Start with the TV’s picture mode, not a copied calibration chart. Choose Filmmaker Mode or Cinema for movies, Game mode when input delay matters, then adjust the OLED light or pixel-brightness control for your room. If the image is unexpectedly dim or keeps changing, check energy-saving and ambient-light features before touching contrast, black level or white balance. Recheck the setup whenever you change inputs or start SDR, HDR or Dolby Vision content because many televisions store separate settings or switch controls automatically.
1. Pick a picture mode that matches what you are watching
Picture modes are groups of presets that alter brightness, colour, processing and motion. They are the safest first change because they are designed for a particular type of content. There is no single best mode for every room, source and viewer: an accurate movie preset may look too subdued in a sunlit room, while a vivid preset can exaggerate colour and edge enhancement.

| What you are doing | Best first mode to try | Why | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Watching films or prestige television | Filmmaker Mode, Cinema or the brand’s accurate movie preset | These modes aim to preserve the creator’s intended colour, contrast and motion presentation. | Labels, availability and adjustable controls vary by model, software and region. |
| Playing on a console or PC | Game mode | It disables or reduces processing that adds controller-to-screen delay. Sony describes Game as optimising games and minimising image delay. | Some image-processing and calibration controls may be limited. |
| General television in a bright room | Standard, Cinema or an accurate preset, then raise luminance for comfort | Room-specific luminance is more useful than a permanently “bright” mode. | Automatic brightness and power-saving features can still change the result. |
LG says the appropriate mode depends on viewing environment, preference and video type, and its televisions can be set to start Filmmaker Mode automatically. Sony’s guide describes Professional as preserving original quality and Cinema as suitable for movies at home. On the LG B3 tested by RTINGS, Filmmaker Mode was an accurate movie alternative, although it restricted access to many adjustments. Those descriptions are guidance, not a promise that every OLED uses the same names or behaviour.
To choose, open the TV’s picture menu while the content you actually watch is playing. Select Filmmaker Mode or Cinema for films, and Game for a console input when latency is more important than maximum processing. Leave vivid or dynamic modes for cases where you knowingly prefer a brighter, more saturated image; they are not a neutral reference.

2. Fix unexpected dimness before changing calibration controls
A new OLED can look dim because of a setting rather than a panel fault. First check features called Energy Saving, Power Saving, Eco, Auto Brightness or Ambient Light Sensor. These can intentionally reduce output, or vary it as the room changes.
LG energy-saving controls
LG states that active Energy Saving can change screen brightness. On listed 2022 models using webOS 22 and 2021 models using webOS 6.0 or later, its documented route is Settings → All Settings → General → OLED Care → Device Self Care → Energy Saving Steps → Off. LG provides a different route for webOS 5.0, so do not assume that path applies to a newer or older set. The support article is dated July 17, 2026: menu names can change with software updates.
Turning energy saving off gives a more consistent picture, but it is not mandatory. If you prefer lower power use or a screen that adapts to the room, leave the feature enabled and judge the result under your normal lighting. LG also warns that picture settings may differ by input, so repeat the check on each source that looks wrong. See LG’s energy-saving instructions for model-specific options.
Sony ambient-light behaviour
Sony documents a light sensor that adjusts brightness according to ambient light; the television may darken in a dark environment. If luminance changes when clouds pass, lamps turn on or you move between rooms, inspect the ambient-light or automatic-brightness setting. Disable it only if you want a fixed output. Sony repeatedly notes that the setting and its location depend on model and region; its general guidance is at Sony’s picture-settings support page.

3. Set OLED light or pixel brightness for your room
After selecting a mode and checking automatic controls, adjust the control that governs the panel’s light output. Depending on the brand, it may be called OLED Pixel Brightness, OLED Light, Panel Brightness or simply Brightness in a mode-specific menu. Use the exact label on your television. This control is not the same as black level, which sets how dark video blacks are interpreted, or contrast, which affects the white end of the signal.
Use familiar material rather than a test clip. In daylight or a room with strong artificial light, raise panel luminance until ordinary scenes are comfortable without forcing you to squint. In a dark room, a lower setting may reduce eye strain and make shadow detail easier to watch. LG publishes separate example values for natural light, artificial light and a dark room, but those values belong to its guidance and are not universal prescriptions. RTINGS likewise says OLED Pixel Brightness on its LG B3 guide is a starting point that should be changed for environment and preference.
- Change one control at a time and watch several scenes, including a bright outdoor shot and a dark interior.
- Keep black-level and contrast controls at their defaults unless you have a specific clipping or level problem; changing them to compensate for a dim room can crush shadow detail or clip highlights.
- Do not copy another owner’s brightness number. Panel generation, picture mode, firmware, screen size and individual-unit variation all affect the result.
LG’s broader recommendations are collected in its picture-settings guide. The examples are useful for understanding the controls, not for making every OLED identical.
4. Recheck settings for each input and video format
Do not finish setup with one menu change and assume it covers the television. Picture profiles are often saved separately for HDMI ports, internal apps and antenna or cable input. A set can also switch into an HDR or Dolby Vision picture state as soon as compatible content starts.

