Short answer: a PS5 generally cannot run a PS3 disc. You can play a PS3 game on PS5 only when Sony currently offers that title in your region’s PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog with a Stream option. RPCS3 is a separate Windows/Linux/macOS emulator whose results depend on the exact PS3 release and its current compatibility status. A game being available through PlayStation Plus does not prove that its disc works on PS5, and a game listed for RPCS3 is not automatically playable from start to finish.
Three different meanings of “works”
Questions such as “Can I play PS3 games on PS5?” combine three technically different routes:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Native PS5 playback: inserting an original PS3 disc into a PS5. This is not generally supported.
- PlayStation Plus Premium streaming: Sony runs an eligible PS3 title on its servers and streams the video and audio to a supported PS5. You do not run the PS3 version from your disc.
- RPCS3 emulation: a PC program emulates PS3 hardware. Compatibility is tracked per game and, in some cases, per disc or digital release.
Use the route that matches your goal. If you want to use a PS3 disc on a console, neither a Classics Catalog listing nor an RPCS3 entry changes the PS5’s disc compatibility. If you want the simplest way to play on a PS5, check the live regional catalog for streaming. If you want local PC play, inspect the exact RPCS3 compatibility entry before buying or dumping a game.

No, not as a general feature. PS3 software was designed for different hardware, and PS5 consoles do not provide broad native PS3-disc playback. A PS3 disc that fits physically in a disc-drive PS5 is not therefore an installable or playable PS5 game.

Digital backward compatibility and streaming are separate matters. When Sony includes a PS3 title in the Classics Catalog, the company identifies classic PS3 games as available via streaming only on its US PlayStation Plus catalog page. That means the PS5 receives a cloud stream rather than launching code from the PS3 disc. A disc purchase also does not unlock a streaming license automatically; the entitlement is determined by the game’s current listing and your PlayStation Plus plan and region.
Which PS3 games are available through PlayStation Plus Premium?
The accurate answer changes by country and over time: any PS3 title that is currently in your regional Classics Catalog and whose listing offers Stream can be played through the qualifying PlayStation Plus Premium entitlement. Catalog membership is not permanent, and the same title may be available in one market but absent in another.
Check a game before you rely on it
- Open Sony’s PlayStation Plus games catalog for your country, or search for the title from the PlayStation Plus area on your PS5.
- Search the exact game name. Watch for regional or edition differences, such as a remaster, a collection, or a version with a different publisher listing.
- Open the game’s detail page and confirm that your account’s plan is eligible and that a Stream button appears. A title page without that option is not evidence that PS3 streaming is available to you.
- Check the catalog again immediately before playing. Sony can rotate titles out, change regional availability, or alter which plans include a game.
Sony’s support instructions for the Classics Catalog also require a qualifying membership and broadband of at least 5 Mbps for streaming. That is a minimum connection requirement, not a promise of identical latency or image quality on every home network. The PS5 must be in a country where cloud streaming is offered, and your account must meet the local plan and age or account requirements described in Sony’s Classics Catalog support guide.

Examples from the 2022 launch announcement
Sony’s May 16, 2022 PlayStation Blog announcement named an early selection of PS3 games for Premium streaming in supported regions. Examples included Demon’s Souls, Ico, inFamous, Puppeteer, and Resistance 3.
That announcement is historical. It documents the launch model and an initial selection, not a current worldwide list. Do not assume that every example remains in your country’s catalog in 2026, or that a title listed in 2022 has the same entitlement today. Verify the live listing and the Stream option for your account.
How PlayStation Plus PS3 streaming behaves on PS5
What you receive
The PS5 starts a cloud session and receives streamed gameplay. Your controller input travels to the remote server, while the resulting video and audio return to the console. This is why a stable connection matters and why the feature does not turn a PS3 disc into a native PS5 installation.

What can prevent a launch
- The game is not in the Classics Catalog for your country.
- The title has left the catalog since you last checked.
- Your membership tier does not include the game.
- The listing offers a download or purchase in another version but no PS3 Stream option.
- Cloud streaming is not offered in your location.
- Your connection falls below the service’s 5 Mbps minimum or has high latency, congestion, or packet loss.
If a game disappears from search, treat that as an availability change rather than a console fault. If the Stream button is present but the session fails, test the network, sign out and back into the account, and check Sony’s service-status information before assuming the title is unsupported.

