The most reliable setup is a per-game balance: enable Game Turbo, use the highest frame-rate mode the game actually offers, start with moderate graphics quality, and reduce graphics quality before reducing frame rate when heat or battery drain becomes a problem. Keep brightness and refresh rate no higher than you need. These changes can reduce demand, but Xiaomi has not published a tested combination that guarantees a particular battery saving or frame rate.

What the Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G can actually deliver
A 120Hz panel does not mean every game runs at 120 frames per second. Xiaomi’s UK support FAQ lists the following maximums for specific titles:

Xiaomi describes the phone as suitable for casual gaming but says it may not be optimal for large games. Treat demanding open-world or large-download titles as compromise cases rather than expecting flagship-class performance.
Set up Game Turbo first
Xiaomi says Game Turbo prioritizes CPU and GPU resources for games and minimizes background activity. That describes its intended behavior; Xiaomi does not provide a measured battery improvement for the feature.
- Open the Security app.
- Scroll down to Game Turbo. If it is not visible, your regional build may use a different location or label.
- Add the game you want to tune, then launch it from Game Turbo.
- Play one complete match or level before changing more settings. Use the same game mode when comparing changes.
Do not assume every Game Turbo switch shown in an online guide exists on your phone. Xiaomi’s FAQ confirms the feature but does not document identical controls for every region or software version.

1. Select a supported frame-rate mode
In the game’s graphics menu, choose the highest frame-rate option that is actually available and remains within Xiaomi’s listed ceiling for that title. For example, a 60-fps option is the sensible upper target for PUBG, Call of Duty: Mobile and Wild Rift; Mobile Legends: Bang Bang may expose a 90-fps mode.

Do not enable an option merely because the display is rated at 120Hz. If the game does not provide a 90- or 120-fps mode, changing the phone’s display refresh setting cannot create additional game frames.
2. Start graphics quality at medium or balanced
Use the game’s medium, balanced or equivalent preset as the starting point. It leaves thermal and battery headroom while you establish whether the desired frame rate is stable.
3. Reduce visual quality before frame rate when heat or drain rises
If the phone becomes hot or battery use is more important than image detail, lower the graphics-quality preset first while retaining the supported frame-rate mode. Lower-quality textures, effects or resolution reduce rendering work without making controls feel as sluggish as a frame-rate reduction.
If the game still stutters, drops frames or becomes uncomfortably hot, move down one frame-rate option. A stable 45 or 30 fps mode is preferable to an unstable higher setting.

4. Compare one change at a time
Change graphics quality, frame rate or a display setting separately, then repeat the same workload. This will not produce a laboratory measurement, but it prevents you from attributing a change to the wrong setting. Xiaomi has not published a combined “best battery” profile for this handset.
Use the display as a battery control
Refresh rate
Xiaomi lists a maximum display refresh rate of 120Hz for the phone. Higher refresh can make scrolling and supported games look smoother, but it also asks the display system to work more often. If your game is capped at 60 fps, try the lower refresh-rate choice offered in Display settings and check whether controls still feel responsive.
Refresh-rate savings are a practical inference, not a quantified Xiaomi test. Keep the higher setting when the added smoothness is important to you; use the lower setting for long sessions where endurance matters more.
Brightness
Set brightness to the lowest level that remains comfortable in your room. The display is continuously active during play, so avoiding unnecessarily high brightness is a straightforward way to reduce demand. Automatic brightness can be useful when lighting changes, but check that it is not driving the panel brighter than needed.

These are starting profiles, not Xiaomi-validated presets. Your game’s available options and the phone’s temperature should decide the final choice.
Control background work without over-optimizing
Game Turbo is intended to minimize background activity. Before launching a long session, close an app that is actively synchronizing, recording video or using navigation if you do not need it. Avoid routinely force-closing every app: broad claims that this always improves battery life are not established, and repeatedly relaunching apps can itself consume power.
- Pause large downloads and cloud backups during play.
- Disable screen recording, overlays or voice effects that you are not using.
- Keep only the connectivity features required for the game. Do not disable the connection you need for an online match.
- Turn off unnecessary notifications if they repeatedly wake the display.
Manage heat and charging safely
Heat is a sign that the phone is working hard, not a setting that can be eliminated completely. If the chassis becomes too warm, lower graphics quality, reduce frame rate and remove a thick case that traps heat. Move to a cooler room and take a break if comfort or stability continues to deteriorate.

Xiaomi’s FAQ warns that heavy use while charging can reduce charging speed and add heat. Gaming while plugged in is therefore not a battery-saving technique. For demanding sessions, charge beforehand, use a ventilated surface and avoid covering the phone.

There is no published thermal profile or measured gaming-battery test in Xiaomi’s cited support material, so do not treat a particular temperature, runtime or charging behavior as guaranteed.
Check which battery specification applies to your region
Xiaomi lists different typical capacities on regional pages. These are market-specific specifications, not one universal number:

Verify the page for the market where you bought the phone before quoting capacity. Even with the same typical capacity, runtime depends on brightness, network signal, game workload, temperature, software and battery condition; capacity alone cannot predict a session length.

Xiaomi notes that battery use can temporarily rise after an update while background optimization runs, usually stabilizing within a few charge cycles. If drain changes immediately after updating, give the phone those cycles before judging a new gaming setup. If the increase persists, check which app is using power in the system battery screen and retest with the same game and display settings.
Troubleshoot common gaming symptoms
The game feels smooth but the phone drains quickly
- Lower brightness.
- Try the lower refresh-rate option.
- Keep the supported frame rate but reduce graphics quality.
- Stop background downloads, recording and synchronization.
The frame rate jumps or stutters
- Confirm that the game is using its highest stable option, not simply its highest advertised option.
- Reduce graphics quality and effects first.
- Lower frame rate if the phone is hot.
- Retest after closing a resource-heavy background task.
The phone heats while charging
- Stop intensive play while charging and let the device cool.
- Continue the session after charging, on a hard ventilated surface.
- Do not interpret slower charging during play as a fault without first removing the gaming load.
The Game Turbo menu is missing
Search the Security app rather than the game’s own settings. Xiaomi confirms the feature on this model, but regional software builds may use different placement or labels. Install system updates from the phone’s normal updater and check again; do not install an unofficial utility to imitate Game Turbo.
Bottom line
Enable Game Turbo, target the frame-rate mode your specific game supports, begin at medium graphics quality, and lower graphics before frame rate when heat or battery drain becomes unacceptable. Pair that with comfortable—not maximum—brightness and a lower refresh rate when the visual trade-off is acceptable. These choices improve the balance between smoothness, heat and endurance, but no single preset guarantees the same result for every game or regional Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G.