- Open the information or picture menu and note the active mode and signal format.
- Start HDR content, then inspect the mode and luminance controls again. Some controls may be renamed, locked or automatically changed.
- Start Dolby Vision content if your television supports it and repeat the check.
- Switch to each HDMI port used by a console, disc player or streaming box. Confirm that Game mode is active where low delay matters and that the source’s HDR output is configured as intended.
RTINGS’ LG B3 guide reports that HDR and Dolby Vision playback changed some controls automatically on its tested unit and left HDR values at their defaults. That is evidence for the specific B3 configuration, not a universal recipe. LG also warns that picture mode and quality can differ by input. If one source looks too dark, oversaturated or delayed, identify its format and input before altering global calibration.
5. Decide whether motion processing helps or distracts
Motion settings are optional. Interpolation can make sports and live video look smoother, but it can also create the “soap opera” appearance that many film viewers dislike, along with occasional halos or artefacts. Sony calls its controls Motionflow and provides a Film Mode or CineMotion option for film cadence; names and availability depend on model and region.
For films and scripted shows
Begin with the movie preset’s default motion behaviour. If movement looks unnaturally smooth, inspect Motionflow, TruMotion or the equivalent and reduce interpolation or turn it off. If you see judder on film-based material, try the television’s film-mode control rather than increasing general smoothness. Evaluate several scenes: a setting that helps a slow camera pan may look poor during fast action.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For sports and live video
You may prefer some smoothing for a panning camera or scrolling scoreboard. Increase it gradually and watch for double edges around players and balls. There is no single value that suits every programme, refresh rate or viewer, so record the setting that works for your sports input instead of applying it to films.

6. Leave instrument-dependent calibration alone at first
White balance, colour-management-system (CMS) adjustments and detailed gamma controls can improve an individual television when measured with suitable equipment. They are poor first steps for a new owner using only visual judgement. RTINGS explicitly warns that its calibrated white-balance numbers should not be copied because manufacturing tolerances create unit-to-unit variation, even among the same model.
A sensible basic setup therefore leaves white balance, CMS and advanced gamma at their defaults. If you later hire a calibrator or use a meter and software, calibrate the actual panel in the room where it is watched, and save separate day/night or SDR/HDR profiles if the television supports them. Do not treat a settings list for a reviewed model as a guaranteed match for your serial number, panel size or firmware.
7. Do not run panel-care routines as routine setup
OLED televisions include automatic protection and panel-care processes. A new set does not normally require a manually triggered pixel-cleaning cycle before you watch it. Tom’s Guide advises against running pixel cleaning too often; repeated manual cycles are not a substitute for diagnosing a real defect and can add unnecessary wear.

If you see temporary image retention or another visible problem, follow the manufacturer’s manual for that exact model and use a pixel-refresh procedure only when the instructions call for it. Persistent retention, lines, dead pixels or abnormal brightness should be documented and handled through the manufacturer or retailer rather than by repeatedly launching maintenance cycles.

8. A practical first-day setup sequence
Use this order so each decision has a clear purpose and you do not chase one setting with another:
- Install the television, update its software and let it reach normal operating temperature.
- With a film playing, select Filmmaker Mode, Cinema or the closest accurate movie preset. With a console game running, select Game mode on that input if latency is important.
- Set the TV to the room’s usual lighting. Inspect Energy Saving, Power Saving, Eco and ambient-light controls if brightness is lower than expected or changes by itself.
- Adjust OLED Pixel Brightness, OLED Light or the equivalent panel-luminance control for comfortable viewing. Do not substitute black level or contrast.
- Play both bright and dark familiar scenes. Look for crushed shadows, clipped highlights, excessive colour and distracting motion artefacts.
- Start SDR, HDR and Dolby Vision material where available. Recheck mode and luminance for each format and input.
- Adjust motion only if you can describe the problem you are solving: too much interpolation, film judder or insufficient sports smoothness.
- Leave white balance, CMS, advanced gamma and manual pixel cleaning untouched unless model-specific instructions or measured calibration justify them.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Checks in order | What not to do first |
|---|---|---|
| Screen is dim all the time | Confirm the picture mode, then inspect Energy Saving, Eco and OLED Pixel Brightness for the active input and format. | Do not raise contrast or copy a white-balance chart. |
| Brightness changes during the day | Check the ambient-light sensor and automatic brightness features; compare the same scene with those options disabled. | Do not assume the panel is defective before checking sensors. |
| One HDMI device looks different | Verify that input’s saved mode, HDR output and cable/device video settings. | Do not change the TV’s global settings based on one source. |
| Movies look like live video | Inspect Motionflow, TruMotion or Film Mode/CineMotion and reduce interpolation. | Do not increase smoothness indiscriminately. |
| Colours or grayscale look wrong | Return advanced controls to defaults and verify the correct SDR/HDR/Dolby Vision mode. | Do not apply another unit’s CMS or white-balance values. |
| Temporary image retention appears | Follow the model’s panel-care instructions and allow normal automatic routines to run. | Do not repeatedly launch manual pixel cleaning. |
What “accurate” means—and when to choose something else
An accurate preset aims to reproduce the signal close to the mastering intent: neutral grayscale, appropriate colour and the intended contrast and motion treatment. It does not guarantee that the image will look brightest or most vivid in your room. Viewers may reasonably prefer a cooler white point, stronger saturation or more motion smoothing. The useful comparison is whether a change solves a stated problem without damaging other content.
Model, software version, panel characteristics and region determine which controls exist. LG, Sony and other manufacturers use different labels and menu structures, and an internal streaming app may store a different profile from an HDMI port. Treat every number and menu path as model-specific, keep notes of changes, and make one adjustment at a time. The fastest reliable setup is therefore a content-appropriate mode, stable automatic-brightness behaviour, room-matched panel luminance and a deliberate check of every signal format—not a long list of copied calibration values.
