Which Resident Evil Games Should You Play Before Resident Evil Requiem?

Short answer: none are required. Capcom says Resident Evil Requiem is built so someone who has never played the series, or knows nothing about the Raccoon City Incident, can start immediately. If you want one optional game first, choose the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2. It provides the clearest background for Leon S. Kennedy and Raccoon City, the two most direct links to Requiem. Add the 2020 Resident Evil 3 remake for more city history. Consider Resident Evil Outbreak only if you want the deeper Ashcroft-family connection; it is not required.

Can you start Resident Evil Requiem without playing the older games?

Yes. You can begin Resident Evil Requiem as your first Resident Evil game without missing information that Capcom considers essential. In its October 29, 2025 story recap, Capcom wrote: “Even if you haven’t played a Resident Evil game before, you can jump right in, though long-time fans will notice plenty of familiar touches through the game.” Read the recap on the PlayStation Blog.

Director Koshi Nakanishi gave the same guidance in a January 29, 2026 interview: “The game is designed to be welcoming to complete newcomers who don’t know anything about the Raccoon City Incident or haven’t played any Resident Evil titles before.” That interview is available on the PlayStation Blog.

Previous games therefore function as optional context, not homework. The practical choice is whether you want to recognize returning characters, understand the history of the city, or explore a family connection that longtime players may notice.

  • Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.

The best preparation paths at a glance

Your goal What to play Why
Start with the least preparation Nothing Official guidance says newcomers can begin with Requiem.
Play one game for the most relevant context Resident Evil 2 (2019 remake) It introduces Leon and Claire during the Raccoon City events, directly matching Requiem’s setting and Leon connection.
Get a broader Raccoon City background Resident Evil 2 remake, then Resident Evil 3 remake The two remakes cover different perspectives on the same city-wide catastrophe.
Investigate Grace’s family history Resident Evil Outbreak or Outbreak File #2 The Ashcroft family returns from the Outbreak series, but the games are not necessary to follow Grace.
Follow the most recent major character arc Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, then Resident Evil Village They complete Ethan Winters’ storyline and provide wider franchise context, rather than direct preparation for the Raccoon City investigation.
Study the entire history The original Resident Evil and the wider series Useful for completionists, but no full-series run is required.

Why Resident Evil 2 (2019) is the strongest single pick

If you want to play exactly one earlier title, make it the modern remake of Resident Evil 2. This is an editorial recommendation based on the documented connections, not a Capcom prerequisite.

Requiem returns to Raccoon City and investigates the truth behind the Raccoon City Incident. Its official PlayStation listing identifies Leon S. Kennedy as one of the protagonists and describes him as a survivor of that incident. Capcom’s series recap identifies Resident Evil 2 as one of the entries that brought the action directly into Raccoon City through Leon and Claire. Those facts make the remake the most efficient way to become familiar with the setting and to recognize Leon’s earlier role. See the character and setting details on the official PlayStation page and Capcom’s series recap.

The remake is also a sensible choice for a newcomer who wants a contemporary presentation rather than an older control scheme. That accessibility point does not make it mandatory; it simply makes the game a clear, focused introduction to the particular history that Requiem revisits.

What Resident Evil 3 adds

Play the 2020 remake of Resident Evil 3 after Resident Evil 2 if you want more context about the Raccoon City disaster. Capcom discusses the second and third games together as entries that moved the action into the city itself. The third game broadens your understanding of the crisis beyond the perspective supplied by Resident Evil 2.

Resident Evil 7 biohazard Gold Edition - PlayStation 5
  • FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
  • DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
  • A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
  • NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

There is no official statement that Resident Evil 3 is needed before Requiem. Treat it as an optional second stop, not the next gate in a required sequence. If your available time is limited, stop after the Resident Evil 2 remake and start Requiem.

Where Outbreak fits—and why it is a deep cut

Resident Evil Outbreak and Outbreak File #2 are relevant for a specific reason: producer Masato Kumazawa says the Ashcroft family returns from the Outbreak series. Requiem introduces Grace Ashcroft, and the official PlayStation description identifies her mother as Alyssa Ashcroft, a Raccoon City Incident survivor and reporter who continued investigating Umbrella.

Kumazawa explained that the team wanted a protagonist with a personal connection to the ruined city while keeping Grace distinct from established heroes such as Leon and Chris. He described the game as continuing “the overarching narrative rooted in Raccoon City and the secret machinations of the Umbrella Corporation.” Read the full producer interview on the PlayStation Blog.

