For a TCL QM7L, the highest-impact changes are choosing a restrained picture mode, then tuning brightness, local contrast, color temperature and motion separately for each input, signal type and room. Start films in FILMMAKER MODE or Movie, use the actual SDR or HDR program while adjusting, and judge every change on familiar scenes. There is no single numeric preset that is accurate for every QM7L, room or source.
TCL’s own documentation warns that available controls vary by content, input, picture mode and model. The QM7L manual makes the same point: “The options available may vary depending on the picture mode you set.” Check the labels on your television rather than assuming every menu item will appear. See the QM7L support and downloads page for the model’s manual and quick-start guide.

Open the picture controls and set up a repeatable test
On Google TV, picture controls are found under Display & Sound. TCL’s Google TV settings guide says the available options can change with the content, input, picture mode and TV model. Open the controls while the source you want to improve is playing, because a setting changed for one HDMI input or app may not represent what another source is using.
Use a short, familiar test sequence instead of judging a setting from a single spectacular shot:

Change one control at a time, watch the same passage again, and keep the setting only if the improvement remains visible in several scenes. If a control is missing, first check the active picture mode and whether the source is actually SDR or HDR.
Best starting point for films
Choose FILMMAKER MODE or Movie
The QM7L manual lists FILMMAKER MODE and Movie among its picture modes. Either is a sensible starting point for films because they are intended to present a less aggressively enhanced image than a vivid-style mode. TCL describes picture mode as the overall appearance preset, with different modes serving different viewing conditions. Start with FILMMAKER MODE; if you prefer the Movie mode’s balance of brightness and processing, use that instead.
This is a starting point, not a guarantee of reference accuracy. Panel variation, the selected input, the streaming service’s signal and your room all affect what you see. Do not copy a mode from an SDR film to HDR and assume the result is equivalent.

Extra processing is not automatically wrong. A viewer who dislikes artificial smoothing can reduce motion processing, while someone watching low-quality broadcast material may prefer some enhancement. Make the decision with real content: if a processing option creates halos, edge shimmer or an obviously “video-like” look, reduce it; if turning it off reveals distracting blur or judder, restore the lowest level that solves the problem.
Adjust brightness for both the signal and the room
Brightness and Peak Luminance
TCL defines Brightness as overall screen brightness and Peak Luminance as the maximum brightness available in local-dimming areas. Treat both as viewing-condition controls rather than universal calibration numbers. In a dim room, excessive output can make blacks look lifted and highlights uncomfortable. In daylight, a higher output can preserve visibility.

RTINGS found the QM7L bright enough to overcome glare in most well-lit rooms, although reflections can still distract during dark scenes. Raise brightness only until shadow detail and ordinary mid-tones are comfortable to see; do not keep increasing it simply because the panel can become brighter. If a dark scene looks gray after raising the control, compare it with the room lights reduced before changing more settings.
HDR Dynamic Tone Mapping
Dynamic Tone Mapping balances HDR brightness and detail by remapping the signal to the television’s capabilities. Compare its available choices with actual HDR material, including a scene that contains a bright highlight beside a darker area. A brighter-looking option may make highlights more obvious but can also alter the intended balance or hide subtle gradations. Choose the option that retains highlight texture and shadow information for your taste, rather than assuming the brightest image is the most accurate.

Make this decision while HDR is active. A tone-mapping choice that looks useful in HDR does not establish an SDR preference, and the menu may expose different options in each mode.
Use Local Contrast to shape dark scenes
Local Contrast changes backlight intensity by area while also affecting perceived signal contrast. Increasing it can deepen blacks and give a dark film more dimensionality; reducing it can make transitions less aggressive and preserve detail in difficult scenes.
Set it while watching a dark sequence with a bright object, white subtitle or star field against black. Look for three things at once:

- Black areas should look dark without swallowing texture in hair, clothing or a dim room.
- Bright objects should retain their shape instead of blooming into a large glow.
- Subtitles should remain legible without a conspicuous halo around each letter.
RTINGS’ QM7L review reports deep blacks and only minor haloing around highlights. That does not make one Local Contrast level mandatory; it means the control’s tradeoff is worth checking on your own unit and viewing distance. If halos become distracting, lower Local Contrast one step and repeat the same scene. If blacks look washed out and no detail is being lost, a higher setting may suit your room.

Color Temperature first
The QM7L exposes Color Temperature, which TCL describes as the warmer-or-cooler color tone. RTINGS observed excess blue in brighter grays and a too-cool HDR image out of the box. If whites, neutral walls or gray clothing look bluish, try a warmer Color Temperature and then recheck skin tones and white objects in both bright and dark scenes.
Color Saturation and Tint
Use Color Saturation to control color intensity and Tint to adjust the balance between green and magenta. Keep saturation natural: bright red costumes, grass and neon signs are useful checks, but an image that looks more colorful is not necessarily more faithful. Tint should be changed only when neutral objects or skin consistently lean green or magenta across several scenes; a single stylized shot is not enough evidence.
Leave White Balance for measured work
The menu also includes White Balance controls. They affect the television’s neutral grayscale and color tracking, but a universal manual adjustment cannot account for every panel, input and brightness level. Leave advanced white-balance changes to measured calibration or qualified guidance rather than copying numbers from another display. The available sources do not establish a complete numeric calibration table for the standard QM7L.
Fine-tune Contrast, Black Level and Gamma only after the basics
TCL’s guide defines Contrast as the white level, Black Level as the appearance of black, and Gamma as mid-range brightness. These controls interact, so adjust them after choosing a mode, setting room-appropriate brightness and deciding on Local Contrast.

