Short answer: PS5SX2, an unofficial PS2 emulator for jailbroken PS5 consoles, is reported to read physical PS2 DVD-format game discs from the built-in optical drive or a USB optical drive, including discs from different regions. The important distinction is the disc’s physical format. Most PS2 games were distributed on DVD-ROM, while a smaller group used CD-ROM. The reported PS5SX2 support applies to DVD-format game discs. CD-based PS2 games cannot be read directly because the PS5 optical hardware does not support ordinary audio/data CDs. Sony’s official PS5 media documentation also lists CD as unsupported; that documentation concerns media playback and does not certify PS2 emulation.

DVD-based PS2 games
DVD-ROM is the physical format to try first. The reported implementation can obtain the game from an inserted PS2 DVD in the internal drive, and reporting also describes use of an external USB optical drive. No particular USB-drive model or compatibility list has been established, so an external drive should be treated as an additional variable rather than a guaranteed solution.
A disc that is physically readable can still fail to boot. PS5SX2 is homebrew, its disc path depends on the emulator and mounting components, and individual games may expose bugs that another title does not. A successful read is evidence that the drive and setup can access the media; it is not a promise of perfect emulation.
CD-based PS2 games
CD-ROM titles are the hard physical limitation. The PS5 drive’s inability to read standard CDs means PS5SX2 cannot load those games directly from a CD, regardless of the game’s region. This is a hardware/media issue, not a setting that can be fixed by changing an emulator option.

Do PS2 discs from another region work?
They are reported to work across regions with PS5SX2. Tom’s Hardware’s coverage says PS2 discs from all regions reportedly function, which suggests the emulator is not enforcing the same retail-region restriction readers may remember from older console hardware.
That statement has a lower level of confirmation than the format information. The PS5SX2 project README reviewed for this guide lists supported image formats and setup requirements but does not independently document a region matrix. Treat cross-region operation as reported emulator behavior, not a guarantee for every title, BIOS combination, video mode or firmware.
Region also does not override the media limitation. A Japanese, North American or European PS2 game on DVD may be usable if the rest of the setup works; a CD-ROM title from any of those regions still cannot be read directly by the PS5 optical drive.

Do not confuse these four file types with physical media standards. ISO, CHD, CSO and ZSO are game-image files. They are the route for a CD-based game that the PS5 cannot read as a disc, as well as an alternative for DVD games when you prefer file loading.

What a jailbroken PS5 needs before PS5SX2 can load a game
The project README identifies a specific homebrew stack. It says users need:
- A jailbroken PS5 with a firmware and exploit environment that the user can actually run. The project’s test notes are not a promise that every current firmware can be jailbroken.
- The PS5SX2 Helper payload loaded with kstuff.
- ShadowMountPlus.
- Your own PS2 BIOS dump.
- Your own PS2 game discs or legally created game images.
PS5SX2 does not bundle BIOS files, games or keys. Use dumps made from media you are entitled to use and check the law where you live. Downloading a BIOS or game image from an unlicensed source can create legal and security risks, and it is not required to explain which formats the emulator supports.
Firmware and console testing reported by the project
The project says development took place on a PS5 Pro running firmware 11.40. It also reports testing by other users on PS5 models, including a Slim, across firmware 6.02 through 12.70. That range is project-reported test coverage, not a compatibility guarantee and not proof that a jailbreak is available for every release. Check the current PS5SX2 documentation and your console’s exact model and firmware before changing system software.

How to try a PS2 DVD or image
The exact payload menus and mounting sequence can change as the homebrew project evolves, so use the project’s current README for the on-console commands. The decision process is stable:

- Identify the source. Confirm whether the physical game is DVD-ROM or CD-ROM. A CD cannot be made readable by inserting it into the PS5 drive.
- Confirm the jailbroken environment. Make sure your PS5 is running a supported jailbreak setup for its exact firmware and that you understand how to recover if homebrew does not start.
- Load the required components. Start PS5SX2 Helper with kstuff and use ShadowMountPlus as specified by the project documentation. Missing or incorrectly loaded components can prevent the emulator from seeing a disc or image.
- Provide the BIOS. Point PS5SX2 to your own PS2 BIOS dump. The emulator cannot legally supply one for you.
- Choose the loading method. Insert a DVD-format PS2 disc into the internal drive, connect a USB optical drive if that is your tested route, or select an ISO, CHD, CSO or ZSO image from the location supported by your setup.
- Start the title and record the result. Note the PS5 model, firmware, PS5SX2 build, BIOS region and loading method. Those details make a reproducible compatibility report if the game fails.

How reliable is PS2 compatibility on PS5SX2?
PS5SX2 describes itself as a passion project and warns users to “Expect rough edges.” The README says work toward compatibility with the full PS2 library is ongoing. That means the supported-format list answers “what the loader can accept,” not “which games are guaranteed to run perfectly.”
Compatibility can differ by game, disc versus image route, BIOS, console model, firmware and emulator build. There is no compatibility percentage or library-wide success rate established here. A DVD-format game may be readable but still encounter graphics, audio, timing, save or performance problems during emulation.
PCSX2’s general guidance discusses original discs and dumped ISO/CSO images on PC, including cases where images avoid drive-speed problems. That PC-specific advice should not be treated as a measured claim about PS5SX2. On PS5, choose the route that your build and hardware actually support, then document the result.