That family history gives longtime fans a reason to revisit Outbreak, but the interview does not say that playing either Outbreak title is necessary to understand Grace. Availability can also vary by platform, region and edition, so verify that you can legally access the version you want before planning a playthrough. For a first-time player, Outbreak is enrichment rather than preparation.

  • TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
  • RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
  • NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

Should you play Resident Evil 7 and Village first?

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village are worthwhile if your priority is the recent Ethan Winters storyline. Nakanishi describes those two games as the arc that follows Ethan and says that arc concluded with Village. He also explains that the team wanted Requiem to steer the narrative back toward the main storyline leading up to Resident Evil 6. His comments appear in the January 29, 2026 interview.

Consequently, these games provide broad series knowledge but are not the clearest route into Requiem’s Raccoon City investigation. Choose them when you specifically want Ethan’s complete story, not because you need them to identify Leon, understand the city’s past, or follow Grace’s introduction.

What the returning lore means for a new player

Raccoon City is the central historical link

Requiem is set in Raccoon City and investigates the truth behind the incident that devastated it. You do not need a chronology lesson to follow that investigation, but earlier games establish why the city carries so much weight in the series.

Leon is a returning survivor

The official game listing names Leon S. Kennedy as a protagonist and survivor of the Raccoon City Incident. The Resident Evil 2 remake is therefore the most direct optional introduction to the character before his appearance in Requiem.

Grace connects the new story to the Ashcrofts

Grace Ashcroft is a new protagonist, but her mother Alyssa appeared in the Outbreak context. Alyssa is described as both a survivor and a reporter who kept investigating Umbrella. You can understand Grace as a new character without knowing Alyssa’s earlier appearances; the connection mainly rewards fans who recognize it.

Umbrella remains part of the larger throughline

Capcom presents the series as evolving its stories while retaining a connective thread. The producer’s description of Umbrella’s secret machinations explains why older events can matter without turning every previous game into a prerequisite. Requiem can supply the immediate explanations its plot needs while older titles add resonance.

Choose your route by time and interest

Route A: start immediately

  1. Install Resident Evil Requiem.
  2. Begin on the difficulty and camera perspective that suit you; Capcom lists multiple difficulty settings and real-time switching between first- and third-person perspectives.
  3. Use the game’s own story as your introduction, then return to earlier titles only if a character or reference makes you curious.

This is the route most directly supported by Capcom’s newcomer guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Route B: one-game preparation

  1. Play the 2019 Resident Evil 2 remake.
  2. Start Requiem while the Raccoon City and Leon context is fresh.

This gives you the strongest relevance without committing to a franchise marathon.

Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Route C: Raccoon City focus

  1. Play the Resident Evil 2 remake.
  2. Follow it with the Resident Evil 3 remake for another view of the city-wide catastrophe.
  3. Move to Requiem; do not add more games unless you want a particular character or family-history detour.

Route D: completionist context

  1. Start with the original Resident Evil if you want to see the series’ origins.
  2. Continue through the entries that interest you, including the Raccoon City games, Outbreak titles and the Ethan Winters arc.
  3. Play Requiem last only if experiencing the franchise chronologically is your personal goal.

Capcom does not require this order. It is a way to maximize historical references, not a condition for understanding the new game.

Release details that do not change the recommendation

Capcom lists Resident Evil Requiem as released on February 27, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. The release announcement also reports more than 183 million cumulative Resident Evil game units sold worldwide as of December 31, 2025. That is a franchise-wide total, not Requiem sales. See Capcom’s March 4, 2026 release announcement.

The platform list and franchise sales figure provide current context, but neither changes the prerequisite answer: you can play on any listed platform without completing an earlier Resident Evil title.

Common mistakes when planning your playthrough

  • Treating an optional recommendation as a requirement: The Resident Evil 2 remake is the best single primer, not an admission test.
  • Assuming every returning reference needs an explanation: Capcom designed the game for newcomers, while familiar touches are an added reward for veterans.
  • Choosing Outbreak solely because of the Ashcroft name: The family link is genuine, but the available producer comments do not establish that either Outbreak game is necessary.
  • Playing the Ethan games for the wrong reason: Resident Evil 7 and Village complete a different recent arc and are not the shortest route to Raccoon City context.
  • Waiting for a complete franchise replay: A full series run is appropriate only if you enjoy completionism; it delays a game explicitly built to welcome first-time players.

Final recommendation

Start Resident Evil Requiem now if you want to play it. If you prefer one piece of preparation, play the Resident Evil 2 remake first. Add the Resident Evil 3 remake for additional Raccoon City history, and choose Outbreak only for the Ashcroft-family deep dive. Save Resident Evil 7, Village and a full-series replay for broader franchise exploration rather than required preparation.