- Contrast: Check white shirts, clouds and bright window detail. If these areas merge into a flat white patch, reduce Contrast; if the whole image looks dull and highlight detail remains intact, a modest increase may help.
- Black Level: Use a dark scene containing visible near-black texture. If shadow detail disappears, the black level is too aggressive for that signal or source; if blacks look gray, check the source’s range and your room before making a large change.
- Gamma: Gamma changes the middle of the brightness range rather than peak highlights. A darker room may benefit from a less lifted mid-range, while a bright room may need more visible mid-tone detail. Judge faces, gray clothing and interior walls, not a single black test screen.
These controls can be unavailable or renamed in some modes. Follow the on-screen labels and keep SDR and HDR decisions separate.
Motion: choose natural movement or smoothing by content
Motion Clarity
TCL describes Motion Clarity as adding motion compensation to reduce blur and judder. Interpolation can make camera pans and sports look smoother, but it can also create an artificial “video” appearance or edge artifacts. Compare the same pan with Motion Clarity on and off, then use the lowest setting that solves the problem you actually notice.
RTINGS found the QM7L generally good for sports but observed edge artifacts during fast transitions. If a player, puck or ball develops a visible outline during rapid movement, reduce the processing and check again. Sports mode is described by TCL as suitable for fast-moving sports, but it remains a preference mode rather than a guarantee that every broadcast will look cleaner.
Gaming has a different tradeoff
Judge games separately from films and sports. The QM7L’s dedicated gaming mode has its own motion-blur limitation in RTINGS’ testing, so turning on more motion processing is not a universal fix. Prioritize responsive controls, then test a game with a fast camera turn and small text. If motion processing adds artifacts or latency, leave it off; if the game’s native motion blur is distracting and the mode offers an acceptable option, compare that setting with the unprocessed image.
Recommended starting decisions by situation
| Situation | Start with | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Films in a dim room | FILMMAKER MODE or Movie; moderate Brightness and Local Contrast | Shadow texture, subtitle halos and highlight detail |
| Bright daytime SDR | Movie or your preferred mode; adjust Brightness and Peak Luminance for comfort | Readable mid-tones, reflections and clipped white detail |
| HDR films and shows | Your preferred restrained mode; compare Dynamic Tone Mapping choices | Bright highlights beside dark areas, plus retained HDR detail |
| Fast sports | Sports mode or Movie with a carefully chosen Motion Clarity level | Ball/player edges during rapid transitions and camera pans |
| Console or PC gaming | Gaming mode, then test motion options independently | Control response, moving text and camera-turn artifacts |
These are starting decisions, not fixed presets. Recheck them for every input that has its own picture memory and for each signal type your source sends.

Common problems and the fastest fix
“HDR looks too blue.”
Confirm that HDR is actually playing, then try a warmer Color Temperature. Recheck neutral grays and skin tones before touching saturation. If only one app looks blue, compare another HDR source before changing the television globally.
“Dark scenes are gray.”
Reduce room light and review Brightness, Peak Luminance and Local Contrast together. Excessive room reflections can make a correct black look gray. Lower Local Contrast only if the change also improves halos or crushed detail; otherwise inspect the source and mode.
“Subtitles glow.”
Use a dark scene with white subtitles and reduce Local Contrast incrementally. Also test a different picture mode, because the available processing and control ranges can change with mode.

“Motion looks like a soap opera.”
Reduce or disable Motion Clarity and compare a familiar film pan. For sports, test the setting on a fast transition rather than on a static wide shot. For games, use the dedicated gaming mode and judge response and blur separately.
“The menu does not show a setting.”
Check the current source, SDR/HDR state and picture mode. TCL explicitly says options vary with content, input, picture mode and model. The QM7L manual’s note about mode-dependent options applies here as well; use the control labels shown on your set instead of forcing a missing adjustment.
Do not copy QM7L Pro numbers onto the standard QM7L
RTINGS publishes a detailed numerical settings page for the QM7L Pro. That page describes starting points for the Pro television tested under its conditions. It is not a validated standard-QM7L preset. The independent QM7L review supports qualitative observations such as deep blacks, brightness suitable for many bright rooms, a cool HDR appearance and motion artifacts, but the reviewed sources do not establish one complete numeric table for standard QM7L SDR, HDR, gaming and room conditions.
For the standard QM7L, the reliable method is to begin with FILMMAKER MODE or Movie, adjust the few controls that solve a visible problem, and save separate choices for each source and signal where the television allows it. A measured calibration can go further, but copying another model’s values cannot substitute for measurements on your panel.
Quick Recap
A compact change order
- Play the exact SDR, HDR, sports or game content you want to improve.
- Choose FILMMAKER MODE or Movie for films; use Sports or Gaming only when that content benefits from its behavior.
- Set Brightness and Peak Luminance for the room, checking glare, shadow detail and white detail.
- Compare HDR Dynamic Tone Mapping only during HDR playback.
- Adjust Local Contrast with dark scenes, subtitles and bright objects visible together.
- If neutrals look blue, try a warmer Color Temperature before changing Saturation or Tint.
- Test Motion Clarity on familiar pans, sports transitions and game camera turns; keep the lowest artifact-free choice.
- Make small Contrast, Black Level or Gamma changes only if a specific highlight, shadow or mid-tone problem remains.
- Repeat the process for each input and for SDR versus HDR, because the available controls and saved behavior can differ.
