Change Roku TV picture settings in this order: select the correct input and content, choose a picture mode, then make small adjustments to the basic controls only when a specific problem remains. Do not copy one set of slider numbers across every Roku TV; available controls and accurate values vary by model, panel, signal, room lighting, and whether the content is SDR, HDR10, or Dolby Vision.
Open the picture menu for the content you are actually watching
Roku’s picture menu is context-sensitive. Start playing the show, movie, or game you want to adjust, or switch to the exact Live TV, HDMI, or AV input. Press the Star/Options button on the Roku remote and choose Picture Settings. Menu names and the available controls can differ by television model.

Roku TVs store picture settings separately for each video input. Streaming video and a cable box connected through HDMI can therefore look different even when the same television is used. Adjust each input independently when necessary. The menu also provides options to reset the selected picture mode or apply settings to all inputs; use the latter only when you deliberately want one setup copied everywhere.

Picture modes are broad presets. They change several characteristics at once and are a better starting point than immediately moving brightness, contrast, color, and sharpness controls.

| Content or situation | Useful starting point | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| SDR in a dim or normally lit room | A balanced or cinema-oriented mode | Less emphasis on maximum brightness and a generally restrained presentation. |
| SDR in a bright room | A brighter mode, if the balanced preset looks too dull | More visible highlights, but potentially a less natural image in a dark room. |
| HDR10 | Dark, Normal, or Bright according to room and preference | Roku describes Dark as balanced and closest to a cinema experience, Normal as brighter with a slight color boost, and Bright as vivid and much brighter. |
| Dolby Vision | The Dolby Vision mode that matches your room and preference | These modes appear only when compatible Dolby Vision content is detected. |
| Console gaming | Game Mode or THX Game Mode where supported | Prioritizes response time and gaming features over ordinary movie-processing preferences. |
HDR10 and Dolby Vision modes are conditional. They appear when the TV detects compatible HDR content and the television returns to the previous mode after HDR playback ends. A mode that looks excellent for an HDR movie is not necessarily the right choice for ordinary broadcast or streaming video.
Use the basic controls to correct a visible problem
Roku does not publish one universal numeric recipe for these sliders. Make a small change, compare a familiar scene, and stop when the original problem is solved. Not every Roku TV exposes every control.
| Control | What it changes | Use it when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backlight | The screen’s peak backlight level | The entire picture is too dim or too bright for the room. | Excessive settings can be tiring in a dark room and increase power use. |
| Brightness | How dark black areas appear | Shadow areas look crushed or the whole image appears washed out. | Too low hides near-black detail; too high makes blacks gray. |
| Contrast | The intensity of white parts of the image | White areas look weak, or bright detail appears clipped. | Too much can erase detail in clouds, snow, and white clothing. |
| Sharpness | How strongly edges are emphasized | Text or fine edges look unusually soft. | Too much creates halos, ringing, and artificial outlines. |
| Color | Color intensity | The image looks noticeably dull or oversaturated. | Overdoing it produces cartoonish colors and unnatural faces. |
| Tint | The red-to-green balance | Skin tones or neutral objects have a persistent green or magenta cast. | Small changes are enough; most viewers should leave this near its default. |
Use backlight, not brightness, when the room is simply too bright or too dark. Brightness is intended to affect the appearance of dark image information, whereas backlight changes the panel’s overall light output. If one control makes a different part of the picture worse, undo it and try the control that matches the symptom more closely.

What to do with Expert Picture Settings
Expert Picture Settings are optional calibration controls for users who understand measurement and color terminology. Roku documents gamma, noise reduction, color temperature, color space, local dimming, action smoothing, and LED action clarity, although a particular TV may show only some of them.
On the television itself, direct access requires a 4K Roku TV running Roku OS 12.5 or later. Roku’s mobile app can expose Expert Picture Settings on a lower OS version. Either way, an active stream or physical input must be selected before the controls become available.
Color temperature and white balance
Color temperature changes the overall warmth or coolness of white and gray tones. Custom white-balance controls are more demanding: Roku’s support documentation states, “A colorimeter is recommended when making custom temperature adjustments.” A colorimeter is not required for ordinary picture-mode or basic-slider changes, but it is appropriate when you are deliberately calibrating a display.

