Which Plex Server Settings Should You Leave at Their Defaults? Four Safer Choices

By Freedom251 Team · · 8 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most Plex installations, the safest approach is to leave four settings unchanged: Transcoder quality = Automatic, Secure connections = Preferred, advanced hidden settings untouched, and Allow media deletion disabled. Those defaults are not arbitrary. They preserve client compatibility, avoid unnecessary quality or performance trade-offs, and prevent Plex from deleting files from your storage.

There are legitimate reasons to adjust bandwidth, transcoding concurrency, or library scanning behavior. Make those changes only after measuring your connection, understanding the server’s workload, or confirming how your filesystem reports changes. Plex’s own overview says, “The default settings are usually good enough for most installations, so you probably won’t need to make many changes.” See Plex’s settings overview for that general guidance.

The four defaults at a glance

Setting Recommended default Why leave it there Change it only when
Transcoder quality Automatic Plex recommends it for most users and lets the server choose an appropriate transcoding quality. You have measured, repeatable performance or quality requirements that justify a different choice.
Secure connections Preferred It uses secure connections when supported without excluding clients that cannot use them. You have confirmed every client that needs access supports required secure connections.
Advanced hidden settings Leave unchanged Plex says most users never need to alter them; mistakes can have broad side effects. Plex documentation or a specific, understood problem calls for one advanced change.
Allow media deletion Off It prevents Plex apps from deleting the actual media file as well as removing the library entry. You deliberately want authorized Plex users or apps to delete files and have reliable backups.

1. Keep Transcoder quality set to Automatic

Plex’s bandwidth and transcoding guidance explicitly recommends leaving Transcoder quality at the default Automatic value. The option matters when Plex must transcode video rather than deliver the original stream. Transcoding can be required because a client cannot decode the source format, the requested quality is lower than the source, subtitles need to be burned into the picture, or the available connection cannot sustain the original bitrate.

Automatic allows Plex to select a practical quality level for the current playback conditions instead of forcing one permanent compromise. A more aggressive quality setting can reduce bandwidth but may create a softer image and increase processing work. A setting aimed at maximum quality can consume more upload capacity and make a marginal server struggle. If your devices normally Direct Play their files, changing this option will have little visible benefit and can still affect the sessions that do require transcoding.

  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

What to check before changing it

  • Look at the server’s dashboard during an affected stream and determine whether the session is Direct Play, Direct Stream, or transcoding.
  • Check whether the problem is actually caused by upload capacity, client compatibility, subtitle handling, or insufficient CPU/GPU resources.
  • Test the same title on the clients that matter to you rather than judging from one local playback session.

If you do change the value, record the original setting and change one variable at a time. Returning to Automatic is the sensible recovery step when the result is worse or other clients begin buffering.

Transcode concurrency is a separate, workload-dependent decision

The maximum number of simultaneous video transcodes should not be assigned a universal number. Plex says most users will not need to change it. A server dedicated to Plex may tolerate more concurrent sessions than a host also running games, backups, virtual machines, or other CPU-intensive services. Compare the processor’s sustained capacity, the number of simultaneous users, and whether sessions are hardware- or software-transcoded. If other work becomes sluggish, a cap can preserve headroom; if legitimate viewers are being refused unnecessarily, the cap may be too low.

2. Leave Secure connections at Preferred

In Plex’s Network settings documentation, Preferred is the default and Plex “strongly recommend[s] using the default ‘Preferred’ setting.” Preferred tells Plex to use a secure connection when the client and server can establish one, while retaining a compatibility path for clients that do not support secure connections.

Changing the setting to Required makes every connection pass the secure-connection requirement. That can be appropriate in a controlled environment where you have verified all phones, televisions, streaming boxes, desktop apps, and browser sessions that need access. It can also strand an older or otherwise incompatible client. The failure often looks like a server that has disappeared, a sign-in that never completes, or playback that cannot start, even though the server itself is healthy.

How to decide safely

  1. List every device and app that connects to the server, including devices used only occasionally or by other household members.
  2. Update those clients where updates are available and test library browsing and playback from each one.
  3. Only then consider changing Settings > Server > Network > Secure connections to Required.
  4. If any client loses access, return the setting to Preferred before troubleshooting anything else.

Preferred is not a statement that unencrypted connections are always desirable. It is a compatibility-preserving default for a mixed client environment. Required is a deliberate policy choice, not a routine performance tweak.

3. Do not casually edit advanced hidden server settings

Plex exposes additional controls beyond the ordinary server pages. Its hidden-settings guidance says the vast majority of users will never need to alter them and recommends caution. A hidden switch can affect discovery, database behavior, networking, or playback in ways that are not obvious from its label. An apparently minor change can therefore create symptoms somewhere else in the server.

