Which phones and carriers support satellite-to-cell service in 2026?

Short answer: there is no single satellite-to-cell compatibility list. Apple’s satellite features work on every iPhone 14 or later where Apple enables them. In the United States, T-Mobile maintains a changing list of phones for T-Satellite, while Verizon’s Skylo service currently supports selected Galaxy S25, Galaxy Z Fold7, Galaxy Z Flip7, Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 models. O2 Satellite in the UK and One NZ Satellite in New Zealand publish their own handset and plan requirements.

Check the exact model variant, country, carrier account, software version and included features before buying a phone or travelling. A handset that connects through one provider is not automatically compatible with another provider’s satellite service.

What “satellite-to-cell” means

The term covers several different technologies that are easy to confuse. Some features are built into the phone’s operating system and connect directly to satellites for specific tasks. Others are carrier services that let a compatible ordinary smartphone reach the carrier network when terrestrial cell towers are unavailable.

Phone-based satellite features

Apple’s iPhone satellite functions can send emergency messages, request roadside assistance, exchange messages with friends and family and share a location. They are separate from a carrier’s satellite add-on and depend on regional availability and compatible software.

Carrier direct-to-cell services

T-Mobile T-Satellite, Verizon’s Skylo service, O2 Satellite and One NZ Satellite use a supported phone, an eligible account and a satellite connection outside normal cellular coverage. Their capabilities differ: one may support ordinary texts and selected app data, while another may offer only basic two-way text and SOS. Voice calling, MMS, RCS, attachments and emergency calling are not guaranteed.

Compatibility at a glance

Apple satellite features Countries and regions where Apple enables the feature iPhone 14 or later, all models Emergency SOS, roadside assistance, Messages, Find My location sharing Feature availability and software requirements vary by region
T-Mobile T-Satellite Outdoor areas across the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Japan where coverage is available Use T-Mobile’s live compatibility list; devices are added over time Texts, picture messages, location sharing, selected satellite-ready apps and WhatsApp voice chat Included with certain Experience plans; otherwise a monthly add-on
Verizon Skylo Verizon satellite service in supported areas Galaxy S25, S25 Edge, S25+, S25 Ultra; Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7; Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold; Pixel 10, 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL Two-way basic text messaging and Satellite SOS No extra fee for Satellite SOS and messaging with Skylo, according to Verizon

One NZ Satellite New Zealand, outside traditional One NZ cell-tower coverage Eligible phones on One NZ’s current list; overseas-purchased phones are not guaranteed Text and MMS plus selected apps, with app-specific limits Eligible One NZ phone and plan required

Apple: every iPhone 14 or later, subject to regional availability

Apple states that all iPhone 14 and later models can connect to a satellite when mobile-network and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable, provided the feature is available in the user’s country or region and the phone has compatible software. The supported uses are distinct from a carrier satellite plan:

  • Texting emergency services with Emergency SOS.
  • Requesting roadside assistance where that option is offered.
  • Messaging friends and family.
  • Sharing a location through Find My.

A clear view of the sky and horizon is important. Apple says a message can take 30 seconds or longer to send even in ideal conditions; trees, buildings, mountains and other obstructions can block the link or make it take longer. Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, Find My and Messages also have different privacy and availability rules, so seeing a satellite icon does not mean every function is available.

Verizon iPhone customers should treat this as Apple’s feature set, not the Android Skylo offering. Verizon directs iPhone 14-or-later users to Apple’s satellite capabilities with iOS 18 or later, subject to Apple’s regional conditions.

United States carrier services

T-Mobile T-Satellite

T-Satellite is designed for outdoor areas across the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Japan where a customer can see the sky and ordinary cellular service is unavailable. T-Mobile continues to add compatible devices, so the current eligibility page is more reliable than a static list printed in an article.

The service can carry text and picture messages, location sharing, selected satellite-ready apps and WhatsApp voice chat. Satellite bandwidth is limited: messages or app actions can be delayed, coverage can have gaps and some app features work differently from their terrestrial versions.

Eligibility is tied to both the handset and the account. T-Mobile says T-Satellite is included with certain Experience plans and is also available as a monthly add-on for other customers. Confirm the current plan name, charge and device entry before switching plans or travelling. A recent phone is not automatically eligible.

Verizon Skylo on Android

Verizon’s Skylo-backed service currently lists these Android models:

  • Samsung Galaxy S25, S25 Edge, S25+, S25 Ultra.
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7.
  • Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
  • Google Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL.

The exact regional variant matters. Verizon requires Google Messages to be the default messaging application and a line of sight to the satellite. The service supports two-way basic text messaging and Satellite SOS. Verizon says MMS, RCS and attachments are not supported, so a message that includes a photo, group-chat feature or rich-media element may fail or need to be rewritten as plain text.

Verizon says there is no extra fee for Satellite SOS and messaging with Skylo. That does not remove normal line, plan or regional eligibility requirements. Check Verizon’s current model list before purchase because support can change as software and network coverage expand.

United Kingdom: O2 Satellite

O2 Satellite uses a compatible phone in areas where the O2 terrestrial network is unavailable. O2 says compatible handsets connect automatically in uncovered areas and can support messaging, location sharing and listed apps.

