable measurement. In Command Center, tap Real-Time Monitor. Leave it visible for a few minutes in the game you are tuning so you can see frame rate, CPU and GPU utilization, temperature, and battery level.
- Tune only the affected game. If the frame rate is below your target, reduce the most demanding in-game settings first. Test the result, including motion and image clarity, before making another change.
- Apply battery changes only when needed. For longer unplugged sessions, try Silent or Performance, a lower frame cap, reduced brightness, disabled lighting, or CPU Boost turned off. Each saves power by giving up some performance, brightness, or visual effects.
On RC73 models, the Command Center button opens Armoury Crate SE, so these two interfaces are the main control points for updates, modes, monitoring, and handheld-specific options.

Which operating mode should you use?
Operating Mode changes the power available to the processor and graphics hardware, along with heat, fan behavior, and battery drain. ASUS describes Performance as the balance, Silent as the lower-power option, and Turbo as the full-power mode. Treat the descriptions as guidance rather than a guarantee for every game.
| Mode | Best starting use | What to expect | When to avoid it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silent | Unplugged play, lighter games, quiet rooms | Lower power use and less fan noise; frame rate may fall in demanding games | When the game already struggles to meet your target frame rate |
| Performance | Everyday play and a first test profile | A compromise between performance and battery life | When you need the longest possible session or the highest available frame rate |
| Turbo | Demanding games and high frame-rate targets | Maximum power among the presets, with more heat, fan noise, and battery consumption | Long unplugged sessions or when noise and temperature are more important than speed |
Connecting the Ally X to wall power can provide additional power in Turbo. Use Turbo as a deliberate choice for a demanding title or a high refresh-rate display, not as a permanent default if you usually play away from an outlet.
Why Manual Mode should wait
Manual Mode exposes advanced APU power limits and fan speeds. Those limits apply over different time windows, and Armoury Crate SE uses separate behavior for plugged-in and unplugged profiles. A small change can therefore affect sustained performance, heat, and noise in ways that are difficult to predict. Leave Manual Mode alone until Real-Time Monitor identifies a specific problem that a preset cannot address, and change one control at a time.
How to use Real-Time Monitor while tuning
Real-Time Monitor is a diagnostic overlay, not a performance booster. Start it from Command Center > Real-Time Monitor, launch the game, and observe a repeatable section such as a crowded area or a short practice route.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- FPS: Check the sustained rate and the drops, not just the highest number displayed. A steady lower cap can feel better than a fluctuating peak.
- GPU use: A GPU near full utilization usually means resolution or graphics quality is the limiting factor. Lowering a heavy visual setting or rendering resolution is the logical next test.
- CPU use: High CPU utilization can make a processor-heavy game or simulation stutter. Lowering crowd, view-distance, simulation, or physics settings may help more than reducing texture quality.
- Temperature: Rising temperature and fan speed are expected in Turbo. If performance falls after a long session, compare the same scene in Performance and check airflow around the handheld.
- Battery level: Watch the rate of decline over the same short test. Do not infer a full-session runtime from a few percentage points.
Record the mode, frame cap, resolution, and key graphics settings for each test. Without a consistent scene and profile, a change in a game’s menu can appear better simply because the next scene was easier to render.
How to improve frame rate without ruining image quality
Lower the settings that cost the most
When a game misses its target, begin with settings that have a large rendering cost and a small effect on readability. Depending on the game, these can include shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, ambient occlusion, view distance, crowd density, and post-processing. Keep texture quality higher when video memory allows; textures often affect sharpness more than frame rate. Apply one change, replay the same section, and compare both the overlay and the picture.
Use FSR when the game provides it
FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) is an in-game option. Select it in the game’s graphics menu when available, then choose a quality level that meets your frame-rate target without making fine text or edges visibly soft. FSR support and naming differ by game, so a setting that looks clean in one title may show shimmer or blur in another.
Consider RSR for games without FSR
Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) is a driver-level alternative for a game that lacks FSR. Configure the game to render below the Ally X’s native resolution, then enable RSR through the available Command Center or graphics-driver control. RSR cannot add game-specific reconstruction information, so compare its clarity and motion against a native-resolution low preset. Disable it if the game has its own upscaler that looks better.

