Short answer: the best wireless keyboard for a PlayStation 3 is one that reliably handles text entry, messaging and browsing—not one advertised as a guarantee of universal game control. Sony’s PS3 guide supports USB and Bluetooth keyboards when a text-entry screen is open, while Sony’s own CECH-ZKB1 manual warns that some games do not accept a wireless keyboard during gameplay. Buy for your primary use, verify the exact model and connection method, and treat in-game control as a title-by-title possibility.
The original Sony CECH-ZKB1 is the clearest documented full-size option. A generic Bluetooth HID keyboard is a sensible alternative for chat and text, and a USB keyboard is the simplest fallback. None should be described as providing a “perfect” experience in every PS3 game.

What a wireless keyboard can do on PS3
Sony’s current online PS3 user guide says a connected USB or Bluetooth keyboard can enter text whenever a text-entry screen is displayed. The console enables the connected keyboard after you press a key on that screen. This covers practical tasks such as entering messages, naming saved data, typing search terms in the browser and chatting in services or games that expose a text field. See Sony’s PS3 keyboard guide for the supported text-entry behavior.

There are two important boundaries. First, predictive mode is unavailable while a connected keyboard is being used, so the on-screen prediction feature should not be expected to shorten typing. Second, text entry support does not mean that a keyboard becomes a universal game controller. Sony’s CECH-ZKB1 instructions state: “Some games do not support use of the wireless keyboard during gameplay.” That limitation is a property of the game or application, not something a different brand can automatically solve.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use this rule when deciding whether to buy: if your goal is chat, browsing or faster text entry, a wireless keyboard is a sound PS3 accessory. If your goal is to replace the DualShock in every game, no documented option can promise that outcome.
Best options by PS3 use case
| Option | Best for | Connection | What is documented | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sony CECH-ZKB1 wireless keyboard | Full-size typing, chat and browsing | Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, HID | Sony documents PS3 pairing, a pointing stick, a PS button and a limited controller mode. The CECH-ZKB1GB manual requires PS3 system software 3.60 or later. | Some games do not support keyboard input during play; controller-mode mappings may fail in some games or applications. |
| Generic Bluetooth HID keyboard | Text entry when you already own a compatible keyboard | Bluetooth | Sony’s PS3 guide and Bluetooth-device manager support Bluetooth keyboards and peripherals. | Official materials do not certify every model or promise game control. Pairing behavior, layout and pass-key requirements vary. |
| USB keyboard | Most predictable setup for occasional typing | USB cable | The PS3 guide supports a connected USB keyboard on text-entry screens. | A cable limits seating distance and occupies a USB port. The guide does not establish universal gameplay support. |
| Sony PS3 Wireless Keypad (CECHZK1 family) | Compact, controller-mounted text input | Attaches to a wireless controller | Sony describes text entry and a touchpad mode in its accessory manual. | It is a small keypad, not the full CECH-ZKB1 keyboard; choose it only when compactness matters more than full-size typing. |
The table separates documented capability from assumptions. Sony’s primary materials describe supported functions and specifications, not an independent head-to-head ranking, latency test or current availability survey. A listing that says “gaming keyboard” is not evidence that a particular PS3 title accepts it.
Sony CECH-ZKB1: the most clearly documented full keyboard
The CECH-ZKB1 is Sony’s dedicated PS3 wireless keyboard family. Regional suffixes matter: the manual covers the CECH-ZKB1GB, while Sony’s Japanese announcement identifies CECH-ZKB1JP. The Japanese model was announced on June 7, 2011, for release on June 30, 2011. When searching used listings, read the complete suffix rather than assuming every CECH-ZKB1 listing is identical. Sony’s announcement is available at the 2011 CECH-ZKB1JP release notice.
Sony describes a 19 mm full-size key pitch, Bluetooth HID support, a PS button, text input for online-game and PlayStation Home chat, and web browsing with the pointing stick. “Convenient” language in that announcement is manufacturer positioning, not a measured performance claim.

