Opera Air hides ads and notification prompts by default, but you should still verify its privacy controls. For a strong everyday setup, enable Block ads and Block trackers, block third-party cookies, reject notification requests, keep pop-up blocking on, and use narrowly targeted site exceptions when a trusted service needs them. Automatic deletion on exit is optional because it improves local privacy while making you sign in more often.
What Opera Air does before you change anything
Opera describes Air as a free browser designed to reduce distractions and says, “By default, ads and notifications stay out of sight.” That statement describes the browser-level starting point, not a substitute for checking every detailed permission. A site can still have an existing exception, a session cookie can still preserve a login, and the exact wording of a control can vary with the Air release or operating system.

The useful approach is to treat the defaults as a starting layer, then review the settings that control four different things: advertising scripts, tracking technologies, stored site data, and permission prompts. These controls overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Blocking an ad does not automatically clear a cookie; rejecting a notification prompt does not remove a site that was already allowed.
The recommended baseline, in one pass
Open Opera Air’s Settings and work through this order:
#1 Best Overall
- [Ultra-Lightweight Ear Buds Designed for Small Ears] Each earbud weighs only 3.7g and features a compact, ergonomic in-ear design made especially for small ears. - [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Under Privacy protection, confirm Block ads is enabled.
- In the same privacy area, enable Block trackers.
- Open Manage lists under ad blocking and check the built-in filter lists before adding any custom rules.
- In Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > Site settings > Cookies and site data, consider blocking third-party cookies.
- In Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > Site settings > Notifications, turn off Ask before sending if you want notification requests rejected by default, then remove unwanted allowed sites.
- Leave Pop-ups and redirects blocked and add an exception only for a trusted workflow that genuinely needs it.
- Use clear-on-exit deletion only for data categories you can afford to lose.
Start with the first six controls. They reduce tracking and interruptions without routinely destroying your sign-ins. Add automatic deletion after deciding whether the privacy benefit is worth the extra login and setup work.
1. Confirm Opera Air’s ad blocker
Where to find it
Open Settings, locate Privacy protection, and make sure Block ads is on. Opera’s help material describes the blocker as preventing advertising scripts. When blocking is active, Opera shows a shield badge in the address bar; that badge is a quick way to check the current site rather than reopening Settings.
Handle a site that breaks
If a page loses a required checkout panel, sign-in control, video, or other component, use the shield badge to inspect the site-level controls. Turn blocking off for that site only, or add the site through Manage exceptions. Avoid disabling the blocker globally to repair one page: a global switch affects every site and removes the protection you wanted elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExceptions are also the practical way to support a site whose advertising or embedded content you intentionally want to load. Keep each exception limited to a domain you recognize, and remove it when the temporary workflow ends.

2. Enable tracker blocking separately
What this control covers
In Settings > Basic > Privacy protection—or the equivalent Privacy protection section in your Air version—enable Block trackers. Opera says this feature targets analytic scripts, tracking pixels, and other data-collection methods. It is a different control from ad blocking: a page can contain tracking code even when no obvious advertisement is displayed.
Use narrow exceptions
Some sites may depend on an analytics or embedded-service request for a page feature. If that happens, create an exception only for the trusted site involved. Do not treat a broad allow rule as a troubleshooting shortcut; it can restore data collection across pages you did not intend to exempt.
3. Review the filter lists before changing rules
Inspect the built-in lists
Go to Privacy protection > Block ads > Manage lists. Opera’s security help identifies EasyList and NoCoin as enabled by default. EasyList supplies common advertising filters. NoCoin is intended to stop cryptojacking scripts—code that misuses a visitor’s device resources for cryptocurrency mining.

When a custom list is appropriate
Add a custom list only when you have a specific, trusted source and a clear reason to use it. Custom rules can cause page breakage, and stacking several lists can make it harder to identify which rule caused a problem. If a newly added list creates missing buttons or layout errors, remove or disable that list first, update the page, and then test the site again before changing unrelated privacy controls.
4. Tighten cookies without losing every login
Block third-party cookies
Open Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > Site settings > Cookies and site data. Consider enabling Block third-party cookies. Opera Help explains that this permits cookies for the site you are visiting while restricting cookies supplied by other sites embedded in that page. The main privacy gain is reduced cross-site tracking; the trade-off is that an embedded service may no longer remember a preference or recognize a session.
Apply the setting first, then use a site exception if a service you trust needs third-party storage to function. An exception is more controlled than turning the protection off for every site.

Clear cookies and site data when you quit
The same cookie area can offer Clear cookies and site data when you quit. Enabling it reduces the amount of persistent site data left on the device after you close Air, but it also removes the state that keeps many sites signed in. Expect more frequent authentication and possible loss of saved site preferences. Use an exception for a service that must maintain a persistent session, and do not enable this option merely because third-party-cookie blocking feels insufficient: they solve different problems.

