Several Resident Evil games let you control someone other than Leon Kennedy, but they do so in different ways. Resident Evil 6 has a dedicated Ada Wong campaign, Resident Evil Revelations 2 lets you select Claire Redfield’s or Barry Burton’s campaign, and Resident Evil Village adds Chris Redfield, Karl Heisenberg and Alcina Dimitrescu in the expansion’s Mercenaries Additional Orders mode.
Other examples are shorter or version-specific: Resident Evil 4 includes Ada’s Separate Ways and unlockable Mercenaries characters, while Resident Evil Revelations moves among several perspectives and separates Story Mode control from its Raid Mode roster. The key is to identify whether a character is a full protagonist, a short playable section, a co-op partner or a bonus-mode selection.

What counts as “playing as someone other than Leon”?
A character appearing in a game’s story or cast list does not automatically mean you control that character. Resident Evil uses several distinct formats:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Format | What you actually do | Typical significance |
|---|---|---|
| Separate campaign | Choose and complete a substantial story route built around another protagonist. | The clearest answer for players seeking a non-Leon main story. |
| Episode or perspective selection | Select a named character’s campaign or episode from a menu. | May provide a complete route, but structure varies by game. |
| Playable story section | Control another character for one chapter, sequence or short segment. | Meaningful control, but not a complete campaign. |
| Co-op role | A second player controls a partner who assists the lead character. | The partner may have combat control without being able to trigger every story action. |
| Bonus mode | Use another character in Mercenaries, Raid or a similar replay mode. | Usually separate from the main narrative and sometimes sold as expansion content. |
The confirmed examples below are labeled by mode so that “playable” does not get confused with “mentioned” or “present in a cutscene.”
#1 Best Overall
- TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
- RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Confirmed Resident Evil games with non-Leon play
| Game | Character(s) documented as playable | Where the control occurs | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 6 | Ada Wong; the game also has other lead-character campaigns | Ada’s Campaign and the game’s campaign structure | Ada’s route is a dedicated campaign. The official manual also describes a co-op-only supporting agent. |
| Resident Evil Revelations 2 | Claire Redfield and Barry Burton | Selectable campaigns in Episode Select | The official PlayStation 4 manual explicitly says to choose Claire’s or Barry’s campaign. |
| Resident Evil Village: The Mercenaries Additional Orders | Chris Redfield, Karl Heisenberg and Alcina Dimitrescu | Expansion Mercenaries mode | These are bonus-mode characters, not replacements for the main story protagonist. |
| Resident Evil 4 (edition-dependent guide evidence) | Ada Wong and four unlockable Mercenaries characters | Separate Ways and Mercenaries | A Capcom-hosted guide documents this content for an older edition; confirm the exact release you own. |
| Resident Evil Revelations | Several characters in the story structure; additional characters in Raid Mode | Story perspectives and Raid Mode | Capcom specifically notes that Morgan Lansdale is not playable in Story Mode but is playable in Raid Mode. |
Resident Evil 6: Ada Wong has a dedicated campaign
Resident Evil 6 is the strongest answer if you want a full campaign centered on someone other than Leon. Its official manual includes a section titled “Ada’s Campaign,” documenting how to access and play Ada Wong’s route. That makes Ada more than a cameo or temporary switch: she has a distinct campaign with her own objectives and progression.
The manual also explains the campaign’s co-op arrangement. A second player can take the role of a supporting agent who helps Ada in combat, but that partner cannot perform story-progression actions reserved for Ada. In practical terms, the co-op character is a combat assistant rather than an equal second protagonist with independent narrative control.
Resident Evil 6 is built around multiple lead characters, including Leon, Helena, Chris, Piers, Jake, Sherry and Ada. If your question is simply whether the game lets you play as someone other than Leon, the answer is unambiguously yes. If you want a specific character’s route, check the campaign selection and the edition’s manual rather than relying only on a cast list.
Best for
- Players who want a dedicated non-Leon campaign.
