The exact labels differ between iPhone, Android versions and Android manufacturers. Use the checklist below as a risk-based review, not a reason to disable every privacy-sensitive feature. Location, camera or microphone access can be necessary for apps you deliberately use.

1. Set the strongest screen lock you can use reliably
Your screen lock is the foundation for nearly every other protection. Choose a long PIN or a password rather than a short, easily guessed code. Then enroll Face ID, Touch ID or Android biometrics if your phone supports them. Biometrics make everyday unlocking practical while the passcode or password remains the fallback and the underlying protection.
Google says an Android screen lock does more than stop someone opening the handset: it also protects certain private data used by Google services, including saved passwords, passkeys, Maps Timeline backups and Find Hub location data. That makes a weak PIN a risk to credentials and account-related information, not just to local photos.

Do not share the passcode with people who do not need it, and avoid patterns or numbers connected to birthdays, addresses or repeating digits. Store recovery information for your Apple Account or Google Account separately from the phone so losing the device does not also remove your route back into the account.
Biometric convenience has limits
Biometrics reduce the temptation to leave the phone unlocked, but the operating system can still require the passcode or password after a restart, after a period of time, or following certain security events. Treat the passcode as the master credential and make it something you can remember without writing it on the device.
2. Install updates and inspect the security status page
Before installing all your apps, open the phone’s update screen and apply available operating-system and security updates. Updates fix vulnerabilities, improve theft protections and can add controls that were not present when the phone left the factory. Keep automatic updates enabled when the option is available, then revisit the page after the initial setup because a new phone may still be waiting for a later patch.
Android
On Android 13 and later, open Settings > Security and privacy. The combined page can show warnings and recommendations, screen-lock status, account security, system-update status, Play Protect or app-security information, device-finding options, privacy controls and lock-screen notification settings. Android 12 and earlier may show separate Security and Privacy sections. Manufacturers can rearrange these menus, so use Settings search if the wording differs.
iPhone
Use the iPhone’s Software Update screen in Settings and install the latest version offered for your model. Also check Apple Account security, including two-factor authentication, before relying on theft protections that require it. Keep enough free storage for updates and restart the phone if an update reports that installation is waiting.

3. Audit every app’s sensitive permissions
During setup, apps often request access before you know whether you will use the related feature. Review permissions after the initial wave of installations and again after adding an app. Pay particular attention to location, camera, microphone, photos, contacts, calendars and Bluetooth or nearby-device access.
Android permission controls
Android’s permission manager lets you review access by app or by permission type. Depending on the permission and Android version, choices can include while using the app, one time or deny. For location, you can often choose approximate instead of precise location. Grant background access only when an app’s function genuinely depends on it, such as an activity tracker that must record movement while the screen is off.

Open the Privacy Dashboard to see recent use of the camera, microphone and location. This is more useful than reading a permission list once: an unexpected access event gives you a concrete app to investigate. Android may also reset permissions for apps you have not used for a while; check the app’s status before assuming a previously granted permission remains active.
iPhone permission controls
On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security and review each relevant category. In Location Services, select an app and choose the least access that still supports its purpose, such as while-in-use access instead of continuous background access. Apple also provides controls for tracking and other data categories, and it can show reminders when an app has used location in the background.
Match access to the job
A navigation app cannot provide turn-by-turn directions without location, and a video-call app cannot make a video call without camera access. The safer decision is therefore not “deny everything”; it is “grant the narrowest access that still performs the task.” Recheck permissions when an app changes purpose, after a major update, or when you stop using the feature that justified access.

4. Make deliberate location and tracking choices
Location is both a privacy signal and a core phone function. Maps, emergency services, weather, ride services and fitness tools may need it, while a simple note-taking app usually does not. Prefer approximate location when a city-level result is sufficient. Use one-time access for a single search or check, and avoid background access unless the app must operate while you are not actively using it.

Review system-level location services as well as individual app permissions. Turning off one app’s permission does not necessarily stop that app from retaining information already stored in its own account. Conversely, disabling a system feature can break functions you expect, such as device finding or emergency location. Change one control at a time and test the feature you rely on.
5. Reduce what a locked screen reveals
Notifications can expose message text, one-time sign-in codes, appointment details and account alerts to anyone who can see the locked display. In the phone’s notification and lock-screen settings, choose whether to hide sensitive content, show only that a notification exists, or display full previews. The labels and exact behavior vary by iOS version, Android version and manufacturer.
Hiding previews lowers exposure if the phone is left on a desk or lost, but it adds a step: you must unlock the phone to read the message. A practical compromise is to conceal content on the lock screen while allowing notifications to appear, then permit previews only for apps whose messages are not sensitive.
6. Turn on device finding and theft protections
Enable the built-in finding service before you need it. It can help locate, lock or erase a missing phone, but it does not guarantee recovery and it cannot prevent every form of compromise. Confirm that the phone has a screen lock, an active account and the connectivity needed by the service.

Android theft features
Review Theft protection and Find Hub from the Security and privacy area or Settings search. Google lists protections such as Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, Failed Authentication Lock and Remote Lock. Availability depends on the Android version and model; some controls require Android 15 or later.
Remote Lock has specific prerequisites: a screen lock, an active SIM, a verified phone number, Find Hub enabled and an internet connection. If one of those is missing, the remote action may not work when the phone is stolen. Check the feature’s own status page rather than assuming that every Android phone supports every theft control.
iPhone Stolen Device Protection
On an iPhone running iOS 17.3 or later, consider Stolen Device Protection. It requires a device passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, Apple Account two-factor authentication, Location Services and Find My. For selected sensitive actions, the feature requires biometric authentication without passcode fallback. Some account or security changes can also trigger a one-hour security delay followed by another biometric check.
The protection can use a location-dependent default, or you can choose the Always option for the same safeguards everywhere. Always adds friction even at familiar locations, so choose it only if the extra checks fit how you use the phone.
7. Keep device permissions separate from account privacy
Blocking an app’s access to contacts, photos or location controls what the operating system allows at that moment. It does not automatically delete data the app previously uploaded, change advertising choices or remove information held in the app’s own account. Apple specifically directs users to adjust third-party account settings separately.
After changing device permissions, open the app’s account or privacy page and review retention, sharing, personalization and sign-in options. Delete data or close the account there when that is your goal. This two-layer review prevents a common mistake: assuming a denied permission has erased historical information.
Android and iPhone: where the controls differ

Neither platform is categorically safer for every person. Compare the permission granularity you will actually use, the audit information you can understand, and whether your model supports the theft controls you expect.
8. A maintenance routine that prevents settings from drifting
Privacy setup is not a one-time task. Once a month, review the Privacy Dashboard or iPhone privacy categories, remove apps you no longer use, and check for newly granted background access. After a major operating-system update, revisit lock-screen notifications and theft-protection pages because menu names and defaults can change.

Grant the narrow permission needed for the feature, test it, and then return to the permission page. If a theft feature is unavailable, verify the phone model, operating-system version, screen lock, account verification, SIM and connectivity requirements before concluding that the service is broken.
If the phone is lost, use the enabled finding service promptly to locate, lock or erase it, then change important account passwords from another trusted device. A screen lock and theft feature reduce exposure; they do not replace account recovery planning or two-factor authentication.