RPCS3 does not have a single “PS3 games supported” switch. Its project maintains a live compatibility database and a Game Compatibility guide. The database can list the disc and digital versions of the same game separately, so the title alone is not enough.
Find the exact release
- Identify the game’s region and release type. A disc release and a digital release may have different entries, even when their names look identical.
- Search the title in the official RPCS3 compatibility list.
- Open the matching entry and read its current status, date, hardware notes, patches, and user-reported issues.
- Match your own copy to that entry. A different region, update, or edition can produce different behavior.
- Check again after RPCS3 updates or game patches. Compatibility reports change as the emulator and its configuration improve.
What RPCS3 status labels mean for your decision
| Status | Practical interpretation | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Playable | The reported configuration is expected to support normal play, with no known issue that prevents completion in the listed conditions. | Read the entry’s notes anyway; settings, patches, and hardware can still matter. |
| Ingame | The game reaches gameplay but has significant problems or has not been confirmed to be fully completable. | Expect glitches, crashes, missing effects, or a progression blocker unless the latest notes say otherwise. |
| Intro | The software gets through an opening sequence but does not establish reliable gameplay. | Do not treat it as a usable playthrough. |
| Loadable | The title loads far enough to be recognized, without demonstrating a functional game session. | Consider it experimental rather than playable. |
| Nothing | The listed build does not currently reach a meaningful running state. | Do not buy or prepare it expecting a working RPCS3 experience. |
These labels are not interchangeable. “Listed,” “Loadable,” and “Ingame” are not synonyms for “finished.” For a purchase, setup, or recommendation, report the exact release and the status shown in the live entry, not just the fact that RPCS3 contains the game.
PS Plus streaming versus RPCS3
| Route | Where the game runs | What “works” means | Primary checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 with PlayStation Plus Premium | Sony’s cloud servers | The PS3 title is currently streamable to a supported PS5 in your region and plan. | Regional catalog listing, current membership eligibility, Stream button, and cloud-streaming availability. |
| RPCS3 on PC | Your computer through emulation | The exact disc or digital release reaches the compatibility status reported by RPCS3. | Exact release, current status, notes, game updates, and your PC configuration. |
| PS3 disc in PS5 | Not supported as general native playback | No broad compatibility path exists simply by inserting the disc. | Look for an explicitly supported PS5 edition or a current streaming listing instead. |
The two working routes also have different trade-offs. Streaming avoids emulator configuration and uses a PS5, but it requires an active entitlement, an available catalog entry, and a suitable internet connection. RPCS3 offers local execution and does not depend on a rotating cloud catalog, but setup, legal ownership or dumping of your software, PC performance, patches, and per-game issues all matter. Neither route should be described as native PS5 playback.
A reliable workflow for a named game
When someone asks, “Does this PS3 game work on PS5 or RPCS3?”, use this order so that a current catalog result is not confused with an emulator report.
Recommended Free Tools
- Write down the exact title and edition. Include region, disc or digital format, and whether it is a remaster or collection.
- Check PS5 streaming first. Search the regional PlayStation Plus catalog and verify the Stream control while signed into the account that will play.
- Check the RPCS3 entry separately. Search the exact release in the live compatibility database and record the status and notes.
- Label the result precisely. Say “streamable on PS5 in this region,” “RPCS3 status: Playable,” or “RPCS3 status: Ingame,” rather than the vague word “works.”
- Record the date. Catalog membership and emulator reports are moving targets. A dated check lets you spot when an answer has become stale.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a Classics Catalog game runs from a disc
The catalog’s PS3 offering is streaming-only. Owning the disc does not convert it into a PS5-native install. Use the Stream option or locate a separately released PS5 version.

Copying the 2022 launch list as a current catalog
The launch announcement is useful historical context, but it does not establish present availability in every country. Link readers to the current catalog and include the region and date of any availability claim.
Calling every RPCS3 entry playable
RPCS3’s status scale intentionally separates completion-ready reports from titles that only reach an intro or loading screen. Always include the label and read the game-specific notes.
Ignoring release differences
Disc and digital editions can have separate compatibility entries. A report for one region or release is not proof for another. Match the title identification code or release details shown by the database whenever possible.

The stated 5 Mbps minimum is only the starting requirement. Wi-Fi interference, household traffic, distance from the streaming server, and latency can affect responsiveness even when a speed test exceeds that number. Use wired networking or a strong local connection when troubleshooting, and verify that the service is supported in your country.
Bottom line for each question
- Can PS5 play PS3 discs? Generally no; inserting the disc is not a native compatibility method.
- Which PS3 games can PS5 play? The titles currently shown in your regional PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog with a Stream option, subject to the eligible Premium plan and cloud availability.
- Which PS3 games work on RPCS3? Only the exact releases whose current compatibility entries indicate an appropriate status; “Playable” is materially different from “Ingame,” “Intro,” “Loadable,” or “Nothing.”
For a dependable answer, check Sony’s live catalog and RPCS3’s live entry independently, state the region and release, and attach the date of the check. That is the only way to keep a PS3 compatibility answer accurate as catalogs and emulator reports change.