Set a sensible frame cap
Use the game’s frame-limit control or Command Center > FPS Limit. A cap slightly below the display’s refresh target can reduce unnecessary rendering and make frame pacing more consistent. If the game never reaches the cap, lowering it further will not fix the underlying bottleneck; return to the graphics settings and use the Real-Time Monitor readings to find the cause.
| Choice | Where it is configured | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| In-game graphics preset | Game’s graphics or video menu | Frame rate, texture detail, shadows, and clarity |
| FSR | Game’s graphics menu | Supported modes, edge stability, text sharpness, and motion |
| RSR | Driver or Command Center controls, with the game below native resolution | Upscaling artifacts versus the game’s native-resolution image |
| FPS Limit | Game menu or Command Center | Consistency, heat, battery drain, and responsiveness |
Which settings extend battery life?
Battery tuning is a series of measured compromises rather than a single switch. Start with the least disruptive change and stop when the game still feels smooth.
| Adjustment | Path or control | Likely benefit | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch to Silent | Command Center > Operating Mode > Silent | Lower power use and fan noise | Less performance in demanding games |
| Use Performance instead of Turbo | Command Center > Operating Mode | Reduced power and heat while retaining more speed than Silent | Lower peak frame rate than Turbo |
| Lower the FPS cap | Game graphics menu or Command Center FPS Limit | Stops the hardware rendering frames you do not need | Fewer frames and potentially less responsiveness |
| Reduce screen brightness | Command Center brightness slider | Lower display power draw | A dimmer image, especially outdoors |
| Disable RGB lighting | Lighting controls in Armoury Crate SE | Small additional saving and fewer distractions | No lighting effects |
| Turn off CPU Boost | Armoury Crate SE > Settings > Performance > Eco Assist | Can improve efficiency in easier-running games | May slightly reduce performance in demanding games |
CPU Boost is most attractive when the game is not CPU-limited. If the overlay shows sustained CPU saturation or the title loses frames after disabling it, turn the feature back on. Likewise, brightness and lighting changes help only if their visual trade-offs are acceptable in your environment.
How updates and game launchers affect setup
Keep Windows, Armoury Crate SE, graphics drivers, and the Xbox app current before diagnosing a game. Menu names can move after updates, so if a path no longer matches, search the current Armoury Crate SE settings rather than installing an unofficial utility.

The Xbox full-screen interface can launch games from Windows and other storefronts. Windows support includes Steam, Epic Games, and Battle.net libraries, while most Xbox Play Anywhere titles are designed to support cloud saves and syncing. Cloud or remote streaming can reduce local rendering load and may save battery, but the result depends on network quality, service access, and stream settings; it is not a guaranteed efficiency gain.
How to reach the Windows desktop
- Swipe up from the bottom edge to open Task Switcher.
- Select Windows Desktop for Windows Settings, file management, driver tools, or launcher maintenance.
- To return, use the Xbox app’s Xbox Full Screen control.
- ASUS notes that a restart is needed to return without background processes; re-entry without those optimizations is also available when you do not restart.
Routine mode, overlay, brightness, and frame-limit changes do not require the desktop, so staying in the handheld interface reduces accidental changes to Windows services.

Frame rate fell after changing mode
Return to the previous preset, confirm that the game did not reset its resolution or upscaler, and replay the same test scene. A lower mode can expose a CPU or GPU limit that was hidden by Turbo; it is not evidence that every game needs Turbo.
The image is blurry after enabling an upscaler
Raise the FSR quality level, test native resolution with a lower graphics preset, or disable RSR. Check small text, foliage, and moving edges rather than judging only a still screenshot.

The overlay shows good FPS but play still stutters
Look for frame-time spikes, shader compilation, background updates, or a changing game scene. Cap the frame rate to a level the device can sustain, finish pending updates, and repeat the test after the game has built its shaders.
Turbo is hot or loud
Switch to Performance, lower the frame cap, or reduce a heavy graphics setting. Keep vents clear and test again; additional fan noise is an expected trade-off for Turbo’s higher power target.
Battery drains faster than expected
Check brightness, RGB lighting, frame cap, operating mode, and whether CPU Boost is enabled. Streaming, downloads, and launcher updates can also consume power. Compare percentage loss over the same game section instead of relying on a single runtime estimate.

How to create a reliable per-game profile
- Choose a target such as stable 30, 40, 60, or a display-appropriate higher rate.
- Start in Performance with native resolution and the game’s default preset.
- Use Real-Time Monitor through a repeatable section and note FPS, utilization, temperature, and battery decline.
- Change the largest visible bottleneck—usually a heavy effect, resolution, upscaler, or frame cap—not several options at once.
- Repeat the same section and keep the change only if clarity and frame pacing remain acceptable.
- Save separate plugged-in and unplugged profiles when Armoury Crate SE presents them, because the same game can need different power and noise priorities.
This approach prevents a fast but blurry profile from being mistaken for an improvement and makes it easy to undo a change that fails in a later level.
Battery and expansion facts worth keeping in context
The ROG Xbox Ally X is listed with an 80Wh battery. ASUS’s product-page claim of “up to 2X battery life” compares an ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA, Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 80Wh) with an ROG Ally X (RC72LA, Ryzen Z1 Extreme, 80Wh) while running Hollow Knight: Silksong at 720p, a 60 FPS limit, low graphics, and Silent mode. That manufacturer test does not predict a doubled runtime in every game or setting.
If storage, rather than performance, is your constraint, the device can use a standard M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 SSD. Verify the exact fit, backup procedure, and installation requirements for your model before opening the handheld. For desk or TV play, ASUS recommends the ROG Bulwark Dock (2025) DG300 or another dock rated for 130W; a dock is optional and not required for any setting in this guide.
Quick Recap
A quick first-session checklist
