Start with app permissions for location, camera, microphone, photos, contacts, and calendars. Remove access an app does not need, use approximate or while-in-use location when that is sufficient, and then review separate controls for cross-app tracking, advertising IDs, and location history. The exact menus differ on Android, iPhone, Mac, and Windows, and Windows privacy lists do not cover every traditional desktop program.
The highest-value privacy changes
Privacy settings are most useful when they limit a specific capability without breaking functions you deliberately use. Review each app rather than disabling every sensor globally. The choices below are the best starting order.

| Control | Recommended default | What may change when access is denied |
|---|---|---|
| Location | While using the app; approximate location unless precise positioning is necessary | Maps, ride-hailing, weather, delivery, emergency and geofencing features may be less accurate or unavailable |
| Camera | Off unless the app has a clear camera function | Video calls, scanning, augmented-reality and photo features can stop working |
| Microphone | Off unless the app records, calls or accepts voice input | Calls, voice search, dictation and recording may fail |
| Photos and media | Give access only when selecting or saving media; use limited selection where offered | Photo upload, editing and document-attachment features may be restricted |
| Contacts and calendar | Off unless contact lookup, invitations or calendar integration is intentional | Address-book matching, sharing suggestions and event synchronization may not work |
| Cross-app tracking or advertising ID | Disable requests and identifiers you do not want used for advertising | Ads may become less personalized, but the number of ads usually does not fall |
Permission controls limit the access they name. They do not stop websites, logged-in services or an app’s own servers from collecting information that the service can obtain through other means. Treat them as targeted reductions, not a universal “stop tracking” switch.

Android: audit permissions, location and the Privacy Dashboard
Android menu names vary by manufacturer and release, but the permission model is consistent enough to audit app by app.

Review sensitive permissions
- Open Settings and look for Privacy or Security & privacy.
- Open Permission manager.
- Choose a category such as Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, or Photos and videos.
- Open each listed app and change the choice to Don’t allow, Allow only while using the app, or another available option that matches the feature you actually use.
For an app that only needs a general area, select approximate location. Keep precise location for navigation and other functions where a street-level position is genuinely required. Android can automatically reset permissions for unused apps, which limits stale access without requiring a monthly manual review.
Use the Privacy Dashboard as an activity check
Open Settings > Privacy (or the equivalent privacy section) and select Privacy Dashboard. Google’s documentation says the dashboard can show permission activity for the last seven days on Android 13 and the last 24 hours on Android 12. Use that history to investigate an app that accessed a sensor at an unexpected time, then change its permission from the category screen.
Android displays a green indicator when the camera or microphone is in use. The system also provides controls to disable camera or microphone access at the device level; use those controls temporarily when you need a hard stop, then restore them before an intentional call or recording.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFind Android’s advertising controls
Search Settings for Ad Privacy. The exact path is not universal across Android versions and manufacturers. These controls can limit certain advertising-related data uses, but they do not promise that all tracking ends or that advertisements disappear.

iPhone: separate app permissions from cross-app tracking
Audit location and other data access
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Review Location Services, then open each app.
- Choose Never, Ask Next Time Or When I Share, While Using the App, or another option that fits the task.
- When an app does not need an exact position, turn off its Precise Location switch. The app can then receive an approximate area instead.
- Return to Privacy & Security and inspect Camera, Microphone, Photos, Contacts, and Calendars individually.
Apple notes that some apps may not work unless Location Services is on. Denying access is therefore a functional choice: preserve permissions for navigation, emergency or delivery features you rely on, and remove them from apps that have no corresponding need.
Stop apps from requesting cross-app tracking
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.
- Review the decisions listed for individual apps.
- Turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track if you do not want apps to ask for this permission in the future.
This setting concerns tracking across other companies’ apps and websites. It is distinct from an app’s own location, camera or contact permission, so review both areas rather than treating one as a substitute for the other.
Mac: location controls and location history
The Mac setting path depends on macOS generation. On macOS 13 or later, use the following route:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Review every listed app and service, switching off access that is not needed.
Older releases use System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy, so do not expect the newer labels on an older Mac.

