That is the minimum compatibility floor, not the version you should normally choose. WordPress.org lists PHP 8.3 or later as its public recommendation, while the WordPress Hosting Handbook recommends PHP 8.4 or later for production. If your host, theme and plugins support it, PHP 8.4 is the sensible default for a new or upgraded site in 2026; PHP 8.5 is also fully supported by WordPress 6.9 and later.

The short answer: minimum versus recommended PHP
“Required” and “recommended” answer different questions. The required version is the lowest PHP release that WordPress supports. The recommended version is the release WordPress wants you to run for a safer, better-maintained production site.

| What is the minimum supported PHP? | PHP 7.4 | WordPress 7.0 dropped PHP 7.2 and 7.3. WordPress 7.0 and later support PHP 7.4 as the floor. |
| What does WordPress.org recommend? | PHP 8.3 or greater | This is the public minimum recommendation, not the technical compatibility minimum. |
| What is recommended for production? | PHP 8.4 or later | The Hosting Handbook’s production guidance favors an actively supported PHP branch. |
| Can I use PHP 8.5? | Yes, where the host and site code support it | PHP 8.5 is fully supported by WordPress 6.9 and later, including the 2026 release line. |
WordPress Core contributor John Blackbourn summarized the policy in May 2026: “The minimum recommended PHP version remains at 8.3. The minimum supported PHP version is 7.4 since WordPress 7.0.” That single sentence explains why a site can run on PHP 7.4 while still being advised to move to a newer branch.
Why WordPress has a lower support floor than its recommendation
WordPress supports a broad range of hosting environments. Keeping PHP 7.4 as the floor lets older sites, extensions and hosting accounts continue to update WordPress while their owners plan a controlled PHP upgrade. It does not mean PHP 7.4 is a good long-term target.

PHP’s own maintenance policy is separate from WordPress compatibility. PHP 7.4 and other old branches are upstream end-of-life. They may execute WordPress successfully, but the PHP project no longer provides normal security maintenance for them. Compatibility therefore answers “will WordPress run?”; it does not answer “is this a secure production configuration?”
The gap also gives hosts and developers time to test themes and plugins. A WordPress release can support a PHP version before every third-party extension has been tested on it. Conversely, a plugin may still work on an older PHP branch while that branch is no longer receiving security fixes.
WordPress and PHP compatibility in the 2026 release line
WordPress 7.0
WordPress 7.0 changed the floor by dropping PHP 7.2 and 7.3. PHP 7.4 became the minimum supported version. A server running PHP 7.3 or below is therefore below the requirement for WordPress 7.0 and later; upgrade PHP before upgrading WordPress.
WordPress 7.1
The Hosting Handbook lists WordPress 7.1 as fully compatible with PHP 7.4, 8.0, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4 and 8.5. “Fully compatible” describes WordPress core. Your particular plugin set, theme, mu-plugin, hosting extension or custom code can impose a stricter limit.

WordPress 6.9 and PHP 8.5
PHP 8.5 is fully supported by WordPress 6.9 and later. That makes it a valid option for the 2026 WordPress line, but production readiness still depends on your host and on every component that executes PHP. Check vendor compatibility statements and staging results instead of assuming that core compatibility guarantees a seamless site-wide upgrade.
PHP branch status: what the numbers mean in practice
For a meaningful choice, consider both WordPress compatibility and PHP’s upstream support status. The following status applies to the branches identified in the 2026 Hosting Handbook guidance.
| PHP branch | WordPress 7.1 compatibility | Upstream status described by the Handbook | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7.4 | Fully compatible | End-of-life | Use only as a temporary compatibility floor while you update site code or move hosts. |
| 8.0 | Fully compatible | Older branch; current support status is not stated in the cited guidance | Do not select it for a new deployment when a maintained branch is available. |
| 8.1 | Fully compatible | Older branch; current support status is not stated in the cited guidance | Suitable only when a documented application constraint prevents a newer branch. |
| 8.2 | Fully compatible | Security-support branch; reaches end of life on 31 December 2026 | A short-term option, but plan a move before that date. |
| 8.3 | Fully compatible | Security-only support since 31 December 2025 | Meets WordPress.org’s recommendation, but it is not the strongest production target for a new site. |
| 8.4 | Fully compatible | Active-support branch | The Hosting Handbook’s recommended production baseline when your code supports it. |
| 8.5 | Fully compatible | Active-support branch | A current choice for WordPress 6.9 and later after plugin, theme and host testing. |
The dates are important. PHP 8.3 moved to security-only support on 31 December 2025, and PHP 8.2 is scheduled to reach end of life on 31 December 2026. A branch can satisfy WordPress’s recommendation while having a shorter remaining maintenance runway than a newer active-support branch.
Which PHP version should you choose?
For a new WordPress site
Choose PHP 8.4 or later, provided the host offers it and your theme and plugins explicitly support it. PHP 8.4 is the conservative production default because it is an active-support branch and is the Hosting Handbook’s stated production recommendation. PHP 8.5 is also reasonable for a freshly tested stack, especially when the host makes switching and rollback straightforward.

For an existing site on PHP 8.2 or 8.3
Do not change PHP blindly. First update WordPress, plugins and themes, then test PHP 8.4 (or 8.5) on a clone or staging site. PHP 8.3 still meets the public recommendation, but it is already in security-only support; PHP 8.2 has a stated end-of-life date of 31 December 2026. Treat either as a migration checkpoint rather than a reason to postpone planning.
For an existing site on PHP 7.4
PHP 7.4 is enough to satisfy WordPress 7.0 and 7.1’s compatibility requirement, but it is not a secure target because the PHP branch is end-of-life. Keep it only while you resolve extension incompatibilities, replace abandoned code or arrange a host migration. Set a deadline, maintain tested backups and move to PHP 8.4 or 8.5 as soon as the site passes compatibility testing.

