On a current Google Pixel, charging screen-saver behavior is controlled at Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver. Turn on Use screen saver, choose what to display, then select a trigger under When to show. The current choices are generally While charging and While upright and charging; some phones also offer Restrict to wireless charging.
These controls do not change the lock screen. Lock-screen clocks, notifications, shortcuts and text are configured separately under Wallpaper & style > Lock screen. The exact labels vary with Android and Pixel software versions, so an older phone may show a docked option that is absent from newer menus.

Set up the charging screen saver
Use the following path on supported Pixel software:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & touch, then Screen saver.
- Enable Use screen saver.
- Tap the screen-saver preview or chooser and select the content you want, such as Clock, Home Controls, Photos, Pixel Weather or a supported app.
- Open When to show and choose the charging condition that suits your setup.
- If your phone offers it, enable Restrict to wireless charging to prevent the screen saver from appearing when a cable is connected.
- Use the preview from the same page to check the design and brightness.
The screen saver starts after the display times out while the selected charging condition is present. Pressing the power button to turn the display off is different: that action prevents the screen saver from starting for that timeout event.

What each charging trigger actually does
While charging
While charging allows the screen saver whenever the phone is receiving power and the display reaches its timeout. This is the broadest trigger. It can apply to wired charging and, unless you enable a wireless-only restriction, wireless charging as well. Choose it when you want a clock, photos or controls visible on a nightstand regardless of whether you use a cable or charging pad.
While upright and charging
While upright and charging is intended for a phone held in an upright charging position. It is useful on a stand where the display faces you, but it may not activate when the phone is lying flat or connected only by cable. The wording describes the phone’s physical position as well as its charging state, so results depend on the device and accessory sensors.
Restrict to wireless charging
Some current Pixel builds expose a Restrict to wireless charging switch. With it enabled, the selected screen saver is limited to wireless charging sessions. This is a way to keep a cable-connected phone from lighting up while still using a stand or pad as an ambient display. The option is not guaranteed to appear on every model or software release.

Earlier Google instructions used a separate set of choices: While charging, While docked, or While charging or docked. A phone running an older Android interface may still show those labels. “Docked” in that menu is a software condition associated with a compatible dock or stand; it is not proof that every USB cable, case or third-party charger will be recognized as a dock. Do not combine the old and new labels when following a guide: select the wording that is actually present on your phone.

Choose what appears on the screen
The available tiles depend on the Pixel model, Android version and installed apps. Google lists these common choices:

Charging guidance for Pixel phones also describes clock styles, weather updates, a personal photo frame, charging status and home controls. If a choice is missing, check the phone’s Android version, app installation and permissions before assuming the charger is faulty.
Weather permission
For real-time weather, open the relevant app’s permission settings and allow location Always. A less permissive setting can leave the weather tile unavailable or unable to update while the phone is idle.

A personal photo frame needs access to photos and media. If the screen saver is selected but shows no images, review the Photos or media permission for the app providing the frame, then return to the chooser and select the albums or source it offers.

Low-light mode, timeout and brightness
Screen-saver timing is tied to the display timeout. The timeout determines when the normal screen goes idle; the screen saver then appears if its charging trigger is satisfied. Changing the timeout therefore changes how quickly the screen saver becomes visible, but it does not select the content or charging condition.
In a dark room, Pixel software can switch to a low-light clock or turn the display off. Configure this at Screen saver > Low light mode. Google’s documented default is a transition to a low-light clock. This behavior is separate from the normal screen-saver selection: you can choose Photos or Home Controls for ordinary ambient use and still have the phone dim to a clock at night.
If you need the display to remain off, use low-light behavior or let the timeout operate normally rather than pressing the power button immediately. Pressing the power button turns the display off directly and prevents the screen saver from starting in that cycle.
How docking and charging accessories fit in
Google’s charging instructions specifically mention Pixelsnap Charger and Pixel Stand (1st and 2nd generation). Those references describe documented Pixel charging setups, not a guarantee that every Pixel and every stand exposes identical dock behavior. Compatibility can depend on the phone model, Android release, stand generation, alignment, case thickness and whether the accessory is supplying the expected wireless power.

You do not need to buy a stand to use the screen-saver menu. A cable can satisfy While charging on phones that support that trigger. A stand becomes relevant when you want an upright viewing angle, a wireless-only rule or dock-specific behavior on a compatible model.
If a phone charges but never shows the screen saver on a stand, test the same phone with the broad While charging trigger. Then verify that the stand is delivering power, the phone is positioned correctly and any case is not interrupting wireless charging. If the screen saver appears with a cable but not on the stand, the problem is more likely accessory recognition, alignment or compatibility than the screen-saver content.

The lock screen is the interface shown when the phone is locked. Its controls are not inherited from the charging screen saver. To customize it, open Wallpaper & style > Lock screen.

Google’s lock-screen guide covers the clock’s style, size and color, shortcuts, notifications, lock-screen text and other information such as Wallet. Clock-style instructions in that guide apply to Android 16 and later. A change made there affects the locked phone; a change made under Display & touch > Screen saver affects the ambient display after timeout under charging conditions.

For example, selecting a minimalist screen-saver clock will not remove lock-screen notifications, and changing the lock-screen clock color will not alter the clock shown by a charging screen saver. Configure each surface independently.
Useful configurations by situation

Troubleshoot a screen saver that does not appear
- Confirm the master switch. Return to Settings > Display & touch > Screen saver and make sure Use screen saver is on.
- Check the trigger. If the phone is flat, While upright and charging may not match; test While charging.
- Wait for timeout. The screen saver follows the display timeout. It will not necessarily start the instant a cable or pad is connected.
- Do not use the power button to test. Turning the display off with that button prevents the screen saver from starting for that event. Lock the phone or leave it idle until timeout instead.
- Check the power connection. Confirm the charging icon, reseat the cable or reposition the phone on the wireless pad.
- Review permissions. Weather needs location set to Always allow; personal photos need photo/media access.
- Check low-light behavior. The screen may already have switched to a dim clock or turned itself off.
- Account for version differences. Older software may use While docked; newer software may offer While upright and charging. Follow the labels shown on your device rather than a screenshot from another Android release.
- Verify accessory compatibility. Pixel Stand generations and Pixelsnap Charger support are model- and software-dependent. A charger that supplies power is not automatically a recognized dock.
Which setting should you change?
Change When to show when the problem is when the screen saver starts. Change the content chooser when the problem is what appears. Change Low light mode when the display is too bright at night. Change the display timeout when the screen saver starts too soon or too late. Use Wallpaper & style > Lock screen only for the locked interface, not the charging display.
Because Pixel menus evolve, compare the labels on the phone with Google’s current Pixel Help instructions for your Android release. The underlying separation remains useful: charging screen-saver settings govern the post-timeout ambient display, while lock-screen settings govern the locked phone.