5. Stop website notification requests
Set the default behavior
Navigate to Settings > Advanced > Privacy & security > Site settings > Notifications. Turn off Ask before sending when you want notification prompts rejected by default. This prevents a page from repeatedly interrupting you with an approval dialog.
Clean up permissions already granted
Changing the prompt behavior does not necessarily revoke permissions that were granted earlier. Review the allowed-site list in the Notifications panel and remove entries you no longer need. Keep an explicit allow rule only for a service whose alerts you actually use, such as a work system or a time-sensitive account. If an unwanted site remains listed, remove its permission rather than waiting for the next prompt.
Notification control is separate from ad blocking. A site can show no conventional ads and still send browser notifications if it has permission, so check both panels when reducing interruptions.

In Site settings > Pop-ups and redirects, leave blocking enabled for normal browsing. Pop-ups can be used for legitimate sign-in, payment, or document workflows, but allowing them globally exposes every site to the same behavior. If a trusted service requires one, add a site exception and remove it after the workflow is complete. This per-site approach preserves the default protection for unrelated pages.

7. Decide whether to delete data on exit
What Opera Air can clear
Opera’s privacy documentation describes automatic deletion on exit for several categories:
- Browsing history
- Downloads
- Cookies and site data
- Cached files
- Passwords
- Autofill data
- Site settings
- Hosted app data
Select only the categories you can afford to lose. Clearing history or cache may be acceptable on a shared computer, while clearing passwords, autofill, site settings, or hosted app data can create avoidable setup and sign-in work. Opera Help describes clear-on-exit as deletion when the browser closes, so the effect is automatic rather than a one-time cleanup.
A practical choice for different devices
On a shared or public-facing device, clearing cookies, site data, and history can reduce what the next user sees. On a personal machine where you need uninterrupted work, leave credentials and site settings intact and rely on third-party-cookie and tracker blocking instead. The right choice depends on who can access the device and how often you are willing to authenticate again.
How the settings trade privacy for convenience
| Control | Privacy or interruption benefit | Main trade-off | Best exception strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Block ads | Stops advertising scripts and reduces page clutter | Some page components can fail | Use the shield badge or Manage exceptions for one trusted site |
| Block trackers | Restricts analytics scripts, tracking pixels, and other collection methods | A feature that depends on a third-party request may stop working | Allow only the trusted site that needs the request |
| Block third-party cookies | Reduces cross-site tracking while retaining cookies for the site being visited | Embedded services may lose sessions or preferences | Add a narrowly scoped site exception |
| Reject notification requests | Stops permission prompts and unwanted browser alerts | You may miss alerts until you explicitly allow a needed service | Keep allow rules only for services whose notifications matter |
| Block pop-ups and redirects | Reduces disruptive windows and unsolicited navigation | A legitimate sign-in or payment flow may need a pop-up | Permit the specific trusted workflow, not all sites |
| Clear data on exit | Leaves less browsing and session data on the device | More sign-ins and lost preferences; clearing passwords or settings adds friction | Select only necessary categories and exempt services that require persistence |
What to do when a site stops working
- Identify the symptom. A missing advertisement is not a failure; a missing checkout button, sign-in window, or embedded player may indicate a blocked request.
- Check the shield badge. Review the site-level ad-blocking state and temporarily allow the trusted site if the problem is clearly tied to blocking.
- Review tracker and cookie controls. If a page loads but cannot keep a session or an embedded service is blank, test a narrow tracker or cookie exception rather than changing every site.
- Check pop-ups and redirects. For a workflow that opens a separate window, add an exception in that panel and retry the action.
- Undo the newest filter change. If the problem began after adding a custom list or rule, disable that addition first. Custom rules are a known source of breakage.
- Revoke stale permissions separately. If alerts continue, inspect Notifications and remove old allowed entries; changing ad settings will not revoke notification permission.
After each change, reload the affected page and test the exact action that failed. One change at a time makes it possible to keep the strongest protections everywhere else.
A final verification checklist
- The Privacy protection panel shows Block ads enabled.
- Block trackers is enabled in the Basic or equivalent Air privacy section.
- Manage lists shows the expected built-in lists, including EasyList and NoCoin, with no unexplained custom list enabled.
- Block third-party cookies is enabled if reducing cross-site tracking is more important than maximum embedded-service compatibility.
- Ask before sending is off in Notifications when you want requests rejected by default, and the allowed list contains only services you deliberately approved.
- Pop-ups and redirects remain blocked except for named, trusted workflows.
- Clear-on-exit categories match what you are prepared to lose, especially passwords, autofill, site settings, and hosted app data.
What Opera Air’s privacy controls do not guarantee
These settings reduce advertising, common tracking mechanisms, unsolicited prompts, and retained browser data. They do not make every website anonymous, and they do not turn every site exception into a risk-free choice. A site you allow can still use the capabilities you granted it, so exceptions should be reviewed like permissions rather than treated as permanent fixes.
Opera’s security information also lists site settings, browsing-data controls, and a built-in VPN among its privacy tools. A VPN and browser blocking address different layers: the controls in this guide govern what pages load, store, or request inside Air, while a network privacy tool does not replace careful cookie, tracker, notification, and exception choices.
Finally, Opera’s generic ad-blocker help uses marketing language about being “up to three times faster.” That is not a controlled, Opera Air-specific measurement and should not be treated as a guaranteed speed improvement. The dependable reason to enable these controls is reduced tracking and interruption, with site-specific exceptions available when compatibility requires them.