| Specification | Documented value and qualification |
|---|---|
| PS3 requirement | PS3 system software 3.60 or later for the CECH-ZKB1GB manual’s keyboard. |
| Wireless standard | Bluetooth 2.1+EDR using the HID profile. |
| Range | Approximately 10 m maximum; Sony says actual range varies with conditions. |
| Power | Two AA batteries. |
| Approximate size | 290 × 25 × 120.4 mm. |
| Key spacing | 19 mm full-size pitch for the CECH-ZKB1JP announcement. |
These figures apply to the cited CECH-ZKB1 documentation, not to every wireless keyboard. Sony also says compatibility with all Bluetooth devices is not guaranteed, so the presence of Bluetooth on a product box is not by itself a PS3 certification.
Read the CECH-ZKB1GB Wireless Keyboard Instruction Manual before buying a used unit. It gives the pairing sequence, controller-mode shortcuts, battery information and operating cautions.
How to pair a Bluetooth keyboard with PS3
Pairing is a one-time console setup, and the keyboard may need its own pairing procedure first. Keep the keyboard close to the PS3, install charged batteries or connect its power, and make sure it is discoverable.
- On the PS3 XMB, open Settings.
- Choose Accessory Settings.
- Select Manage Bluetooth Devices. Sony’s older system-software guide documents this menu at Manage Bluetooth Devices.
- Choose Register New Device, then select Start Scanning.
- Put the keyboard into pairing or discoverable mode using its own instructions. For the CECH-ZKB1, hold Fn and press Insert/PAIRING until the indicator flashes.
- When the PS3 lists the device, select the keyboard. The CECH-ZKB1 appears as Wireless Keyboard.
- Enter the pass key shown by the PS3 on the keyboard if prompted, then confirm. Generic keyboards may use a different pass-key sequence; follow the number-entry instructions supplied with that keyboard.
- Open a text-entry screen and press a key. The PS3 should switch input to the connected keyboard.
A successful registration does not imply that every game will accept keystrokes. Test the exact application in which you intend to type, because a title can expose a text field without accepting keyboard controls for movement or combat.

Using the CECH-ZKB1 as a limited controller
The CECH-ZKB1 includes a controller mode that maps selected keyboard inputs to PS3 controls. Sony documents Fn + F1–F12 mappings for controller buttons, including shoulder and stick buttons, Select and Start. Fn + the pointing stick maps to the left stick, and Fn + the arrow keys maps to directional keys.
These shortcuts are useful only where the game or application recognizes Sony’s mapping. The manual warns, “You may not be able to use this product as a controller with some games or applications.” That is narrower than support for a USB or Bluetooth keyboard on a text-entry screen. Do not interpret the controller mode as keyboard-and-mouse support, an emulator layer for every title, or a substitute for a DualShock in games designed around analog controls.
Before relying on the feature, check the game’s own control documentation or test it in a safe menu. Confirm that directional input, the buttons you need and any stick movement are recognized. Keep the regular controller paired so you can recover if the keyboard mapping is ignored.

Choose the connection first
- Bluetooth: best when you want to sit away from the console and keep the USB ports free. Confirm that the keyboard supports Bluetooth HID and can enter a discoverable mode.
- USB: simplest for text entry because there is no Bluetooth registration or pass key. The trade-off is a cable and a used port.
- Proprietary wireless dongle: do not assume PS3 compatibility. The official material reviewed specifically addresses USB and Bluetooth keyboards; a keyboard requiring a special receiver needs evidence from its own instructions before purchase.
Match the layout to the task
For long messages, browser searches or online-game chat, full-size spacing is easier to live with than a thumb keypad. The CECH-ZKB1’s documented 19 mm pitch gives a reference point. Compact layouts can be sensible in a small living-room setup, but inspect whether essential keys, arrow keys and the function layer are accessible.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Decide whether a pointing device matters
The CECH-ZKB1’s pointing stick is documented for web browsing. A generic keyboard with a touchpad or pointing device may be convenient, but the PS3 sources do not establish that every integrated pointer works in every application. Treat the pointer as an accessory feature, not a guarantee.
Check power and condition
For an older wireless keyboard, inspect the battery compartment for corrosion, verify that all keys register and confirm that the pairing indicator works. Ask for the exact regional suffix and a return option when buying used. Sony’s approximately 10 m range is a maximum under stated conditions, not a promise through walls or furniture.
Separate text-entry needs from gameplay claims
Write down the titles and applications you actually use. If the list is mostly messages, browser fields and names, prioritize comfortable keys and reliable pairing. If it is a specific game, look for that game’s documented keyboard support rather than choosing by keyboard brand, RGB lighting or a “gaming” label.

