Which Reading App Is Best for Kids? 6 Options by Age and Goal

The best reading app for a child depends on what they need to practice: Khan Academy Kids and Duolingo ABC offer free early-literacy activities, Reading Eggs focuses on structured lessons, Epic centers on a digital book library, and ABCmouse and Starfall fold reading into broader or staged learning programs. Match the app to the child’s reading stage, your budget, and the device you have—not to a universal ranking.

How to choose a reading app for your child

First decide whether your child needs help with letter sounds and decoding, wants more books to read, or would benefit from reading activities bundled with other subjects. Those are different jobs, and an app’s large activity count or catalog does not by itself show that it will suit a particular reader.

  • For early phonics and decoding: look for a clear sequence of sound-letter practice, words, and stories. Duolingo ABC, Reading Eggs, and Starfall describe early-literacy pathways or lessons.
  • For independent book browsing: a large digital library may be a better fit. Epic emphasizes children’s books and includes a parent dashboard.
  • For a broader learning routine: Khan Academy Kids and ABCmouse include reading alongside other subjects.
  • Before subscribing: check the current age guidance, price and trial terms, parent controls, and compatibility with the specific phone or tablet model. Product pages and app listings can change.

Six reading apps for different needs

Khan Academy Kids: free, broad early learning

Khan Academy describes Khan Academy Kids as a free app for individual families and teachers, intended for ages 2–8, with more than 4,000 activities across literacy and other learning areas. Its literacy materials include books and read-aloud text highlighting. It is a broad early-learning app, not a reading-only curriculum. The organization says the app has no ads and does not let third parties track children across other apps or sites; it also lists Amazon tablets among supported platforms. Its App Store listing describes an Epic Family paid subscription beginning with a seven-day free trial and a parent dashboard for viewing reading and progress. The listing promotes its book catalog but does not establish a comparable current subscription price. It also repeats a claim that 95% of Epic parents say the service helped improve reading skills; that is Epic’s parent-survey claim, not an independent finding about children’s outcomes. See Epic’s App Store listing.

Reading Eggs: structured early-literacy lessons

Reading Eggs promotes lessons covering phonics and sight words, plus a read-aloud feature that records a child’s reading for later review. Its official start page also points families and educators to resources. The page used here does not establish a current price or precise age bands, so check the provider’s current information and the app listing before deciding whether its lesson level and cost fit your child. What effectiveness claims can—and cannot—tell you

Provider descriptions are useful for checking features, lesson scope, and access terms. They are not interchangeable with independent evaluations. Epic’s 95% figure is a survey claim about parents’ views, while Duolingo reports a literacy-score result attributed to Education Development Center. The cited pages do not provide enough detail here to treat either figure as a guaranteed outcome for a child or to compare the apps’ effectiveness.

For a practical decision, look at whether the child can engage with the activities, whether practice matches the skill they need, and whether the parent controls and device setup work for your household. An app can support reading practice; it should not be selected solely on a promotional statistic.

Check the device and subscription before you start

  • Confirm the app is available for your exact operating system and tablet or phone model. Khan Academy Kids lists Amazon tablets, but that does not establish compatibility for every app or every tablet model.
  • Review whether the plan is free, limited, or paid, and read the current renewal and trial terms before subscribing. The sources cited here do not establish comparable current prices for Epic and Reading Eggs.
  • Look for parent tools that matter to you, such as activity visibility or progress tracking. Epic identifies a parent dashboard; Khan Academy Kids identifies a parent section.
  • Choose an age or lesson level that fits the child’s current stage, rather than assuming all apps cover the same grades or skills.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