- Players interested specifically in Ada Wong.
- Two-player sessions where a second person can assist the campaign lead.
Resident Evil Revelations 2: choose Claire’s or Barry’s campaign
Resident Evil Revelations 2 provides one of the clearest menu-level choices. Its official PlayStation 4 manual says that Episode Select lets you choose either Claire’s campaign or Barry’s campaign. This is direct documentation of two campaign paths, not an inference from the game’s character lineup.
Claire’s route and Barry’s route are connected within the wider episodic story, so the game is not simply offering two unrelated versions of the same adventure. The important point for this question is that both are selectable campaign identities. Leon is not required as the player character for the game’s core episode structure.
What this means when buying or replaying
- Look for the episode-selection screen rather than assuming the opening sequence represents the entire game.
- Confirm the platform and edition, because episodic packages and later compilations can present menus differently.
- Do not describe Barry as merely a support character: the manual documents a Barry campaign choice.
Resident Evil Village: three characters in Mercenaries Additional Orders
Resident Evil Village adds non-Leon control through The Mercenaries Additional Orders, an expansion to the game’s arcade-style Mercenaries mode. Capcom producer Tsuyoshi Kanda identified three new playable characters: Chris Redfield, Karl Heisenberg and Alcina Dimitrescu.
This is a genuine way to play as those characters, but it is not a second main-story campaign. Their inclusion belongs to the expansion’s Mercenaries content, where the objective is to survive combat encounters and score points rather than follow the central Village narrative as a different protagonist.
Recommended Free Tools
That distinction matters if you are choosing a game for story reasons. Buy or install the relevant expansion and select Mercenaries Additional Orders if your priority is experimenting with Chris, Heisenberg or Dimitrescu. Do not expect the main Village campaign to let you replace its primary protagonist with one of these characters.
Mode and access checklist
- Mode: Mercenaries Additional Orders.
- Characters: Chris Redfield, Karl Heisenberg and Alcina Dimitrescu.
- Story status: bonus-mode play, not a replacement main campaign.
- Availability: expansion content, so verify that your edition includes the add-on.
Resident Evil 4: Ada’s Separate Ways and Mercenaries unlocks
Capcom-hosted guide material for an older edition of Resident Evil 4 documents two forms of non-Leon play. Ada Wong appears in Separate Ways, and the guide also describes four unlockable characters for Mercenaries.
Separate Ways is the substantial story-focused option: it follows Ada’s perspective rather than making her a temporary partner in Leon’s route. Mercenaries is different. Its unlockable roster is designed for replaying combat stages and improving scores, not for adding another narrative campaign.

Because the cited guide is edition-specific and older, treat the exact availability of Separate Ways and the four Mercenaries unlocks as a version question. Remakes, ports and bundled releases can package story expansions and bonus modes differently. Before purchasing, check the product description or manual for the precise platform and edition.
Resident Evil Revelations: story perspectives are not the same as a free character roster
Capcom describes Resident Evil Revelations as a game that jumps among multiple characters and perspectives instead of following one protagonist throughout. That explains why players may remember controlling or following several characters during the story, but the narrative description alone is not a complete control list.
The game also demonstrates why mode labels matter. Capcom’s character material states that Morgan Lansdale is not playable in Story Mode but is playable in Raid Mode. In other words, a character can be available to control in an arcade-style or replay mode without being a story protagonist.
Chris Redfield is part of the game’s character discussion, and Raid Mode has its own playable-character context. For an exact claim about a particular platform or release, use that version’s manual or in-game roster. The safe conclusion is that Revelations offers non-Leon play, but you should identify whether you mean a story sequence or Raid Mode before naming a character.
Can you play as Claire, Chris or Ada?