Troubleshooting pairing and input
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| The PS3 does not list the keyboard | The keyboard is not discoverable, is already connected elsewhere or has weak batteries. | Follow the keyboard’s pairing sequence again, replace or recharge batteries, move it close to the PS3 and run Register New Device > Start Scanning again. |
| A pass key fails | The keyboard expects a particular number-entry method. | Read the keyboard’s pairing instructions, type the displayed digits on that keyboard and confirm as directed. The CECH-ZKB1 uses the on-screen pass-key step in its manual. |
| It pairs but does nothing in a game | The title does not support keyboard gameplay or does not accept the CECH-ZKB1 controller mapping. | Test a known text-entry field. Keep the standard controller available and check the game’s controls; changing keyboards cannot override a game’s input design. |
| Typing works in one place but not another | Support is screen- or application-dependent. | Press a key only after the text-entry screen is active. If the application has no keyboard-enabled field, use the controller’s on-screen keyboard. |
| Range is unreliable | Distance, walls, interference or battery condition. | Replace batteries, reduce distance and remove obstructions. Sony’s 10 m figure is approximate and condition-dependent. |
If you previously paired the keyboard with another device, disconnect it there before scanning. Bluetooth registration and game support are separate tests: passing the first does not prove the second.

Buying an older CECH-ZKB1 without surprises
The CECH-ZKB1 is a 2011-era accessory, so current stock, packaging and battery condition are variable. Treat a used listing as a specific hardware purchase, not as proof that Sony still sells a new, universally compatible keyboard. Confirm the exact suffix (for example, CECH-ZKB1GB or CECH-ZKB1JP), the included battery cover, the condition of the key legends and the seller’s return terms.
- Ask whether the keyboard powers on and enters pairing mode.
- Check photographs for corrosion, missing feet, damaged keycaps and a readable model label.
- Confirm that your PS3 runs system software 3.60 or later, the requirement stated in the CECH-ZKB1GB manual.
- Make sure the listing is the full CECH-ZKB1 keyboard, not the smaller CECHZK1 wireless keypad.
- Do not pay a premium solely for a “gaming” description; the documented benefit is convenient PS3 text input plus limited mappings.
There is no reliable current comparative price or availability figure in Sony’s documentation. Condition and regional supply can change quickly, so evaluate the individual listing and its return policy.
Full keyboard or PS3 Wireless Keypad?
The PS3 Wireless Keypad (CECHZK1 family) attaches to a wireless controller and adds text-entry and touchpad functions. It makes sense when you want to type short messages without setting a keyboard on your lap or beside the console. A full keyboard is the better ergonomic choice for long chat sessions, browser use and conventional typing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not confuse the CECHZK1 accessory with the CECH-ZKB1. They have different form factors and intended uses. Neither product changes a game’s decision to accept or reject keyboard input.
A practical buying decision
- Define the primary task. Select chat, browsing and text entry if that is what you need; select a particular game only after verifying that title’s keyboard behavior.
- Pick Bluetooth or USB. Bluetooth favors distance and a clean setup; USB favors immediate text entry with no pairing.
- Verify model evidence. For the Sony option, check the CECH-ZKB1 suffix and the 3.60-or-later software requirement. For a generic model, confirm Bluetooth HID and the manufacturer’s PS3 instructions.
- Budget for uncertainty with older hardware. Inspect battery contacts and key function, and use a returnable listing when possible.
- Keep a controller. It remains necessary for titles that ignore keyboard gameplay and for applications that do not accept the Sony controller mapping.
For most PS3 owners, the best value is the keyboard already proven to pair and type comfortably in the intended room. The CECH-ZKB1 is the strongest documented full-size match when you find a sound regional unit; a generic Bluetooth HID keyboard is a reasonable text-entry alternative; and a USB keyboard is the lowest-complexity fallback. None is a universal solution for PS3 gameplay, so choose on verified use rather than the word “perfect.”