Phones on O2’s current list

The maintained O2 list spans Samsung Galaxy S23, S24, S25 and S26 families, selected A-series and Z-series models, iPhone 13 through iPhone 18 families (including the specific 16, 17 and 18 variants listed by O2, plus iPhone Air and iPhone Duo), and Google Pixel 9 through Pixel 11 models. “Galaxy S25” or “iPhone 17” alone is not enough to prove compatibility: storage, regional and carrier variants can differ. Use O2’s model-level checker.

Plan and emergency limits

For an eligible Pay Monthly customer, O2 lists Satellite as a £3-per-month bolt-on. It is included with an Ultimate plan. O2 Satellite does not support standard voice calls, including emergency calls, and O2 warns customers not to rely on it to contact emergency services.

Virgin Media O2 announced that O2 Satellite went live on 26 February 2026 using Starlink Direct to Cell. The launch described messages and data in apps such as WhatsApp, Messenger and Google Maps, initially with the latest Samsung devices. The current compatible-device page, rather than the launch announcement, should be used for a phone or plan decision.

New Zealand: One NZ Satellite

One NZ’s Starlink-powered service requires an eligible phone and an eligible One NZ plan. It is intended for places outside traditional One NZ cell-tower coverage and is currently available only in New Zealand. One NZ cautions that a phone bought overseas is not guaranteed to work even if its model name appears on an eligible list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The service supports text and MMS and selected apps, but individual app functions can be limited or behave differently from normal mobile data. You must be outside traditional coverage and have a usable view of the sky.

An ordinary 111 emergency call cannot be made where no traditional cellular network is available. One NZ describes an exception for registered 111 TXT users with hearing or speech difficulties. The satellite service is an additional communication layer, not a replacement for a personal locator beacon (PLB) or an emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB). For backcountry or rural trips, One NZ recommends carrying a PLB.

Announced services and trials are not current consumer support

VodafoneThree and AST SpaceMobile

VodafoneThree announced customer trials of its AST SpaceMobile/Satellite Connect Europe service for summer 2026, with a target capability including data, voice and SMS. The announcement does not establish a final launch date, commercial plan or compatible-phone list. Treat it as a trial announcement until a current customer eligibility page confirms availability.

Proposed US direct-to-device joint venture

AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon announced an agreement in principle on 14 May 2026 to form a direct-to-device joint venture. The announcement said definitive agreements still needed to be negotiated and customary closing conditions remained. It is not proof that a new joint service is already available to subscribers.

Network context from Starlink Direct to Cell

SpaceX has described Direct to Cell messaging for T-Mobile customers in the United States and One NZ customers in New Zealand, connecting directly to 4G LTE phones. That description explains the network technology; the carrier’s current eligibility page still controls which phone models, plans and functions work today.

How to check whether your phone will work

  1. Identify the exact model. On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About and record the model name and software version. On Android, open Settings > About phone; menu names vary by manufacturer. Record the full model and regional variant, not just the family name.
  2. Choose the specific service. Decide whether you need Apple’s satellite features, T-Satellite, Verizon Skylo, O2 Satellite or One NZ Satellite. Compatibility does not transfer between services.
  3. Check the provider’s live handset list. Match the complete model designation and country. Do not infer support from a similar model, an unlocked listing or another carrier’s page.
  4. Verify the account and plan. Confirm that your line is on an included plan or that the required bolt-on is active. For O2, that means an eligible Pay Monthly account or Ultimate plan; for T-Mobile, check whether your Experience plan includes T-Satellite or requires an add-on.
  5. Install required software and apps. Apply the provider’s current operating-system update. Verizon Skylo requires Google Messages as the default messaging app. Apple’s Verizon guidance requires iOS 18 or later for the iPhone satellite features described there.
  6. Test in an open place. Move outdoors with a broad view of the sky and horizon. Follow the on-screen pointing instructions, keep the phone still when prompted and allow for delays.
  7. Prepare a backup. Save offline maps, tell someone your route and carry a PLB for remote travel. Satellite messaging should not be your only emergency plan.

What can prevent a connection

  • Wrong service or model variant: A phone can be listed for one carrier and rejected by another.
  • Obstructed sky: Buildings, dense tree cover, cliffs and steep terrain can block the satellite path.
  • Terrestrial coverage still present: Some carrier services activate only when the normal network is unavailable.
  • Unsupported message type: Verizon Skylo does not carry MMS, RCS or attachments; rewrite the message as basic text.
  • Plan not eligible: A compatible handset cannot substitute for the required carrier plan or add-on.
  • Software or default-app mismatch: Install updates and check the required messaging app.
  • Network delay or gap: Low bandwidth and changing satellite visibility can make a message wait or fail; move to a clearer location and retry.
  • Emergency-call assumption: O2 Satellite does not provide standard emergency voice calls, and One NZ says ordinary 111 calls are unavailable without traditional cellular coverage.

Practical buying and travel guidance

Choose the service first, then choose a phone that appears on that service’s current list. If you need Apple Emergency SOS, roadside assistance or location sharing, an iPhone 14 or later is the relevant baseline where Apple enables the feature. If you need a US carrier’s ordinary satellite messaging, compare the carrier plan and its exact handset list instead of assuming every recent flagship works.

For UK customers, include the £3 O2 bolt-on in the decision unless the account already has an Ultimate plan, and plan another way to contact emergency services. For New Zealand trips, verify both the One NZ plan and the phone’s purchase region, then carry a PLB for remote terrain. In every country, satellite-to-cell is a supplemental connection with limited bandwidth and line-of-sight requirements, not a universal replacement for cellular service or dedicated emergency equipment.