Check Significant Locations & Routes
Within Location Services, inspect Significant Locations & Routes if you do not want the Mac and associated Apple devices to retain frequently visited places for personalization. Apple says this information is encrypted and cannot be read by Apple. You can turn the feature off and clear its history from the same area.
Mac location controls cover location access specifically. Do not assume that a control shown on an iPhone has an identical name or scope on macOS; review each platform’s own list.
Windows 11: capability permissions, location and advertising ID
Review app capabilities
- Open Settings > Privacy & security.
- Under App permissions, open Camera, Microphone, Location, Contacts, and Calendar one at a time.
- Turn off access for apps that do not need the capability, or disable the broader app-access switch when you need a temporary device-wide block.
Microsoft states that when access is turned off for an app, that app cannot use the related data or feature. The qualification matters: these lists mainly govern Microsoft Store apps. Traditional desktop programs may not appear and may require privacy controls inside the program itself.
Inspect location use and cloud history
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Location.
- Review device and user location access, then inspect the individual app list.
- Check the recent precise-location activity shown on the page, where available.
- If you are signed in with a Microsoft account, review account location activity and clear stored activity when appropriate.
Microsoft says a signed-in user’s last-known location may be saved to the Microsoft account cloud when location services are enabled. Turning off one app’s permission does not erase that existing account history; use the account activity controls to clear it.

Limit advertising identifiers without expecting fewer ads
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > General.
- Turn off the advertising ID option if you do not want apps to use that identifier for personalized advertising.
- Review app-launch tracking in the same section and disable it if you do not want Windows using that signal for suggestions.
Microsoft explicitly says disabling the advertising ID does not reduce the number of advertisements and does not cover every form of interest-based advertising. It reduces use of that particular identifier, not advertising volume.
What Windows 10 changes
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Its labels and paths differ from Windows 11, and the same Store-app limitation applies. If the computer still runs Windows 10, use the privacy pages available on that installation and plan a supported upgrade rather than assuming a Windows 11 instruction will match exactly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between privacy and convenience
For every prompt, ask four questions before selecting Allow:
- What is exposed? A location, sensor, photo library, address book and calendar reveal different kinds of information.
- How much access is necessary? Prefer one-time, while-in-use, approximate or selected-item access over always-on, precise or full-library access when the platform offers that choice.
- Which app class is covered? Windows Store-app controls may not govern desktop software; a program’s own settings may be required.
- What will stop working? Check the feature you value before denying access, then test it once after changing the setting.
A sensible sequence is to deny first, reopen the feature, and grant the narrowest permission that makes it work. This avoids leaving broad access enabled merely because an app requested it during setup.
Best Value
When a privacy change breaks an app
The feature fails immediately
Return to that app’s permission page and grant the minimum required capability. For location, try while-in-use before always; for photos, select only the needed items where supported; for camera or microphone, enable access only while using the feature.
The app still behaves as if access is available
Force-close and reopen the app, then check its own in-app privacy settings. On Windows, look for a desktop program’s internal permissions because it may not be represented in the system capability list.
You want a clean review later
Use Android’s Privacy Dashboard activity history, iPhone’s per-app lists, Mac’s Location Services list, or Windows’ recent precise-location activity to identify unexpected use. Revoke the permission and uninstall an app whose function does not justify the data it requests.
Quick Recap
A practical maintenance schedule
- Today: Review location, camera and microphone for every installed app.
- This week: Check photos, contacts and calendars, then review iPhone Tracking, Android Ad Privacy, or Windows advertising ID and app-launch tracking.
- After installing an app: Deny optional prompts during setup and grant access only when a feature needs it.
- After an operating-system update: Recheck menu paths and high-risk permissions; manufacturers can rename or reorganize settings.
- When retiring an app: Revoke its permissions before uninstalling and clear related account activity where the service provides that option.