Do not lower the PHP version permanently just to preserve one unmaintained extension. Identify the failing component, check whether its vendor has a compatible release, replace it, or isolate the old site while you rebuild. A rollback can restore service during diagnosis, but it should be a recovery step, not the final security plan.

- Record the current environment. Note the current PHP version, WordPress version, active theme, plugins, mu-plugins, server software and any PHP extensions the site requires. Save this information before making changes.
- Update WordPress core and extensions. Apply available WordPress, plugin and theme updates while the site is still on its known-working PHP branch. Remove inactive extensions that you no longer need; they can still contain incompatible code if loaded by a custom configuration.
- Create and verify a backup. Back up both the database and all files, including uploads and configuration. A backup is useful only if you know where it is stored and have tested restoring it on a staging site or separate account.
- Clone the site to staging. Use the same PHP extensions, database version and web-server configuration as production. A PHP-version test on a different stack can miss failures caused by missing extensions or changed server settings.
- Switch staging to PHP 8.4. In the host panel, open the site or domain’s PHP settings, select PHP 8.4, save the change and wait for the service reload. If your host offers PHP 8.5 and your extensions support it, repeat the test on 8.5 rather than assuming the result will be identical.
- Exercise real workloads. Log in as an administrator, browse key templates, search, submit forms, publish a test post, upload media, run scheduled tasks and test checkout or membership flows where applicable. Review PHP and web-server error logs for warnings, deprecations and fatal errors.
- Fix incompatibilities before production. Update or replace the extension named in the error, or ask its maintainer for a PHP-8-compatible release. Do not suppress a fatal error by deleting random files or disabling security controls.
- Schedule the production change. Announce a maintenance window, put high-write sites into maintenance mode if necessary, take a fresh backup and switch the production PHP version using the host’s documented control.
- Confirm the live result. Check the homepage, administrator, forms, media, cron jobs, integrations and logs. Record the final PHP version and the date so future troubleshooting has a clear baseline.
Host controls, rollback and operational checks
Most managed and shared hosts expose a PHP selector in a hosting dashboard; some apply the version per domain, subdomain or directory. A command-line change made for one virtual host may not affect another. Check the version from the WordPress Site Health screen and, if permitted, with a temporary diagnostic page that is removed immediately after use.
Before switching, confirm that your host supports a reversible change. A good rollback plan is: restore the prior PHP branch, clear application and opcode caches, reproduce the failing request, capture the log entry, and then correct the offending plugin or theme. If the old branch is end-of-life, keep the rollback window short and continue the upgrade work rather than leaving the site there indefinitely.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Verify required extensions such as the database driver, image processing library and multibyte support remain enabled after the change.
- Check that scheduled tasks still run; a PHP change can expose a command-line PHP binary that differs from the web PHP version.
- Confirm file permissions and object-cache services after a host-level PHP restart.
- Watch logs for deprecation notices that do not break pages immediately but can indicate future incompatibility.
Common failure symptoms and fixes
“Your server is running PHP 7.3 or lower”
This is below the WordPress 7.0 minimum. Change the host’s PHP version to at least 7.4 before upgrading WordPress. Because PHP 7.4 is end-of-life, use that setting only to regain compatibility long enough to test a move to PHP 8.4 or later.
A blank page or HTTP 500 error after switching
Restore the previous branch if necessary, then inspect the PHP fatal-error log. The message normally identifies a plugin, theme or custom file using removed syntax, an incompatible function signature or a missing extension. Update or replace that component on staging, retest, and repeat the PHP switch.
Best Value
The site loads, but one feature fails
Test the feature’s complete workflow rather than only the homepage. Payment callbacks, image resizing, imports, scheduled jobs and third-party API clients often run code that ordinary browsing does not exercise. Compare logs from the failed request with the extension’s compatibility requirements.
PHP 8.4 or 8.5 is missing from the host panel
The host may have a fixed platform, a per-account limit or a different control panel for managed WordPress plans. Ask which PHP branches are available, whether the version can be changed per site, and how rollback works. If the host cannot provide a maintained branch, migration may be safer than keeping an end-of-life PHP version.

Will a newer PHP version make WordPress faster?
Newer PHP releases can improve execution, memory behavior and language features, but there is no single official numeric speed increase that applies to every WordPress site. Results depend on plugins, theme code, caching, database queries, traffic and hosting hardware. Upgrade for security support and compatibility first; measure performance on your own staging and production telemetry instead of promising a fixed percentage improvement.
A practical 2026 decision framework
| Your situation | Recommended action | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Launching a new site | PHP 8.4; consider 8.5 after full testing | Both are actively supported, and 8.4 is the production recommendation. |
| Running WordPress 7.1 on PHP 8.3 | Plan a tested move to 8.4 or 8.5 | 8.3 remains compatible and recommended by WordPress.org, but is security-only after 31 December 2025. |
| Running PHP 8.2 | Schedule migration before 31 December 2026 | The branch reaches end of life on that date. |
| Running PHP 7.4 | Use only as a transition, then upgrade | It meets the WordPress floor but is upstream end-of-life. |
| Blocked by a plugin or theme | Test, update, replace or isolate the component | Core compatibility does not guarantee third-party compatibility. |
Bottom line for WordPress in 2026
PHP 7.4 is the minimum WordPress 7.0 and 7.1 support, but it should not be your destination. PHP 8.3 is WordPress.org’s public recommendation; PHP 8.4 or later is the stronger production choice, and PHP 8.5 is fully supported by WordPress 6.9 and later. Select the newest maintained branch your host and tested plugins can handle, keep a verified rollback path, and treat old PHP versions as temporary migration states rather than permanent configurations.