Roku says custom 11-point white-balance values are global rather than input-specific. That means a change made while correcting one source can affect other inputs as well. Leave white balance and color-management controls at their defaults unless you have a measured target and a reason to change them.
Recommended Free Tools
Gamma, color space, and noise reduction
Gamma affects how the TV distributes brightness through the midtones. Color space controls how the set interprets the range of colors in the signal. Noise reduction can make heavily compressed or noisy video look cleaner, but it can also remove fine texture. These settings are best treated as problem-solving tools, not automatic upgrades. Change one at a time and check the same scene before and after.
Use local dimming only when your model supports it
Local dimming divides the screen’s backlight into zones and adjusts those zones to improve contrast. Roku lists Off, Low, Medium, and High levels, but the control is not present on every Roku TV. Roku identifies Plus and Pro Series televisions as supporting local dimming; if the option is absent from your menu, the set does not support it.

Start with Low or Medium if available and compare dark scenes containing bright subtitles, stars, or streetlights. Higher settings can deepen blacks but may make zone transitions or bright objects more noticeable. When local dimming is active, Dynamic Contrast is automatically disabled if that separate setting exists on the television.

Adjust motion processing only if motion is the problem
Motion-control names vary among third-party Roku TV models. One set may show Action Smoothing, another Action Clarity or LED Motion Clarity, and some may show none of these options.
Motion processing can make camera pans and sports look smoother, but Roku’s troubleshooting guidance warns that high settings can create odd motion or ghosting. If movement looks artificial, faces distort during pans, or objects leave trails, reduce the setting or turn it Off. Do not enable every motion feature by default; choose it only when the benefit is visible in the content you watch.
OLED owners need a separate burn-in precaution
Roku OLED TVs ship in Low Power picture mode by default to help reduce the risk of burn-in. This advice applies to Roku OLED models, not LCD Roku TVs.
During a long session with a fixed news logo, scoreboard, game interface, or other overlay, Roku advises lowering brightness. The practical goal is to reduce the intensity of static elements rather than leaving a bright, unchanging image on the panel for hours. Varying content and allowing the screen to display moving images also reduces the time any one element remains fixed.
A practical adjustment sequence
Use this order whenever a Roku TV image looks wrong:
- Select the exact input or start the exact stream you want to improve.
- Open Star/Options > Picture Settings.
- Identify whether the signal is ordinary SDR, HDR10, Dolby Vision, or a console input.
- Choose the closest picture mode for the room and content.
- Set backlight for comfortable overall light output.
- Correct dark detail with brightness only if blacks are crushed or gray.
- Adjust contrast only when white detail is weak or clipping.
- Use sharpness, color, and tint sparingly to address the specific visible defect.
- Try local dimming, motion processing, or gaming options only when the menu and model support them.
- Watch several familiar scenes, including dark, bright, and skin-tone-heavy scenes, before keeping the change.
If an adjustment makes the picture worse, use the mode reset option rather than chasing several compensating sliders. Resetting the selected picture mode affects that mode; applying settings to all inputs is a broader action and should be intentional.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
- Everything is too dark: check the selected mode and raise backlight before changing brightness.
- Black areas lose detail: make a small brightness adjustment and recheck a shadow scene.
- White objects look flat or blown out: reduce contrast slightly and inspect bright detail.
- Faces look orange or cartoonish: reduce color; do not compensate with sharpness.
- Edges have glowing outlines: lower sharpness.
- Motion looks unnatural: lower Action Smoothing or related motion controls, or turn them Off.
- Games feel sluggish: verify Game Mode and ALLM on the console’s HDMI input.
- Bright objects in dark scenes cause halos: test a lower local-dimming level if the TV provides that feature.
- A control is missing: treat that as a model limitation, not a hidden setting you must unlock.
