There is not enough current, model-verified evidence to name the five most energy-efficient refrigerators you can buy in 2026. The official ENERGY STAR Most Efficient results reviewed here are for 2025, not a definitive 2026 ranking. They do provide three useful examples—each a compact bottom-freezer model—whose annual electricity use can be compared alongside capacity. Before buying, check the exact model number and its EnergyGuide label, then confirm availability and fit.

Three verified examples from the 2025 ENERGY STAR list

ENERGY STAR’s 2025 Most Efficient results list the models below. They are examples, not the five best refrigerators for 2026, and the figures do not establish a ranking across the entire market.

Model Configuration Capacity Annual energy use
Beko BFBF2414SS Bottom freezer 11.4 cubic feet 286 kWh/year
Liebherr C5250 Bottom freezer 11.4 cubic feet 288 kWh/year
LG LB12S2000* series entry Bottom freezer 11.8 cubic feet 285 kWh/year

These figures come from ENERGY STAR’s 2025 Most Efficient results. The asterisk on the LG entry refers to a model family or suffix range; verify the precise model number and its label before applying the listed figure to a product for sale. The results page is dynamic, so check the current record as well.

How to compare refrigerator energy use fairly

Start with the exact model’s annual kWh

Annual electricity use in kilowatt-hours (kWh) is the clearest model-level measure for comparing how much electricity a refrigerator is expected to use. Compare the EnergyGuide label for the exact model, rather than relying on general brand claims. The Federal Trade Commission’s EnergyGuide label guidance describes the refrigerator-freezer label and the model-specific information it must present.

  • FLEXIBLE CONFIGURATION: The adjustable/removable shelves offer flexibility to customize the interior layout according to your needs, accommodating items of various sizes with ease. A reversible door also allows for flexible opening to best suit your space

Account for capacity and configuration

A smaller refrigerator can use fewer kWh per year simply because it stores less. Compare capacity as well as annual energy use, and consider whether a top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side, or other configuration fits your household. ENERGY STAR says the most energy-efficient models are typically 16–20 cubic feet; the three examples above are smaller, so their lower annual figures should not be read as proof they are more efficient for equivalent storage.

ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator buying guidance says top-freezer models tend to use less energy than bottom-freezer or side-by-side designs, and recommends fewer doors because they reduce air leakage. These are useful design considerations, not substitutes for comparing the model-specific kWh figure and capacity.

Check fit, features, and operating details

Before choosing a candidate, verify the exact model’s manufacturer documentation and consider:

  • Kitchen and delivery fit: Check exterior dimensions, door swing, ventilation clearances, and the route through doors, halls, and stairs.
  • Dispensers and ice makers: Compare whether the model includes through-door dispensers or an ice maker. Do not assume their effect on energy use without model-level evidence.
  • Refrigerant: ENERGY STAR identifies R-600a and R-441A as lower-global-warming-potential refrigerants. Check the product documentation for the specific model.
  • Door seals: ENERGY STAR advises checking seals; a sound seal helps limit cold-air leakage.
  • Total purchase cost: Account for locally available rebates, delivery, and removal terms, not just the sticker price.

Verify certification and the EnergyGuide record

Certification and model availability can change, and suffixes can distinguish products within a model family. Confirm that the exact model being sold is currently certified and that its EnergyGuide label matches the claimed annual use.

  2. Compare that number with the product’s EnergyGuide label and official product record.
  3. Use the U.S. Department of Energy’s consumer-product rating database to search refrigerator data by brand, type, model number, and manufacturing year. DOE says the database covers models greater than 10 cubic feet but does not include every model.
  4. Check ENERGY STAR’s current listing if certification or Most Efficient status matters to your decision.

Are ENERGY STAR refrigerators worth it?

ENERGY STAR certification can help narrow a search, but it does not remove the need to compare exact-model energy use, capacity, fit, and price. ENERGY STAR says partner organizations sponsor rebates on certified products and offers a rebate finder. Rebate amounts and eligibility depend on location and current program terms, so check the offer available where you live before counting it toward the purchase price.
