Which Plex Settings Should You Change on an Onn Streaming Box?

For an Onn streaming box, use Plex’s Android TV settings as your starting point: leave Direct Play and Direct Stream enabled, keep H.264 Maximum Level at 4.1, set Home and Remote quality according to the connection actually available, and change subtitle burn, audio passthrough or refresh-rate switching only when a specific playback symptom points to them. The right result still depends on your Onn generation, Plex app version, server, media file, network, television and audio connection.

A sensible starting profile

Plex documents Android TV settings rather than certifying every Onn model. The labels and available switches can therefore vary slightly with the app version and device generation. Open the Plex app’s Settings screen and use this baseline before troubleshooting a particular file.

Setting Starting choice Change it when
Home (local) quality High enough to preserve the original file when your home network can sustain it Playback pauses, the server transcodes unnecessarily, or your wireless link cannot keep up
Remote quality A level that fits the upload speed from the server and download speed at the Onn Remote playback buffers or repeatedly drops quality
Play smaller videos at original quality Enabled if you prefer avoiding conversion for files below the selected quality Disable it if those files pause because the original bitrate is still too high
Automatically Adjust Quality Optional, where supported Use it when you want Plex to react to changing bandwidth and your server can transcode
Direct Play Enabled Disable temporarily only to diagnose a compatibility problem
Direct Stream Enabled Rarely; investigate a container or track compatibility issue
Burn Subtitles Automatic (Plex’s default) Test another option when subtitles trigger a video transcode or buffering
Passthrough Match the capabilities of the TV, soundbar or receiver Change it when multichannel audio is silent, distorted or unsupported
Refresh Rate Switch Try enabled for judder caused by frame-rate mismatch Turn it off if display or audio hand-offs become unreliable
H.264 Maximum Level 4.1, Plex’s recommended default Only for a specific compatibility test
Allow Insecure Connections Never, the default Only while diagnosing a secure-connection failure and understanding the security reduction

This is a troubleshooting baseline, not a universal “best” configuration. Record which file, audio track, subtitle track and playback route produce the problem before changing several switches at once.

How Plex decides whether to play or convert a file

Direct Play

With Direct Play, Plex sends a file that the client can decode and present without changing it. It uses the least server processing and preserves the source video and audio, but the container, codecs, subtitle format and bitrate all have to be acceptable to the Onn’s Plex client and the connected equipment.

Direct Stream

Direct Stream keeps compatible audio and video streams but repackages them into a container the client understands. It normally uses little processing and does not reduce video quality. It is different from a full video transcode: the server is changing the wrapper, not recompressing the picture.

Full video transcode

If the video codec, bitrate, container or selected subtitle cannot be handled directly, Plex converts the video. A selected image-based subtitle can be enough to force this decision even when the video itself is compatible. Check the playback information in the Plex app or server dashboard to see whether the session says Direct Play, Direct Stream or Transcode; that observation is more useful than changing settings blindly.

Choose local and remote quality for the connection

Home streaming

Plex says local quality can usually be set high because the server and client share a home network. “High” is not a promise that every wireless link can carry every file. A crowded 2.4 GHz network, a weak signal, or a server connected through a slow link can still make a high-bitrate remux pause. Start high, then step down only if the actual session shows buffering or the network cannot sustain the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote streaming

Remote quality must fit the complete path: the server’s upload capacity, the internet route and the Onn’s download connection. Selecting a quality above that capacity causes slow starts, frequent pauses or repeated quality changes. Lower the remote value one step at a time and retest the same scene. Do not treat a setting that works on your home Wi-Fi as evidence that it will work when travelling or watching from another household.

Original quality for smaller videos

The option usually labelled Play smaller videos at original quality tells Plex to avoid conversion for files below the selected quality threshold. That can preserve quality and reduce server work, but Plex warns that the original stream can still be too demanding for the connection and may pause. If a “small” file continues to stall, turn this option off or choose a lower quality so the server can produce a stream the link can carry.

Automatic quality adjustment

Supported Plex apps can adjust quality as conditions change. Plex notes that this feature requires a server capable of transcoding. If the server cannot transcode, automatic adjustment cannot manufacture a lower-bitrate stream. Use it as a convenience after confirming that the server has sufficient CPU or hardware-transcoding capacity, not as a cure for an overloaded server or unstable Wi-Fi.

If Plex buffers on the Onn

  1. Identify the route. Note whether the session is Home or Remote and whether other devices on the same network are also slow.
  2. Check the playback decision. Look for Direct Play, Direct Stream or Transcode in Plex’s playback details. A transcode may be caused by the video, audio or subtitle track rather than by the quality number.
  3. Test without subtitles. Stop playback, disable subtitles and replay the same timestamp. If buffering stops, subtitle processing is a likely trigger.
  4. Reduce the relevant quality value. Lower Remote quality for an off-site session; adjust Home quality only when the local link cannot sustain the file.
  5. Compare another file. A second movie or episode can reveal whether the problem is tied to one codec, bitrate, audio track or subtitle format.
  6. Change one setting at a time. Restart playback after each change so you can associate the result with the correct cause.

Do not disable Direct Play as a first response. Plex says most people should leave Direct Play and Direct Stream enabled; disabling Direct Play forces transcoding and can make a weak server work harder.

