Privacy changes are linked to your PlayStation account and follow you to other devices. Accessibility features can depend on the console language, the content being viewed, the game, the controller, and family-account restrictions. The settings below provide a practical audit without assuming one configuration suits every player.

Menu wording can vary slightly with system software and region. If a label differs, use the current equivalent shown on your console.

Set a privacy baseline, then customize it
In Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy, select a preset or choose the option to view and customize individual privacy settings. Sony describes four presets:

These are starting points, not rankings. A player who wants discovery and frequent invitations may prefer an open profile; someone reducing unsolicited contact can start with Friend Focused and then adjust individual controls. Solo and Focused also blocks invitations from friends, so it is more restrictive than simply limiting strangers.
After selecting a preset, open the detailed controls. The following checks address the areas that most often expose more information or create unwanted contact.
Limit identity information in search and suggestions
Review who can see your real name and profile picture in search results, inside games and in friend suggestions. If you use a public-facing online ID, limiting real-name and picture visibility separates your account identity from casual contacts without preventing every social feature.

Check who can see your friends list and other profile information. This is separate from activity visibility: a person might be allowed to see that you are online while being unable to browse your friends, or vice versa. Set each audience deliberately rather than assuming one privacy choice covers all profile details.
Hide activity when you need to
Review who can see your online status, current game and gaming history. The privacy controls also allow selected games to be hidden. Hiding a title is useful when you want your general activity visible but do not want a particular game to appear in your history.

Reduce unwanted requests and conversations
Decide who can ask to be your friend and who can interact with you through parties, games and messages. Narrowing these audiences is the most direct way to reduce unsolicited invitations while keeping communication available to people you know.
Check blocks and crossplay invitations
Review the players you have blocked and the setting for crossplay game invitations. Blocking is useful for a specific person; a narrower invitation audience is better when you want a general reduction in contact. These controls address different situations and should be checked separately.
Privacy settings are account-linked, so a change is reflected across your devices. Family members who are children can have profile settings managed by a family manager, parent or guardian, depending on the parental-control configuration. PlayStation Stars visibility options are limited to supported regions and are unavailable on child accounts. Sony’s detailed privacy guidance is available at PlayStation Support.
Choose accessibility changes by the problem you are solving
Open Settings > Accessibility. PS5 groups the relevant tools rather than requiring one universal accessibility mode. The main list includes display and text settings, screen reader, closed captions, chat transcription, zoom, controller settings, mono audio, haptic feedback and a way to check game accessibility.
Improve readability and visual comfort
Under Settings > Accessibility > Display and Sound, adjust colour inversion, colour correction, text size, bold text, high contrast, check marks that identify enabled settings, auto-scroll speed and reduce motion. These options solve different problems: larger or bolder text helps reading, contrast separates interface elements, colour correction can make information easier to distinguish, and reduced motion can make navigation more comfortable.

There is an important trade-off with colour inversion: Sony notes that turning on Invert Colours turns HDR off. If HDR picture quality matters to you, try colour correction, larger text, high contrast or zoom before enabling inversion.
Use zoom for small interface elements
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display and Sound > Zoom. Once enabled, zoom can be engaged with the PS button and Square button. It is useful for a temporary close look at small text or controls, while text-size and contrast changes are better for a persistent adjustment.
Have the screen reader speak console text
The screen reader reads on-screen text and provides spoken guidance for operating the console. Its speech speed, voice type and volume can be adjusted. Sony lists Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. The spoken language follows the console language, so changing the reader’s language may require changing the system language as well. Availability is therefore narrower than the full set of languages in which PS5 menus or games may be offered.
Turn on and style closed captions
Use Settings > Accessibility > Closed Captions > Display Closed Captions. Captions can include spoken dialogue and audio cues when the content supports them. You can customize font size, colour, edges, opacity, background colour and opacity, and window colour and opacity. The content being watched determines whether captions can actually be displayed, so a correctly enabled setting cannot add captions to unsupported video.
Make party and game chat readable or audible
Chat transcription provides speech-to-text and text-to-speech in party voice chat and in supported games. Text you enter can be read aloud to other players, and spoken chat can be converted to text. In game chat, the feature works only in games that support it. Sony lists English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish for chat transcription, so language availability is more limited than the screen reader’s list.