A disciplined approach to an advanced change

  1. Define the exact symptom you are trying to solve and reproduce it on demand.
  2. Read Plex’s documentation for the specific setting and confirm that the setting addresses that symptom.
  3. Change one value, note the old value, and restart only when the documentation says a restart is needed.
  4. Test the original failing scenario and ordinary playback from at least one other client.
  5. Undo the change if it does not produce a measurable improvement.

Do not treat a reset of Plex preferences as a harmless cleanup. Plex warns that resetting preferences may remove granted library access and Downloads items. Before any reset, document which users have access to which libraries and which downloaded items matter. Keep a copy of your configuration and use the narrowest documented fix instead of wiping preferences to see what happens.

When an advanced setting is justified

A documented bug affecting a particular Plex release, an unusual network topology, or a reproducible issue that Plex Support specifically addresses can justify an advanced edit. The justification should come from the problem and the documentation, not from a generic optimization guide. If you cannot explain what the setting changes and how to reverse it, leave it alone.

4. Keep Allow media deletion turned off

The Allow media deletion option has consequences beyond the library view. Plex’s Library settings documentation explains that deleting an item removes it from the library and deletes the corresponding media file. Depending on the operating system, that file may be permanently deleted immediately rather than moved to a recoverable trash location.

For a typical household server, leaving the option off prevents an accidental tap in a television app, phone app, or shared account from becoming a destructive filesystem operation. Removing an item from Plex’s database is reversible in ways that restoring a deleted movie or episode may not be.

If you intentionally want deletion from Plex

  1. Confirm that the account or apps that will perform deletions are trusted.
  2. Verify that your media is backed up and that you know how to restore a deleted file.
  3. Open the server’s library settings and enable Allow media deletion only when you understand the warning.
  4. Test with a disposable sample file before using the feature on your primary library.
  5. Disable the option again when the maintenance task is complete if routine deletion is not part of your workflow.

Remember that library organization and storage management are separate jobs. If you only want to hide or remove an entry from a Plex library, use a non-destructive workflow rather than granting every Plex client permission to delete the underlying file.

Settings that are exceptions rather than “never change” rules

Match remote upload bandwidth to the real connection

Remote playback is limited by the server’s available internet upload capacity. Plex recommends configuring Internet upload speed to match the server connection’s available upload speed. Plex then uses up to 80% of the configured value for streams, leaving room for ordinary network requests and variation in stream bitrates. That 80% figure is a Plex product behavior, not an independent benchmark.

For example, if the measured upload capacity available to the server is 20 Mbps, the 80% behavior corresponds to up to about 16 Mbps for streaming use. The example is arithmetic, not a promise that every stream will receive that rate. Wi-Fi contention, other uploads, ISP congestion, and the source file’s bitrate still matter.

Per-stream limits and user limits should reflect the same evidence: measured upload capacity and the number of people who may stream at once. A high limit does not create bandwidth; it only permits Plex to attempt to use it. Plex notes that some bandwidth and transcoding-limit controls require an active Plex Pass subscription. That requirement applies to those controls, not to leaving the four defaults unchanged.

Choose scanning behavior for the filesystem you actually use

Automatic library scanning reacts when Plex detects a filesystem change. Plex notes that some operating systems do not provide the necessary notification and that content on network-mounted storage typically may not trigger automatic scans reliably. In those environments, a newly added file can exist on disk without appearing in the library until a scan is started.

If automatic scans are consistently missed, use a periodic scan or start a manual scan after copying media. Plex also documents an advanced partial-scan option. Treat these as responses to observed filesystem behavior, not as universal settings that every server should change. Local storage with reliable notifications may work well with automatic detection; a network mount may need a scheduled or manual process.

A practical decision checklist

  • Client compatibility: Before selecting Required secure connections, test every client that needs access.
  • Processing headroom: Before limiting or increasing concurrent transcodes, compare CPU capacity with other work on the host and the number of simultaneous viewers.
  • Measured upload: Before setting remote limits, measure the connection available to the Plex server and account for non-Plex traffic.
  • Filesystem notifications: Before blaming Plex for a missing item, determine whether the storage is local or network-mounted and whether change notifications reach the server.
  • Recovery: Before enabling deletion or editing hidden settings, make a backup and write down the current value and access permissions.

These checks explain why Plex’s defaults are a strong starting point without turning them into a universal rule. Automatic transcoding quality, Preferred secure connections, untouched hidden settings, and disabled media deletion protect the broadest range of installations. Change the exception settings only when your measured hardware, network, clients, or storage behavior gives you a specific reason.