Subtitle settings: readability versus server load

In Android TV’s Burn Subtitles setting, the choices are Always, Automatic and Only image formats. Automatic is Plex’s default. Plex explains that Automatic burns image-based subtitles such as VOBSUB and PGS, along with complex ASS/SSA subtitles. Burning places the subtitle into the video picture, which generally requires a full video transcode.

When to test a different subtitle choice

If playback is smooth with subtitles off but buffers when they are enabled, first select a text-based subtitle format when one is available. If that is not possible, test Only image formats or another available burn choice and watch the server’s playback decision. Avoiding burn-in can reduce server load, but no setting can make every subtitle format render directly on every client. Complex styling and image subtitles may still require conversion.

Subtitle appearance is also part of the decision. A setting that avoids transcoding may omit positioning, fonts or effects that the original subtitle track intended. Choose the format that remains readable on your television, then confirm whether the server is converting the video.

Audio passthrough, silence and DTS reports

Passthrough presents multichannel audio streams as-is instead of asking Plex to decode and convert them. It is appropriate only when the entire downstream chain—the Onn, HDMI or optical connection, television, soundbar or receiver, and selected codec—can accept that stream. If any part cannot decode it, you may hear silence, stereo fallback or an error.

Audio Boost is a different control. Plex describes it for audio that is already being transcoded and downmixed from surround sound to stereo. It does not make an unsupported passthrough codec compatible.

A cautious DTS troubleshooting sequence

  1. Confirm which audio track is selected and whether the television or audio system advertises support for that DTS format.
  2. Test the same video with a known-compatible stereo or Dolby track, if present. If that works, the issue is likely codec or downstream support rather than video quality.
  3. With passthrough enabled, try the audio-output choices that match your physical connection. Recheck the receiver or television input mode after each change.
  4. If the equipment cannot decode DTS, disable passthrough so Plex can transcode the audio, provided the server can do so.
  5. Return to the original choice if it creates delay, distortion or unnecessary transcoding.

A Plex forum thread titled “Onn. 4k Plus device does not play DTS,” posted in August 2025, contains user reports of success with an optical passthrough selection while DTS was deselected, and another participant suggested disabling passthrough so the audio would transcode. Those are anecdotal, model- and setup-specific workarounds—not official Plex instructions or a guaranteed fix for every Onn box. Treat the connected audio device’s codec support as the deciding evidence.

Refresh-rate switching and visible judder

Refresh Rate Switch changes the display refresh rate to match, or approximate, the video’s frame rate. This can reduce judder when a 24-frame-per-second film is shown through a display mode that does not divide cleanly into that frame rate. It addresses motion cadence, not network throughput or server transcoding.

Enable it when motion looks uneven despite a stable, direct-play session. Allow the television a moment to change modes, then check a film and a television episode with different frame rates. If enabling the switch causes a blank screen, an audio drop during transitions or unreliable mode changes, turn it off and investigate the TV, receiver and HDMI chain. A refresh switch cannot cure buffering.

Leave H.264 Maximum Level at 4.1

Plex’s Android TV guidance recommends leaving H.264 Maximum Level at its default of 4.1. Plex explicitly says a higher value can be tried, but warns that playback problems may result. This is a compatibility limit, not a quality slider: raising it does not improve an ordinary file and should not be used as a blanket performance tweak. Change it only while diagnosing a particular H.264 file, and restore 4.1 if the test does not solve that file’s problem.

Allow Insecure Connections is a security decision

This setting controls whether Plex may fall back to an insecure connection when a secure connection fails. The choices are Never, On same network and Always; Never is the default. It does not increase decoding speed or fix a saturated internet link. If a connection error is specifically preventing access, test the least permissive option that addresses the problem, then return to Never when possible. Choosing Always weakens transport security and should be an informed troubleshooting step, not a routine optimization.

Variables that can change the result

Two Onn boxes sold under similar names can have different chipsets, firmware and audio behavior. The Plex Android TV documentation is therefore the relevant general guidance, not a certification of every generation. Also account for:

  • Server capability: subtitle or video transcoding may exceed the server’s CPU or hardware-transcoding capacity.
  • Media details: codec, level, bitrate, container, HDR format, audio codec and subtitle type determine compatibility.
  • Network path: local Wi-Fi conditions and remote upload/download capacity are separate constraints.
  • Display chain: a television, soundbar or receiver can reject an otherwise valid passthrough stream or refresh-rate change.
  • App and firmware versions: menu names and supported formats can change after updates.

For a reproducible diagnosis, write down the Onn model or generation, Plex app version, server platform, file details, selected audio and subtitle tracks, connection type and the exact symptom. That information is more actionable than a claim that one profile works for every household.

A compact decision checklist

  • Buffering only when away from home: lower Remote quality and verify the server’s upload path.
  • Buffering only with subtitles: test another subtitle format or burn option and inspect whether video transcoding starts.
  • No sound on a multichannel track: verify downstream codec support, then test passthrough against audio transcoding.
  • Choppy motion with an otherwise stable stream: test Refresh Rate Switch.
  • One H.264 file fails while others play: keep Maximum Level at 4.1 and investigate that file before trying a higher level.
  • Connection errors after secure negotiation: consider Allow Insecure Connections only as a limited diagnostic, with its security trade-off understood.