Combine headphone channels with mono audio
Mono audio sends the same sound through both left and right headphones, preventing information from being confined to one side. Sony’s Canadian support path is Settings > Sound > Audio Output > Headphones > Mono Audio for Headphones. If your console presents the option in a different location, search the current Sound and Audio Output labels; organization can vary by system version or region.
Adapt the controller and navigation feedback
Controller settings include custom button assignments for the DualSense and haptic feedback during console navigation. Navigation haptics require a selected vibration intensity and a supported PlayStation controller; Sony specifies DualSense, DualSense Edge and PS VR2 Sense controllers for this setting. If a different physical control arrangement is needed, Sony also provides support information for the optional PlayStation Access controller. You do not need additional hardware to change the software settings described here.
Add frequently used tools to the control centre
Accessibility features can be added to the control centre for quicker access. This is practical when you switch between captions, zoom, screen-reader use or other options for different games, people or viewing situations.
Check a game before assuming the console setting is enough
Use the game’s PlayStation Store game hub to check its available accessibility features. Console-level captions, chat transcription and display tools cannot make an unsupported game expose controls it does not implement. A game may also offer its own text, subtitle, colour, camera or control options inside its settings.

Use family controls for child accounts
For a child account, go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management or use the PlayStation Family app. A family manager, parent or guardian can manage the child’s privacy settings and decide which of those settings the child may change. Sony says the parent or guardian is notified when settings are changed.
The Communication and User-Generated Content restriction can disable text messaging and voice chat, prevent the child from sharing user-generated content, prevent viewing other players’ user-generated content, and block links to selected third-party communication services. A child can request an exception for communication features in a specific game, allowing the adult to assess that request rather than opening communication globally.
These controls address child accounts separately from an adult player’s own privacy preset. Review both when a shared console has multiple users. Sony documents the controls at PlayStation parental controls support.

- Fewer unsolicited contacts: Start with Friend Focused, then narrow friend requests, party, game and message audiences. Use blocking for individual problem accounts.
- Maximum isolation: Solo and Focused prevents profile visibility and invitations even from friends; choose it only if that loss of social access is acceptable.
- Social discovery: Social and Open or Team Player leaves more profile information visible and permits broader interaction, with Team Player requiring a friends-of-friends connection for chat invitations.
- Readable menus: Try text size, bold text, high contrast, colour correction, reduced motion and zoom in combination, reserving colour inversion for cases where its HDR trade-off is acceptable.
- Hearing spoken content: Use closed captions for supported video and games, and check each game’s support. For voice chat, enable chat transcription only where the game and language support it.
- One-sided headphone audio: Enable mono audio for headphones so both ears receive the same channel.
- Guardian oversight: Use Family Management to decide which privacy controls a child may change and whether communication or user-generated content is allowed.
Important limits to remember
- Screen-reader languages are tied to the console language and are limited to Sony’s listed languages.
- Chat transcription has a shorter six-language list and does not work in game chat unless the game supports it.
- Closed captions depend on the content supplying caption data.
- Invert Colours disables HDR.
- Navigation haptics require an eligible PlayStation controller and a chosen vibration intensity.
- Family managers can override or restrict a child’s ability to change privacy settings.
- PlayStation Stars visibility controls depend on supported regions and are unavailable for child accounts.
Bottom line
For most adults, the worthwhile change is to choose a privacy preset, inspect real-name, activity and contact audiences individually, and then enable only the accessibility tools that solve a specific reading, hearing, movement or control problem. For children, make Family Management part of the same review. Revisit the settings after a system update, a change of console language, or when a new game’s own accessibility and communication options differ from the console defaults.