Claire Redfield
Yes, Resident Evil Revelations 2 is directly documented as offering Claire’s campaign through Episode Select. Capcom’s franchise timeline also lists Claire as a major character in other games, including Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 2-related story material, but a timeline cast summary is not by itself proof of the exact control scheme in every edition. For a specific remake, port or bonus mode, verify the release documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChris Redfield
Yes, Chris is a confirmed playable choice in Resident Evil Village’s Mercenaries Additional Orders. He is also one of the major leads associated with Resident Evil 6’s multi-campaign structure, although the clearest manual evidence cited here is the dedicated documentation for Ada’s Campaign. If your requirement is a Chris-led story route, check the edition’s campaign documentation; if bonus-mode play is acceptable, Village’s expansion names Chris explicitly.
Ada Wong
Yes, Ada has the strongest range of documented options. She has a dedicated campaign in Resident Evil 6, and Capcom’s guide material for an older Resident Evil 4 edition documents her Separate Ways story content. Resident Evil 4 also includes Ada-related bonus play through its Mercenaries content, subject to edition differences.

Capcom’s Resident Evil timeline identifies prominent non-Leon characters in several additional games:
- Resident Evil 0: Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen.
- Resident Evil: Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine.
- Resident Evil 2: Leon, Claire, Ada and Sherry.
- Resident Evil 3: Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira.
- Code: Veronica: Claire, Chris and Steve Burnside.
- Resident Evil 5: Chris, Sheva Alomar, Jill and Wesker.
- Resident Evil 6: Leon, Helena, Chris, Piers, Jake, Sherry and Ada.
These entries establish the games’ story casts, not a complete list of controllable characters, chapters or unlock conditions. A character may be playable only in a particular scenario, may be controlled briefly, or may be present only in cutscenes. Use the timeline as a checklist, then confirm the exact version in its manual or official game documentation before calling a character playable.

How to choose the right game
| Your priority | Best documented match | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A full campaign as Ada | Resident Evil 6 | Its official manual documents Ada’s Campaign. |
| A Claire-led campaign | Resident Evil Revelations 2 | Episode Select explicitly offers Claire’s campaign. |
| A Barry-led campaign | Resident Evil Revelations 2 | The same menu documents Barry’s campaign. |
| Chris in a replayable combat mode | Resident Evil Village: Mercenaries Additional Orders | Chris is one of three named expansion characters. |
| Ada outside Leon’s main route | Resident Evil 4 or Resident Evil 6 | Separate Ways is documented for an older Resident Evil 4 edition; Resident Evil 6 has Ada’s Campaign. |
| A multi-character perspective structure | Resident Evil Revelations | Its story jumps among perspectives, while Raid Mode has a separate roster. |
Version and mode checks before you start
- Identify the exact release. Write down the platform, remake or original designation, and whether the game is a base release, port or bundle.
- Read the mode name. “Campaign,” “Episode Select,” “Separate Ways,” “Raid” and “Mercenaries” describe different kinds of play.
- Check unlock requirements. Bonus characters may require story progress, challenge completion or an expansion.
- Confirm included content. A standard edition may not include an expansion mode documented for a complete package.
- Use the manual or official roster. This prevents mistaking a story cast list for a control list.
What about Resident Evil Requiem?
Capcom’s 2025 Integrated Report described Resident Evil Requiem as scheduled for February 2026 and identified Grace Ashcroft as its protagonist. That report predates the scheduled launch and does not establish the final playable-character roster. Consequently, it should not be used alone to claim that a particular additional character is playable in the released game. Check current official documentation for the exact version before adding Requiem to a definitive list.
Bottom line for non-Leon players
Start with Resident Evil 6 for a dedicated Ada campaign or Resident Evil Revelations 2 for documented Claire and Barry campaign choices. Choose Resident Evil Village if you specifically want Chris, Heisenberg or Dimitrescu in Mercenaries Additional Orders, and choose Resident Evil 4 for Ada’s Separate Ways and edition-dependent Mercenaries content. Resident Evil’s timeline contains many other important characters, but each one still needs version-specific control documentation before it belongs on a confirmed playable list.
